Enzyme Wizard wins iconic Singapore hotel Marina Bay Sands, one of Singapore’s most iconic hotels, has implemented the Enzyme Wizard product range in its day to day cleaning procedures. It follows trials of Enzyme Wizard’s ‘No Rinse Floor Cleaner’ in April 2019 at Marina Bay Sands (MBS). Enzyme Wizard director Jamie Flinkier said he was first introduced to MBS through Eco Tag Industrial – a robotic equipment supplier based in Singapore. Eco Tag Industrial is affiliated with iconic facilities, such as Changi Airport and Marina Bay Sands, and has a strong presence in the hospitality, retail and healthcare sectors throughout Asia. Marina Bay Sands is one of Singapore’s leading hotels when it comes to sustainability and environmental procedures, not only in the hotel but as well as once the product has left the building and enters waterways. The plant derived multi enzyme formula in Enzyme Wizard’s range means products are soap-free, Ph neutral, non-caustic or corrosive and biodegradable. “The future looks bright in Singapore as many other hotels have already made moves to introduce our natural cleaning range,” said Flinkier.

Tork uncovers the impact of composting hand towels Through lifecycle analysis, Tork has found composting hand towel with commercial composters instead of disposing them in landfill reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent. This lifecycle analysis was completed as part of new Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) on a number of Tork products. Each EPD outlines Global Warming Potential – also known as carbon footprint, GWP is the potential of greenhouse gases – such as carbon dioxide and methane – to increase absorption of heat reaching Earth’s atmosphere, intensifying the natural greenhouse effect. In 2016, Tork was the first tissue company to produce EPDs. A published EPD is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the environmental impact of a product through its entire life cycle. Tork is adding more products to the EPDs and will also include some

interesting statistics about composting hand towels. Each EPD covers the full life cycle of the product from cradle-to-grave. The most popular Tork Conventional, Jumbo and Mini Jumbo toilet paper products, Multifold and Ultraslim hand towels, Roll and Kitchen towel products, as well as Xpressnap dispenser napkins have been analysed.
“We were attracted to EPDs for Tork because of their transparency, credibility and ability to speak to the product’s entire life cycle. We have both quantified our environmental impacts and disclosed this information publicly for a range of products,” said Rochelle Lake, head of marketing, B2B. “EPDs also allow us to identify ‘hot spots’ within our value chain - areas where improvements can be made to reduce impact, such as through composting of hand towel.” The EPDs also show Tork toilet paper and hand towel that is manufactured at Kawerau has been produced with 65 to 76 per cent renewable energy. An achievement that is a result of the direct use of geothermal steam in the paper making process and of New Zealand’s high proportion of renewable energy within the grid. The recent $23 million upgrade of the Kawerau facility is undergoing further assessment and additional EPDs will be available in 2020.

Pacific Hygiene leads the way in delivery The only constant in business is change and a changing commercial environment often puts pressure on smaller independently owned businesses. Pacific Hygiene recognised this and after two years of beta testing with a small group of clients, has launched Logistics as a Service, or LaaS, for its customer base. Gav Kennedy, GM Operations and Finance, says New Zealand is a small economy but, in some cases, consumable goods were being handled up to four times before getting into the hands of the end-user due to geographical constraints or reseller relationships. “That’s three times too many in most cases not only adding significant logistical costs but also being environmentally detrimental, freighting bulky goods around,” Kennedy said. “On top of all that, there is the looming threat of the tech giants’ online platforms which makes extra logistics commercially unsustainable. Advancements in our technology platforms allow us to integrate with most systems and take out costs while keeping customers informed on what stage their order is at and most importantly when it’s delivered.” According to Pacific Hygiene, the service offers businesses the opportunity to grow outside their normal territories without the usual operational constraints associated to doing business such as freight, handling and storage. Smaller businesses can focus on their sales, service levels and package of goods on offer, while we look after the rest. “Customers using the service have noticed an increase in sales and volume without adding overhead in space and handling and can sleep at night knowing they have fixed cost on these sales. It really is a true partnership in business to create positive outcomes for the end users of the products. If you are a Pacific Hygiene Partner get in touch for a preview of the service.”

Bay Direct Distributors joins RapidClean NZ RapidClean NZ has welcomed its newest member, Bay Direct Distributors. Under the ownership of Dale and Sarah McGregor for the past 12 months, Bay Direct Distributors has been in operation for more than 26 years, supplying cleaning and hygiene products across the Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions. Craig Newton, national manager of RapidClean NZ, said Bay Direct Distributors is a well-established business in the Bay area and a “great addition to the RapidClean NZ family”. McGregor said joining the Rapid Group will provide significant benefit to Bay Direct Distributors as well as greater networking opportunities. “I could see that joining the Rapid Group and being part of a larger network of professionals, was going to be of significant benefit to the business,” McGregor told INCLEAN NZ. “The immediate focus for us this year is to continue to provide our customers with our quality service that they have come to expect from Bay Direct Distributors for the past 26 years and continue to grow the customer base. “We need to make sure we don’t rest on our laurels, and that we embrace any new opportunities. The Tauranga region is growing so much at the moment… and we have the opportunity to tap into that growth, which is exciting.” The focus for Bay Direct Distributors is also on extending its range of sustainable products and increasing its online presence. “There’s a general trend away from the use of single-use plastics and more towards more sustainable products. We’re already making moves away from single-use plastics and selling quite a lot of plant-based products, such as our compostable cup.”

LEADERS FORUM
3M Ranmalee de Silva, Application Engineering Specialist 3M Commercial Solutions Division, Cleaning & Workplace Safety DID YOU NOTICE ANY CHANGES IN CUSTOMER BEHAVIOUR IN 2019?
“
The industry needs to re-evaluate what their expectations are versus their budgets. We’ve reached a critical point that we now need to ask, do our budgets reflect our expectations and our customers’ expectations?
”
We have noticed that our customers were more price-conscious in 2019 and looking for ways to become leaner when it comes to cleaning costs. Customers are looking for either products or processes that assist them cut the costs of their cleaning operations. While customers are focused on price reduction, they still demand the same quality. Over the last few years, 3M has responded to this emerging market trend and developed quality products that reduce the use of chemicals, labour, and equipment to address these needs.
HAVE YOU NOTICED ANY TRENDS IN 2019? DO YOU EXPECT THOSE TRENDS TO CONTINUE INTO 2020? Robotics is a newer trend that is still in the early phases, but we may see this picking up more in 2020. First-generation robotic machines made their initial appearance approximately three years ago, but they are becoming more sophisticated. They have been trialled at several sites, and we think there will be a greater uptake of automation in the industry as building and facility managers look to reduce labour costs. Customers appear to be more focused on regulatory requirements, with multiple requests coming through in 2019 for certifications for products both in the food industry and the cleaning industry. Worker health and safety will continue to be an important driver in 2020.
WHAT ROLE WILL INNOVATION PLAY FOR 3M IN 2020? Innovation is in our DNA. Our vision as a company is that our technology advances every company, our product enhances every home, 10 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
and our innovations improve every life. When it comes to launching new products to the market, we always seek our customers insights to help us best innovate to suit their needs. The industry is trying to do a lot with little money. Our cleaning budgets are extremely tight, yet our cleaning and presentation expectations of a facility are extremely high. In order to fit into that, we are looking at products that will assist our customers improve the presentation of their facilities. There are a number of products that we will be releasing in 2020 that will be targeted at the commercial cleaning industry and the food service industry. Our products go through a lengthy voice of customer process to ensure they are the right fit for the marketplace so some of our key customers are scheduled to trial those products next year.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? In 2019, there were changes with a lot of large cleaning contracts in New Zealand, so there will be new contractors looking after new sites which will come with their own challenges. Manufacturers and suppliers of cleaning products and equipment may need to spend more time in 2020 training and educating new site contractors on technology and innovations that they haven’t encountered previously.
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? The industry needs to re-evaluate what their expectations are versus their budgets. We’ve reached a critical point that we now need to ask, do our budgets reflect our expectations and our customers’ expectations? ■
LEADERS FORUM
Building Service Contractors of New Zealand (BSCNZ) Sarah McBride, CEO HOW WAS 2019 FOR BSCNZ? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? Thank Your Cleaner Day is continuing to gain momentum, every year we see more engagement by business and the community. The idea of the day embodies the essence of the kiwi culture, to acknowledge hard work. As the industry body BSCNZ will continue to work with members to find creative ideas to invigorate the day and to establish meaningful ways to thank team members. In 2019 the industry came together for the BSCNZ Driving Success conference. Feedback from the conference was positive and reiterated the importance of holding these events for the industry. BSCNZ also launched a partnership with the Ministry of Social Development. BSCNZ is now the official work broker for the commercial cleaning sector in New Zealand. The program seeks to place beneficiaries into full time commercial cleaning roles. In a few short months since its inception the program has been rolled out nation-wide seeing engagement in Auckland, Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and Christchurch. The program offers BSCNZ members potential employees that have been through a screening process to assist with their ongoing staffing requirements.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR BSCNZ IN 2020? The immediate focus in 2020 will be growing the momentum of the BSCNZ Work Broker Program. BSCNZ will endeavour through the program to find the right fit for employer and employee. The labour shortage issue within the commercial cleaning sector continues to take up precious internal resources, therefore the program goal is to assist in the recruitment process, alleviating the workload. In addition to this BSCNZ can provide financial assistance to help mitigate the expense of integrating a new employee into the workforce with the monetary and pastoral support provided through the program.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? A potential change of government may bring a new political agenda which will have ongoing,
widespread impacts for business. The air of uncertainty lingers with all the challenges that this brings. The Labour Government has had a focus on empowering the ethos of union and has undertaken a concerted effort to increase the protection of employees. At the BSCNZ conference Minister Iain LeesGalloway acknowledged the work of the BSCNZ and the essential role the association plays in ensuring the industry’s voice is heard. A lack of knowledge of an industry combined with legislative change can have the unintended consequence of disempowering business. Regardless of the potential political change, BSCNZ will continue to represent the industry, educating policy advisors and continuing the important discussions.
WHAT IS ONE ISSUE THE INDUSTRY SHOULD URGENTLY ADDRESS IN 2020? The go-to answer for this question is climate change and sustainability. While no one would disagree, this issue is extremely important, if we are to focus on the commercial cleaning sector it would be to ask ourselves, how can we retain margins in our industry? Without sustainable margins the future of the industry looks bleak. Margins allow for the investment into the future wellbeing of business. To this point, there is a growing support for the Living Wage, when you take into consideration that 80 per cent of a commercial cleaning contract is made up of labour this maybe a means to challenge customers on price and investing in our greatest asset.
“
We all need our businesses to succeed so that in turn our people succeed, creating a better future for team members.
”
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? The message that was the forefront of our conference in September: He aha te mea nui o te ao What is the most important thing in the world? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata It is people, it is people, it is people We all need our businesses to succeed so that in turn our people succeed, creating a better future for team members. Given we are a labour-based industry I believe this message is one worth sharing for 2020 and for many years to come. ■ www.incleanmag.co.nz 11

Careerforce Jane Wenman, CEO HOW WAS 2019 FOR CAREERFORCE? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WHERE THE CHALLENGES? Highlights Enrolments into cleaning qualifications grew from strength to strength. At the time of writing, new enrolments into cleaning qualifications grew 88 per cent from 2018 to 2019. This growth recognises a greater appreciation of the value that an appropriately trained workforce can have, not only in terms of ultimate client satisfaction, but also on workforce retention. In 2019 we commenced a review of the New Zealand Certificate in Cleaning L2 with optional endorsement in Health Care Facilities Cleaning and the New Zealand Certificate in Cleaning L3 with optional strands in Specialist Cleaning and Supervision. Findings and recommendations have been presented to NZQA. We’d like to thank everyone who has participated in the review and have published the analysis of all the feedback we received and our recommended changes to the qualifications, on the Careerforce website. Once we hear back from NZQA, we’ll write to those who participated in the review*. In 2020 we’ll be reviewing the Careerforce cleaning programmes (that lead to the qualifications). Last year we also celebrated our 25th anniversary. Careerforce started as an organisation of nine staff in Christchurch, and has now grown to an organisation of 160, working with more than 1000 employers nationwide, and presently supporting over 15,000 trainees and apprentices. Careerforce was also a very enthusiastic supporter of Thank Your Cleaner Day. We welcome this initiative to celebrate this important workforce and to recognise the valuable and often unappreciated work they do. 14 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
Challenges In February 2019, Minister Chris Hipkins announced proposed sweeping reforms to the entire vocational education system, aimed at creating a stronger, more unified, and sustainable vocational education system. In August, and following a period of public consultation, these reforms were largely confirmed to proceed. In the short to medium term, this means very little for Careerforce employers and trainees. The Minister has absolutely affirmed his commitment to workplace-based training, highlighting a ‘gravitational pull’ in this direction. He furthermore committed to long transition timeframes. He also emphasised his expectation for workplace-based training to grow during the transition, and actively encouraged employers to continue to engage in training, in the comfort that transitions will be very carefully managed.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR CAREERFORCE IN 2020? 2020 will be very much business as usual for Careerforce as we continue our drive to encourage employers to train their staff. We don’t expect RoVE to have any effect, if any, over 2020. We will also commence a review of our training programmes in 2020, that will reflect any changes resulting from the qualifications review and will again actively seek sector feedback.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR CAREERFORCE LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? The response to our Spring Clean campaign highlighted the latent demand that is out there for more people working across the cleaning sector to upskill and gain formal qualifications. We see a real opportunity to further increase training across
LEADERS FORUM
the sector and continue to encourage employers to recognise the benefits of a trained workforce. The impact of the rollout of the reforms will continue to become clearer over 2020. Our focus will be on continuing to influence the outcomes via working constructively with education officials and ensuring that the best interests of our sectors are represented.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020?
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WILL BE THE BIG TRENDS OF 2020?
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY?
We have noticed an increasing trend that more and more employers and contracts they are tendering for, are stating that cleaning staff must hold a cleaning qualification. This is a great move towards recognising cleaning as valuable occupation with a meaningful career path. We expect this trend to continue.
WHAT KEY ISSUES THE INDUSTRY SHOULD BE DISCUSSING IN 2020? The industry should be discussing what the emerging trends are, and how do these need to be reflected in training programmes.
As has happened across other sectors that Careerforce works across, we expect there will be an emerging trend for qualification requirements to be written into tender and contract requirements, particularly for cleaning organisations seeking public sector contracts.
The importance of a well-trained and qualified workforce should be an investment, rather than a cost. Training and qualifications not only results in higher quality outcomes for clients and therefore client retention, but also in greater staff retention. Cleaning staff feel more valued, and the opportunities for training lead to better career prospects and life outcomes.

TSM ITALA 135 is defined as a “mechanical” sweeper because it collects waste by the central brush in a 135 LT bin and at the same time is a “suction” sweeper also thanks to its powerful filtering system able to guarantee total filtration PM10 fine dust, even in the absence of water, freeing clean air in the environment during all the time of use. The electric sidewalk sweeper TSM ITALA 135 is also incredibly versatile because it can be used both as a walk behind model, as with the operator on board, with the addition of the charriot, offering the possibility to drive for long distances. It is also equipped with a wander suction hose for vacuuming bulky waste, reaching narrow spaces, such as flower beds, side benches, etc.

WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR YOUR BUSINESS IN 2020? Our immediate focus is to open more branches and add more categories of products to our existing offering.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR YOUR BUSINESS LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? Our biggest challenge is to be more sustainable across our entire offering, however, that same challenge also provides a lot of opportunity in this competitive market. As a market leader we love challenges and we would like to convert those challenges to opportunities.
HOW WAS 2019 FOR NZ CLEANING SUPPLIES? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES?
the name you can trust
18 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
The business performed well in 2019 as expected. We had overall growth of 15 per cent, which we believe is exceptional in the current market. The highlight of the year included our new office at 12 Nugent Street, Auckland with a fully equipped training area. Another highlight was the introduction of cutting-edge innovations and technologies to the market such as the first Roto orbital machine and the first combination sweeper/urban vacuum, both a first in Australasia. We were also proud partners of BSCNZ’s Thank Your Cleaner Day. The heavy imports of cheap consumables and machines from Asia was our biggest challenge. The market is price centric, however, our focus is on quality, innovation and sustainable products, which save time and money in the long run for our customers.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR THE INDUSTRY LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? The biggest challenge for the industry will be government policies, such as the increase in the wages which will be directly proportional to the cost of goods; and fixed term contracts where the supplier/manufacturers cannot put their prices up for the fixed term.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? Energy efficient and sustainable products will take the industry to the next level. We are currently working on a lot of products in this category.
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? Keep supporting NZ owned and operated business that offer sustainable and innovative products for our industry. This also comes with a social commitment to reinvest back to the community. ■

Cleaning Systems Rosemary Pritchard, Managing Director
HOW WAS 2019 FOR CLEANING SYSTEMS? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? The major highlight for Cleaning Systems in 2019 was the relocation of the business from Penrose to East Tamaki. Our new premises have given us increased warehousing and office space, a larger service workshop along with a number of training rooms including a demonstration room for practical training. We now have ample onsite parking for hosting bigger events. Another highlight was commissioning a service vehicle which is based full time in the South Island. Customers have embraced this service and can now schedule a regular maintenance service on their truck mounts when the service vehicle is in their area.
WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? The biggest challenge we faced, which also impacted our customers, was the tightening in the economy. A number of our customers reported a period of downturn in business. In addition, for ourselves the uncertainty due to the dispute with the US and China trade deals, increased production costs and a metal surcharge tax imposed by the US along with the 20 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
lower exchange rate have all impacted negatively on the cost of our imported goods. Adding to that, the brown marmorated stink bug issue added further costs and time delays in receiving shipments due to fumigation requirements.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR CLEANING SYSTEMS IN 2020? Our immediate focus is on our training division. We are broadening our training suite to better educate and support the industry. A recent survey has given us a clear direction for the need for more practical hands on training. We are excited to be delivering the very first of these new courses in February. During this practical half-day course, you will ‘live a day in the life’ of a carpet cleaning technician. I’m a firm believer that you are never too old to stop learning and that there is always room for improvement.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR CLEANING SYSTEMS LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? Our biggest challenge this year is also our biggest opportunity. We want to be more engaged with our customers. This means we need to be proactive

rather than reactive to customer needs. One of our strengths is assisting customers to solve problems they are facing in the field. We endeavour to help our customers be the best service providers whether they are a carpet cleaning technician, a pest control technician or a restoration technician. As a company we need to bridge the gap between manufacturers and end users. We embrace this opportunity as a challenge.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING AND RESTORATION LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? 2019 saw the release of two legal documents which will impact our industry. The 10th edition of the Standard Sale and Purchase Agreement and the Healthy Homes Standards released by Tenancy Services. The Healthy Homes Standards will play a significant role in improving the wellbeing of New Zealanders and their families. There are obligations on property managers, landlords and real estate agents within these documents around moisture, indoor air quality and toxicology matters which will have a significant impact on the landscaping of the cleaning and restoration industry.
restoration industry part of our responsibility is improving both living conditions and working environments. More and more challenges will be placed on our industry so we need future leaders who can take on this responsibility.
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? To be a success in your own right, you need to be responsible for keeping yourself fully informed of changes that are happening in your scope of work. As a PCBU you are responsible for everything related to your business and the best way to keep on top of these changes is to attend seminars that are available in your specialist field. WHAT IS ONE ISSUE YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY SHOULD BE URGENTLY DISCUSSING IN 2020? Sustainability and legislation will always be on top of the list. CrestClean Grant McLauchlan, Managing Director
HOW WAS 2019 FOR CRESTCLEAN? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? CrestClean had another strong year of growth across all 17 regions. Highlights included several larger customers, who we lost in a tender process on price, returning to us within a few months after realising our pricing is based on providing a sustainable quality service. We continued to experience the challenge of industry competitors pricing contracts at rates that cannot sustain a quality level of service to customers, to their detriment.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR CRESTCLEAN IN 2020? Like every year that we have been in business, we will continue to focus our energies on the safety, well-being and up-skilling of our people, irrespective whether they are our operational cleaning teams, support personnel or office 22 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
staff. We host more than 1400 unique training contacts each year, so training is a very big part of our business.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR THE BUSINESS LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? The new Government Procurement Strategy, which recognises CrestClean’s commitment to environmental compliances and training, is already opening opportunities that we see continuing in 2020 and beyond. We see the recruitment of good personnel to support our growth in 2020 as being a continued challenge.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY TRENDS IN 2019? DO YOU EXPECT THOSE TRENDS TO CONTINUE INTO 2020? Equipment innovation with battery technology improved dramatically in 2019 and we see the advance of these innovations gaining pace in 2020.
LEADERS FORUM ARE THERE ANY INTERNATIONAL TRENDS YOU THINK WILL MAKE THEIR WAY TO NZ IN 2020? Public expectations about standards of hygiene and cleanliness are increasing, particularly in the busy developed cities. It will only take a public health issue like the coronavirus outbreak to reinforce this growing awareness of the importance of maintaining high standards of cleanliness at workplaces and public facilities.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR THE INDUSTRY LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? With 2.5 per cent GDP growth forecast this year, we see opportunity in the market place as our existing and prospective customers grow in line with the economy.
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? For the industry to recognise and celebrate the importance of the services we undertake for customers and to price contracts accordingly. ■

Filta Cleaning Products Lee James, General Manager HOW WAS 2019 FOR FILTA? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? 2019 was a successful year for team Filta but more importantly a successful year for our business partners. We strive at Filta to meet market demands and changes and welcome these changes with our key stakeholders. At Filta the philosophy is simple; listen to the market, work with our partners and our success will drive off these key partnerships. Highlights for Filta were the Pacvac Battery Backpack introduction, Unger Pure Water and Unger Stingray trainings, which all lead to market productivity gains. Among the challenges for the year were rising costs, driven by the US dollar as well as the increased shipping costs both internationally as well as domestic.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR FILTA IN 2020? 2020 represents some further change for Filta with several further announcements to be made around our distribution focus, with some new partners looking to join the Filta family. It’s going 24 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
to be another exciting year for team Filta and we can’t wait to make these announcements.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR FILTA LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? With change comes opportunity. The Filta team recognises the market drive for change has rapidly escalated in the past 24 months. It’s these drivers for change that will mean as a supplier we have to look globally at strategic partnerships that will adapt to these changes and meet our customers’ expectations. 2020 sees the industry facing many challenges from workload, staff training and education through to securing a key workforce. It’s with these key points in mind that we strive to collaborate and become more solution focused, both as a supplier to the industry but also as a key supporter of training and innovation.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WILL BE THE BIG TRENDS OF 2020? Productivity is a key word for 2020, all stakeholders want to achieve the best result for

their client with the right tools in the best time frame for all parties. As an industry we need to drive change at all levels. This means meeting the needs of the clients with products and or technology, especially ones they aren’t aware of and the impact this could have on their day to day function as a business.
WHAT KEY ISSUES DO YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY SHOULD BE DISCUSSING IN 2020? Sustainability and technology are the obvious discussions topics for all partners, other key topics are those where we challenge the normal practice or thinking. It’s an exciting time to be part of the cleaning industry and all parties are being driven to be innovative, ethical around supply chain and process driven about product end of life.
WHAT IS ONE ISSUE YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY SHOULD URGENTLY ADDRESS IN 2020? Education. As an industry we need to educate across all levels - end user, supplier, account manager and procurement lead. At Filta, we
believe all these parties have an impact on how the product will be used as the greater the understanding of the product the greater the impact it will have on the industry. There are several layers to this with online training, training days, e-books and videos all playing a part in the upskill of the industry. Yes we need to use technology for this but we also need to gets hands on with the key users and ensure some practical experience is undertaken as well.
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? Cleaning is an industry where we can all make a difference, whether it’s through our attitude towards cleaners and the amazing job these unsung heroes do, or the job suppliers do in helping the cleaner's day become a little easier through technology or design innovation. Filta is grateful to our business partners and the open, honest relationships we have formed. It’s truly our partners that drive us to be better as a team and as NZ supplier to the industry. ■

LEADERS FORUM
ISS Facility Services Paul Archer, COO HOW WAS 2019 FOR ISS? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES?
“
We are endeavouring to expand our service offering and some exciting opportunities lie ahead for us to do so.
”
ISS ended 2019 with significant organic growth, due primarily to some great contract wins, notably Capital & Coast District Health Board in Wellington, where ISS now provides cleaning, internal waste management, pest control services and washroom supplies. This is the largest single contract win in our 15-year history in New Zealand. In addition, we retained 100 per cent of our key accounts and completed a staged restructure of our business, exiting either geographically challenging or poor performing contracts. The low point of 2019 for us was saying farewell to some significant long-term customers that do not align with our sector strategy. We will miss them!
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR ISS IN 2020? As part of our restructure program, our local strategy is aligned with ISS Group: namely in becoming a key account business. We have clearly identified our key market sectors for the future along with our blueprint service delivery model. In 2020, we will focus on consolidation and pursuing new opportunities to deliver a range of facility management services within these sectors. Globally, ISS has committed to divesting its interests in 13 countries to create a more focused organisation and to reinvest in faster roll out of our technology platforms to improve both our business reporting and service delivery.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS MAJOR OPPORTUNITIES FOR ISS OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS? ISS is recognised as the provider of choice in the sectors where we work, and we will continue to engage within these industries an effort to further grow our footprint. 26 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
Customers are looking for compliance, consistency, transparency and efficiency. Our value proposition answers these needs to allow our customers to focus on their core purpose. We are also endeavouring to expand our service offering and some exciting opportunities lie ahead for us to do so. Watch this space…
WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU EXPECT TO FACE? Many of our NZ customers have faced significant cost increases over the last year and this will continue with burgeoning wage growth in 2020 and beyond. ISS’ ongoing goal is to bring innovation and productivity gains to our service delivery to reduce, or at least contain, these cost increases for our customers. This is not easy in a low margin industry, but we will continue to work hard on their behalf!
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WILL BE THE BIG TRENDS OF 2020? Technology, particularly building management systems, will continue to have a major impact on the broader facilities industry, as will the need for service providers to do more than provide token solutions in the environment and sustainability space. Green buildings are the way of the future and with a number of major corporates on the move next year; this will receive huge attention and focus. In addition, recruitment and retention of staff is key and will continue to be, a huge challenge for employers, so anything that FM providers can do to enhance the workplace experience will be in demand.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? It has been heartening to see a lift in overall cleaning standards and professionalism within the industry, particularly among the first and
LEADERS FORUM second tier service providers, and a growing appreciation for both quality outcomes and ethical employment practices across industry. Our hope is that this trend will continue through 2020.
WHAT IS ONE ISSUE THE INDUSTRY SHOULD URGENTLY ADDRESS IN 2020? As mentioned above, cleaning companies will continue to be under the media spotlight to ensure they are ethical employers, including remunerating their employees correctly and fairly. With the challenges we face recruiting and retaining quality staff, it is essential that we do not bite the hand that feeds us. Frontline staff are our business – let’s look after them!
IS THERE A MESSAGE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? Simply that ISS is here to stay. We are not exiting New Zealand! The business is solid and growing and we have made some very bold decisions around our strategy, sector preference and focus areas globally and locally. This region continues to be a huge contributor to ISS’ success as a world-leading facility services provider. ■

Kärcher New Zealand Mike Roberts, Managing Director
“
Cleaning on demand is an emerging technology trend that will make its way to New Zealand, maybe not in 2020, but not long after.
”
HOW WAS 2019 FOR KÄRCHER? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES?
ARE THERE ANY INTERNATIONAL TRENDS YOU THINK WILL MAKE THEIR WAY TO NZ IN 2020?
2019 was a very good year for Kärcher Professional, finishing well above expectations and performance was consistent across all product categories. Our wide professional product range continues to offer full solutions to our dealers and customer needs, backed up with solid national service support. Another key highlight was the continued success of the Thank Your Cleaner Day, now in its fifth year since launch. This event continues to gain momentum with both BSCs and their clients and is now global in more than 20 countries.
Cleaning on demand is an emerging technology trend that will make its way to New Zealand, maybe not in 2020, but not long after. Cleaning on demand is technology that will enable the BSC to gain more information from the building’s built in sensors and systems that will allow BSCs to make more informed decisions around how the building is cleaned and at what frequency, thereby help make better use of resourced employed.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR KÄRCHER IN 2020?
Robotics in cleaning have been at the forefront of many conversations around cleaning for some years now. Robotics will certainly be applicable in some environments, where wide open unrestricted areas exist, but for most parts, manual cleaning will still become the dominant form of cleaning. Robotics in NZ still appear to be in an infancy stage and have seen various players enter the robotic cleaning space. The jury is still out in terms of whether robotics are truly delivering the key returns on the investment outlay.
Kärcher NZ will continue to offer its BSC clients unprecedented frontline technical and solutionbased support nationally. It’s the key to enabling our business repeated organic growth and helps our industry partners attain leading technology. We’ll also continue support of industries trade events in 2020. Our business will remain a dealer-based business, we’ll continue to work with our preferential dealers and merchants enabling national supply continuity to end-users, along with promotional opportunities assisting to grow their own Kärcher business.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR KÄRCHER LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? Some of the key challenges we face are the acceptance rates of newer technologies by the customer that would ultimately lift their productivity and generate a greater return on their time employed. Newer battery technology is a good example where Kärcher cordless battery vacuum cleaners can achieve productivity gains of up to 23 per cent, but the resistance to change to this labour-saving technology by some BSCs is somewhat surprising.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY TRENDS IN 2019? DO YOU EXPECT THOSE TO CONTINUE? Battery technology continues to grow as cleaning operators require increased access without the limitations of electrical cords. Majority of our scrubber drier machines are now battery driven and this has cascaded down to our smaller machines, particularly vacuums and compact scrubber driers. We will continue to see the battery extend into other cleaning machinery areas where corded options were only available up unto recent. 28 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
WHAT ROLE WILL ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION PLAY IN 2020?
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? From a cleaning machinery perspective, we are seeing a trend towards customers prioritising after sales service solutions when looking to purchase cleaning machinery. In the past customers may have been tempted by the lower price of non-branded machines but when the true downtime cost associated is factored into the overall price, the cheaper machine can end up being significantly more expensive.
WHAT IS ONE ISSUE THE INDUSTRY SHOULD URGENTLY ADDRESS IN 2020? A recent industry conference in New Zealand highlighted a study which showed the high injury rates of cleaners from back related incidents. One area the cleaning industry can address is encouraging BSC cleaners to remove the weight of backpack vacuums from the cleaner and replace with a pull along canister vacuum. New cordless canister vacuum technology gives the operator the freedom to clean without any electrical cord to manage or negotiate and therefore provide more comfort and ultimately increased productivity from reduced downtime and increased work performance. ■
LEADERS FORUM
Makita New Zealand Jamie Teague, National Sales Manager HOW WAS 2019 FOR MAKITA? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? Overall 2019 was a great year for Makita. We released our 18V Brushless stick vacuum range in June which has provided the market with high performing, commercially durable stick vacuums which previously haven’t been available. We enjoyed continued growth across our commercial cleaning distributor network, engaging directly with consumers and establishing new supply chains to handle the demand. Particularly well-performing was our LXT (Lithium eXtreme Technology) Power Garden range which saw significant growth against 2018.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR MAKITA LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020?
“
Customers are becoming more aware of the issues related to having too much weight in a product. In some cases, a few 100g can be the difference in deciding one product over another, particularly for handheld products.
”
30 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
We are still relatively new to the commercial cleaning industry, the main challenge for Makita is remaining front of mind through all stages of the consumers’ decision-making process. Through consistent advertising and customer engagement we are ensuring that when the process begins, consumers will include Makita when looking for solutions. By doing this effectively it will ensure we are in the right position to capitalise on the huge amount of opportunities available. We are excited about the product releases that are planned for 2020 across both our 18V LXT and newly announced 40V Max XGT platforms. Products that will expand our offer for interior cleaning services but will also expand our opportunities further into washroom, hospitality and residential cleaning services.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY CHANGES IN CUSTOMER BEHAVIOUR IN 2019? HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED TO MEET THESE CHANGES? Customers are becoming more receptive to the change to cordless. There are several reasons driving this change, primarily the increased efficiency provided by not having to unwind, plugin and manoeuvre a power lead around as well as significantly reducing the lead
replacement and tagging costs associated with 240V equipment. Inherent in this change is the resulting safety by removing trip hazards from the power lead. We have tailored our offer to educate our customers not only about the products but also on the benefits of our LXT system. A cordless product is only as good as the batteries and chargers that drive it and with 15 years behind the 18V LXT platform, we have a solid base to develop more products that will meet the high demands of commercial cleaners and facilities maintenance staff.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR MAKITA IN 2020? We have always been of the belief whether it’s a vacuum, chainsaw or a drill, the most effective way to sell Makita is to get it in the consumers’ hands so they can see it in action. Our national business development team is focused on engaging with our distributor network and directly with target consumers providing demonstrations, trials and product support to achieve the ideal solution for their application.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY TRENDS IN 2019? DO YOU EXPECT THOSE TRENDS TO CONTINUE INTO 2020? Customers are becoming more aware of the issues related to having too much weight in a product. In some cases, a few 100g can be the difference in deciding one product over another, particularly for handheld products like stick vacuums and blowers. This will continue to be a factor in the decision-making process and as OHS requirements continue to dictate the specifications of products; we will see more products become compact.
IS THERE A MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? Makita is committed to development in battery, charger and brushless motor technology. Expect to see Makita continue to develop our existing product line-up as well as deliver new market leading products to service a wider range of applications and customers. ■

NXP Joe Taylor, CEO
We’re taking care of business
HOW WAS 2019 FOR NXP? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? 2019 was extremely rewarding for NXP. We built our new company following the split from Staples and Office Max. We increased our staff numbers by over 50 per cent, launched our new brand and built our new head office functions in Auckland across supply chain, finance, IT and sales. We added over 2000 new SKUs to our DCs in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, largely across the cleaning, hospitality and kitchen categories. I’m especially grateful to the many customers that re-signed with NXP during this transitional phase and our team who worked hard to deliver record service levels in supply chain and sales.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR NXP IN 2020? Our focus will shift externally. In 2018 we sold the company. In 2019 we built the company. And in 2020 we will grow the company. We have shifted our focus to proactively helping our customers take care of business. During January we re-organised our go to market teams. We’ve restructured the business to have our category and sales teams consolidated into divisions focused heavily on the customer. Our new Cleaning, Care and Hospitality division is over one third of our business, and our facilities and kitchen categories now provide half of our revenues. Innovation around the customer experience will always be a priority for us. 32 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
We are customer obsessed. We will soon launch, specifically for the BSC market, new services such as click and collect and same day delivery. We know flexibility of ordering is important for our customers. Our NXPortal (previously known as NetXpress) will provide recommendations to customers for cost effective alternatives helping them save money during the buying process. In March NXP will launch a new offering, the NXP Advisory Service. This will give NZ businesses direct online access to a procurement portal containing their unique purchasing information. In the reporting suite the customer will see trends, ranking and insights enabling them to make improved purchasing decisions and see who is buying what in their businesses.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MAJOR CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR NXP IN 2020? Our challenge will be building NXP brand awareness. This year marks the 70th anniversary for NXP, we are a proud kiwi business, but our new name is relatively unknown. We differentiate ourselves in the market by building bespoke procurement solutions for NZ businesses, whilst providing seamless end to end online and last mile customer experiences for ordering. Given we have had so many name changes in recent years, Corporate Express, Staples, Winc, and now NXP, we have work to do to remind the market who we are and what we stand for.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY TRENDS IN 2019? DO YOU EXPECT THOSE TO CONTINUE? Sustainable sourcing, CSR programs and environmentally friendly products are a huge trend coming out of 2019 and are here to stay. The 2018 change to China’s recycling import policy was a real game changer in NZ; it shook the market and is what was needed to drive a desire to buy better and minimise waste. Another crucial shock has been the broader outcomes sustainable sourcing program for Government, led by MBIE,
which heavily focuses on waste reduction, NZ ownership and recycling. In 2020 NXP is launching our new line of sustainable products under the name NXPlanet. We already have hundreds of SKUs in the range and have implemented new sourcing programs designed to help NZ businesses procure more sustainably.
ARE THERE ANY INTERNATIONAL TRENDS YOU THINK WILL MAKE THEIR WAY TO NZ IN 2020? There are two trends out of the US that are really starting to make an impact in NZ. The first is transparency and use of data. Organisations like www.puremarket.com are giving consumers insights into exactly what products are made from, where they are sourced and how they are made – Kiwi’s increasingly want to know how their purchases contribute to the local economy. Workplace hygiene is also back on the agenda. Post GFC, and for the last decade, in a bid to reduce operating expenditure many businesses slashed workplace cleaning budgets. As NZ unemployment remains low, staff engagement is an important competitive advantage for businesses, ensuring a great place to work that is germ free and clean is an important element of this conversation.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? Smarter, not harder. Facilities management and cleaning companies are spending more time understanding how product selection and the buying process can either reduce labour or improve productivity. For most cleaning organisations 90 per cent of their variable cost is labour. The trend of trying to save cents on the dollar on poor-quality product at the cost of labour is diminishing every day.
IS THERE A MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? There have been conversations in the larger market regarding the de-bundling of cleaning labour and cleaning products. NXP is not entertaining this conversation and plans to continue to support the BSC market by providing a single source solution for all product sourcing needs. We will continue to put our customers’ needs first, always. ■

Philip Moore Cleaning Supplies Paul Payne, Operations Manager HOW WAS 2019 FOR PHILIP MOORE CLEANING SUPPLIES? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES
“
As more competition enters the market the challenge is to stay ahead of our competition in terms of service and products that we offer.
”
2019 was a period of steady growth in terms of picking up new customers, products and increasing the range of products and solutions to assist customers. A major focus for Philip Moore has been the continued greener evolution of cleaning products and chemicals and assisting customers reducing their carbon footprint or the dependence on harsh chemicals. Being able to offer environmentally friendly products such as DisBin for personal waste or offering a recycling solution for their plastic chemical containers, has been an overwhelming success based on the feedback received from customers. Another highlight was creating a new relationship for distribution of IPC Black is Green vacuums and increasing the range of IPC vacuums that we offer for retail. The loss of two long serving sales staff, one from Wellington and one from Christchurch was the challenge Philip Moore had to overcome in 2019. The institutional knowledge of Philip Moore and our customers that both staff members had, made for a steep learning curve for their respective replacements
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR PHILIP MOORE CLEANING SUPPLIES IN 2020? The immediate focus will be to increase our online presence. The area Philip Moore has been deficient has been our website, this will hopefully be rectified in the first quarter of 2020. As the exclusive New Zealand distributors of IPC Black is Green range of vacuum cleaners, we are exploring further distribution options for the central North Island and the South Island.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WILL BE THE BIG TRENDS OF 2020? The major trend that we are experiencing is the transition away from harsh chemicals to either steam and microfibre chemical free cleaning, or a cleaning regime of eco-friendly chemicals and biodegradable products. 34 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
The factors for change are being driven twofold: Philip Moore’s increasing drive to be more ecofriendly and the end user’s insistence on their cleaners being more environmentally aware.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR PHILIP MOORE CLEANING SUPPLIES LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? Without sounding unoriginal, as more competition enters the market the challenge is to stay ahead of our competition in terms of service and products that we offer. The biggest opportunity for Philip Moore is to expand the number of customers and facilities using steam and microfibre and changing over to chemical free cleaning. Assisting customers overcome the resistance they face from their end user to changing over to chemical free cleaning.
HOW HAVE THE BUYING HABITS OF CUSTOMERS ALTERED OVER THE PAST YEAR? Customers are looking more at the quality of products more. Whilst some customers are driven by price, most customers want quality and the same day service that we offer.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? Customer are more aware of the environmental impact of the products they purchase. There is more interest in the sustainability of the product e.g. what material is it made from, is it made from recycled materials, how long should it last and finally how should it disposed of. This issue is something that I see increasing in 2020, as more and more of our customers have requests from their customers for this information.
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? Philip Moore is still going strong and will be here for the foreseeable future, carrying on the legacy created by Lofty Surridge and improving on his innovations and eye for uniqueness. We are looking forward to the challenges that the future brings. ■

LEADERS FORUM
Proquip New Zealand Kerry Boon, Sales and Marketing Manager HOW WAS 2019 FOR PROQUIP? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? 2019 was an exciting year for Proquip. We launched Proquip Hire and many new products and innovations including cleaning trolleys made of 97 per cent recycled plastic and the Blue Evolution Steam Cleaning System. The challenges we had were keeping up with demand as these things catch on quickly.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR PROQUIP IN 2020? The immediate focus in 2020 is educating cleaners on better and more effective ways of cleaning. A significant step further in cleaning is surface sanitisation. This is a massive focus for Proquip in the coming year as it goes hand in hand with the Blue Evolution Steam Cleaning System launched in 2019. Another focus for Proquip is promoting more sustainable products and practices which have great benefits for safety and the environment.
“
One of the most pressing challenges is to move on from the “bucket, mop and feather duster” approach and embrace newer technologies and systems that drive better cleaning standards, efficiencies and safety.
”
36 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
DID YOU NOTICE ANY TRENDS IN 2019? DO YOU EXPECT THOSE TRENDS TO CONTINUE INTO 2020? We have seen over the last few years a huge advancement in battery technology. This took the largest turn in the NZ cleaning industry in 2019, with the launch of the PacVac Advanced battery vacuum, which was a high demand item for Proquip throughout the year. This is just an example of how better technologies used in cleaning applications can drive efficiency and better safety conditions for our cleaners.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? Having seen the cleaning industry evolve throughout my working career; I think a necessary industry focus is genuine care for the cleaner who is working at the “coal face”. These people largely sit in the lower income bracket and often have families that rely heavily on the important hard work that they do. The dramatic growth in the cleaning franchisee model has presented both
challenges and opportunities in the cleaning industry and I have talked with many industry players in both franchise and company employed cleaner businesses. There are a number of opinions of what changing legislation could do over the coming years. I personally believe that whatever happens, the focus still needs to be on the frontline cleaner at the “coal face” so they are protected and cared for appropriately.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR PROQUIP LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? 2020 is bursting with opportunities, the challenge is to remain focussed on what we do well whilst continuing to present new innovations and ideas to our customers.
ARE THERE ANY INTERNATIONAL TRENDS YOU THINK WILL MAKE THEIR WAY TO NEW ZEALAND IN 2020? Robotics and the use of telemetrics are both clearly in the rapidly developing phase which is the same in many industries. There are some great products out there already and the ISSA Amsterdam Show has a podium dedicated to robotics, which will be on display again in May 2020. I still see that the benefits of current robotic technology are seen in large sites and contracts which we don’t have a large quantity of in New Zealand compared with overseas. This of course will change as technical hurdles are overcome and Proquip are already part of that development. Watch this space!
WHAT IS ONE ISSUE THE INDUSTRY SHOULD URGENTLY ADDRESS IN 2020? I believe that one of the most pressing challenges is to move on from the “bucket, mop and feather duster” approach and embrace newer technologies and systems that drive better cleaning standards, efficiencies and safety. One of the challenges for BSCs and industry suppliers is that the end clients often confuse value with price and focus on their invoice cost as opposed to superior cleaning outcomes. This often results in limited budget for better technologies. ■

LEADERS FORUM
RapidClean NZ Craig Newton, National Manager HOW WAS 2019 FOR RAPIDCLEAN NZ? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? Rapid’s 10 members in New Zealand had a fantastic year of growth. Our members and preferred suppliers returned from the 2018 RapidClean conference in Auckland, with a real sense of unity. From there, the membership grew to 12 over the next seven months, adding members in Whangarei and Rotorua, while also seeking options in Wellington and adding to our existing Auckland base. There were also a number of additional preferred suppliers added in segments to enhance the original supply channel with a flavour of “Kiwi Made”. Rapid NZ is fully New Zealand-owned and is always seeking to support New Zealand made products and services to build an extremely strong platform that supports the local industry. We now have our RapidClean cleaning chemicals and garbage bags made in New Zealand and are supporting other local manufacturers. As Rapid NZ grows, the local opportunities are endless.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR RAPIDCLEAN NZ IN 2020? The immediate focus will be to grow members in the areas of Auckland and Wellington, as well as two or three regional areas, if opportunity exists. Our focus will also be on adding preferred suppliers with the right criteria that will continue to enhance the growth opportunities in NZ. The growth platform will strengthen Rapid NZ’s ability to support local and key accounts nationally. The program is gathering speed now 38 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
and will broaden its reach into the market step by step through 2020.
WHAT DO YOU EXPECT WILL BE THE BIG TRENDS OF 2020? Products and systems that support productivity and profitability in daily activity for cleaners and cleaning companies, as well as deliver savings to the client. There will be more product innovation as well as an increase in eco-solutions and battery-powered technology. Previously in the industry, new technology has been at a high cost, and often ineffective in bettering the business. It will be a back to basics approach, at the right cost, that will benefit the end-user and secure future loyalty.
WHAT KEY ISSUES DO YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY SHOULD BE DISCUSSING IN 2020? The industry needs to implement correct training and support systems for cleaners. This will ensure the right application of products, which in turn will deliver not only happy clients but future opportunity for the business to grow. Ecological innovations are gathering pace at an incredible rate and we foresee that this will only increase as clients seek more supply and service in this area. However, we need to be careful in choice as fashion doesn’t equal function, so the correct choice of product is critical.
WHAT IS ONE ISSUE YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY SHOULD URGENTLY ADDRESS IN 2020? Training, Training, Training (TTT – Train the Trainer). You can never have enough training. With product supply growing at a very fast pace in
LEADERS FORUM the industry, manufacturers and distributors must educate the industry. Without education and knowledge, we are treading water and the wrong product can have immeasurable and long-lasting effects on a business, not to mention fiscal implications. Cleaning will never go away, even with the introduction of automation, there will always be a human element to cleaning. We must continue to focus on the cleaner as they are the end conduit between the innovation and technology available. It is the cleaner that delivers the rise, or fall, of a product or solution to the client. Incorrect or no training can deliver failure, and when asked who is to blame it unfortunately often falls on the cleaner, when in fact if the training and product support had been delivered the outcome would have been very different.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE CLEANING LANDSCAPE EVOLVING INTO 2020? Evolution in the cleaning industry is interesting as the opportunities and options for change and choice is moving at a very fast pace. There’s always human interest for innovation and new products, but there can be lethargy

in the person making ‘change’. Is it that we are generally cautious? Not trusting? Or just not sure? It could be a lack of education as to why change is a positive move for business. Local and global manufacturers spend an incredible amount of money on R&D to innovate an industry and to take a product from an idea on a page to the hands of the user. Change should not be feared. If you are the decision maker, ask to receive proper product education and training so that you can make a positive and informed decision.
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY?
“
As Rapid NZ grows, the local opportunities are endless.
”
Work smarter not harder; embrace change, do not fear it; and support your local New Zealandowned and operated businesses. The big end of town always have their eye on the profit and it rarely stays in NZ, whereas, a locally owned business has all the tools and more to support all levels of the industry. Everyone needs product, support, training, trust and loyalty to grow. RapidClean embodies those sentiments every day ■

Tennant New Zealand Nick Garrety, Regional Manager HOW WAS 2019 FOR TENNANT NZ? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES?
“
2019 was one of the best years in our region’s history.
”
2019 was one of the best years in our region’s history. At the start of the year our main challenge was to get the trust back of our customers after several years of not representing our brand from a direct sales perspective to the standards we set globally. As the year progressed, we saw that come back to exceptional levels in our results across all market sectors. We are seeing our NZ team collaborating at new levels across our direct service team, customer service and operations. This culminated in two national retail contracts with 11 of NZ’s largest sites rolled out fully in less than four weeks.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR TENNANT NZ IN 2020? • Continuing our strong results from 2020 along with expanding our sales team in the North Island with a new territory manager. • The launch of our new IPC brand in early 2020 and creating a more solid distribution network. • Our T7AMR robotic solution will also be a great addition to our fleet in 2020.
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR TENNANT NZ LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? Many NZ businesses are focusing more on the upkeep of their facilities from an H&S standpoint, both indoors and out, meaning sweeping and scrubbing are more prevalent, especially in the industrial space creating many more opportunities. Cheaper product is always a challenge in the industry, however, the launch of our IPC brand will be backed up across Australia and New Zealand, with full aftermarket and factory direct 40 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
service support- this is where customers will see end-to-end value in our offering.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY TRENDS IN 2019? DO YOU EXPECT THOSE TRENDS TO CONTINUE INTO 2020? End users in the BSC/industrial space are looking at quality over a short-term fix, which falls well into our category well. Having the longest lasting brand in the market certainly provides a better ROI.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY CHANGES IN CUSTOMER BEHAVIOUR IN 2019? HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED TO MEET THESE CHANGES? Training certainly has become a key driver for end users and their staff to ensure all aspects of using machinery is covered. Using our “pro panel” technology on the machines which have training videos on board (in 28 languages), has helped stay on top of the demand.
WHAT ROLE WILL INNOVATION PLAY FOR TENNANT IN 2020? Certainly, our T7AMR Robotic solution will have an impact in some of our larger sites across New Zealand. Robotics is still very much in its infancy in New Zealand and will draw some real attention when we get up and running. New products in the smaller commercial sector should also raise a few eyebrows that we will be launching with our distribution partners.
ARE THERE ANY INTERNATIONAL TRENDS YOU THINK WILL MAKE THEIR WAY TO NZ IN 2020? Smaller commercial machines will have more of an impact and we will see less of the traditional mop and bucket. Contracts are getting squeezed
LEADERS FORUM and people need to work smarter on saving labour costs in becoming more productive. From a high-end Tennant perspective, we will be focusing more where we have a competitive advantage such as SweepMax on our mid-size sweepers, and less distracted in areas where we do not. I also think people will start to look at getting a service contract built into their purchase of mid to larger equipment. Something I have noticed becoming more prevalent, and our field direct service techs will be able to keep end user units in great working order.
WHAT IS ONE ISSUE THE INDUSTRY SHOULD URGENTLY ADDRESS IN 2020? Although it has improved significantly, I still feel training is a real issue in some sectors from an upkeep of machines. One thing we provide is comprehensive ongoing help as machinery is so key to many contracts across the country. Providing an excellent platform both on board and off as well as our equipment is simple to use from our quick release magnetic heads to one touch scrub will certainly go a long way to covering these concerns. ■

Tork Professional Hygiene Rob Graham, General Manager We are working to extend our sustainability offering and are currently exploring various end of life options and strategies around encouraging hand towel composting to reduce climate impact. Through life cycle analysis, we uncovered that composting hand towels with commercial composters instead of disposing in landfill reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent.
HOW WAS 2019 FOR TORK? WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS? WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES? It was a very exciting year for Tork with a $23 million investment at our Kawerau site – we installed a new state-of-the-art machine and decommissioned four old converting lines. The investment will deliver enhanced efficiencies, improved product quality, waste reduction and ensure continued reliable local supply of Tork products in New Zealand and Australia. We launched our latest innovation – Tork PeakServe. It is a patented hand towel dispensing system designed for high-traffic washrooms. PeakServe provides 250 percent more hand towels to avoid run outs and cuts refill time in half. We’ve also completed new installs of Tork EasyCube which is the world’s leading facility management software for data-driven cleaning. It empowers cleaning teams with new and smarter ways of working by delivering information that allows cleaners to work more efficiently. Whilst overall economic conditions have been challenging in 2019, Tork continued to be the leading professional hygiene brand globally and has experienced another year of high growth on our differentiated products, such as, Tork SmartOne which reduces toilet paper consumption by up to 40 percent.
WHAT WILL BE THE IMMEDIATE FOCUS FOR TORK IN NZ IN 2020? Product innovation and sustainability will continue to be the focus for Tork in 2020. We have our strongest pipeline of new product launches into the market which are designed to improve hygiene and cleaning efficiencies as well as reduce waste. 42 INCLEAN NEW ZEALAND February 2020
WHAT CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE FOR TORK IN NZ LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020? When it comes to sustainability trying to decipher what is accurate and what is not can be difficult. Just because a product is recyclable or made of bamboo doesn’t necessarily mean it is better for the environment, so it is vital to fact check. Tork sees this as an opportunity and will continue to provide transparent full life cycle information.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY CHANGES IN CUSTOMER BEHAVIOUR IN 2019? HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED THE OFFERING TO MEET THESE CHANGES IN 2020? There has been a shift in purchasing behaviour with more customers wanting to make more sustainable choices and many organisations are setting goals around climate change and waste reduction. We have a long history of leadership in this area. Our Kawerau manufacturing site replaced gas-fired steam production with naturally occurring geothermal steam through a partnership with local Iwi and Ngata Tuwharatoa Geothermal Assets and as a result we have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 46 percent. We also provide complete transparency on climate impact with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). EPDs are independently verified reports on life cycle analysis which have calculated that Tork products are produced with between 64 to 76 percent renewable energy at Kawerau as a result of using geothermal steam. We currently have 12 published EPDs.
To address waste concerns, we have reduced our packaging by 20 percent on our new converting line which is equivalent to 143 tonnes per year. We are working to decrease the amount of virgin material in packaging and have made a commitment to have 100 percent recyclable packaging by 2025.
DID YOU NOTICE ANY TRENDS IN 2019? DO YOU EXPECT THOSE TRENDS TO CONTINUE INTO 2020? We see a major opportunity heading into 2020 with an acceleration of new technology adoption in the cleaning industry. To date there has been a slow transition of old traditional manual methods to new digital solutions. Tork EasyCube is a great solution that provides real-time data, enabling cleaners to act on what’s needed, when and where. It also improves quality and increases productivity. There is also a growing expectation from customers of transparency on the environmental impact from ‘cradle to grave’. Tork is working with our customers and suppliers on improving sustainability outcomes throughout the entire supply chain.
WHAT IS ONE ISSUE YOU THINK THE INDUSTRY SHOULD BE URGENTLY DISCUSSING IN 2020? Organisations need to embrace ways to reduce their impact on climate change, ensure ethical sourcing in procurement, reduce waste and work towards circularity.
IS THERE ONE KEY MESSAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE INDUSTRY? Tork encourages thinking ahead. As washrooms typically only receive a makeover every 10 years, it is important to plan out your design and product choices. Rather than just replacing like for like, it is a great chance to source new products that will enhance cleaning efficiency, reduce your environmental impact and make a better impression on your washroom visitors. The Tork range of professional hygiene products is designed to meet these expectations, so you can focus on what matters most to your business. ■
