n Friday, 19 January at around midday, a Nissan bakkie was coming down the road at Noiz Street, better known as the ZCC Church Street, towards the T-Junction at Lomond Street. The bakkie driver lost control due to a brake failure and the bakkie went straight into Me. Agnes Mofokeng’s shack in Ext. 8 Bohlokong, destroying several items. No-one was in the shack at the time as they were outside under a tree. They heard a big

bang and when they rushed over to see what was happening. To their shock a Nissan bakkie was in their house! The damaged items items include 2 fridges, electrical and coal stoves, a television, table and chairs and 2 cellphones. Ward 6 Councillor Me. Jane Twala, CDW and members from the office of the Speaker arrived when they received a call to visit the scene. On the same day the shack was fixed with poles and corrugated iron provided by the bakkie driver. The story has a good end-

ing. On Monday, 22 January, the bakkie driver together with some friends replaced all the damaged items items and repaired what needed repairing. Me. Mofokeng is appealing to the Municipality to put a barrier of some kind in front of her shack as this is the second time such an incident has happened. In photo: A Nissan Bakkie full of snacks and drinks hit the shack. Inset: The Bakkie is removed from the shack by community members. By Edward Mokoena

undreds of learners from different school gathered at Rantsane Secondary School in Makwane village, Qwaqwa on Friday for the Promaths Awards Ceremony 2018 where learners who are part of the Kutlwanong Centre of Mathematics, Science and Technology (based locally at Tshiya Resource Centre) which partners with Investec Specialist Bank, received awards, certificates and cash for obtaining good results in Mathematics and Physical Science in the 2017 Matic Exams. Head of Corporate Social Investment (CSI) from Investec, Setlogane Manchidi said the event was held to motivate learners to study gateway subjects like Mathematics and Physical Science that are needed to grow the economy of the country. Head of Cooperate Social Investment (CSI) from Investec Setlogane “We want the African child to play a pivotal role in the world economy,’’ said Manchidi. According to Manchidi some of the learners received R15 000 for their studies at Tertiary level. He said the majority of these learners who completed Grade 12 with flying colours will be studying medicine or engineering at different tertiary institutions. Manchidi indicated that in 2005 Investec and Kutlwanong formed a partnership to start a programme called Promaths Bursary Fund. It started with hundreds learners in 2005 in Soweto, and

has since spread countrywide. Currently the programme has four thousands learners sponsored by Investec throughout South Africa. Locally the Kutlwanong ‘Promaths’ programme is held every weekend at Tshiya Resource Centre and assists Math and Science learners in Grades 10, 11 and 12 in these subjects. CEO and Founder of Kutlwanong Centre for Mathematics, Physical Science and Technology Tumelo Mabitsela said their role as a Centre is to help learners to become part of the economy. He said Mathematics and Physical Science are the most sought after subjects in the country. “We encourage learners to become engineers, doctors, artisans and work in those fields required by the country to improve the economy,’’ said Mabitsela. Free State Department of Education Deputy Director General Motseki Monnane said their relationship with the two stakeholders is very good. He added that this weekend progamme for Mathematics and Physical Science helps Thabo Mofutsanyana District to always finish tops in both subjects. For more info visit the Kutlwanong Website or call (011) 475 7119. How to know if you have Listeriosis

S

outh Africa is currently faced with an outbreak of listeriosis which worsened in December 2017. By 12 January there were 748 confirmed cases and 67 deaths countrywide. Individuals should know what the symptoms are. Listeriosis is a deadly, but treatable and preventable disease caused by a bacterium called listeria. The bacteria can be found in natural resources like water, soil and vegetables and even in meat and fruit. The bacteria can be easily consumed by non-suspecting individuals. When infected; you will have the following symptoms: Flu like illness with diarrhoea including fever, general body pains, vomiting and weakness. If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. When the infection reaches the blood stream it is called septiceamia Meningoencephalitis (infection of the brain). Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness. Individuals at high risk of developing this severe disease include newborns, the

elderly, pregnant women, or persons with weak immunity suffering from HIV, diabetes, cancer, chronic liver or kidney disease. According to a report by the Department of Health, the age groups that are most affected are neonates (new born children), that means the first 28 days of life (37%) and the age group between 15 to 49 years (33%). The report states that the two groups comprise 70 per cent of all cases. To prevent listeriosis, individuals should do the following: Do not drink raw (unpasteurized) milk, and do not eat foods that has unpasteurized milk in them. Wash hands, knives, countertops, and cutting boards after handling and preparing uncooked foods. Rinse raw produce (vegetables and fruits)

Competition is vaild until end of January 2018

thoroughly under running tap water before eating. Keep uncooked meat, poultry, and seafood separate from vegetables, fruit, cooked foods, and ready-to-eat foods. Thoroughly cook raw food from animal sources, such as meat, poultry, or seafood to a safe internal temperature. Consume perishable and ready-to-eat foods (take-aways)

as soon as possible. Persons in higher risk groups should heat hot dogs (viennas), cold cuts, and deli meats before eating them. In photo: The Listeria bacteria that causes listeriosis. In photo: Washing of hands with soap can help prevent listeriosis. By Johnson Qobo

T

he Tseseng Rellela Makgulo Volunteer Anti-Stock Theft Unit recovered 238 sheep and a goat at Matjekatjeka Cattle Posts in the foothills of Drakensberg Mountains near QwaQwa and handed the livestock to the police on 16 January. EFS SAPS Communication Officer Sergeant Mmako Mophiring explained how this Voluntary Stock Theft Unit works, “Members of ‘Rellela Makgulo’ a volunteer Anti-Stock Theft Unit, which works closely with the police in stock theft crime prevention, voluntarily use their own horses to access and reach cattle posts in the mountainous area of QwaQwa, where livestock is kept on the outskirts of the villages under supervision of shep-

herds. The team is known for making large number of livestock recoveries in Tseseng and for assisting Stock Theft Investigators in their work, voluntarily without any remuneration. He said the area of Tseseng Village borders on Lesotho and that cross border crime of stock theft is prioritized. According to Mophiring the team received information from Lesotho on 14 January of stolen livestock in the Mahlasela Mountains in Lesotho. Riding 5 horses they took a five hour trip into the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains. On arrival at the cattle post they identified a large number of suspected stolen livestock (sheep) and two suspects fled the scene on foot. They established that the two sus-

pects were busy inserting new brand markings, as the sheep were bleeding on their ears. The team informed the police of the findings and brought the livestock down to Tseseng Police Station where the lawful owner arrived from Maseru and positively identified his livestock. “I really cannot express the feeling towards the loyal members of this Unit. I know their wonderful works and good relationships they have with the police in recovering livestock in the mountains,’’ said Tumisang Lesesa (55) owner of the recovered sheep. session of brand new stolen tyres linked to a Harrismith theft case. On 15 January, 2018 at approximately 17:00 the police from Harrismith Highway Patrol communicated a positive case of theft of tyres from a storeroom in Harrismith to a certain place in Qwaqwa. According to EFS SAPS Sergeant Mmako Mophiring, the Phuthaditjhaba COCC-Crime Combating Unit followed up on the information which led them to Mountain View at Makwane Village where seven tyres

from a certain company were found. The tyres have an estimated street value of R42 000. Mophiring said the suspect could not provide any proof of purchase for the tyres and was arrested and detained at the Police Station for possession of suspected stolen property. The tyres are linked to a theft of tyres case opened in Harrismith during the same week. In photo: The stolen tyres found in Makwane, Qwaqwa. By Letsielo Mosia

Thabo Mokoena, the organization’s Monitoring and Evaluation Officer said that their programme of helping needy learners with their school work started three years ago. Mokoena said, “It was very painful to see that the books of learners who come from poor households are not covered when the school’s reopened and so we launched our “Back to school campaign aimed at helping these learners.

According to Mokoena, members from organizations including Love Life, SOS, Save the Children South Af Africa, New Start, DDI and Dinkweng Drugs and Alcohol Organization joined them to cover the books. The learners who benefited from this campaign attend Manankwe Secondary, Manthatisi Secondary, Matswakeng Intermediate, Pheta Intermediate, Thibella Intermediate, Koos Mota Intermediate, Tseseng Primary, Sedibeng Primary and Sekgompepe Primary School. Eagles bow to Real Kings uper Eagles FC’s hopes of a second away win were shattered by high flying Real Kings on Saturday

S

afternoon at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban. Eagles went into the game after an impressive away win in Pretoria. Real Kings’ game plan showed during set pieces. Real Kings received a corner kick in the early stages but Eagles’ goalkeeper brilliantly collected

it. A few minutes later in the 19th minute Thabang Matjeni lost the ball and Kings attacked, but the danger was cleared for a corner. Eagle’s failed to defend and a free header by Kings broke the deadlock. Eagles immediately responded with a Perekisi Motlatsi long range shot that missed the target, after he was afforded space to pull the trigger. With the Bethlehem outfit gaining confidence, Likontsane Julias combined well with Modibedi Mokoena getting a space to shoot, but his attempt was deflected for a corner kick. Super Eagles pushed and piled pressure on Kings, which responded by defending deep, resulting in Perekisi Motlatsi being fouled outside the eighteen yard area. Mohori Njabulo stepped up and his free kick crashed against the crossbar denying Eagles an equaliser. Four minutes before half

way. Players are motivated when they see the supporters singing and chanting for them on the stands. On 15 January, the Nedbank last 32 draw was conducted with Eagles being paired with high flying Free State Stars in what will be a Bethlehem Derby. The supporters are excited about what promises to be an exciting and mouthwatering clash of the season. More info to be provided The focus of the team at the moment is on the continued fight to survive the relegation battle. The next game for Eagles

Eagles Supporters Corner agles were hoping to continue with their winning momentum, playing away from home as in the last game, where they defeated the University of Pretoria away. This time around the results were not so positive as Eagles lost 3-1to Real Kings in Durban on 20 January. The technical team, the players and the supporters’ of the team were disappointed about the results however all is not lost. If there is ever a time for supporters to rally behind the team it is when the team is going through a rough patch. The team’s supporters will remain behind the team all the

time Kings’ leading goalscorer made it two after Eagles were caught wanting, giving the home team a two-goal cushion. Five minutes into the second half Selepe’s great footwork gave him an opportunity to pull one for the visitors but was he blocked before he could produce a shot. With Eagles putting the home team under pressure in the 60th minute, Matjeni’s shot was saved by the Kings keeper for a corner. The Bethlehem outfit again failed to cause major problems for Kings during the corner. Real Kings overcame the siege they were under, by taking back control of the game in the 65th minute. Kings eventually put the game beyond Eagles’ reach when they scored their third goal of the game making sure that they keep their title-chasing hopes alive. Mlungisi Nkosi scored a goal for Eagles in the 90th minute. The game ended 3-1 in favour of Kings. Eagles will host Stellenbosch on the weekend at Goble Park stadium.
