DE A R M A R DI GR A S GUESTS WE LCO M E TO HAVANA N I G HTS! Havana today is a renowned tourist attraction—a city of music, dance, vibrant colors, and the joyful exuberance of its people. But historically, Havana will forever be part of the Ursuline story.

For twenty brief years, 1941 to 1961, the Ursuline Sisters had a school in Havana. Merici Academy was an acclaimed and beautiful all-girls school, comparable in Havana to Ursuline Academy in Dallas.

With the revolution of 1961 and the take-over of all religious properties, the Sisters were forced to leave. Some fled to New Orleans, where the displaced Sisters were graciously welcomed and embraced. We honor those Sisters tonight, their perseverance, and the manifestation of their vision for an Ursuline education in today’s world.

Havana has a rich and colorful history and still conjures images of decades past with vintage American cars and Art Deco architecture. As alumnae of Ursuline Academy, we are honored to chair Mardi Gras this year, and hope to raise a lot of money for girls who dream of an education that has been so impactful in our lives. Bid often and generously on the many unique items and experiences offered tonight! Our event success is in large part due to our outstanding team of volunteers. Your ideas, talents and countless hours of hard work have made the dream of tonight a reality. Each committee member has helped stamp our passports to Havana with smiles, fun and friendship. To our Honorary Chairs, the Diane and Sam K. Smith Family, a heartfelt thank you. You truly embody the spirit of Ursuline Academy through your dedication to our community and your spirit of Serviam. And, to our underwriters, we are beyond grateful for your generosity. Tonight would not have been possible without your support. Lastly, but never least, thank you to our three husbands and 12 children for your support and enthusiasm during our journey—especially our daughters, current and future bears, Emily ’22, Kate and Olivia Askew, Kinsley ’16, Kelsey ’18, Katie Grace ’21, and Karoline Cook, and Elizabeth ’20, Catherine ’22, and Annie Housson. We love you and could not have done it without your support. Enjoy your night in Havana, the birthplace of the mambo and cha cha, as we dance the night away raising money for the “if only” girls of Ursuline Academy.

DE A R UR SU LINE FR IENDS, WE AR E E XCITE D AN D H O N O R E D TO WE LCO M E YO U TO HAVANA N I G HTS , U RS U LI N E ’ S 201 9 MAR DI G R A S . Every person here tonight has been touched by the benefits of an Ursuline education—spiritual development, greater emotional intelligence, critical thinking, laughter, and lifelong friendships. Ursuline’s Mardi Gras is a time to celebrate these benefits. But, more importantly, Ursuline’s Mardi Gras raises scholarship monies to help ensure that all deserving applicants will have access to these benefits, regardless of financial circumstances. All of us who attended Ursuline did so because others (parents, grandparents, others) made it possible. Here at Havana Nights 2019, let’s help make it possible for others. Our family extends thanks to all those at Ursuline who have worked so hard on this event, including the co-chairs, the many volunteers, and the Ursuline leadership. And we thank the many teachers and staff members at Ursuline, both past and present, who helped navigate the daughters and granddaughters of Diane and Sam Smith through the waters of the high school years.

Each year the mission-inspired giving of our donors provides essential funds for scholarships, faculty support, long-term facilities maintenance and operating costs that are not covered by tuition. Each year the Mardi Gras gala recognizes the establishment of new named scholarship endowments. THE MAURICE AND MARY GR ANT ENDOWED SCHOL A RSHIP This endowed scholarship is given in honor of Maurice and Mary Grant by their granddaughter, Maria Anderson ’17. Maurice and Mary raised their five children with an unshakable dedication to education, and their children have instilled this value in their own children. In more than sixty years of marriage, Maurice and Mary have seen their legacy of charity, compassion, and dedication lived out in their ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. With this scholarship, that same legacy will continue to encourage young people to pursue an education at Ursuline Academy.

THE SISTER MARY TROY, O.S.U. ’51 ENDOWED SCHOL A RSHIP

Sr. Mary Troy has touched countless lives in her 65 years as an Ursuline Sister. Her devotion to the Ursuline Mission has touched our community in countless ways over her last 25 years in Dallas – educating young women through spiritual formation, intellectual growth, service to others, and building of community. “Mardi Gras, with its countless generous volunteers, works to offer the opportunity of an Ursuline education to those girls who dream of going to Ursuline, but who say, “If only my family could afford it.” Mardi Gras is for the “if only” girls. I am proud and privileged to support Mardi Gras in any way I can.” — Sr. Mary Troy, O.S.U. ’51

THE HA ZEL FUESS WING ’4 0 ENDOWED SCHOL A RSHIP Even as a young girl, as her Dad later described her, Hazel was always fun to be around. She never met a stranger and made friends with everyone. All were included in her circle. Throughout her life, Hazel was generous in offering encouragement, a word of advice, or a shoulder to cry on for friends and family alike. She was very creative in the arts, music, design and sewing, and she was always sunnily optimistic. She kept her family laughing with her often unintentional hilarious observations. Hazel had unbounded curiosity about everything, and she never stopped studying and learning. We are so happy to establish this Scholarship Fund in our Mother’s memory. — Beryl Wing ’63, Susan Wing Oglesby ’65 and M. B.
