Sure they make his life hell, but again, they may be angels in disguise. With exhilarating kick-boxing scenes edited at a furious pace abundant, director Dante Lam also fashions a warming drama about love, loyalty and redemption.

Director François Ozon has made his own contemporary spin on the Luis Bunuel classic Belle de Jour by returning to the provocative topic of teenage female sexuality à la 2004’s Swimming Pool . Broken into four seasonal chapters, the film chronicles a year in bourgeois 16-yearold Isabelle’s life as she loses her virginity and begins to double as a student and as a prostitute. Though Ozon keeps the girl’s motivations opaque, the resulting portrait of youth and beauty as a commodity is ultimately richer and more beguiling because of the mystery.

導演:般奴杜蒙 法國 2013 97分鐘 一部導和演同樣震撼的電影。故事始於《羅丹的情 人》落幕之後,比羅丹更有天份的卡蜜兒給誤關精神 病院的後半生,就濃縮在等待弟弟解救的三天裏。鏡 頭守着茱麗葉庇樂仙,拍卡蜜兒在古老病院內晃蕩, 躲避怪住客,為自己煮吃(因害怕羅丹落毒)。是真 病院,真病者,真正照顧他們的護士。杜蒙(《魔非 魔》,36屆)沒有劇本,一直即興,對庇樂仙如同折 磨,失衡狀態,在失衡處境,不就是卡蜜兒受煎熬的 情狀麼!幾個精神病人成了主要角色,鏡頭的尊重和 紀錄,你就知道杜蒙也講他們的故事。看病者跟庇樂 仙擦身而過,已夠令人不安的。

這將是你看過最迷惑、最黑暗的克萊雅丹妮(《白 鬼》,34屆)作品。海員歸來,家庭巨變,親弟被逼 自殺,小姨遭暴力性侵,盡見社會的弱肉強食。與此 同時他入侵潛行,搭上對頭的情婦,伺機復仇,漂流 心不斷下沉,頓為死水溦爛。丹妮不諱言要在Vincent Lindon身上,對照三船敏郎的溫柔硬漢身影,尋找黑 澤明式一個人對抗世界,像《寂靜的決鬥》感染中磨 煉,像《惡漢甜夢》承受宿命成為暗黑物質,豈止復 仇,非關墮落,抵觸人間魔咒。尾段動作場面有令人 透不過氣的冷調心理追蹤,審視現代社會蠶食人心的 悲劇性。
與《林布蘭的夜巡》(32屆) 及《磨坊與十字架》(36 屆) 同一的創作精神,今次和電影crossover的,是 Edward Hopper十三幅畫。一開場主角走進神乎其技 的名畫場景,畫面頓時活過來,驚艷得無法相信自己 眼睛。多殊以現成鏡頭二次創作成名,他細細推敲 Hopper,利用燈光、顏色、佈局、鏡頭重現幾乎不可 能的三維場景和氣氛,串起故事的,是虛構的雪莉, 一個獨立思考的演員。雪莉走過歷史時刻,大戰大蕭 條冷戰越戰,藍調貓王搖滾反戰歌,她會催眠的肢體 語言演繹着反省和獨白。那可會是畫家的發聲?更勾 魂的是,雪莉一直不老,一如Hopper。

With the Humanité and Flanders director at the helm, this Camille Claudel is evidently not a rehash of the earlier Isabelle Adjani-starring biopic of the famed sculptor. Centering on the troubled later period of the sculptress’ life, the film generated controversy with its casting of real disabled persons as Claudel’s fellow asylum inmates. But this almost Bressonian work is possibly Dumont’s most intellectually rigorous yet, anchored by one of Juliette Binoche’s most accomplished performances to date. The portrayal of a crisis of faith has rarely been so moving or authentic.
The provocative title makes it abundantly clear that this is Claire Denis at her uncompromising best. Ace frequent partners Agnes Godard (cinematography) and the Tindersticks (music) return for the director’s first venture into genre territory since Trouble Every Day . A somber, violent revenge noir, the Paris-set film carries over the hard-hitting brutality of Denis’ last feature White Material. Aided by a superb cast and magnificent mise-en-scene, a loose plot unfolds about a family forced into bankruptcy by a wealthy businessman, and the price paid to exact vengeance.
What if these paintings spoke….moved…really were frozen instants in complex lives? Filmmaker Deutsch and masterful cinematographer Jerzy Palacz and crew lovingly reconstruct thirteen paintings from American artist Edward Hopper that apparently froze the light and lives of the United States from the 1930s to the 1960s. And then they set these tableaux into motion, following the lives of Shirley and her photojournalist partner Stephen in eras of radical social confrontations and personal challenges. An experimental exploration of art, society and levels of meaning, bathed in the lite and color of Hopper’s iconic works.

After his 2008 international success Tokyo Sonata , Kurosawa returns to the big screen with a riveting adaptation of bestselling sci-fi novel A Perfect Day for Plesiosaur. A year after his childhood friend-turned-lover Atsumi attempted suicide and lapsed into a coma, Koichi tries out an advanced neurosurgical procedure called “sensing” and connects with Atsumi’s mind to find out why she wanted to die. In this subconscious realm she asks him to find a picture of a plesiosaur she drew as a child, which would become the key to the mystery… Convincingly moving perfs from media darlings Sato and Ayase in this story about trauma, memory, and love.

Dreamergo, born and raised in Hong Kong, has been an illustrator for over 30 years. With a small but visionary pair of eyes, he has been observing the world and drawing since he was 3 years old. His vivid drawings express love with passion and vision. Incorporating fantasy and romance, the “Spaceship” design this year encourages filmgoers to embark on an "Out of this world" adventure which reminds us that film can take us out of our normal lives. The Spaceship also ties in with the climax of the Cine Fan August programme, where one must-see science fiction film from film history will be screened – 2001: A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick.

Young scholar Sanna thinks she knows it all: as part of her master’s thesis, she makes documentaries about couples – young and old, married and divorced – and has concluded that there are, well, 21 ways to ruin a marriage, from cheating and being clingy to substance abuse and talking too much. Just when she thinks she is done with love and its hypocrisy, settling for a carefree life of harmless ONS, she meets a recently divorced interviewee who might just prove her theory wrong… A massive box office hit in Finland, this comedy is a cynically funny reflection on love, however long it lasts.
For news reporter Laetitia, May 6th 2012 is an eventful day, what with Sarkozy toppled and Hollande and the socialists swept into power. But reporting upon these monumental events isn’t enough – she must also juggle her demanding exhusband, her frazzled babysitter and an unhinged “lawyer” in the service of her ex! Marking a sea change from usual Gallic comedy conventions, Age of Panic features documentarystyle footage that places the actors right within the midst of the actual election day chaos. Punk bands repudiate mainstream society. But what if society has already rejected the players from birth? Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, a Finnish punk band, formed by adults dealing with autism and Down syndrome, was brought together in 2009 by an NGO that provides housing and support. Since then, the band members have built a successful career turning their different abilities into challenges to everyday frustrations, institutional life and discrimination in liberal Finnish society. bbas Kiarostami was born in 1940 in Tehran, Iran. He first began making short films in 1970 and was known to be part of the early Iranian New Wave of directors. International recognition started in the 1980s with feature films that focused on the lives of children, especially his unofficial trilogy of Where Is the Friend's Home? , And Life Goes On... and Through the Olive Trees. Later, he developed an increasingly complex technique of blurring fiction and reality, with each film attempting to reveal the illusory structure of the last. The young man and woman are shown as actors “playing” a scene – but their fictional characters and real selves begin to blur. As the Hossein has been courting Farkhonde in “real” life, the director begins advising him behind the scenes. The outcome remains a mystery, as the tension of life, nature, and cinema continues to pull in every direction.

Perhaps the film that made Kiarostami a household name in international arthouse cinema, Taste of Cherry is also his bleakest – at least at first glance. The middle-aged Mr. Badii goes on a road trip to commit suicide and tries to convince the people he meets along the way to help him. Eventually an old Turkish taxidermist agrees, but guides him on a scenic detour instead. The final twist proves Kiarostami’s masterful skill at evoking truth, beauty, and the shock of reality, even when we least expect it. Winner of the 1997 Cannes Palme d’Or.

Kiarostami takes us on the road again – this time to a remote Kurdish village where a group of outsiders from the city have just arrived with mysterious intentions. Kiarostami offers a poignant glimpse into the close yet distant relationship between local and global, urban and rural, and the human and its environment.

年的日本導演之一,他那「驚世駭俗」的《感官
初逝世的大島渚應該是香港以至世界觀眾最熟悉
世界》讓不少不是影迷的社會大眾都聽過他的大名。 大島渚生於1932年,京都大學法學部畢業。他因為學 生時代太過投入學生運動,畢業後求職困難,最終進 入了松竹片廠。在1959年初執導筒,拍攝《愛與希 望之街》。當時日本的片廠順應時代,讓年輕的副導 演升任導演,而在這個順流下,大島和篠田正浩、吉 田喜重等新銳導演掀起松竹新浪潮,最後離開片廠獨 立拍片。因為學運的經驗,大島不時通過電影創作反 省日本戰後的社會運動,其中最著名的作品是《日本 之夜與霧》,這部作品成就了他大師之名。而《感官 世界》則讓他走進國際,開始拍攝國際合作的電影。
不過他的創作高峰還是在離開松竹之後。他拍了如 《白晝的色魔》、《飼育》、《忍者武藝帳》、《少 年》、《絞死刑》、《日本春歌考》、《儀式》等一 系列作品,同時亦參與電視製作,拍了一系列的劇情 片及紀錄片。其作品主題多涉及社會運動、情慾的探 討,以及在日韓國人的境況等。期間不少作品,大島 渚皆與日本藝術影院聯盟(ATG)合作,以一千萬日圓 的名義,拍攝了一系列的低成本作品,但當中的手法 各異,風格多變,充分顯示了導演在資源不足的情況 下靈活變通,一點也不減損作品想要表達的主題,以 及觀賞的價值。這段時期的作品,可以說是他創作生 涯的精華所在。

master of Japanese cinema who proclaimed “My hatred for Japanese cinema includes absolutely all of it.” A politicized critic of the 1960s, famous for issues of sex and censorship surrounding his In the Realm of the Senses (1976). Oshima died at age 80 this year after years of ill health, yet, his works continue to interrogate his nation and filmgoers worldwide. Born in a Kyoto family of samurai heritage but reduced means, Oshima studied at Kyoto University before sliding into film production with Shochiku. He released his first feature, A Town of Love and Hope , in 1959. Many of his early films dealt with students and their critiques of Japanese postwar society. Violence at High Noon (1966), like Senses , a film based on real life violence, explored the intense psychodynamics of a murderer and the women around him while underscoring the death of illusions in Japan. Oshima proved himself a critical observer of Japanese classes and issues. Boy (1969), for example, transformed a
news story into a social parable: we see Japan through a child whose parents live by throwing him into traffic and extorting motorists with his suffering. Turning from the have-nots to the haves, in The Ceremon (1971), Oshima eviscerated traditional bourgeois narratives of matrimony and inheritance in a critique of Japanese ritualization and hollowness. Oshima also explored Japan’s past, especially the samurai era, which he viewed through a sexual lens in his final Gohatto (1999). Those familiar with this work –and other audiences – will appreciate his earlier venture into samurai stories, the unique 1969 Band of Ninja (Ninja Bugeicho ). Here, Oshima recreated an anime story by Sampei Shirato, enriching each page with sounds, voices, music and narration. Oshima was a filmmaker who worked constantly to reinvent himself, and to challenge and irritate Japan. These selections show his power as both creator and critic, interpreter and visionary, in Japan but not always of it.

Beginning another film from the brutality of real events – a serial killer of the 1950s who murdered women in daytime – Oshima adds layers of complexity that explore the dreams and failures of Japanese society as a whole. The killer becomes human, shaped by attempts at collective farming and followed by a former coworker and his wife, who struggle to understand his horrific violence against them and others. The film also explores a new formal complexity as montages and hundreds of rapid shots refract the questions of meaning, destruction and comprehension. Considered the first masterpiece of Oshima’s mature production.

A unique excursion into anime within Oshima’s evercreative career. Playing with the samurai stories that fascinated him like so many other Japanese filmmakers, the story follows a young boy finding his place with ninja during a peasant rebellion. Yet, Oshima takes the popular manga Ninja Bugei-cho by Sampei Shirato at face value, lovingly shooting each drawn page and interlayering the succession of still photographs with a complex story told through voices, sounds, narration and music. Oshima’s probing study of the crises of the Japanese bourgeoisie, artfully portrayed through the weddings and funerals that swirl around the protagonist, Masuo, his cousin Ritsuko and their mutual love and competition for another cousin, Terumichi. As this merchant clan struggles to maintain appearances of prosperity and guarantee an heir through inbreeding, recurrent absences and deaths reveal the hollowness of their sacrifices: a wedding without a bride, households haunted by lost members rather than growing and flourishing. Oshima, moreover, uses this complex genealogy to criticize his own country, trapped in formalities and excluding outsiders and changes.

Dir: Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Tseng Chuang-Hsiang, Wan Jen Taiwan 1983 106min Widely regarded as the film that ushered in the New Taiwanese Cinema, The Sandwich Man , adapted from novelist Huang Chun-Ming’s stories, is an omnibus that features three separate, socially critical short films. The first 30-minute segment is directed by master director Hou Hsiao-Hsien, and its opening shot of a man in clown makeup walking down a small-town street still resonates to this day. Though the scenario reflects Taiwan’s economic and social struggles during the ’60s, the story remains just as relevant today in the age of Occupy Wall Street and wage inequalities. The other two shorts are just as harsh in its political observations, revealing Taiwan at a time when it struggled to define its identity under the influence of Japan’s emerging economic clout and America’s Cold War doctrine.

Please note that Ticket Discount Offers are NOT applicable to Online Ticketing / Phone Ticketing / Postal Booking. 3. 換領門票╱禮品╱紀念品時,會員必須出示有效之電影節發燒友(HKIFF Cine Fan)會員卡作核對。For the redemption and collection of tickets /gifts / souvenirs , privilege holders must present their valid privilege card for verification. 4. 電影節發燒友(HKIFF Cine Fan)會員卡不得轉讓予他人使用。如發現任何違規使用情況,有關場地負責人或香港國際電影節協會將有權即時終止會員資格。已繳交 之會費一律不獲退還。Privilege is non-transferable. If evidence of misuse and abuse of privileges are found, the venue management or HKIFFS have the right to confiscate the card at any time without prior warning. Replacement cards are available at a re-issue fee of HK$50. 6. 如遺失電影節發燒友(HKIFF Cine Fan)會員卡,請即向香港國際電影節協會報失。補領電影節發燒友(HKIFF Cine Fan)會員卡之費用為港幣$50。Loss of privilege card must be reported at once. Ticket Collection Service is not available at Hong Kong Science Museum and the Grand Cinema. Customers are advised to collect the tickets at any of the ticket collection points before going to these screening venues to avoid delay in admission. * 於UA朗豪坊及The Grand Cinema 舉行的電影節目,城市電腦售票網將於放映前一天之下午5時停止發售門票。觀眾請於翌日起到放映場地 票房購票,售完即止。 * For screenings at the UA Langham Place and the Grand Cinema, tickets are available at URBTIX till 5:00pm one day before respective screenings, after which tickets will be available only at the box office of these two venues respectively on the next day, subject to availability.

節目如有更改或取消,觀眾可按原定時間入場觀看替代影片,或可由通知當日起至2013年9月16日申請退票。退票表格可於夏日國際電影節網頁 下載。請將填妥之表格及電影門票,於截止日前寄交香港國際電影節辦事處(香港九龍觀塘道370號創紀之城3期21樓)。本會將以劃線支票寄 回退款給持票人(購票手續費恕不退回)。 香港國際電影節協會保留更改放映節目、時間及地點的權利。有關節目更改或取消的最新消息,請參閱香港國際電影節協會網頁及各放映場地的 通告。 For alteration or cancellation of screenings, ticket holders may choose to attend a screening of a replacement film at the same time slot or to get a refund. Application forms for refund can be downloaded from the Summer IFF website. Completed forms with ticket(s) should be returned by post to the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society Limited (21/F, Millennium City 3, 370 Kwun Tong Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong) on or before 16 September 2013. Refund cheques will be sent to ticket holders by post. (All services fees will not be refunded). The HKIFF Society reserves the right to change the programme and the schedule should unavoidable circumstances make it necessary.
