SUMMER FREEBIES BY AMELIA COOK FONTELLA

ALI EMINOV

Madison has many summer events and activities with the low, low price tag of zero dollars. That’s right, they’re totally free, so let the cost-effective adventures begin!

It’s easy Log-roll (or just watch) on Lake Wingra. Started by 19th-century lumberjacks who would test their bravery after driving logs down rivers, log rolling has grown into a competitive athletic event. You can give rolling a try at one of Madison Log Rolling’s free open houses (June 4, June 12 and June 18) or observe competitors practice all summer long, Mondays through Thursdays, at 5 p.m. The log-rolling fun unfolds near the Wingra Boats boathouse at 824 Knickerbocker St.

Sessionable From honky-tonk to African music to Celtic tunes, the Central Park Sessions offer another rich season of music so good you can’t believe it’s free. Food and beer are sold in this relaxed, neighborhoodfestival atmosphere. Support local nonprofits by buying a raffle ticket or two. The final session — the only one held at another park (Olbrich) — features the Portland Cello Project. This all-cello ensemble blurs the lines of genre, playing everything from classical pieces to Kanye West covers. Head over to the east side on Thursday nights starting July 28. Music begins at 5 p.m.

Urban hikes Get to know Madison on a DIY walking tour. Explore 10 different historic Madison neighborhoods with guidebooks available from the city. First published as brochures that were available at Madison public libraries in the 1980s, these guides are now long out of print, but the city has made them available again as PDF downloads at cityofmadison.com/planning/ walktour.html. Despite their age, much of the information in the guides is still accurate. A walking tour is a fun way to spend an afternoon outdoors and you’re sure to see your neighborhood in a whole new way.

Farm in the city From learning about passive solar to cultural considerations in gardening, the Sol Levin Memorial Trail at Troy Gardens offers a surprisingly rich self-guided tour of Troy co-housing, the community gardens and adjacent lands, which include a restored prairie and an urban farm. (The trail is named after affordable housing advocate Sol Levin, who spearheaded the Troy Gardens project.) Trail guides are available at the kiosk on the left side of the driveway into the co-housing at 570 Troy Drive, or you can download or print it from the Community GroundWorks website. Taste a cherry or peach from their “edible landscape” area, surround yourself with fragrances in the herb garden, and listen to the songbirds that have returned in strong numbers thanks to the restoration of natural areas.

Riding around Lake Monona is a classic summer pastime, but riding with a group of friends is even better. Beginning Aug. 1, We Are All Mechanics, whose mission is to empower people through bicycle education, hosts “Mondays Around Monona.” These leisurely rides, which follow the city’s designated Lake Loop bike route, leave from the intersection of the Capital City Bike Path and Fair Oaks Avenue. You’ll learn something, too. Each week, there’ll be a featured theme, from chain maintenance to shifting techniques. F

India Viola (left) and Ali Dwyer of We Are All Mechanics will lead bike rides and host maintenance mini-lessons.

Madison with the presence of three lakes — Mendota, Monona and Wingra — smack in the middle of town, and two (Waubesa and Kegonsa) just down the Yahara River. You can paddle from the north end of Lake Mendota all the way to Stoughton. Why would anyone ever need to go to another lake? Leaving Madison on a summer weekend can feel like a betrayal: I’m cheating on you, Lake Monona. It’s not you, it’s me, Lake Mendota. However, there are many perfectly valid reasons to start seeing other lakes. Ù

Located about an hour and a half’s drive southeast of Madison, Lake Geneva is perhaps the least “Wisconsiny” of southern Wisconsin’s lakes. Its history as a summer resort for wealthy Chicagoans has left its imprint; in downtown Lake Geneva you’ll find more wine shops and upscale clothing boutiques than bait shops and corner taps. That’s exactly the attraction, of course. The 21-mile Lake Geneva Lake Shore Path circles the entire lake. It’s a narrow footpath (no bikes) from which you can see the “cottages” and estates. The public-access walkway began as a Potawatomi trail; now it gives gawkers a chance to get a closer look at our very own Newport. The path itself varies; some property owners have landscaped it in welcoming fashion; others let underbrush obscure it. Not everyone has a 21-mile stroll in them...but you’re in luck. The Lake Geneva Cruise Line accesses the other towns on the lake (Williams Bay and Fontana), enabling hikers to configure two-, seven- or 10-mile jaunts, then boat back to their start. Reservations are required; call 262-2486206 or see cruiselakegeneva.com. A detailed guide to the path is available from walktalkgawk.com. The Wisconsin Historical Society offers tours of one of the 19th-century lake homes: Black Point Estate. Access is via the Lake Geneva Cruise Line; the tour and boat trip lasts three hours. More info at blackpointestate.wisconsinhistory.org.

Young Lorine Niedecker enjoying the simple life on Blackhawk Island, at Lake Koshkonong.

Lake Koshkonong Lake Koshkonong, about a 45-minute drive southeast of Madison, may be best known as a fishing and boating spot. Muskies, pan fish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye and catfish are all here, according to the Wisconsin DNR. Before a dam was built at Indianford in 1850, the lake was a marsh where native wild rice and celery grew, attracting ducks in great numbers, which in turn attracted hunters, who built resorts and established hunting clubs. Large chunks of lake-adjacent land are still owned by hunt clubs. The lake’s two swimming beaches are both on the south shore; both belong to private campgrounds. However, the Lakeview Campground and Bar (1901 E. Hwy. 59) allows non-campers to use the beach as long as they buy some refreshments at the bar and grill. There’s also a Friday fish fry, naturally, with cod, bluegill or walleye. Swim or just hang out in an Adirondack chair. This is a great Wisconsin bar-and-fish-fry kind of lake. Norm’s Hideaway (8639 Kuehn Rd., Fort Atkinson) has a deck overlooking the lake and an extensive Friday

menu — cod, bluegill, walleye, catfish and shrimp. The Lake House Inn (1612 E. Hotel Drive, on the Edgerton side of the lake) is a historic Civil War-era farmhouse and classic supper club. Blackhawk Island, which is not an island but a peninsula created by marshland and the flow of the Rock River into Lake Koshkonong, is at first glance a collection of aging fishing cottages. It was also the home of Wisconsin poet Lorine Niedecker, who was born on the island and lived there off and on for much of her life. She recreated the sense of the swampy landscape and fishing culture of the area in such poems as “My Life by Water” and “Paean to Place.” Niedecker’s cottage and original cabin on the island (W7309 Blackhawk Island Rd.) and a historical marker can easily be seen from the road, but the property itself is privately owned and not open to tourists.

Devil’s Lake Devil’s Lake State Park — the state’s largest, at 9,217 acres — is a quick 45-minute drive north of Madison. It’s one of the few rock climbing and bouldering destinations in the state. And even non-rock climbers love to take to the Balanced

SKILLET CREEK MEDIA

Rock Trail, a half-mile scramble straight up the quartzite bluffs. Devil’s Lake is a great size to hike around, too. The one-mile, paved Tumbled Rocks Trail on the west shore is the easiest leg of the trip. On the east side of the lake, make the trek up the rocks to the top of the East Bluff, where the scenery overlooking the lake is spectacular. Words of advice: a counterclockwise hike means you’re climbing up the difficult Balanced Rock Trail; clockwise means you’ll be heading down it. Alternatives do exist: Grottos Trail is longer at

slightly under a mile, but provides a more gradual ascent or descent. And a completely flat circuit is possible by hiking along the train tracks on the east side of the lake. Swimming is popular at the lake, with sandy beaches at the north and south ends. The lake is quite clean and cool. Rentals of single and double kayaks, rowboats, canoes, paddleboards and paddle boats are available from the north beach concession. Group kayak tours and kayaking lessons are also offered throughout the summer; there’s also a special night paddle on July 19. The historic pavilion at the north beach was built for dances back in 1925. It will be put to good use this summer with classic Wisconsin fish fries every Friday night from June 10 to Sept. 2, and two big band dances per month on Saturday nights (June 11 and 18, July 9 and 23 and Aug. 13 and 27) with the accompaniment of the Hal Edwards Orchestra. In addition to a full slate of nature talks this summer, look out especially for the high-tech bat hike on June 29, “Finding Bigfoot” on July 14, and s’mores along with watching the Perseid meteor shower on Aug. 13. at the beach (rowboats, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, even pontoon boats); see mirrorlakeboatrentals.com. Three loops of bike-friendly trails don’t focus on the lake at all, but they are a beautiful place for kids to learn to bicycle off-road. There are no big hills, few rocky spots and only a couple of sandy patches.

Lake Delton Lake Delton has often been overshadowed by the surrounding vacationland of Wisconsin Dells. It’s possible to visit the Dells and not realize that Lake Delton is even there. It most recently made headlines back in June 2008, when heavy rains ultimately destroyed the dam, and the entire lake emptied into the Wisconsin River. While that event was devastating to surrounding businesses, it created a rare opportunity to completely restore, improve and refill the lake. If Mirror Lake is small and calm, Lake Delton is big and brassy. If silent sports are not your thing, this is the lake where you can rent a wave runner — though kayaks and SUP rentals are also available. Though the big resorts on Lake Delton are slowly swallowing up the old-time tourist cabins, not all the classic Dells attractions are gone. The Tommy Bartlett Show remains in residence on the southwestern shore of the lake with pro-level waterskiers — take in the human pyramid, ski ballet, skiless skiers barefooting, and dancing colored lights at the close of the evening performance. With so many baby-boomer Dells attractions now gone, this is one way to make the connection to the lake’s midcentury heyday: Sit back, relax, and spectate. F

Welcome to the S’more Museum. Do not touch the exhibits. Backpacks and large purses are not permitted. No flash photography, please. & The first known recipe for the s’more

appeared in the 1927 Girl Scout handbook, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, in which it was referred to as a “Some More.” “Toast two marshmallows over the coals to a crisp gooey state and then put them inside a graham cracker and chocolate bar sandwich,” read the instructions. The recipe ends, in direct contradiction to the treat’s name, with the phrase “one is really enough.”

THE

MUSEUM BY LINDA FALKENSTEIN

& The information that a woman named

Loretta Scott Crew invented the s’more is an internet hoax. Loretta Scott Crew has been deleted from the Wikipedia entry for the s’more.

& National S’mores Day is Aug. 10, sponsored by the National Confectioners Association.

& The s’more as we know it is made

possible by the mass production of marshmallows, which became possible around the turn of the 20th century. Graham crackers, which were more of a health food when invented in the 1800s, took on the more cookie-like form we know today in 1925 with the introduction of the Pacific Coast Biscuit Company’s “Honey Maid” variety. The ready availability of these portable, packable ingredients coincided with a national craze for outdoor activity, camping and hiking in the early 20th century.

The best of the summer concert lineups BY AARON R. CONKLIN Summer in Madison has always been a boom time for live music, but with new events and venues proliferating like dandelions — both here and across the state and region — it’s becoming ridiculous, in the best way possible. If you are independently wealthy, have unlimited free time and the ability to teleport, you could spend close to half the hours between June and September soaking in must-see live performances. But since most of us don’t enjoy such luxuries, feel free to use the following list to prioritize your jam time.

Swear and Shake SUNSET MUSIC SERIES JUNE 9

Shitty Barn Sessions Most Wednesdays (sometimes Tuesday, Thursday or Friday) through Oct. 5, Spring Green

Memorial Union Terrace Wednesdays through Saturdays, all summer Any fears that the reconstruction of the Terrace — the site of many a spectacular evening of summer music — would not be done in time for summer music were put to rest in mid-May when the venue, complete with a bigger stage and a better sound system, opened its colorful new patio. From Cajun to salsa to jazz, rock and blues, the Union’s extensive schedule has you covered. This summer’s headliners are grouped under the “Wisconsin Jams” banner. Among over three dozen announced acts, be sure to circle your calendars for Lili K (June 2) and Kyle Megna & the Monsoons (June 10).

High Noon Saloon Summer Patio Series Thursday evenings through Sept. 29, plus Monday, July 4 The High Noon is best in summer, on the patio, when sunset gilds the music and the sweet night air gently cools. The list of local artists set to own the outdoor stage includes a heavy dose of folk rock, with the Wells Division (June 2) and the Mascot Theory (July 17), roots rock with Pine Travelers (Aug. 11) and power pop from BingBong (July 21).

The Barn’s harmonious change in leadership was one of the biggest feel-good music stories of the spring, and summer is when audiences will really see the payoff. The sold-out Bully show (July 6) would be a can’t-miss in any venue; in the rough-and-tumble, intimate confines of the Barn, it’s going to be legendary. Several other shows on the docket are already sold out, too, but there’s still time to score tickets to acts like ME eN YOU (July 27), the Pines (Sept. 14-15) and, as the billing puts it, An Intimate Evening with Cribshitter (Aug. 17).

Sunset Music Series Many Thursdays from June 9 through Aug. 11, East Side Club Turns out live music sounds just as sweet from the other side of Lake Monona — maybe even sweeter, given that the beautiful downtown skyline is your view and not your backdrop. The six-date series kicks off with New York folksters Swear and Shake (June 9) and closes with Nashville-based Americana act Los Colognes (Aug. 11).

Live on King Street Various Friday evenings starting June 24, Majestic Theatre The Majestic Theatre’s free summer concert series always draws a monster crowd to the streets surrounding the Capitol. This year’s lineup features the return of Grateful Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra (June 24), plus indie rockers Lewis Del Mar (July 15) and Ra Ra Riot (July 29), Stevens Point bluegrass boys Horseshoes & Hand Grenades (Aug. 5) and party hardy cover band Rod Tuffcurls & the Bench Press (Aug. 12). Rounding out the season is the blues-punk of the Kills (Sept. 16).

Shake the Lake Saturday, June 25, John Nolen Drive (Broom Street to Blair Street) Year two of Madison’s fireworks-fueled festival in the shadow of Monona Terrace ups the musical ante and splits the demographics. Country fans get Jon Pardi, while the more altrocking among us get a double dose of Guster and Blitzen Trapper. Whichever option you end up choosing, it’s free, family-friendly and freaking awesome.

AUGUST 12-13

Pitchfork Music Festival Summerfest Wednesday, June 29, through Sunday, July 10 (closed July 4), Henry Maier Festival Park, Milwaukee Sure, it’s beer-soaked and more than a little hectic, but you won’t find a deeper and more diverse lineup of music to salt your summer than what’s playing at the Summerfest grounds. The Marcus Amphitheater is a little throwback-y this year, with gigs by Paul McCartney (July 8) and a double-bill featuring Sting and Peter Gabriel (July 10), but it’s leavened with the presence of Selena Gomez (June 29). The fest’s other stages feature everything from Garbage to the Decemberists, Jason Derulo, Willie Nelson, Passion Pit and “Weird Al” Yankovic.

Breese Stevens Field Fridays, July 1, Aug. 19, and Sept. 9, Breese Stevens Field Breese Stevens opened in 1926, was recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, and yet had never hosted a major concert before last October’s sold-out visit by the Avett Brothers. This year the venue is set to host not one but three major outdoor concerts. The Steve Miller Band keeps on a-rockin’ us back to the ’70s (July 1), with the blues harmonica of Charlie Musselwhite and the smooth jazz of local hero Leo Sidran in tow. Jeff Tweedy and Wilco will return to Madison with Kurt Vile & the Violators opening (Aug. 19). Cake finishes the season (Sept. 9) with support from Dr. Dog.

The Kissers

Friday, July 15, to Sunday, July 17, Union Park, Chicago An out-of-state road trip’s never out of the question, and Madison is only about a threehour drive from Pitchfork, one of the coolest and fastest-growing regional summer music festivals. On the schedule this year are 44 artists, topped by ex-Beach Boy Brian Wilson (performing Pet Sounds in its entirety) and also including Beach House, Sufjan Stevens, Broken Social Scene and even Carly Rae Jepsen. And unlike Chicago’s behemoth Lollapalooza, tickets for all three days are still available.

Central Park Sessions Various Thursdays from July 28 to Sept. 8, plus Friday, Aug. 12, Central Park The lineup for the Literacy Network-sponsored Central Park Sessions will transport Madison around the world over the course of this summer while raising money for nonprofits. This year’s itinerary includes Ireland, featuring Dervish and the Kissers (Aug. 11); Africa, featuring Mali’s Fatoumata Diawara (Aug. 12); and Central America, featuring Latin Grammy winners Monsieur Perine and the Palenke Soultribe (Aug. 18).

Jason Derulo SUMMERFEST JULY 5

Mile of Music Thursday, Aug. 4, to Sunday, Aug. 7, multiple venues, Appleton If there’s an Americana act that event organizers haven’t managed to pack into the streets of downtown Appleton for their annual four-day indie-artist event, we have no idea what it is. The hundreds of performers would stretch a lot further than a single mile, but feel free to try to see as many as you can. Madison faves Ida Jo, Seasaw and Teddy Davenport are among the assembled, as are bands from New York (Dreamers), Nashville (the Jag) and Australia (Julia Jacklin).

AN EXTENDED LIST OF MUSIC EVENTS STARTS ON P. 31

Eaux Claires Friday, Aug. 12, and Saturday, Aug. 13, Foster Farm near Eau Claire

This second iteration of Justin Vernon’s musical festival — an event that somehow manages to feel both like a laid-back visit to a friend’s cabin and Wisconsin’s own Woodstock — has a slightly less A-list feel to its lineup than last year. But that’s not going to change the chill vibe when thousands of people stand in silent amazement under the stars to hear Bon Iver play “Holocene.” A whopping 54 acts — that’s more than Pitchfork! — will play, including Erykah Badu, Beach House and Vince Staples. For the oldtimers who grooved on last year’s Indigo Girls set, this year Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers will perform The Way It Is in its entirety.

Summer theater takes on cross-dressers, stripteasers, chaos theory, singing knights, and more BY GWENDOLYN RICE The sunny season is finally drawing near, which means a whole host of summer shows will soon be gracing area stages. Traditionally a time for lighter fare, this summer there are plenty of good reasons — both comic and tragic — to abandon the backyard barbecue and head to a theater near you. These are some of the productions I’m particularly looking forward to. Find something that tickles your fancy or ignites your imagination, and go support great local theater all summer long!

Gypsy

June 17-18, Capitol Theater, Overture Center. capitalcitytheatre.org Mama Rose is back, and “everything’s comin’ up roses” for Capital City Theatre, as the company presents its second major production. The classic Broadway musical Gypsy features the ultimate ambitious stage mother, pushing her two daughters towards success in vaudeville at almost any cost. Based loosely on the 1957 memoir of famed striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, audiences will recognize songs including “Let Me Entertain You,” and “Some People.” Artistic director/musical director Andrew Abrams will lead a 25-piece orchestra, which will be seated at the back of the stage. In front of them, the full cast will perform with minimal sets and costumes. The show features Broadway performer Michele Ragusa as Mama Rose and Madison’s own Liz Griffith as Louise, with choreography from the Madison Ballet’s W. Earle Smith.

Monty Python’s Spamalot FOUR SEASONS THEATRE

Aug. 5-7, Wisconsin Union Theater, Madison. fourseasonstheatre.com Cue the coconut shells. The knights of Spamalot are cantering into Madison this summer with their own hilarious version of Arthurian events. Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot riffs on the legend of the Knights of the Round Table, who are now charged with finding the grail, fighting some ill-tempered Frenchmen, rescuing Prince Herbert and putting on a Broadway show. (They also eat ham and jam a lot.) Along the way they meet a bevy of beautiful show girls, the Lady of the Lake, killer rabbits and the Knights who say “Ni.” Winner of three Tony awards, Spamalot includes many new tunes, as well as “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” “Brave Sir Robin” and “Knights of the Round Table.”

A New Brain MUSIC THEATRE OF MADISON

July 8-9 and 14-16, Wisconsin Union Theater, Madison. mtmadison.com Specializing in bringing new and lesser-known musicals to Madison audiences, Music Theatre of Madison presents the truly unusual piece A New Brain this summer in the Play Circle at the UW Memorial Union. William Finn’s highly autobiographical tale focuses on a composer who is unhappily employed writing for a children’s TV show and dreaming of a Broadway career. When he collapses into a plate of ziti, it is revealed that he has a devastating brain disease. Knowing that his time may be running short, he fights for his life and the chance to write all the songs that are still inside him. Complemented with catchy tunes and a guy in a frog suit, A New Brain is an ultimately uplifting portrayal of a composer rediscovering his art.

Kinky Boots OVERTURE CENTER

July 12-17; overturecenter.com. As they say, don’t judge a man until you’ve walked a mile in his heels. The winner of six Tony Awards, Kinky Boots was a surprise Broadway hit when it opened in 2013, featuring songs by Grammy- and Tonywinning pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on the 2005 film and inspired by a true story, Kinky Boots follows Charlie Price, an aspiring young businessman who is forced to abandon his life in London and come home in order to save the family business in northern England. When Charlie inherits his father’s bankrupt shoe factory, he finds unexpected inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous drag performer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As happens in Broadway musicals, Lola helps Charlie turn the factory around while transcending prejudice and bridging cultures with high kicks and a lot of sass. There are also plenty of show-stopping numbers in this fluffy but fun story.

MAKE A DATE WITH THE DUCK

608-246-4277 MALLARDSBASEBALL.COM

Best of the Mallards promotions 2016 Heading to Warner Park to take in a Mallards game is always a wise decision. The joie de vivre starts at the front gate with a lineup of kid-friendly activities. Mascots Maynard Mallard and his significant other, Millie, greet spectators. Grownups can look for varied food and beer options and this year, the addition of Salvatore’s double-decker pizza bus. And are you going to leave the Duck Pond without swag in your hand? No, you are not. Here are our picks for the best of the promo nights. Check the full game schedule at northwoodsleague.com/madison-mallards/2016-complete-schedule.

JUNE 3: Fireworks and a free hot/cold pack kick off the season. JUNE 10: Chris Farley Bobblehead giveaway and Farley costume contest (in which fans will probably not “wear clothes that fit them”).

JUNE 11: Dane County Regional Airport balsa wood airplane giveaway and Michael Feldman and fireworks!

JUNE 29: It’s ’80s Night, including a tribute to Prince. And — sorry, Prince — it’s also Mullet Night. (If you really have a mullet, get $1 off a hot dog for every inch of, uh, tail.)

JUNE 30: “Balking Dead” Maynard Bobblehead. Why has this not happened sooner? JULY 7: “Summertime St. Patrick’s Day” with music from the Kissers. Plus, free Quench Gum. JULY 12: Lego giveaway. JULY 14: Pizza Bus Maynard Bobblehead giveaway. JULY 27: Pooch in the park night — dogs welcome! And free doggy chip clips. Hey, dogs don’t want you to clip your chips shut.
