U Ngwe Gaing’s paintings were noted for the meticulous attention to detail, but he was also a prolific and versatile painter working in both oil and water-colour. He excelled in his choice of “poster subjects and settings” according to U Min Naing another noteworthy name in the world of art. (Hla, 2010) This peice by Gaing portrays a women dancing. She has a large flowing skirt and has flowers in her hair. STREET SCENE, SINGAPORE TRENGGANU ST , 1951 BY LIU KANG

Liu Kang is a Singaporean artist, founder of the Singapore Art Society. He is known as the creator of the Nanyang style (Chinese: pinyin Nányáng, “South Seas”), in which scenes of tropical life were depicted with bright and wide strokes. The color pallette of these paintings inspired the color and pattern pallette of the Giorgio Armani SS23 Collection. Thus making it a perfect representaion of the collection.

The sculpture is a callback to the area’s history as an orchard and plantation, where nutmeg was one of the key crops that helped catapult Singapore’s economy (Seah, 2018). The sculpure is located infront of the Giorgio Armani store in Singapore which sparked my interest in wanting to create a collection based off the deeply rooted cultural refrence, the nutmeg. 8
