Textiles may incorporate nature and technology in various ways in the future. One approach is to adopt a multi-species perspective and consider the needs of all living beings in design, as well as utilize protopias, which are practical visions for incremental progress, to develop solutions to complex problems. The virtual world, or metaverse, may also expand beyond its current focus on socializing and shopping to offer educational, wellness, creative, and aweinspiring experiences, leading to new ideas about sustainability, equity, and inclusivity. These immersive qualities of both nature and technology may also inspire new aesthetics, such as dreamy digital worlds, twilight colors, bioluminescent ocean life, and Mars-like landscapes, that can be incorporated into textiles.
