90’S BABY! by reshma muralitharan
“There is no future without a past’’ - Siri Hustvedt, The Summer without Men Fashion has always taken huge strides forward, always putting out its most innovative foot forward, we’re always looking towards the future, looking for the next best thing. But what if the next best thing wasn’t in the future, but in the past? Looking back, the 90’s boasted a hodgepodge of fun and quirky styles reminiscent of the time. Young trendsetters have taken it upon themselves to revive the fashion of the 90’s with their own take on the classics we’ve all come to know and love. The youth have brought the 90’s back in order to relive the heyday of bubblegum pop culture and revel in their newly found teen spirit. So what created this movement? One word: nostalgia. Teens these days lust over the sentimentality of a past they barely remember, or were a part of. It is their defiance of society’s nature to continually thrust itself into the future. This generation essentially stands on the border of what was old and what is new, bridging the gap between the two. But this is more than wearing those god-awful mom jeans or wearing a choker when you feel remotely edgy. This is about cultural identity and evolution. Creating a whole culture within itself by mixing the old-school with modern influences to create something totally new and unique. This is about young black youths bringing back The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, this is about Instagram hipsters bringing back The Breakfast Club’s Brian Johnson, or young girls channeling the golden era of pop music with their platform sneakers and sparkly minidresses. This is about using our past to create something new for the future. But could this really be described as nostalgia, or just another glamorization of a not-so-special era? For now, does it really matter? Not really. Because are we gonna stop raving over this movement? As if!
