It is the sixth largest exiting amphitheatre in the world and is known as The Arena. It has an elliptic shape and measures 132.5 m along its longer axis, and 106 m along its shorter axis. Archaeological findings in Pula Archäologische Fundstätten in Pula All regular works in Istria including power and water trenching, the construction of sewage system or new facilities become a real exploratory adventure. Pula is an ideal example of the neverending source of archaeological findings which have been preserved in their original form deep under the surface of the ground, passed every day by its citizens and visitors. During works conducted on the Karolina

Karolina in Pula, in the vicinity of the Amphitheater, an ancient pavement behind the Nimfej well, an ancient water supply facility, was discovered. Archaeologists examined the pavement, cleaned 12-17 cm thick stone plates and measured its maximum 4.4 m length and 1.6 m width. It was found that the plates used for building the pavement were between 12-17 centimeters thick and located at the depth of 1.6 meters. During works conducted on the passage from the Forum Square to Kandlerova Street on the east side of the Kapitolinski Square, a partially preserved pavement was found at the depth of about 80 cm. Ancient citizens of Pula walked across large, square stone plates (70x50 cm). Numerous findings confirm this excavation to be an ancient pavement found as well during the renewal of the pavement across the entire Forum a few years ago. All the

findings are protected by law. According to detailed achaeological documentation, they are also protected and isolated under the heritage protection rules.

Alle regulären Arbeiten in Istrien, wie Kanalausgrabungen für Stromund Wasserversorgung, Kanalisation oder Neubauten werden zu einem Forschungsabenteuer. Pula ist ein ideales Beispiel für die unversiegbare Quelle von archäologischen Funden, die sich allesamt in ihrem ursprünglichen Aussehen tief unter der Erdoberfläche befinden, auf der zu jeder Tageszeit ihre Einwohner und Besucher wandeln. So wurde während der Arbeiten an der Karolina in Pula unterhalb des Amphitheaters ein antikes Trottoir hinter der Quelle Nimfej gefunden, dem antiken Bauwerk, das zur Wasserversorgung diente. Die Archäologen haben das Trottoir untersucht, die 12 - 17 cm dicken Steinplatten gesäubert, und seine maximale Länge von 4,4 m und Breite von 1,6 m ausgemessen. Die Forschungen haben ergeben, dass die Platten von 12 - 17 cm dick sind, und sich auf einer Tiefe von 1,6 m befinden. Während der Arbeiten beim Übergang vom Platz Forum in die Kandlerova Strasse an der Ostseite des Platzes Kapitolinski fand man einen teilweise erhaltenen Bürgersteig auf einer Tiefe von etwa 80 cm. Über die großen Quadratsteinplatten mit den Dimensionen von 70 x 50 cm schritten einst die alten Einwohner Pulas. Viele Nachforschungen haben gezeigt, dass diese Ausgrabung ein antiker Bürgersteig war, ähnlich dem, den man bei der Restauration des Trottoirs auf dem ganzen Forum vor einigen Jahren gefunden hatte. Alle Fundstätten stehen unter gesetzlichem Schutz, und nach der detaillierten archäologischen Dokumentation sind sie geschützt und isoliert, gemäß der Regeln über den historischen Denkmalschutz.

Betiga (Vodnjan-Dignano) lies one kilometre to the northeast of the Barbariga village, near Peroj. There are few unexplored prehistoric hillocks in its surroundings. The remains of several Roman country villas, which were being erected between the 1st and 5th centuries, speak of a densely inhabited area from the antiquity until the early Medieval Age. The remains of the church of St. Agnes stand as proof of early Christian architecture. Notably, the foundation of the early Christian basilica of St. Andrew is the most interesting archaeological location, one kilometre west of the village. The complex has been fully studied, charting its nucleus in a trefoil chapel from the beginning of the 5th century with an almost completely preserved multicolour floor mosaic. The chapel was turned into a three-nave basilica shrine in the first half of the 5th century. In the middle nave, there remains part of the original floor mosaic. In the second half of the 5th century, a monastery was built close to the church, and a baptistery was added two centuries later. The complex was finalised in the 8th century, when a sepulchral chapel was built. Nevertheless, it was abandoned in the 13th century. Betiga ist die Siedlung, die

In der Umgebung gibt es einige noch nicht erforschte prähistorische Hügelgräber, und der Ort war von der Antike bis zum frühen Mittelalter dicht besiedelt, worüber die Überreste von einigen römischen Landvillen zeugen, die vom 1. bis zum 5. Jahrhundert erbaut wurden. In der Ortschaft befinden sich auch Überreste der frühchristlichen Kirche der Hl. Agnes, aber am interessantesten sind die archäologischen Umrisse des Klosters St. Andreas, einen Kilometer westlich von der Siedlung entfernt. Der Komplex ist vollkommen erforscht, und seinen Mittelpunkt bildet eine dreiblättrige Kapelle vom Anfang des 5. Jahrhunderts, wo das mehrfarbige Bodenmosaik erhalten geblieben ist. Die Kapelle wurde in der ersten Hälfte des gleichen Jahrhunderts zum Altarraum umgestaltet, der in eine dreischiffige Basilika eingebaut war, und in dessen zentralem Schiff ein Teil des gleichen Mosaiks erhalten geblieben ist. In der zweiten Hälfte des 5. Jahrhunderts wurde neben der Kirche das Kloster angebaut, zwei Jahrhunderte später ein Baptisterium, und im 8. Jahrhundert die Grabkapelle. Der Komplex wurde im 13. Jahrhundert verlassen. 7

Kamenjak Area rich in history Gebiet reicher Vergangenheit Kamenjak is an area rich in history. It was inhabited as early as in prehistoric times, which is evidenced by the ruins of fortified villages of Volam and Gradina north of Premantura, as well as Kastril and Debeljak on the south. Gradina Cave is the southernmost cave in Istria! It is located in the forest at Gradina about 200 meters from Premantura. The archaeological research conducted and artifacts found show that people from the prehistoric times until the Middle Ages used the cave, visited it and even lived and died in it. There is mention of runaway slaves and robbers, or even isolated incurable patients, presumably lepers. However, the questions about the inhabitants of the cave have not been answered yet. But, it is known that a unique and a very valuable prehistoric iron cross axe, originating from the territory of Greece - which were made from the end of the 10th century BC to the 7th century BC - is the first and only finding of this type of tool or weapon in Istria. The Greek axe found in Gradina Cave shows that as early as three thousand years ago there were sea routes, connections and trade between the Premantura peninsula and the distant Aegean area. We should point out the unexplored archaeological site of Kastril, of which today there are remains of large walls. The research conducted so far suggests the possibility of late antique or Byzantine fort existing in the area. According to the previously established data, Kastril represents the only example of a castrum, a type of military fortification along the eastern coast of the 8

Adriatic built in the sixth century, during the reign of Justinian. At the time, for navigation safety reasons, military forts were built at all important and salient points of the coast and islands and each fort is in the range of vision of another. Numerous findings are evidence of a relatively dense population of the Kamenjak Peninsula in ancient times. The remains of buildings, tanks and money of Emperor Augustus were found in the Močile Bay. The ancient past in the Polje Bay can be traced in the remains of a rural complex, as well as of walls, a part of a pillar and fragments of pottery. The remains of rural architecture can be found in the Škokovica Bay. Between Late Antiquity and Late Middle Ages, at the time the settlement of Premantura came into existence, Kamenjak was not continuously inhabited. At the hydro-archaeological sites in the waters around the peninsula, there are the remains of two sailing ships from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as other ships. Kamenjak ist ein Gebiet reicher Vergangenheit. Er war bereits in der Prähistorie besiedelt, wovon die Burgruinen Volam und Gradina, nördlich von Premantura, sowie Kastril und Debeljak südlich, zeugen. Die Grotte auf Gradina ist die südlichste

Grotte Istriens. Sie befindet sich im Wald auf Gradina ungefähr 200 Meter von Premantura entfernt. Archäologische Untersuchungen und gefundene Artefakte zeugen davon, dass Menschen die Grotte von der Steinzeit bis zum Mittelalter genutzt, besucht, sogar in ihr gelebt haben und gestorben sind. Es werden entflohene Sklaven und Räuber genannt, sogar isolierten unheilbar Kranken, voraussichtlich Leprakranken. Aber auf die Fragen nach den Bewohnern der Grotte werden Antworten immer noch gesucht. Verlässlich weiß man aber, dass der einzigartige und sehr wertvolle Fund der prähistorischen eisernen Kreuzaxt, die vom Gebiet Griechenlands stammt - wo sie vom X. Jh. v. Chr. bis VII. Jh. v. Chr. hergestellt wurden - der erste und einzige Fund diesen Typs von Werkzeug oder Waffen in Istrien ist. Die griechische Axt aus der Grotte auf

Gradina zeugt davon, dass bereits vor ungefähr dreitausend Jahren Seerouten, Verbindungen und Handel zwischen der Halbinsel Premantura und dem entfernten ägäischem Gebiet existierten. Wir können auch die unerforschte archäologische Lokalität Kastril hervorheben, wovon heute die Überreste breiter Mauern zeugen. Bisherige Untersuchungen weisen auf die Möglichkeit einer späten antiken oder byzantinischen Festung auf diesem Gebiet hin. Nach den bisher festgestellten Daten stellt Kastril das einzige Beispiel eines Castrums, ein Typ militärischer Festung entlang der östlichen Adriaküste, die im VI. Jh. zur Zeit der Herrschaft von Justinian entstanden ist, dar. Damals wurden zur Sicherheit der Seefahrt an allen wichtigen und hervorstehenden Punkten an der Küste und auf den Inseln Militärfestungen erbaut, so dass sie sich gegenseitig sehen konnten. Zahlreiche Funde sind Zeugen einer relativ dichten Besiedelung der Halbinsel Kamenjak in der Antike. In der Bucht Močile wurden Überreste eines Gebäudes, Zisterne und Münzen des Keisers Augustus gefunden. Die Bucht Polje zeugt von der antiken Vergangenheit mit Ruinen eines ländlichen Komplexes, wo Spuren von Mauern, Teile einer Säule und Keramikbruchstücke gefunden wurden. Die Bucht Škokovica beherbergt Überreste ländlicher Architektur. Zwischen der Spätantike und dem späten Mittelalter, als die Siedlung Premantura entstand, war Kamenjak nicht durchgehend besiedelt. Im Gewässern um die Halbinsel befinden sich an hydroarchäologischen Lokalitäten Wrackteile von zwei Segelschiffen aus dem XVII. und XVIII. Jh., sowie anderer Schiffe.

Brijuni Islands There are surprisingly wellpreserved defensive walls erected by the Bronze-Age Illyrian tribe Histri situated atop the hill in the middle of Veli and Mali Brijun. They were built of rough stone blocks in concentric circles using the ‘dry wall’ technique. Multiple angular doors were built to access the settlement, comparable to a labyrinth.

Sie wurden in konzentrischen Kreisen aus großen, unbehandelten Steinblöcken in Trockenmauertechnik gebaut. Durch die Mauern führte ein mehrfaches Tor, das wie bei einem Labyrinth im Winkel angelegt war.

Female deities in Istria Minerva Flanatica and Minerva Polensis Minerva was one of the Roman goddesses worshipped in Istria. This fact becomes interesting in light of adjectives Flanatica and Polensis added to the name of this goddess. However, all facts considered, this is an indigenous cult i.e. a goddess who was identified with Minerva due to her similarity upon Roman arrival. Despite it being identified with the Greek Athens following the Punic wars, Minerva was primarily an Italic goddess. Although her name was derived from the old Latin Menerva, she was also called Menrva, Meneruva, Menarea or even Merva and Mera. As an old Roman deity, Minerva was exclusively the patron of craftsmen, she was considered the inventor of brass instruments including the trumpet and the flute as well as the protector of all musicians. Later on, she became the sponsor of weavers and knitters. Under the Greek influence, she was given the features of a military and political goddes due to the influence of Athens. Apart from being the patron of doctors, she was also worshipped as the goddess of

archaeology happiness and wisdom, considered by some the goddess of memory or remembrance. Minerva Flanatica was worshipped on the public land of Poreč; a monument erected in her honour was found in Musalež near the town of Poreč. The wording was written down on the limestone broken in two halves. The wording is lined with a narrow relief decoration, the square plate is slightly dented carrying the following caption: [M]INERVAE / [FL]ANATICAE / [SA] CRVM / ... Despite having been found at different periods of time, the similarity between the two halves was recognized almost immediately. They were put together and stored at the Heritage Museum of Poreč and Its Surrounding Area. Minerva Flanatica is an indigenous deity identified with Roman Minerva during the Roman rule in Istria. The added Flanatica to the name of the goddess characterizes affiliation. It seems this goddess was worshipped by the Flanonas, citizens of the old Flanona, known today as the town of Plomin. As the monument to Minerva erected by the Flanonas was found in the vicinity of Poreč, we can conclude this cult was transported from the east to the west coast of Istria. The second example, similar to the first one, was found in Pula where the open memorial stone dedicated to Minerva Polensis or Polatica was found split in the two parts and damaged on sev-

eral places. Apart from finding a caption next to it, there is little more we know about this monument. It is believed that Minerva was first worshipped in Pula only among the lowest levels of the society, to be then embraced by all the levels of population in Pula and became the leading urban cult. She is considered to be the patron of craftsmen or, to be more precise, to be connected with manufacturing wool products as the cult of Minerva was also worshipped in Trieste and Aquileia primarily by slaves working in the textile industry. According to sources, the importance of the Minerva cult is seen in the insula Minervae caption found on one of the monuments witnessing that a part of the town or even an island in the Pula harbour was named after the goddess. However, this is not the only finding proving the popularity of this cult in Pula. Other captions telling about numerous slaves serving Minerva were also found. Her temple must have existed as well. Was insula really a part of the town housing the temple of Minerva or was it only an island? Let’s hope some future excavations will tell us....

Weibliche Gottheiten in Istrien Minerva Flanatika und Minerva Polensis In Istrien verehrte man, neben anderen römischen Göttinnen, auch Minerva. Dies würde jedoch keine weitere Aufmerksamkeit erregen, wenn man dem Namen nicht noch die Eigenschaftswörter Flanatika und Polensis hinzugefügt hätte. Allem Anschein nach handelt es sich hier um einen autochthonen Kult bzw. um die Göttin, die nach der Ankunft der Römer wegen ihrer Ähnlichkeit mit Minerva gleichgesetzt wurde. Minerva, nach den Punischen Kriegen der griechischen Athene gleichgesetzt, war eine italische Göttin. Der Name stammt vom alten lateinischen Namen Menerva ab, aber sie trug mehrere Namen wie Menrva, Meneruva, Menarea oder Merva und Mera. Als eine altrömische Gottheit war Minerva ausschließlich die Schutzherrin der Handwerker, und galt als die Erfinderin von Blasinstrumenten wie Trompete und Flöte; demzufolge war sie auch die Schutzpatronin aller Musiker. Später beschützte sie Weber und Stricker. Unter dem Einfluss der Griechen übernahm sie die Charakteristiken einer Politik- und Kriegsgöttin durch die Bedeutung Athenes, beschützte ferner die Ärzte, und wurde als Göttin des Glücks und der Weisheit, des Gedächtnisses und der Erinnerung verehrt. Minerva Flanatica wurde auf dem Gebiet des römischen Staatsbesitzes (ager) von Poreč verehrt. Ein Denkmal zu ihren Ehren wurde in der Ortschaft Musalež bei Poreč gefunden. Der Text steht

auf einem Kalkstein, der in zwei Teile zerbrochen ist. Er ist mit einer schmalen Reliefdekoration umrahmt, die quadratische Platte ist leicht vertieft und die Inschrift lautet: [M]INERVAE / [FL]ANATICAE / [SA]CRVM /... Obwohl die beiden Teile nicht gleichzeitig gefunden wurden, konnte man ihre Zusammengehörigkeit bald erkennen, so dass sie sich nun als Gesamtheit im Heimatmuseum der Poreština befinden. Minerva Flanatica ist eine autochthone Gottheit, die man in der Zeit der römischen Herrschaft in Istrien mit der römischen Minerva gleichgesetzt hatte. Der Zusatz Flanatica beim Namen der Göttin bezeichnet die Zugehörigkeit, so dass man annimmt, sie sie von den Flanatikern verehrt worden, den Einwohnern des antiken Flanona, heute Plomin. Die Tatsache, dass das Denkmal der Minerva Flanatica in der Umgebung von Poreč gefunden wurde, beweist uns heute, dass dieser Kult von der östlichen zur westlichen Küste Istriens seinen Weg fand. Ein zweites Beispiel, das diesem ersten recht ähnlich ist, wurde in Pula gefunden, wo man ein Grabdenkmal entdeckte, das Minerva Polensis oder Polatica gewidmet war, zerbrochen in den oberen und unteren Teil, und teilweise beschädigt. Daneben fand man noch eine Inschrift, aber darüber wissen wir nichts weiter. Man nimmt an, dass ganz am Anfang die Göttin Minerva in Pula nur in den niedrigeren Bevölkerungsschichten verehrt wurde, und erst später bei den Einwohnern in Pula populär, und zum führen-

den Kult der Stadt aufgestiegen war. Sie war die Schutzpatronin der Handwerker, genauer noch, der Hersteller von Wollwaren, und das wird durch die Tatsache bewiesen, dass in Triest und Aquileia auch ein Kult der Minerva existierte, die vor allem von Sklaven verehrt wurde, die in der Textilherstellung arbeiteten. Es scheint, dass der Kult der Minerva in Pula besonders wichtig war, weil - den Quellen nach zu urteilen - in Pula ein Stadtteil, oder vielleicht sogar eine Insel im Hafen von Pula nach ihr benannt waren, wovon die Inschrift insula Minervae zeugt, die auf einem der Denkmäler gefunden wurde. Doch das ist nicht der einzige Fund, der uns von der Beliebtheit des Kult in Pula berichtet; man fand auch Inschriften, die viele Sklaven nennen, die in Minervas Diensten standen, und offenbar existierte auch ein Tempel, der dieser Göttin geweiht war. Es stellt sich nur die Frage, ob „insula“ tatsächlich ein Stadtviertel war, wo sich Minervas Tempel befand, oder ob es sich um ein Inselchen handelte; das werden wir hoffentlich durch weitere, zukünftige Ausgrabungen feststellen können…. 11

In the central ceremonial hall on the bishopric’s first floor a tribelon has been preserved with decorative marble columns bearing capitals and symbolic marble and stucco relieves. In the ground floor is a lapidary with a mosaic from the floor of the oldest church presenting a fish, symbol of Christ. At the end of the 18th century the bishopric got a new wing serving as home of church art. The remains of the oldest churches are best viewed from belvedere on the northern section of town fortification walls. In the apse of the smaller basilica PreEufrasiana there are archeological findings and wall paintings illustrating the transformations this space was subjected to from 5th to 13th century (in the 8th century the sarcophagus with arcosolium was placed in, from 9th to 10th century three semicircular inscribed apses were built, at the end of the 14th century it was turned into a sacristy with wall paintings). Floor mosaics dating from 4th to 6th century have been preserved in front and inside the memorial chapel (cella trichora); a sarcophagus-reliquary of saints Maurus and Eleuterius from 1247 was placed inside. zentralen Zeremoniensaal des Bischofsgebäudes, im ersten Stock, befindet sich ein festliches Tribelon, das mit Marmorsäulen und Kapitellen, symbolischen Reliefs in Marmor und Stuck verziert wurde. Im Erdgeschoss wurde ein Lapidarium eingerichtet, wo auch ein originelles Stück des Bodenmosaiks mit dem Fisch als Christussymbol aufbewahrt wird, das aus dem Boden der ältesten Kirche stammt. Zum Bischofspalast wurde Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts ein zusätzlicher Gebäudeflügel angebaut, der als Bischofswohnung diente; darin befindet sich heute eine Sammlung liturgischer Gegenstände. Die Überreste der ältesten Kirchen sind vom nördlichen Stadtmauer gut sehbar. In der Apsis der kleineren Vor-Euphrasius-Basilika werden archäologische Funde und Wandmalereien vorgestellt, welche die Transformation des Gebäudes in der Zeit vom 5. bis 13. Jahrhunderts illustrieren.

Im 8. Jahrhundert befand sich in diesem Raum ein Sarkophag mit Arkosolium und während des 9. und 10. Jahrhunderts wurden drei halbkreisförmige, eingebaute Apsiden ausgeführt und am Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts zu einer Sakristei mit Wandbemalungen umgebaut. Die Bodenmosaike aus der Zeit vom 4. bis 6. Jahrhundert befinden sich vor und in der Gedächtniskapelle (Cella Trichora); hier ist auch ein Sarkophag untergebracht - das Reliquien der Heiligen Maurus und Eleuterius aus dem Jahr 1247. beinhalten.

Sacral collection of the Fažana parish Sammlung sakraler Kunst der Pfarre von Fažana The life of the Middle Ages of Fažana and its surroundings logically continued on the tradition of the Classical and late Classical periods. Not much is known about this period, especially its very beginning, but it is clearly evident that Christianity was deeply rooted in the early Middle Ages, which is proved by numerous remains of sacral architecture. During the rule of St. Mark’s Republic (1331 - 1797) Fažana was one of the most important centers of the Pula area. In 1741 when Pula had a population of about 700, Fažana had 503 inhabitants. At the time Fažana got its representative profane structures, whereas its dedication to religious life is revealed in the reconstruction and expansion of the greater part of sacral structures. The Parish of SS.Cosmas and Damian is situated on the western coast of south Istria, including the towns of Fažana, Valbandon, Peroj and the Brijuni Islands. It is difficult to determine its formal date of origin, territory it encompassed and initial organizational status. However, considering the intensive additional construction and expansion of religious structures, especially the church complex of SS. Cosmas and Damian, it may be assumed that the Parish was established in the 10th or 11th century, precisely in 1028 when it came into possession of the 14

It was first mentioned in historical records as a Parish in 1150, during the clashes between Venice and Istrian towns, and mentioned in peace settlements and treaties as one of the parishes on the territory of Pula. Vor dem Hintergrund der Antike und Spätantike entwickelte sich das mittelalterliche Leben von Fažana und Umgebung. Über diese Zeit, besonders über die früheste, weiß man nicht viel. Während der Herrschaft der Republik des Heiligen Markus (1331 - 1779) war Fažana einer der lebendigsten Orte im Raum von Pula. Compared to the main medieval town gate situated on the eastern part of Vrsar, this gate is smaller, therefore it is called the small town gate. The gate was built in the second half of the 13th century, when the Romanesque style was prevailing in Istrian towns. The gate frame consisting of thirteen stone blocks was carved out very precisely. In the past the gate used to be part of the town walls. Two gate wings made of hard Istrian oak have been preserved till the present days. Especially interesting are the stone rings that hold the wings. The gate is provided with a closing mechanism. Above it there is a fragment of the town walls and a stone tile with shallow relief representing St. Mark’s lion. As to its artistic characteristics, the lion resembles the one above the east gate and is probably made by the same artist. This lion also holds a closed book in his paws, has raised wings and lowered tail. The relief was made between the 14th and 16th century. Most likely it was brought from somewhere else and put above the gate about 1778 when the Venetian Republic became the ruler of Vrsar. There are two iron bawls built in the wall just by the gate. Those prob-

ably originate from the English ships which cannoned Istrian towns at the beginning of the 19th century, at that time under occupation of Napoleon’s soldiers. Im Vergleich mit dem Hauptstadttor aus dem Mittelalter auf der Ostseite Vrsar ist dieses Tor kleiner und wird das kleine Stadttor genannt. Das Tor wurde in der zweiten Hälfte des 12. oder Anfang des 13. Jh. gebaut, damals wurde in istrischen Städtchen im romanischen Stil gebaut und gemeißelt. Das Tor ist aus dreizehn Steinblöcken ziemlich präzise gemeißelt. Das Tor war ein Teil der Stadtmauern. Bis heute ist der Torflügel aus hartem istrischen Eichenholz erhalten geblieben. Interessant sind auch die steinernen Ringe, die zur Befestigung der Torflügel dienten. Die Torflügel haben auch eine Schlissvorrichtung. Über dem Tor ist ein Fragment der Stadtmauer und eine Platte mit flachem Relief des Löwen vom Hl. Markus angebracht. Künstlerisch ähnelt der Löwe dem am Osttor der Stadt und stammt wahrscheinlich von demselben Künstler. Wie der Löwe am Osttor hat auch dieser in den Pfoten ein geschlossenes Buch, ausgebreitete Flügel und angezogenen Schwanz. Der Löwe entstand in der Zeit zwischen dem 14. und dem 16. Jh. wahrscheinlich wurde er nach Vrsar gebracht und im Jahre 1778 über dem Tor angebracht, als die Republik Venedig über Vrsar herrschte. Neben dem Tor sind zwei Kanonenkugeln eingemauert, die wahrscheinlich von den englischen Schiffen stammen, die am Anfang des 19. Jh. die Städtchen Istriens, die damals unter der Herrschaft Napoleons waren, bombardierten.

This medieval fortified town is perched high above the Kvarner Gulf, on the eastern coast of Istria. It proudly stands overlooking the Raša River, historical boundary between the Illyrian tribes of Histri and Liburnians, and afterwards the Roman provinces of Histria and Dalmatia. In Roman times the settlement of Alvona had the status of a municipium. In 804 representatives of medieval Labin participated in the Assembly of Rižana where they presented their complaints to the Frankish authorities, which included the protest against the settling of Slavs and abuse of the Frankish ruler of Istria, Duke John. At that time the Church of St. Justus was built on the highest point of the town, today only visible in ruins. Labin flourished at the time when it was governed by a gastald, representative of the Patriarch of Acquileia (1207 - 1420), from the castle on the very hilltop. The walls that surround it were built in 1300 and re-fortified in the 15th and 16th cc. when the town spreads downhill towards the parish church with square. Their construction was completed with the gate of St. Flora in 1587 with the relief of St. Mark and round bastion, as well as sliding gate towards the square outside the walls. Hoch über der Kvarner Bucht erhebt sich an der Ostküste diese mittelalterliche befestigte Stadt. Unterhalb der Stadt fließt der Fluss Raša, die historische Grenze zwischen den illyrischen Stämmen der Histrier und der Liburner, wie auch der späteren römischen Provinzen Histrien und Dalmatien. Boljun Castle Kastell von Boljun Massive defensive walls and towers of the castle that was mentioned for the first time in the 11th c. logically fit into the historical story of the castle that was impossible to conquer. One of the reasons is surely the constant renovation of walls until the 17th c. In the 13th c. a semi-urban settlement developed on the northwestern side of the castle, whose present-day appearance was defined until the 19th c. The medieval town walls are not preserved, although the southern or Large Gate (Vela vrata) remained until the 19th c. The main street stretches along the ridge of the hill, and the main square preserved buildings characteristic of a medieval town commune. Boljun is famous for its Glagolitic monumental heritage: its past was inscribed in stone and entered in registers, confraternity books and documents from the 16th/17th c., of which the Boljun Chronicle (Boljunska kronika) is especially important. In the town stands the Parish Church of St. George the Martyr from the 17th c., Church of SS. Cosmas and Damian with fragments of mural paintings, which are also found in the dilapidated St. Peter’s Church from the 14th c. and the Church of SS. Der Hauptplatz bewahrte das für mittelalterliche Städte kennzeichnende Aussehen. Boljun ist für ein glagolithisches Denkmalerbe bekannt: für Aufzeichnungen in Stein und Handschriften der Matrikelverzeichnisse, für Handschriften der Ordensbücher und Dokumente aus dem 16./17. Jahrhundert. Darunter ist die Chronik von Boljun besonders hervorzuheben. Im Ort steht die Pfarrkirche des Heiligen Georg des Märtyrers aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, die Kirche der Heiligen Cusma und Damian mit Freskenresten, von denen auch einige in der baufälligen Kirche des Heiligen Petrus aus dem 14. Jahrhundert zu sehen sind. Unterhalb der Siedlung steht die Kirche der Heiligen Fabian und Sebastian aus dem 12. Jahrhundert.

Funtana was first mentioned in 1331 as Fontana Georgiana, but it is obvious that the village existed even earlier, which can be documented ever since the Roman period; moreover, this period brought to Funtana and its surroundings prosperity and development. The Roman villa situated in Zelena laguna had a particular aqueduct connecting it to the water sources, after which the village got its name.

Pod Fumiju Gračišće The Church of St. Euphemia acquired its present-day form in 1864 following thorough reconstruction of the church that was built in 1383 at this site. Perhaps the large wooden crucifix that today occupies the central position in the apse above the altar once belonged there. For some time it stood on the northern wall of the Bishop’s chapel of St. Anthony in the town center and was brought here in a magnificent procession in 1938. This exceptionally valuable crucifix dating from the 13th century is one of the highlights of St. Euphemia, which over the past years has become a specific museum of Gračišće’s sacral art. During one of his visits to Istria, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who in summer frequently toured Istria incognito by car, noticed this crucifix in a poor state and ensured enough money for its restoration. Below it is the altar with wooden statues of St. Blaise, St. Lucy and St. Euphemia. St. Blaise, whose statue stands on the tabernacle protects against affections of the throat and is the patron saint of children’s diseases. St. Lucy is the patron saint of eyesight and is popularly invoked against disease of the eyes. St Euphemia was a martyr at Constantinople, whose body was washed ashore in a stone sarcophagus in Rovinj around the year 800. Today it is kept in the magnificent Church of St. Euphemia in Rovinj, built in her honor. We do not know if these saints also stood in the earlier Church of St. Euphemia, but surely many people came to pray here hoping for miraculous cures. 18

Gračišće

Die Kirche der Hl. Euphemia erhielt ihr heutiges Aussehen 1864, durch eine grundlegende Renovierung der im Jahre 1383 an dieser Stelle errichteten Kirche. Vielleicht gehörte das große Kruzifix aus Holz, das sich heute im Mittelpunkt in der Apsis oberhalb des Altars befindet und einige Zeit an der Nordwand der Bischofskapelle hl. Antonius in der Stadtmitte hing, gerade ihr, denn es wurde in einer prunkvollen Prozession 1938 hierher gebracht. Dieses außergewöhnlich wertvolle Stück, entstand im 13. Jh. und ist eines der interessantesten Exponate der Hl. Euphemia, die in den letzten Jahren zu einem repräsentativen Museum sakraler Kunstgegenstände von Gračišće wurde. Der Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand, der im Sommer häufig inkognito mit dem Auto Istrien bereiste, wurde auf einer solchen Reise durch Istrien auf dieses Kruzifix aufmerksam, das sich in einem elenden Zustand befand, woraufhin er Geld für seine Restaurierung zur Verfügung stellte. This explains why the street leading from the Church of St. Euphemia is referred to by locals as Pod Fumiju. It stretches all the way from the Church of St. Euphemia to the round tower, site of the onetime southern gate of Gračišće. This street is characterized by single-storey houses leaning against each other, with the residential area on the first floor and the working area on the ground floor. While walking along

this street be sure to observe the lintels on the ground floor. Many of them have the dates of construction inscribed, dating back as far as the 15th century. One of them, next to the inscribed year 1452 carries a hammer as the symbol, or using present-day terminology, logotype of the blacksmith who in the 15th century worked in this small room below his humble home. Pod Fumiju was the street of craftsmen who offered their services to peasants from the surrounding area who came into town through the southern gate by horse-drawn carts, not interfering with the life in the Plac, the town’s most representative part. The street you are passing along leads to the round tower dating from around 1500 and built for the purpose of defending the town’s southern gate. In Istria the beginning of the 16th century was a time of ever-present danger of Turkish attacks, so that many towns, including Gračišće, erected towers and defensive town walls. This tower was once at least twice as high as its present-day remains and was covered with a conical roof made of stone tiles - škrilje. As it happens, on her day, 16 September, Rovinj has always become the greatest meeting point of Istria. Wunderbarerweise durch eine Erzählung über die Hl. Eufemia auch heute noch nach 1200 Jahren nach ihrer Entstehung fängt jede Geschichte über die Stadt Rovinj. Die Heilige aus Chalzedon ist heute die Schutzpatronin der Stadt und hat in gewisser Weise dem Beginn des Tourismus in Rovinj beigetragen: nämlich an ihrem Tag, dem 16. Jahrhunderts in diesem kleinen Raum unter seiner bescheidenen Wohnung schmiedete. Pod Fumiju war die Straße der Handwerker, die ihre Dienste den Bauern aus der Umgebung anboten, die durch das Südtor die Stadt Einlass fanden, um mit ihren Gefährten das Leben auf dem Platz, dem repräsentativeren Teil des Städtchens, nicht zu stören. Not so long ago, the fishermen of Rovinj would catch their fish using a batana, while farmers would spend their days working in their vineyards. In the evening, all of them gathered in the basement Spacio (tavern) where they talked about the day’s events. After eating the fish caught that day and drank fine wine, they sang songs about everyday events, the sea, heartaches and joyful moments in life. Sometimes, because of too much wine running in their veins, discussions would arise. Be an active part of their lives with this interactive experience, feast on the fish and wine of the farmers of Rovinj. Choco & Wine Festival

Brtonigla-Verteneglio, 15.02. Passionate chocolate lovers always on the quest for more in the sweet world of chocolate tastes and flavours are invited to the second edition of Choco & Wine Fest in Brtonigla, revealing the new trends of pairing chocolate with wine to its visitors. All events will be marked by a profusion of oenological and gastronomic tastes, ranging from premium wines and olive oils to cheese, honey and lavender, paired with the main asset of the festival - chocolate. Brtonigla, host of the festival, is a well-known and recognized oenological destination. Accounting for over 10 percent of the Istrian wine production, Brtonigla is the first Istrian member of the Città del vino (Towns of Wine) international association. The 4th Brtonigla Adventure Trekk, a sports program attracting every year over 250 participants from Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, will also be held in the framework of the festival. This date was purposefully chosen for the race to show that sports and chocolate go together. A variety of workshops teaching decorative drawing with chocolate and wine will be organized, as well as lectures on the effect of chocolate on diet, its application in wellness programs, presentations through different pairings, tastings and a cooking show. Können agressiv zubereitet werden, mit Essig, scharfen Paprikaschoten und Aromapflanzen, oder aber sanft, mit ein paar Tropfen Zitronensaft und ein wenig Schnittlauch. Kleiner, schmaler und weicher Tintenfisch sind besser ganz zu braten, wobei die großen und dicken für Gerichte die länger gekocht werden müssen, und die besser geschnitten oder von innen angeschnitten zubereitet werden können. Diese werden noch mehr geschätzt, wenn diese nicht im Netz gefangen werden, sondern mit einer besonderen Angel geangelt werden, die ‘peškafonda’ heißt. On 20 September in 1876, the eagerly awaited Istrian railway was solemnly opened. However, its main purpose was to effectively connect the military port of Pula with its interior of the torn apart Austro-Hungarian Empire. Disappointed Istrians sulkily shook their heads since it was mainly built for the army purposes without any direct economic and commercial contribution to the “ordinary” people. This railway with its route running in the middle of the peninsula not only neglected the most densely inhabited north-western part of the peninsula but scarcely contributed to the local trade growth. Although the coastal towns enjoyed the advantages of economical and frequent maritime excursions, on the other hand, the communication between the cities in hinterland was reduced to minimum. Due to a lack of methods for launching the Istrian products on the market, they unjustifiably remained in shadow for a long time. These products included wine and olive oil from fertile hills around Vižinada, Grožnjan, Motovun, together with fruit, vegetables, cattle and the well-renowned stone from Momjan, Triban, Sveti Stejpan or Višnjan. Being aware of the significance of connecting these places with Trieste and Istrian railway, in 1880 the representatives of municipalities from the Mirna Valley sent a petition to the Minister for Trade in order to thoroughly consider this issue. Finally, in 1900, the first public tender for construction works on the Trieste-Buje section was published in the official journal of the Austrian Railways. The next year another one was published in the Osserrvatore Triestino for the continuation of construction works on the Buje-Poreč section. Als am 20. September 1876 die lang erwartete Istrische Eisenbahnlinie eröffnet wurde, die zu einer effizienten Verbindung des Kriegshafens Pula mit dem weit ausgedehnten österreichisch-ungarischen Kaiserreich beitragen sollte, das sich einerseits von der Lombardei bis nach Ungarn und Galizien erstrecke, und andererseits von der Adria bis zu den großen mitteleuropäischen Flüssen Elbe, Oder und Weichsel, sowie Dnister und dem Schwarzen Meer, haben die enttäuschten Istrier nur unwirsch die Köpfe geschüttelt. Diese Eisenbahnstrecke, die hauptsächlich zu militärischen Zwecken gebaut wurde, ohne die Wirtschafts- und Handelsoptionen für die Einwohner in Betracht zu ziehen, führte durch das Zentrum der Halbinsel, kam mit dem am dichtesten bewohnten Teil im Nordwesten kaum in Kontakt, und förderte schwach oder gar nicht das Wachstum des lokalen Handels. Obwohl die Küstenstädte noch immer die günstigen und häufigen Seewege in Anspruch nehmen konnten, war die Kommunikation zwischen den Kleinstädten im Hinterland auf ein Minimum zusammengeschrumpft. Daher fristeten die besten istrischen Produkte wie Wein und Olivenöl von den fruchtbaren Hügeln in der Umgebung von Vižinada, Grožnjan, Motovun, zusammen mit Salz, Obst, Gemüse, Vieh und dem weitbekann-

ten, hochwertigen Stein aus Momjan, Triban, Sv. Stjepan oder Višnjan noch lange ein kümmerliches Schattendasein. Die Gemeindevertreter aus dem Tal der Mirna waren sich jedoch der Wichtigkeit der Verbindung ihrer Region mit Triest und der Istrischen Eisenbahnlinie bewusst, und schickten schon 1880 eine Petition an den Wirtschaftsminister, in der sie eine ernsthafte Prüfung dieses Problems verlangten… Endlich, im Jahr 1900 wurde im offiziellen Blatt der Österreichischen Eisenbahn der erste Projektwettbewerb für die Arbeiten an der Strecke Triest - Buje ausgeschrieben, und schon im darauffolgenden Jahr im Osservatore Triestino der zweite für die Fortsetzung der Arbeiten an der Strecke Buje - Poreč. Ein ganzes Jahrhundert später blieb aus dem Konstruktionswunderwerk der romantischsten lokalen Eisenbahn, die sich ganze 33 Jahre langsam und beständig durch die verführerische, hügelige Landschaft des istrischen Hinterlandes schlängelte, von fleißigen Händen der Tagelöhner veredelt, recht wenig, aber immerhin genug übrig. Obwohl die Eisenbahngleise fast gar nicht mehr existieren - es blieben nur wenige davon übrig, die noch immer die kleine Brücke über den Bach Bazuje unweit von Marušići schmücken - und obwohl die Lokomotive und Waggons, heute museumsreif, schon lange anderen Eisenbahnunternehmen verkauft wurden, ist die Strecke der Parenzana, zusammen mit ihren am Leben gebliebenen Zeugen - 9 Tunnels, 6 Brücken, Viadukten und Haltestellen - ein unerlässlicher Bestandteil auf der Karte eines jeden Besuchers, der Istrien entdecken und kennen lernen will.
