Dear ISV Community The month of November started with a busy schedule of meetings and events, one of which saw our under 11’s mixed football team record a 2:0 victory over a visiting international school. The long awaited middle school ParentTeacher Conference (PTC) was a very successful meeting, where parents and teacher got their first real chance to exchange ideas and information: the next one will be in mid-February.

Trips out of school this month included visits to the Fine Arts Museum, the Ho Chi Minh Museum, and the aquarium. Our visitors included Mr. Melvyn Lim, the Cambridge Exam Board’s School’s Development Manager for Vietnam, who spend an hour with parents one Saturday morning, before using the school as a base to host schools from around Hanoi and the surrounding area. The theme of that meeting was how to build the Cambridge curriculum into the local curriculum, which goes some way to show how significant and far-reaching the Cambridge curriculum is on the world stage. Staying with Cambridge (CIE), it is worth saying all middle school student took a range of Cambridge English language tests, in the second half of November, to assess their current level of English, and these results can now be distributed to parents.

On a lighter note, the Teachers’ Day (on 20th November) was combined with an art competition, in which over half our students took part. Parents and staff voted on the prize winners, and the lobby area was filled with the piece of work, and they are all still being displayed on the school website. As we came to the end of the month, a group of PYP girls organized a lunch-time sale of hand-made crafts to raise money for charity (they were keen to keep teacher involvement to a minimum), and Grade 5 held “The Night of the Notables”, where each student in the class give a presentation on one of their role models. Ho Chi Ming, Winston Churchill, and Taylor Swift were amongst the famous people featured in the presentation to parents, staff and other students. The last teaching day of the month had a fire-drill (with all students on the field in under three minutes) though I have to confess that the real smoke produced by the man burning leaves next to the wall was not part of the drill – it was just a man burning leaves next to the wall. We only have two weeks of school in December, and then return to school on Monday 5th January, so the next newsletter will be at the end of January. Hopefully I will get the chance to see many of you at the Christmas bazaar on 6th December, or the final assembly on Friday 12th December, but if I do not see you then, may I wish you a safe and enjoyable winter break. Our Gingerbread Men ran away! What a lot of excitement we have had this week with our new inquiry! We started the inquiry, How we express ourselves, by reading the story of The Gingerbread Man. Our inquiry is all about stories and The Gingerbread Man is one of our favourite stories. After reading the story we decided to make our own Gingerbread Men biscuits. We had to follow instructions to make the biscuits.

We then took our Gingerbread Men biscuits to the kitchen and put them in the oven. We went back after play to collect the Gingerbread Men biscuits and they were not there. They had run away!

Maths

In our word-study we have been working as a whole class on practicing vowel sounds (a e i o u). These five letters can have a short or a long sound, and can be particularly challenging for bilingual or multilingual students, as the sounds are frequently similar but not quite the same in different languages. The children enjoyed practicing the sounds at the beginning of each lesson with this short sing-along: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR-BLFZyAWs In Reader’s & Writer’s Workshop we have been exploring two stories by author and illustrator Zehra Hicks: “The Boy Who Hated Toothbrushes” and “The Girl Who Loved Wellies”. We have found a pattern in the stories and many students are now experimenting with using this pattern to make their own books.

We have continued our work on measurement, and all students can now confidently measure using a ruler or a tape measure, use a ruler to draw a straight line, and use a ruler to draw a line of a certain length. Whilst some of our practice has been with worksheets, a lot of our measurement work has been part of our Push and Pull Inquiry investigations. For example, when investigating inclined planes, the children needed to use a ruler to make an inclined plane at 10cm, 15cm, 20cm, and 30cm. They then used a tape measure to find out the distance travelled by a toy vehicle that went down the different inclines. We also used dot graph paper and a ruler to create geometric pictures as part of our ruler practice.

Unit of Inquiry There are two big questions guiding our Push and Pull Inquiry Unit. “What causes things to move or to stop moving?” and “How do simple machines work?” We began by exploring the first question, and in the process we learned about forces, gravity, inertia, and friction. We are now using our knowledge of these things to find out about simple machines, how they work, and why they are helpful. We began by looking at levers, first as a tool for moving heavy things, and then we explored what happens when we move the fulcrum by turning rulers and glue sticks into catapults! For better or for worse, the children now know where to put the fulcrum if they want to shoot plastic blocks at each other using their rulers and glue…Next, we explored inclined planes. We used the inclined planes in our playground (the slides) to move heavy glue jugs from the ground to the top of the climbing equipment, and used small inclined planes to make ramps for toy cars and trucks.

Homework Hints

INQUIRY UNIT: Go on a simple machine hunt with your child, either at home or in your neighborhood. You can refresh your knowledge of what to look for with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7xS2Ali1t8

Page 07

Grade 1 Updates by Ms. Stephanie We are trying to lift two heavy jugs of glue straight up from the ground. This was very difficult!

When we use the slide as an inclined plane to pull and push the glue up, the work is much easier. Now we can move the glue quite easily.

Working in groups of three to build ramps with different degrees of incline, and then roll toy cars and trucks down them. Does the incline change the distance the vehicle rolls? Why might that be?

Grade 2 Updates by Ms. Audrey During the last two weeks, Grade Two has been exploring the elements of art and creating a bit of their own! We have experimented using oil pastels, water-based paint, writing poetry of various sorts and creating works of art while listening to different types of music. Last week we took a trip to the Hanoi Museum of Fine Arts where we looked at paintings, drawings, sculptures, statues, weavings, clothing, everyday items that were artfully made, carvings and very old pottery to mention some of the works. We discussed what went into the art, such as materials used, colors chosen, and the feelings that the artist might have been feeling when the work of art was created. We pondered why certain works of art are titled the way they are, why some works are not titled and even why if a piece needs to have a title at all! Below are some photos of our trip as well as a few photos of our own creations.

Each week Grade 3 spends half an hour with their buddy class Pre-K/K1. Recently we visited Pre-K/K1 and performed a short puppet play about animals to share some of the information we learned in our Amazing Animals unit of inquiry

This week we went outside with Pre-K/K and had some fun with a parachute.

Grade 4 Updates by Ms. Penny Friday November 28, 2014 Grade 4 has been enthusiastically exploring their new inquiry unit about explorers. Our central idea is: Exploration leads to discoveries, opportunities and new understandings.

Language Grade 4 is learning how to write biographies. Each student chose one person to research, record and presented a comic strip about their life. Throughout this inquiry students will be learning about the lives of explorers and writing biographies about them.

This week we learned about the Viking explorers. We also learned a new way to present our research using an App called Glogster. Glogster allows students to create a digital poster. Check out some highlights from our Glogsters!

This week we have been learning about mapping and creating maps of the different parts of the school by measuring and using a scale. We are also focusing on learning problem solving strategies such as trial and error and working backwards to solve multi-step word problems.

Unit Of Inquiry The students have been working on their student inquiries. Each student had to choose a role model to research. They gathered information about their role model and put that information into a biography. Next they chose a way to present the biography. They chose to do a PowerPoint presentation or an iMovie. As you all know the final stage was to present to you at yesterday’s ‘Night of the Notables’. Didn’t they do a great job? I have some photos on the next page. Well done, guys! Keep it going. Teaching empathy: What kind of parent are you? By Amy Joyce February 4 Have we forgotten to teach our kids to be … nice? Today’s parents are perpetually urged to monitor their children’s feelings, focus on the child and essentially make their children their entire focus. There’s a downside to this, argues Harvard psychologist Richard Weissbourd. Focusing exclusively on our children’s feelings causes them to do the same — often at the expense of others. (Notice any bullying in the news as of late?) Weissbourd is working to change that. “The big hope,” he says, “is that we get people to rethink some of the parenting trends out there, particularly in affluent communities.” Weissbourd runs the Making Caring Common Project, which aims to make “caring and responsibility for others … priorities in child-raising.” “We need to get parents to tone down some of that focus on whether their kids are happy and make the higher priority being responsible for others,” he says. “I hear parents noting kids’ moods all the time.” (Are you happy? How did that make you feel? Is this okay with you?) As an unintended result, he argues, children think about their own feelings constantly, and don’t wonder if the new kid in their class is lonely, ask why their mom looks so frazzled or notice when they hurt their little sister’s feelings. Weissbourd, who was recently awarded a $2 million grant to help parents teach kids to be more empathetic, said he doesn’t mean that parents should neglect their children or their children’s feelings. But they need to shift the parenting balance so it’s not so focused on the child. So how does he think we can help our kids become kind, empathetic beings? A few tips:

I am currently undertaking a professional development course and as part of the course I was asked to read and comment on the following article. After reading the article I thought it would be good to share it with all the parents at our school.

1. Remember that kids are modeling you. They learn by watching what you do. And so … make sure to be nice to the “invisible” people. The waitress, the bus driver, the store clerk. If you say ‘Thank you” and “Please” to them, so will your children.": [] } } 2. Stop focusing on their feelings. Yes, it’s important to help your kids understand their feelings. But too much focus on how they feel can cause them to overfocus on themselves. There is a danger that focusing on their feelings will “cause children to dramatize their feelings, and to make their own feelings too precious.” 3. Hold the praise. Sure, tell them they did a good job when they do. But avoid the constant praise we are so used to hearing these days. “When children are praised all the time, they feel judged all the time,” Weissbourd says. They may also feel patronized or they may get an inflated sense of importance. 4. Do Unto Others. Don’t prioritize their happiness over the happiness of others. Don’t let them ignore a friend they find annoying. Encourage them to give credit to other children for their achievements. And pay attention to how you interact with your own friends — your children are watching. 5. Practice what you preach. Parents are so often focused on their own children that they don’t exhibit concern for anyone else’s. These parents should heed the Russian adage, “There’s no such thing as other people’s children.” “Our children are not likely to develop respect and concern for others who are struggling if we don’t model this concern,” says Weissbourd.

PE Updates by Mr. Liam Greetings all, It has been a very productive term to date. All students have progressed in the swimming pool and I am seeing students enjoying their time in the water. The water has been kept clean, and very warm and the lifeguards are doing a great job keeping the area tidy and safe. In PE this month we are focusing on team skills. The activities we are doing are developing the students individually and in a team situation. It has been a pleasure watching the students developing their skills and progress in different situations. I am also very happy with the progress a number of students are developing in a leadership role. I know it is difficult for many students to communicate, especially having English as a second language. However. I am seeing that this barrier is slowly moving as the students are displaying a good understanding of each other. On top of this I am seeing students assist each other in a team environment. This has been a real bonus as the skills learnt in PE are transferable in the school environment. I am very happy to see the students developing new skills and gaining confidence. Again, we managed to get a few games of soccer in against BIS. The games were all very successful and I look forward to future events with BIS. Congratulations to all for a great term. Kind Regards Mr. Liam

Grades 6, 7 and 8 have researched into countries where French is spoken. They discovered that over 115 millions of people speak French and it is the official language in 29 countries such as Belgium, Swiss, Italy, Mali, Congo, Monaco, Canada, Madagascar, Luxembourg, Haiti and of course France. They picked a country and search information about it. Great job to all of them. You can have a look at the posters in the French room.

Page 17

Music & Drama Updates from Mr. Daniel Pre K & K1 are experiencing classic stories through a range of activities, games, songs and drama. So far we have enjoyed The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We are using a wonderful range of stories from educator Bev Evans, whose versions of the tales are rewritten in language appropriate for the young ages of our students, and employ colourful pictures to reveal the stories as they are told. The children are enjoying meeting the characters and helping them solve problems through drama. K2 are learning the names and sounds of percussion instruments through activities and songs. The students are also enjoying more complex stories and learning to retell tales by ‘jumping into the books’ in drama. The children are now enjoying taking on roles and developing their language in new more challenging games. Grade One are busy rehearsing a play for our Christmas celebration. Each child has a role to play and scripted lines to learn. We are performing an adaptation of The Enormous Turnip entitled The Enormous Christmas Present. In music we now have a distinct understanding of the difference between beat and rhythm, and are beginning to notate the individual rhythms of the songs sung in class. G2 and G3 are exploring the central idea ‘people express their feelings through the arts.’ The classes are working together to produce a shadow puppet show in a transdisciplinary unit collaboration with Art. The Boy Who Cried Wolf will be performed with G2 as the puppeteers and G3 providing the narration and character voices. The show will receive its premier at the Christmas Celebration on Friday 12th December. The Students of G4 have explored a number of artistic avenues this quarter including scripted drama, the development of characters and placing these characters into dramatic stories. We have finally decided that we would like to present what we call the Multilingual Jingle- students decided to use Lord James Pierpont’s famous song Jingle Bells as the basis for their performance. We have put together our own version of the song in four languages, English, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese, and developed a percussive accompaniment for the song. This masterpiece will be performed at the Christmas Celebration. Our learners in Grade Five are busy with the final rehearsals for their play “Tom’s Bomb” and this will surely bring the house down! In music we made come connection with the unit of inquiry centered on role models. We have been looking at how celebrities (pop stars and actors) have used their fame to influence and their responsibility as role models to young people. We have learned the 1984 version of the song Do they Know it’s Christmas? and have been able to compare this to the new version of the song that has been released 30 years later. G6 to 8 came together recently to share the practical work they had been perfecting last quarter. A great afternoon of music, critique and reflection was had by all! Grade Six are now considering concepts of pitch and the placement of notes on the treble and bass clefs. They will also be inquiring into the fundamental and defining features present in all forms of music in their project What is Music? G7 are also considering concepts of pitch and the placement of notes on the treble and bass clefs but at an extended range. Grade 7 have also just begun an exploration of Music in Movies though which we will consider the famous works of notable Hollywood film composers focusing in depth on certain case studies and selecting, rehearsing and performing pieces as a whole group. G8 are studying concepts of pitch and the placement of notes on the treble and bass clefs. This work will be extended into an exploration of Major and Minor Scales and their construction in Harmonic and Melodic forms. In practical Grade Eight have formed two trio groups and are working on the arrangement and rehearsal of pieces of music for our Christmas Celebration. They are also creating a project that considers strong examples of this musical form and documenting their process of preparation.

Page 18

Arts Updates by Ms. Katherine K1 and Pre K art students looked at the work of artist Stuart Davis, who worked in New York and Paris during the twentieth century. Davis often used letters in his art. So students had a fun time playing “I Spy” and finding the letters and words in each piece. They also sang the name song form Sesame Street. Then, they cut and collaged shapes and letters to create their own name letter art works.

First Grade students visited the lily pond and the Japanese bridge of artist Claude Monet by viewing a video from the National Gallery of Art. Then, they analyzed the artist’s use of color, and predicted what times of day he would have been painting during. Then they used oil pastels, mixing and blending colors to create their own water lilies. The art works were completed by adding watercolors in the impressionist style – with dots and dabs of different colors.

K2 Students looked at the illustrator Eric Carle, and studied his artistic process. They also creating wildly colored and textured painted papers, as Carle does. Carle then collages the shapes that he cuts out and creates figures in this way. So K2 artists drew animal shapes, and cut out and overlapped these shapes to create various animal illustrations.

Second grade artists have been investigating how artists work in media to express themselves through the creative arts. They studied the theater design of artist Julie Taymor, who created the Broadway show The Lion King. Then, they studied the shadow puppetry of Southeast Asia. Second graders will be presenting a shadow puppet production of The Boy Who Cried Wolf using the shadow puppets that they have designed.

Page 19

Arts Updates by Ms. Katherine Third grade artists have been studying the work of artist Paul Klee. Mr. Klee was one of the pioneers of abstraction in the early twentieth century. Third graders analyzed his work, looking for art elements such as texture, line and color, and then created artwork using art principles of movement, rhythm and emphasis. Third graders can now identify the hallmarks of abstract art, and have created some amazing abstract works of their own using these principles and ideas.

Fifth grade artists connected their investigation in the art room with a unit of investigation on “role models”. They were introduced to 12 very different since contemporary artists, and then chose a contemporary role model in the arts. After researching these artists, they created power points that told the stories of the artists’ artwork and lives. We will continue this investigation of contemporary art and artists into the New Year. Look for art “installations” in the school building and an art show opening in January.

Fourth grade students have continued their investigation into Pop Art by studying the work of artist Andy Warhol. Warhol began as a commercial artist in New York City, and then shocked the art world by painting Coca-Cola bottles and Campbell’s soup cans. Warhol was also obsessed with celebrity figures. Fourth grade artists chose celebrity photographs, and then used arbitrary color to create some garishly colorful portraits.

Sixth grade students have invest igated post impressionist and expressionist landscape painting. They looked at various artists’ use of color to create different moods and atmospheres. Then, they looked at the realistic textures found in landscapes and created studies, practicing ways of drawing these textures using marking. Sixth grade artists synthesized all of this knowledge and study into the creation of expressive landscapes of their own. Now, they are studying the broken and atmospheric color used by the impressionist painters. They will then build on their prior knowledge of perspective to create an impressionist style cityscape.

Page 20

Arts Updates by Ms. Katherine Seventh Grade artists have finished studying artist Roy Lichtenstein. Art students have used skills of measuring and ratio to create self-portraits in the same style as large comic strips. Now, they are investigating the work of Trento Doyle Hancock, who also draws on the “tradition” of comic book heroes and caricature to create fantastic tales in his art. Seventh graders worked together to write a narrative that includes the protagonists “Big Mac” and “Curly Fries” who fight to rescue “Pizza the Hut” from various vegetable themed protagonists.

The eighth graders have created some beautiful illustrative works that use various types of Islamic pattern and also make use of symmetrical and radial balance. Now, students are continuing their work with pattern as they investigate traditional West African story quilts and the work of contemporary artist Faith Ringgold. They have written stories and are currently creating studies for characters, backgrounds and details that will be used in their final illustrations and quilts.

English Updates by Mr. Janos This month all students were busy with our in house Preliminary English Test. All parents should have received their children’s results by now. Grade 6 has finished their film trailers for Black Beauty. We are currently wrapping this unit while looking ahead to factual writing. Grade 7 is completing a look at the film Supersize Me, while preparing to continue our unit on poetry. They have just finished writing Shakespearean sonnets.

In Middle School Humanities, students are concluding our investigation into various epochs in history. We will return to our history units later in the academic year. In all grades, students will be focusing on the five themes of geography, especially human interaction with the environment. We are examining the effects that humans have on their immediate surroundings and the “ripple effect” that human actions have on the environment.

Grade 8 has completed their mythology unit and begun studying The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

ICT Updates by Mr. Michael Over the last month grade 6s have been editing images, creating a comic book on the theme of using computers online. They added a QR code to their comics to make it more authentic. They also finished making a 30 second podcast advertising a product with some very professional results. They have just started using Scratch to create a game or an animation The grade 7s have been using Google Sketchup to make a 3D model of a real world object with some amazing results. They have also been editing images and creating a podcast advert using sound effects, music and vocals. They have started creating a game in Scratch that will be uploaded onto the Scratch website. Grade 8s have been looking in detail at sound editing and making a podcast as well as creating a Scratch game that has many features of modern games. They will then be able to build on this to start looking at creating and making smartphone apps. They have now started to look at .gif animations and creating an animation using Adobe Flash. Grade 4 and 5 have also looked at editing images and sound as well as looking at comics strips and scratch animations. This is an excellent foundation for them to learn the skills early that they will need for middle school. Grade 5s worked really hard to create some really impressive influence maps.
