The Venues | THE DOWNTOWN CLUB AT THE MET & GALLERIA TENNIS AND ATHLETIC CLUB THE DOWNTOWN CLUB AT THE MET
The Downtown Club at the Met which is part of ClubCorp, a distinguished network of private clubs opened its doors on January 31, 1976 and is one of the most comprehensive sports, wellness and business clubs in Houston. In addition to the 10 tennis, 5 international squash and 4 racquetball courts, we also offer dining, private and special events, group fitness classes, over 50,000 square feet of fitness equipment and more. The Club has hosted many events, Pro and amateur tournaments, which included many great celebrities and dignitaries. Just to name a few, the first of which was the $20,000 National Father-Son Indoor Championships started by Davis Cup former Pro and long time GM of the Club, Sammy Giammalva and the WTC Pro Circuit Houston tournament used the Club as a backup and practice site. The current Director of Tennis, Keith Christman, has been at The Downtown Club at the Met for over 20 years. He has continued the tradition of supporting intercollegiate tennis with Rice University, the University of Houston and community events through the years with the support of the Members. The Club has always thought of hosting the National Championships and is proud that it is finally here in Houston. THE GTAC STORY Galleria Tennis & Athletic Club is known today as one of the premier tennis and fitness facilities in United States, encompassing more than 80,000 square feet atop Houston’s prestigious Galleria shopping mall. In 2006, the space was a tennis wasteland left deserted and dilapidated when the University Club shut its doors after 35years in business. That’s where former tennis tour professionals, Niclas Kroon and Ville Jansson, enter the picture. Other than their Swedish heritage, there is one more thing these childhood friends have in common—their passion for the game 6
of tennis. They had a vision to create the finest club in the Houston area, and the space left empty by the University Club provided the perfect opportunity. When GTAC opened its doors in the summer of 2008, local families and professionals couldn’t wait to see what all the fuss was about. It didn’t take long to build a bustling membership that enhanced the social appeal while still maintaining an exclusive, relaxed feel. Now an established force in the Houston club community, GTAC is just as well known for its worldclass tennis and fitness programs as it is for its tight-knit membership and exciting social events.

About the ITA Awards program: As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of varsity collegiate tennis players. The ITA, which is comprised of nearly 1,700 men’s and women’s varsity coaches and 20,000 student-athletes from over 1,200 institutions, has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership, sportsmanship and athletic performance. Awards are given to both men and women, on the Regional and National levels to all Divisions represented within the ITA (NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and Community and Junior Colleges). The ITA annually recognizes over 3,000 studentathletes on an individual and team basis from over 500 different varsity tennis programs. More than 300 coaches participate in the award selection process, serving on Regional and/or National selection committees. For more information on the ITA Awards program, please visit http://www.itatennis.com/AboutITA/AbouttheITA.htm.
ITA Achievement Award Winners
Now in its 20th year, the ITA Achievement Award pays tribute each year to past participants in the world of varsity tennis who have achieved excellence in their chosen careers. The spirit of the award honors both professional success and contributions to society, made either as a direct result of a career, or through humanitarian efforts. 1994 Judge Peggy Brenden, Luther College ’76 Dr. Athan James Shaka, Harvey Mudd College ’80 1995 Dr. Rebecca Birchmore Campen, University of Georgia ’63 Senator John Breaux, University of Southwestern Louisiana ’64 1996 Wilma A.
