CLASS HAPPENINGS Dear Parents, Please take the time to read this newsletter in its entirety! It is important that you are plugged in to the great things that are happening in the 5th grade at SSC! I will begin offering a Math study session on Tuesday mornings, beginning September 21st at 7:20 a.m. This session is open to all students; however, there are two stipulations. First, your child must be on time. No one will be admitted after 7:25 a.m. because we only have about 20 minutes to work. Second, your child must come prepared with a question or a specific idea of what he/she needs help with in Math. Your help with this will make our study sessions more beneficial! A second study session for other subject areas will be offered on Thursday mornings, beginning September 23rd, at 7:20 a.m. The same rules apply for this study session...Students must be on time and come with specific questions!

Curriculum News Math Currently in Math, students are engaged in describing and comparing strategies to solve 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problems. Students have been creating representations for their problems and using arrays to represent different ways of breaking up a problem. A new Math game titled Multiplication Compare was introduced in class today. During this game, students are examining which product is greater by comparing products involving multiples of 10. We are getting ready to explore multiplication cluster problems. These problems are intended to provide different ways to break up a final problem or use related problems to solve it. These skills will help us when we work on more difficult multiplication later in the year. Be on the lookout for another book to accompany student Math homework. Hoover City Schools partnered with Pearson Publishing Company to create a customized companion textbook that provides students additional practice with basic math computation skills. From time to time, students will have Math assignments using this text. These books are NOT consumables like the Investigations student workbook; therefore, when assignments are given, they must be done on a separate sheet of
paper…Not in the book! These books will be transported to and from home only when assignments are given. This is another great resource we are providing students to help master important math skills!
Social Studies In preparation for our field trip to Montgomery later this month, we are discussing Alabama’s entry into statehood and establishment of the three branches of government and the constitutions. We will also discuss the political and geographic reasons for changes in location of Alabama’s state capital and prominent political leaders during early statehood in Alabama. Reading We recently finished our first read-aloud of the year, Flying Solo, by Ralph Fletcher. It was a popular choice following our summer reading discussion and the students voted to start the year out in reading by hearing a positive message about community, character, and friendship. Following the read-aloud, students were given the opportunity to create a Character Map for one of the main characters in the story. During independent reading, students are engaged in a time of reading and reflection with the help of a reading response journal. Students must complete three response entries each week. Each entry must include a prediction (before reading), questions

and clarifications (during reading), and a summary (after the reading).
Writing/Language Arts Grammar Boot Camp continues with verbs. We will study action verbs, linking verbs, and helping verbs, as well as irregular verbs and verb tenses. Spelling/Vocabulary Last week our Spelling unit focused on how to spell the /k/ sound. This week, we are back to vocabulary and words associated with the prefix “dis.” For the test on Friday, students will have to match the vocabulary word with the correct definition. Remember, we utilize SpellingCity.com for both Spelling and Vocabulary assignments. This is a valuable resource, so be sure to check it out!
Don’t’ forget to check and sign agendas nightly!
