more variable duration jets that, combined suitably, allow to produce waves that completely disintegrate the straw hat by immersing it with liquid, without violent mechanical actions or moving organs that could create dregs. Advantages? Effective extraction of the entire hat, reduction of vinification time, easy grubbing and, moreover, the system is flexible and can be installed on existing tanks. Another field of application is the manufacture of preforms for PET, where besides being essential to have oil-free air this should be available at pressures above 10 bar. The opening and closing of the shutters must be quick to ensure high production, so compressed air must always be maintained between 10.5 bar and 11.5 bar. If other oil- free technologies have the limitation of working at a maximum of 10 bar due temperature issue, the AQ can safely reach the 13 bar of pressure responding fully to the process needs. “Warm water causes scal-

ing and bacteria growth”, doesn’t it? Not in the AQ… The water quality should be impeccable from the start. That is why the AQ is started up with distilled water and maintains its own water supply through a “reverse osmosis” (RO) membrane that filters out particles and minerals that could cause depositions and scaling. The AQ is regularly and automatically flushed to prevent bacteria and minerals from accumulating, so the water quality remains reliable at all times

of mishap. Hostile environment But what if something happens to the Reverse Osmosis Unit? Or what if the unit is not operated for some time? Even then, bacteria don’t stand a chance inside the AQ, thanks to the temperatures and turbulence. Continuous water renewal also puts a halt to colonization and washes away any possible nutrients for bacteria. And yes, we put this to the test… The reliable operation of the AQ has of course been tested in various operating conditions. But especially to tackle some of those customer concerns, the AQ was tested by an independent third party organization. They ran the AQ in extreme conditions and even simulated component failures and with different types of possible bacteria. Simulations showed no bacteria were carried over into the compressed air, even with the dryer and cooler shut down.

Selecting the right materials The AQ protects itself from possible corrosion thanks to the RO unit, which keeps corrosive minerals and salts at bay, but also thanks to its top-class components. The AQ element’s rotors are made from a ceramic and polymeric material, the shaft from stainless steel and its casing is an aluminum and bronze alloy. A specific refractometer installed in by-pass on the filling machine feeding line, allows the constant check

new brewery for Mainz. The boys from Kuehn Kunz Rosen have realised their dream and recently started brewing “craft beer� for Mainz. The project has been accompanied by ourselves, the Clemens company, from Wittlich, among others. We have supplied a GAI MLE 881 filling machine for beer, a GAI 5106 exterior bottle washing machine and an Enos Speedy labelling machine. The filling line is an 8-position high-pressure filler for beer with an 8-position rinser and a single-position crown corker from the company GAI. The pressure filler is equipped with electropneumatic filling pipes, which have already been patented and marketed in 2013 and have a capacity of up to 1,500 bottles/h in 0.33l beer bottles. The applications can be either traditional, with earth and paper filters, or innovative, with cross-flow or osmotic filtration systems. The latter provides numerous benefits. For instance, in cross-flow filtration the liquid is pushed by pressure through membrane pores: this way it is possible to increase the yield while reducing energy consumption and production costs, for instance by eliminating the need for purifiers and adjuvants.

In the full-automatic version, the PLC manages all the filling, filtering, emptying and washing operations, while constantly monitoring all the necessary parameters without requiring the operator intervention. Thanks to the touch panel it is possible to set all the necessary parameters for the correct functioning of the machine. Another solution which raised considerable interest by our customers is

Lees-stop, cross-flow filter. This product is best suited for “difficult” productions (up to 70% of solid particles suspended) and it was awarded as innovative technology at SIMEI 2015. “Lees-Stop” is specifically realized for products rich in suspended solid particles, and substitutes the traditional polymeric membranes of crossflow filters with sintered stainless steel. Sinterization is a heat treatment for steel powder during which steel particles are welded together without reaching the melting point. Numerous tests showed how this material is ideal for

cross-flow filtrations of high turbidity liquids, yielding out-flow products with concentrations up to 95% v/v. Sinterized steel particles arrangement provides it with high mechanical and chemical resistance, resulting in a very high tolerance to high pressure, heat-shock, hits and high pHs. It is indeed a very durable solution. Furthermore Lees-Stop offers the possibility to filter a vast array of products, from sediments to in-

dustrial waste-waters: outstanding results were obtained, for instance, by juices producers. Finally, when taking into account the high yields, the reduction of waste-disposal costs, the complete automation and the economic return from the process wastes, “Lees-Stop” represents the best solution for those who need to perform high efficiency filtrations at a greatly reduced cost. ductions. For instance Filtro PLUMA, which was as well presents at SIMEI 2015, is specifically designed for juices producers. In this sector it is essential to greatly reduce the microbial load while preserving the organoleptic characteristics of the product. PLUMA guarantees both a high quality filtration and a microbessafe product. Just like with UNICO, PUMA’s filtering elements allow to perform multiple regenerations with hot water and detergents. One of the products that was highly appreciated ad requested is our new system for the cold stabilization of liquors and distilled beverages. Often distilled beverages such as rhum, brandy, cognac and grappa are subjected to a refrigeration well below 0°C after their dilution according to their alcohol content, in order to separate oily substances and to remove them with cold filtration. This way it is possible to

maintain the brilliance and the stability of the beverage at any temperature, during its storing and distribution. VLS Technologies system stands out for its reliability, simplicity of use and for its cost efficiency. It is reliable as our refrigeration solution is based on a vapor compression system that utilizes a dry expansion evaporator with a scraped self-cleaning surface, which is widely tested on many other applications of the food and beverage industry. It is easy to use, because, once started, the machine is able to carry on for days without any supervision, thanks to sensors and tools dedicated to the constant monitoring of the processing parameters, automatically intervening to correct any eventual variation occurring in the characteristics of product.
