able for IQF freezing all variety of fruits, vegetables and numerous sea, meat and cheese products, redefining IQF Technology With Adaptable Air Flow. EASY Freeze technology is providing perfect shape of IQF product and no clumps - Full controlled fluidisation method keeps the product constantly suspended above the belt in a cushion of air. The result is the immediate crust freezing and efficient core freezing of individual pieces, regardless of type, variety or condition of product. Maximized freezing efficiency for each unique product, whether the product is heavy, light, soft, sticky or fragile, thanks to Variable speed control of all fans and belts, allow-

ing on-the-fly optimization of air flow conditions. Interior video monitoring allows for real-time supervising of operating conditions, allowing the complete control and adjustments of the entire process from outside, without necessity to entering into the freezer. EASY Freeze is considered as the freezer with the most superior sanitation, giving the possibility to user to freeze different products one after the other without risk of cross – contamination. EASY Freeze is ENERGY SAVING and TROUBLE FREE solution for all your freezing needs.

NEWS

Within the freezing equipment product line, PIGO also manufactures the innovative EASY Freeze SPYRO, the latest generation of spiral freezers giving utmost advantages to the users in terms of energy efficiency, hygienic conditions and advanced technological caracteristics, such as: • Belts gear motors are positioned outside the insulated cabin (no lubrication inside the freezer) avoiding any risks of contaminations due to some oil leakages; • The unit doesn’t have any mezzanine floor and or intermediary platform, to avoid any dirtiness accumulation (presence of any mezzanine floor or intermediary

In order to obtain a quick freezing process EASY Freeze SPYRO is designed for high speed circulation (4 -10 m/sec) of cold air in contact with the product, on the whole length of the spiral conveyor; • Very low weight loss, which is two times less then with vertical air flow • Hitting the incoming product with the coldest air; the product is therefore immediately “crusted” and snow formation diminished; PIGO freezers are built in modular sizes and all components are made entirely of stainless steel, capable to provide perfectly frozen product even for delicate products like cooked rice, raspberries, etc. PIGO also designs, fabricates and assembles sophisticated freeze dryers, EASY Freeze

DRYER - LYOPHILIZER, product line which includes a broad range of standard and custom units. The freeze drying - dehydration technology allows to save delicate aromas while drying the frozen product under vacuum, producing premium quality product. Premium sensorial properties for finished product, absolutely superimposable to those of the fresh product. Machine execution is entirely in stainless steel (Chamber, doors, hinges, shelf modules, etc). In the EASY Freeze Drying concept Shelf modules and vapour condenser are contained inside chamber, giving as final result much shorter freeze drying time then any other freeze drying technology. Viewing ports are provided in the doors, allowing observation of both the vapour condenser and product trays during the drying cycle. Each unit is equipped with complete refrigeration plant of corresponding size, including also refrigeration condensing unit is purpose-built with capacity control to allow economical use of refrigerant. Includes condenser unit. Besides EASY Freeze, EASY Freeze SPYRO, and EASY Freeze DRYER- LYOPHILIZER, one of the company’s main machines is automatic

GYLON BIO-LINE®

Segment Leader Food & Pharma, Stephen Doherty

In the pharmaceutical and food processing industries, down time is not desirable. Sterilization cycles are carried out in the shortest possible time with high concentrations of the chemicals, high temperatures and increased flow through velocities. With these requirements the limits of the elastomer sealing properties are quickly reached. GYLON BIO-LINE® offers a new sealing material for all temperatures and processes.

The typical cycle temperatures are in the range of 120°C up to 130°C, in extreme cases even 140°C for the duration of two hours. The SIP cycles end with a cool down of the system by pressurized water. As a reaction to the

I sistemi portacavo in filo d’acciaio evolvono Le passerelle Canalfil hanno un sistema di assemblaggio veloce e sono più facili da gestire rispetto ai sistemi tradizionali

I

I materiali costruttivi variano dall’acciaio elettrozincato all’inox

n Europe, in the last decade, steel cable supports have gradually changed from typical niche item to multi-functional support for power cables, data, safety, and for modular cable systems. Canalfil produces solutions for any design requirement, providing steel cable support systems of various size and quality material. Canalfil cable ducts have been designed and built in such a way as to grant sound support to suspended cables as set by laying and mounting guiding lines. By using thinner steels, the structure of the cable ducts has become lighter and lighter, thus getting such weight-load ratio as to grant excellent performance also in case of heavy duty. The performances of Canalfil cable ducts depend on payload, which is directly proportional to the rigidity of their structure. Canalfil grants high-quality standards, since the most important elements combining to make the structure of the cable duct are: thickness of steel bars, their positioning, the quality of the seal at every intersection of longitudinal and lateral bars, which determine the rigidity of the duct. The high-quality seal of lateral cables guarantees high resistance. Canalfil proposes a complete range of cable supports, which not only consists of straight paths for housing and possible retaining, but it can also be integrated with an extensive range of accessories, purposely studied to always offer engineers the most efficient and inexpensive solution. Construction materials range from electrogalvanizeds steel to

stainless steel 304 and 316, decontaminated and pickled, depending on the environment where they are installed. Constant search for solutions that may help to reduce costs leads to growing use of systems that enable quick installation. Canalfil cable ducts feature fast assembly system and are much easier to manage than traditional systems for they are lighter than other duct systems, require less manpower during installation and take up less space, which result into saving higher than 25% on traditional cable ducts.

Safely filling different containers is a key processing step in all of these industries. Semiautomatic filling systems like the FSL-Pro M can weigh liquids to the gram and safely pack them as well. They can even handle flammable, foamy and corrosive liquids. In the fully-

automatic systems, the containers are automatically transported to the filling station and then conveyed automatically as well. Customers wishing to operate even more efficiently can expand the system for closing and labeling the products after filling.

gram-precise results, precision and flexible functionality. Clean filling processes without any contamination as well as hygienic design are central criteria for food production and in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore, Bizerba provide the necessary expertise to adapt all the components of its filling systems to highly sensitive products and the requirements of the socalled Ex Zone 1.

These filling systems expand existing Bizerba product portfolio centered around industrial weighing technology. Similar to classical weighing applications, www.bizerba.com key requirements include 24

Application: Miniature Ecolab-certified photoelectric sensor detects presence of cheese portions in high-volume food processing Products involved: LHR-C23PA-TMS-60C Description: During high-volume production of individually packaged cheese portions, conveyors deliver product to packaging stations. In-line buffering stations regulate flow to match packaging throughput; miniature Ecolab-certified sensors detect the presence of each portion after buffering, triggering the packaging cycle. Sensitivity parameters for each portion size, stored on the sensor’s inbuilt memory, may be updated remotely (trough IO-Link communication) without manual intervention, eliminating the need for unplanned sanitization between batches.

Task: A Swiss manufacturer of premium dairy products produces a range of individually packaged cheese portions in a high-volume hygienic production facility. Once cut to size, cheese portions travel on a food-grade conveyor to a packaging station; the duration of the packaging cycle is dependent on the type of cheese and the portion size.

sion from the Contrinex C23 product family are ideally suited to this application. These miniature cubic devices, mounted above product conveyors immediately after each buffering station, detect the presence of cheese portions as they pass underneath. An industry-standard PNP normally open output with an M8 connector ensures optimum flexibility. Additionally, IO-Link, a standardized point-to-point serial connection protocol for sensors and actuators, is enabled on PNP versions at no additional cost, offering the advantages of digital communication without the need for special cabling. A second output provides a stability alarm in the event of reduced sensitivity, flagging the need for preventative maintenance before any performance degradation occurs. Robust sensor construction, featuring miniature (20mm x 30mm x 10mm) plastic housings, ensures reliable operation in the demanding wash down environment; Contrinex C23 devices are rated to IP67. reflector require a perfectly defined background and accurate operating distances while the reachable operating fields are reduced. This is the reason why TRU-C23 photoelectric sensor works as a high-performing system with reflector. Thanks to a patented detection principle, the sensor offers high detection performances thus being able to also identify thin and clear objects. The sensor exploits a light source in the UV light spectrum, which bundles are absorbed from the glass or clear plastic. Miniature TRU-C23 photoelectric sensor exploits UV light and is suitable to detect clear objects, reliably. It also detects thinner clear objects The sensor’s operating range can be easily set-up, since clear materials like plastic or

glass absorb most of the polarized UV light. The shape or thickness of the measured object does not affect the measuring result. Dirt, water drops or aging also do not affect the measurement. Errors linked to multiple triggers for the same object are completely eliminated. The key feature for the measurement consists of a LED that emits polarised UV light and a reflector made in special material suitable for UV light. Overall, the sensor reaches an operating field around 1.000 mm. Typical application examples consist in detecting clear films or glass or clear plastic containers for the Food and Beverage Industry, or check the presence of bottles or phials in the pharmaceutical sector. Moreover, the sensor has also a good quality/price ratio.

or the conveying of thin walled tubular sections, such as beverage cans around the production process, chain specialist iwis offers a range of pin oven and tube transport chains. Which offers outstanding cost benefits.

Developed specifically for conveying drinks cans, iwis pin oven chains are extremely wear-resistant and feature precision roller chains fitted with transport pins and replaceable protective pin heads (Fig. 1). They allow thin-walled hollow bodies to be transported safely and reliably at high speeds at ambient or elevated temperatures with exposure to various media throughout the production process. Pin oven chains are used in the beverages industry and

wherever cans or other thin-walled hollow bodies need to be conveyed, printed, painted or dried. The standard chain size is M128ASL (ANSI 60, 12A-1). Other versions, for example with a corrosion-resistant coating or maintenance-free chains (ML and ML-2) are also available on request. In the standard configura-

tion every seventh pin is hollow to accept the transport pins. The chains can be tailored to include other pin spacings depending on the nature of the conveyed goods. The length of the transport pins can also be adapted and ranges from 184 mm to 214 mm in length from the chain’s longitudinal axis to the head. (Fig. 2: Ex-

ample of a POChain-I, dimension L). Flexible and easy to maintain The transport pins that hold the product are fitted in hollow chain pins at defined intervals and secured with self-locking nuts (POChain-P) or an additional lug and split pins (POChain-S). On models POChain-P and POChain-S, transport rods can be individually replaced in-situ - for example if they are

worn or damaged - by simply releasing the nut or removing the split pin. The chain does not need to be separated or removed from the machine, which saves maintenance time and ensures that the chain outlasts its attachment parts. Versions POChain-P and POChainS of the split pin oven chains also feature predefined fracture points in the transport pins that prevent damage in the event of a collision.

Compelling price/performance ratio The latest addition to iwis’ range of pin oven chains, which will be launched in June 2015, is labelled POChain-I and features a cost-optimized design and an excellent price/performance ratio. All versions of the POChain have spring-loaded protective heads on the transport pins to protect the conveyed hollow objects (Fig. 3). These heads are made from a high-temperature resis-

or beer, soft drink and mineral water manufacturers, the appearance of glass bottles is paramount wherever the drink is served: in bars, restaurants and stores. The look of bottles impacts the brand image and its commercial performance. Products developed by Arkema, Kercoat® and Opticoat®, dedicated in the protection of glass bottles, address this issue, and help bottlers extend the lifetime of their bottle fleet, with significant savings as a result. Explanations by Julien Verron, Global Business Manager Glass Coatings for Returnable bottles at Arkema. DRINK: What does your range of coatings for glass bottles entail? Julien Verron - Arkema offers a unique expertise in the returnable glass bottle coating market with two complementary product ranges: Kercoat®, which protects the bottles and keeps them looking new for longer, and Opticoat®, which

Without Opticoat® (left) / With Opticoat® (right) after 20 cycles

masks the scuffing and white rings that build up on bottles every cycle of use. Building on our 30 years’ experience in glass coatings, we were the first to launch this innovative solution some ten years ago. We noticed that, after a number of cycles of use, returnable bottles were becoming more fragile and losing their appeal to consumers. By ensuring that bottles retain an attractive look for a longer period of time, our products contribute to maintaining a positive impact on the buying act of final consumers.

D - Your solutions bank on the look of bottles, so aren’t they marketing products? J.V - Marketing experts know very well that the look of a bottle is very important to seduce consumers. Nowadays, with the growing number of cycles for returnable bottles, scuffing caused by repeated contact between bottles, in particular during filling and transport, is unavoidable. Any deterioration in their appearance can result in a significant loss of business. Our experience has shown us that after

CHILLED NFC JUICES: THE BERTUZZI APPROACH

T

he market of fruit juice is developing quite rapidly and the share of NFC juices is considerably increasing because of their high quality. In Europe and the US (but also in whole world) 100% juice (not from concentrate) category is showing a strong growth potential. Of particular importance, in this sector, are the chilled juice, fruit juices that are prepared directly from the fresh fruit and then are just chilled and filled or slightly pasteurized and chilled in order to retain all organolectic characteristics. The majority of the chilled juice found in the shops shelfs is based on orange but other varieties like pineapple, grapefruit, carrots as well as blends (orange-carrot, orange-pineapple, car-

rot-lemon-pineapple etc.) are becoming more and more popular. The main hints for the design of a plant processing fresh fruit into chilled juices are: • Optimization of flow of fruit/juice • Optimization of characteristics of process equipment • Optimization of processing cycles in order:

1. Decrease processing times 2. Minimize oxidation of the juice 3. Keep high organolectic characteristics • Optimize CIP system to control the microbiology of the juice. Some of the machines used for the application are dedicated for a certain type of fruit, for istance: - Dedicated citrus juice extractors (orange,

THE BEST MICROBREWERY IN THE WORLD INVESTS IN P.E. LABELLERS FOR FINE FINISHES

“A

person travelling from one place to another selling goods”: this is the meaning of a Hawker and it is precisely by wandering across the streets of Sydney and offering their products door to door that in February 2015 two partners, Joseph Abboud and Mazen Hajjar, decided to found Hawkers Beer, a microbrewery in Melbourne. In just two years the Australian company won over thirty awards in the most prestigious competitions of its category, even at an international level, with a product portfolio consisting of: Hawkers Pilsner, Hawkers IPA, Hawkers Pale Ale, Hawkers Saison and seasonal and limited editions. Hawkers’ strong suit is the high-tech innovation

of its systems that have led it to produce about 4 million litres of beer in a year, though the amount is not enough to meet the whole demand. The company is constantly expanding and decided to invest in cutting-edge machinery with the aim of soon reaching a production of 10 million litres of beer per year. A “world champion” beer needs fine finishes: the customer requested a professional application of transparent labels and in 2016 P.E. Labellers replied with the supply of a MODULAR PLUS 540 rotary labelling machine with servomotors and selfadhesive stations for front, back and neck

labels at a rate of 110 bpm. Up until now, the customer is fully satisfied with the P.E. labelling machine supplied, which offers 100% performance levels, as it doubled the productivity of the line in relation to the labelling machine used before. Hawkers chose P.E. Labellers’ labellers precisely because it always provides maximum application quality at any production speed. www.pelabellers.com

BS ERGON: the new EBS (Electronic Blowing System) ERGON series is the result of a challenging two-year long research & development project which introduced innovative concepts for the design and manufacture of SMI’s new machines. The first ERGON EBS model was presented to the sales network in October 2015 at the inauguration of the new showroom set up at the SMI headquarters in San Giovanni Bianco (Bergamo). The model EBS 10 ERGON has been exhibited at the K show in Düsseldorf last October 2016. The current ERGON EBS range includes 7 models, from 4 to 16 cavities, suitable for the production of PET containers up to 3 liters running at the max

speed of 2,300 bottles per hour per cavity for the 0.5-liter format (still water). There are also 3 HC models, from 3 to 6 cavities, for the production of containers up to 10 liters, running at the max speed of 1,200 bottles per hour per cavity for the 5-liter format.

stretching rods whose functioning is controlled by electronic drives with no need of mechanical cams. This new technology enables a precise descent of the stretching rod, an accurate control of its position and remarkable energy savings.

Moreover, this new technology enables to adjust the stretch-blowing speed without mechanical interventions (cams replacement), and also greatly reduces the vibration stress that the blow moulding carousel undergoes in the traditional

solutions. The ERGON EBS series also features high performance, low dead volume valves system which has reduced the pre-blowing and blowing times with the subsequent great advantage in terms of machine efficiency and quality of the final bottles. A fully “cam-free” stretch-blow moulding process Another important innovation implemented by SMI design engineers is the motorization of the mechanical mould unit that has turned the ERGON EBS stretch-blow moulders into a real “cam-free” system through its integration with the electronic stretching rod. This led to significant advantages in terms of greater kinematical accuracy, less maintenance, less vibration, less noise and longer system life. With only a single servomotor, the new configuration handles both the up & down movement of the bottom of the mould and the opening & closing of the mould-holding unit, greatly reducing mechanical stress and noise, which this machine section is subjected

The new preform heating module is equipped with heat-reflecting, high energy efficiency panels made of composite materials positioned both on the front and to the rear of the heat lamps in charge of preforms heating. This innovative solution ensures a high reflection of the heat generated by the lamps and its more uniform distribution on the preforms surface. Thanks to this new technology, the dead angle of the stretch-blow moulding carousel has been reduced by as much as 10° if compared to the previous range, making the structure much more compact. Furthermore, the mould-holder’s opening/ closing movement has now been optimized according to the effective diameter of the bottles to be produced. Since this leads to a gradual reduction of the opening/ closing stroke, the stretchblow moulding cycle is shorter as the container’s size decreases.

there is more space inside the machine for cleaning and maintenance, which the operator can perform easily and safely. The ergonomics of SMI’s new stretchblow moulders is further enhanced by the advanced technology used by the Motornet System® automation and control system, which ensures the constant keeping of optimal working parameters during the whole production cycle and directly adjusts the machine’s settings, simplifying format changeovers.

THE LEES StOP FIltER AND tHE OtHER INNOVAtIVE SOlUtIONS INtRODUCED BY VLS TECHNOlOGIES At SIMEI 2015 At the recent SIMEI 2015 VLS Technologies introduced, together with other new solutions for liquid treatment, the “Lees Stop”, an innovative technological solution for filtering products with high content in solids: this solution was awarded wth the prize “SIMEI New Technology 2015”. “We are talking about it with Mr. Jacopo Velo”.

ould you give us a brief overwiev on VLS Technologies? What I usually say to make people briefly understand who we are is that “VLS Technologies is the new technological partner for liquid processing… with a 30-years experience on it!” With that I mean that, from our perspective, it is possible to match both “innovation”/ “freshness” and experience and, at the end of the day, this is what we try to do; even if our expertise dates back to 1985, we try everyday to build innovative forms of partnership with our

expansion both in EU and in extra-European countries and in 2002 the “second generation”, represented by me and my brother Tommaso, entered the Company. I believe that now VLS represents the costant innovation in the sector; a Company that, regardHow have you evolved less of current economic conditions, made strong since 1985? Now you have one less problem The filtration of products with high content in solids has always been considered a problem. This is now a thing of the past! VLS Technologies presents Lees-Stop, a solution for cross flow filtration through sintered stainless steel membranes with high mechanical and chemical resistance. A cross flow solution together with sintered stainless steel, that lasts in time.

What is new with the “Lees Stop”? The lees Stop is an “ad hoc” solution meant for filtering products with hing content in solids that replaces the traditional polymeric membranes of the cross flow filters with sinterized stainless steel membranes. Sinterization is a thermal process to which stainless steel powders undergo. High temperatures “weld” these powders together by heating them below their melting point. Thanks to several tests, we have verifired that this kind of material perfectly fits the cross flow filtration of difficult to treat products leading to products on the outlet with concentration up to 95% V/V. What are the advantages of this solution? Sintered Stainless Steel has a structure that guarantees high mechanical and chemical resistance that translates to high resistance to pressure, thermal shocks, impacts and chemical washing with high PH. Therefore a solution that lasts over time. The Lees Stop also allows the filtration of a broad range of products, from lees to industrial waste: in

BOTTLING

example, very good results have been achieved with producers of juices. If we take in consideration the knocking down of costs connected to disposal, the high quality of the filtrate, the full automation and the economical comeback from waste of the process, “Lees Stop” really represents the ultimate solution for who needs to filter efficiently and in innovative way products with and high content in solids.

turbidity inferior to 1 NTU. For those reasons VLS has created “UNICO”. Thanks to our filter it is possible to reach a perfect filtration of the product and shoot down the microbiological flora meanwhile saving the organoleptic characteristics or improving them sometimes. The filtering media that we are using can stand repeated regenerations with hot water and detergents and that means a long lifespan. Do you look only to the winemaking industry or to other sectors too? Absolutely to other sectors too. In example our PLUMA filter, another news introduced at SIMEI, is expressly meant for producers of fruit juices. Companies that need to filter their juices want to make sure of preserving their organoleptic characteristics by achieving an optimal filtration with a optimal microbiological shotdown. That is why VLS Technologies has created the PLUMA filter. Thanks to our microfiltration plant it is possible to reach an optimal filtration of the product and shoot down the microbiological flora. As for UNICO, the filtration media we use on the PLUMA filter can stand repeated regenerations with hot water and

detergents and thus achieve long lifespan. We have also introduced a new cooling plant for the cold stabilization of distillates and spirits. Quite always, after diluition, distillates like grappa, rum, brandy, cognac overgo cooling at temperatures inferior to 0°C depending on the alcoholic degree so to provoke the insolubility of oily substances that can affect the quality of the product and admit their asportation thanks to cold filtration. It is also guaranteed the subsistence of clearness at every condition and temperature to which the product is subjected during the cycle of distribution, storage and service. The VLS plant outstands for reliability, ease of use and cheapness of exercise. Reliability be-

BOTTLING

cause it is based on a system of refrigeration thanks to steam compression already tested on several applications in the beverage industry; it uses a scraped self cleaning surface evaporator that assures continuous operation and costant perfomance. Ease of use because, once turned on, the plant can work for several days without needing an operator to be there; it is supplied with instrumentation and automation that constantly check the operating parameters and assure the values by automatically intervening should variations of the product on the inlet or lack of it call the need for it. Cheapness of exercise because, as already stated, the system can operate without the presence of the operator; for the low installed power required; mostly for the presence of a plate heat recovering system that can recover about the 75% of the requested calories by getting them from the product already filtered and stabilized that comes from the outlet of the filter that is in the system and that would anyway need to be warmed before bottling.

Very high productivity and automation in the wash meet in the HP model in the same series. Despite the sophistication, just an operator to remotely manage the entire wash cycle, verifying operation via control systems. The tubes of external washing are constructed so as to reduce maintenance to a minimum. But in case it will be necessary, the dismantling and cleaning are very simple. The regulation of the temperature in the tanks is automated through

a modulating proportional pneumatic system, which offers a guarantee of accuracy and safety of operation. The main motor, oversized, ensures a long lasting efficiency by minimizing the mechanical wear. The electronic variable frequency allows to manage the main engines installed in HYDRA HP series via remote control. The automatic press for the collection of labels evacuated from the detergent bath is full of a recovery system of the detergent solution that accumulates in the pressing phase.

he roots of MORRONE FOOD TECH (M.F.T. srl) date back to 1946 when Mr Giulio Raiola, Maurizio Morrone’s grandfather, started manufacturing foodprocessing machinery. During his first 40 years of activity, Giulio Raiola’s company establishes itself as leader manufacturer of processing equipment for the canning industry, namely tomato and peach processing. In the early 90’s Mr Raiola develops the first models of his peeler for apples, pears, citrus and kiwis, besides fruit cutters and other pieces of equipment that allow him to expand the company’s core business to the whole fruit-process-
