SEAL IN THE FRESHNESS WITH SOLUTIONS FROM LINPAC PACKAGING
L
INPAC Packaging, Europe’s leading multi-material packaging manufacturer, gave a detailed insight into emerging global trends affecting the food supply chain and its related sectors at its first Fresh! seminar of 2013 in Verona. The Fresh! seminar brought together experts from industry and academic institutions to present the latest thinking on packaging and how the sector will be affected by the changing social, economic, political and technological landscape. Delegates heard from Cristiano Madama, General Manager LINPAC Verona, Giuseppe Montaguti, Vice President & Managing Director INFIA & Italy, Fabio Zoboli, Commercial Director at INFIA and Joanna Stephenson, Vice President Marketing and Innovation at LINPAC, who all discussed how the company is responding to changes in society through design and technological innovation. Dr James Walsh from Liverpool University in the UK considered plasma treatment of food whilst Guido Pietrobelli from Omori looked at trends and developments in packaging machinery. Cristiano Madama, General Manager at LINPAC Verona, said: “Packaging plays a crucial role in the minimisation of food waste and the sale of food through its ability to attract customers to make initial and repeat purchases of food items. As a result, businesses have to respond to the global competition, changing populations and changing consumer behaviours that present a real challenge to the food industry. These seminars focus on these key
LINPAC FP 4/13.indd 3
ideas through its impressive line-up of experts from industry and academic institutions.” The Italian seminar is the first of six to be held across Europe this year. Future events are planned for Spain, Poland, United Kingdom, France and Holland. At the seminar, Alan Davey, Director of Innovation at LINPAC, also introduced a host of new packaging solutions which have just been launched in the Italian market. These included LINfresh® Atmo 5 and
6, LINseal and LINseal Plus®, both ranges for the meat and fish sector, and LeanBake®, an assortment of lightweight trays for morning goods such as croissants, Danish pastries, tarts and muffins.
LINfresh® Atmo 5 and 6 LINPAC Packaging has extended its range of low carbon, warm touch, foam trays for meat and fish products in the Italian market. New manufacturing capabilities at their site in Verona has enabled the
09/07/13 10.02
food packaging company to launch the LINfresh Atmo® 5 and 6 ranges in Italy which have proved popular with food processors, packers and retailers in other European countries. The move ensures that Italian customers will have direct access to these popular LINPAC Packaging innovations which are ideal for pre-packed meat and fish. LINfresh Atmo 5 and 6 are designed for top sealed modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and combine low carbon EPS with barrier technology which helps to extend the shelf life of food by up to 300% when compared with traditional non-MAP packaging methods. The trays have strong environmental credentials; the extended shelf life factor means they help to reduce food waste and as they are made from 95% air the trays have the lightest carbon footprint on the market today, reducing manufacturers’ and retailers’ impact on the environment. When used in conjunction with LINPAC Packaging’s complementary lidding film LINtop PE HB, customers have the ultimate tray/film combination, giving excellent performance in terms of shelf life, presentation and protection for their meat and fish products. Cristiano Madama, Managing Director at LINPAC Verona said: “The LINfresh Atmo 5 and 6 trays complement our existing portfolio of foam EPS trays for protein foods, enabling us to offer our customers the best solutions for their needs. Our LINfresh Atmo range increases shelf life by several days thanks to its barrier technology, keeping food fresher for longer and ultimately reducing food waste. If we also factor in the environmental qualities of EPS – lightweight and low carbon – and the merits of outstanding product protection and presentation, the LINfresh Atmo range is an exceptionally efficient choice for customers.”
LINPAC FP 4/13.indd 4
LINseal® and LINseal® Plus LINPAC Packaging’s new LINseal® and LINseal® Plus foam trays are also now available to Italian retailers and food processors. Both are suitable for tray sealing at high speed and have built-in tamper proofing to improve food safety and security – a key issue with standard overwrap films and trays. The LINsea®l trays are a new alternative for short shelf life foam packaging whilst offering a longer shelf life than standard EPS trays and films when incorporating a modified or controlled atmosphere, helping retailers, packers and processors minimise food waste in the supply chain. To create a more attractive pack to appeal to consumers and boost sales in the supermarket, the trays come in an array of shapes and colours and deliver ‘warm touch’ packaging. Additionally, the LINseal® Plus solution has been designed with a technologically advanced absorbent core to soak up unsightly meat juices. Joanna Stephenson, Vice President Marketing and Innovation at LINPAC said: “The LINseal trays are a cost effective solution for short shelf life
protein packaging. Clever pack design will help our customers reduce food waste and damage in store and during transit, and additional smart features like built-in tamper evidence and the absorbent core in LINseal Plus mean we are offering a real, good value, alternative to other available foam products.” LINPAC Packaging offers a range of compatible films so that customers gain optimum performance from their trays and have the peace of mind which comes with using one supplier to create the ultimate pack solution. Like other foam products from LINPAC Packaging, the LINseal trays have strong environmental credentials; made from 95% air, they are one of the lightest solutions on the market, significantly reducing transportation costs and the carbon footprints of both manufacturer and retailer.
LeanBake® LINPAC Packaging’s new range of hinged bakery boxes for morning goods are lighter than previous designs to help ease the eco-tax burden on retailers and manufacturers across Europe.
09/07/13 10.02
The LeanBake® range, which comprises both hermetic (airtight) and semi-hermetic boxes, doesn’t compromise on functionality or product protection and will appeal to those looking for a packaging solution which has a low carbon footprint. The European bakery market is currently worth circa €17.8bn and is forecast to grow by 9.5% to around €19.5bn by 2016. Ideal for croissants, Danish pastries, tarts and muffins, the LeanBake range is available in a range of sizes which can be easily displayed on-shelf. The containers have a premium appearance to enhance product value through better presentation and have been designed to help keep products fresh and tasty. The hermetic boxes have been developed especially for spongebased products to keep moisture within the pack so that they stay
fresher for longer, whilst standard boxes are slightly vented on three sides to allow air to circulate and ensure that pastry products such as croissants and Danish pastries retain their crispiness. Megan Ashcroft, European Bakery Marketing Manager at LINPAC Packaging, said: “The technical innovation which has gone into their design enables the containers to be lighter than our previous hinged box designs without affecting the pack’s rigidity and protective qualities, ensuring bakery items are not damaged during transit and so that consumers can enjoy their pastry as it was when first bought in-store. “This is something which bakers and manufacturers have been asking for, to minimise their costs and impact on the environment. As a leading European packaging manufacturer, LINPAC Packaging
is committed to listening to its customers and working with them to ensure we deliver a product which addresses and responds to their concerns and needs.” Particular attention has been paid to the design of the LeanBake range so that the boxes stack easily and uniformly to assist in the production process. The design also ensures that there is even distribution of material to maintain product quality and also the excellent visibility associated with PET which is required for bakery products to tempt consumers to purchase. LINPAC Packaging has also ensured that the design of the corner radius is such that it assists with the opening of the packs, improving ease of use for the consumer, and the external dimensions of the boxes have been adapted so that they fit on the standard European pallet.

ERADICATING IRREGULAR METAL FRAGMENTS FROM YOUR FOOD PRODUCTION LINE
By jonathan richards, marketing manager, mettler-toledo safeline metal detection
I
n recent years a number of food manufacturers have had to recall their products due to metal contamination, garnering strong, global media coverage and damaging their reputations. In this age of automated manufacturing equipment and increased food safety guidelines, how is it possible for a contamination incident to go undetected? Metal contaminants come in all sizes with their irregularly-shaped forms causing the most common product recalls. One major cause is that modern food and pharmaceutical production lines are making extensive use of automated, high-speed processing systems to increase their productivity so that they can meet growing demand for products, such as ready meals. However, this rise in the use of processing machinery can lead to an increased risk of contamination from metal. Manufacturers in both industries need be able to trust the processing systems and the product inspection technology on their production lines to protect their businesses and their brands from the cost and damage of product recalls. Typically, the greatest metal contaminant risk to food production lines comes from irregularly shaped fragments such as wire, slivers of metal and “swarf”, also known as filings, caused by broken processing machinery or bodies that have entered the production line with the raw ingredients. These irregularly shaped contaminants can be difficult to detect using conventional inspection sy-
METTLER TOLEDO FP 4/13.indd 3
stems, especially when the size of the foreign body is very small. Nonspherical metals such as wire can be detected more easily when passing perpendicularly to the detector search head than when passing lengthways, a phenomenon known as the “orientation effect”. This is due to the wire possessing a larger profile in one orientation than the other, increasing the likelihood that the detector will identify the electrical current induced in the metal. However, typical metal contaminant test cards used to determine that the detector is working at optimum efficiency contain spherical samples, which would possess no orientation effect. One effective solution to overcome the orientation effect is to use two or three metal detector search heads in series on the production line, all of which can be set at different angles to the conveyor. As a result, the orientation of the contaminant relative to each detector changes, maximising the likelihood of detection. The metal detectors’ maximum level of sensitivity needs to be such that it can detect a foreign body’s width at its narrowest point to ensure it can be safely removed from the production process. In addition, manufacturers can improve the likelihood of contaminant detection by carefully considering where to best install the metal detector according to the results of a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) audit, the detection frequency range of the metal detector and also the size of the aperture
to be used. In many cases, manufacturers may know the size of contaminant they are trying to detect. For example, in the pharmaceutical industry, the greatest contamination risk comes from broken sieve wires. As manufacturers are aware of the diameter of the wire used in the sieves on their production lines, they can specify a minimum level of metal detector sensitivity to the product inspection system supplier when commissioning a new detection system. The new metal detector can then be tested by the supplier’s research and development (R&D) team to ensure it is capable of identifying the specific sieve wire type even in its most challenging orientation. No matter what the cause, product recall announcements can significantly harm a brand’s reputation and erode profits. To avoid this, manufacturers must ensure their inspection systems are capable of identifying irregularly and regular shaped contaminants.

EASY CLOSING - PAYNE SEEKS TO RESOLVE THE ISSUES
A
re you a user or a hoarder? A scoffer or a nibbler? Do you share your sweets or eat the lot yourself? Is small beautiful or do you prefer to buy in bulk? Packaging solutions specialist Payne is launching a Facebook campaign to find out what people think about reclosable packs. Research has suggested that a third of consumers would pay more for the convenience of being able to reseal certain types of packs and Payne is keen to understand some of the driving forces behind purchasing decisions. “As packaging professionals, we recognise the benefits of reclosability in terms of portion control, product protection and reduced waste,” says Payne Managing Director Martin Dallas. “However, consumers can sometimes surprise us with the reasons for the choices they make and we want to get to the heart of what they consider to be good packaging
PAYNE FP 4/13.indd 3
and why. “For example, if you buy a larger bag of confectionery, is the ability to reseal it and save it for later a key reason for choosing the pack? How many people take advantage of this feature, and how many eat the entire contents in one go? “On a more serious note, what types of products would consumers like to see in packs that are easier to reseal? Is being able to buy in larger sizes and save the contents important? Is this a more convenient way to shop?” Feedback is being requested through Payne’s Packaging Resolved Facebook page, where the company seeks to engage with consumers to promote the many benefits of good packaging and identify areas where there is room for further improvement. The company’s initial research into consumer attitudes to packaging has already identified that consumers tend to respond positively to
packaging that is fit for purpose, with opening, closing, protecting and informing being some of the main elements of many successful and popular packs. “As an industry, we are quite rightly focused on delivering sustainable benefits but our research showed that frustrations and difficulties in opening packs are of more concern to many consumers than environmental considerations,” says Martin Dallas. “Similarly, while reclosable packs offer tremendous benefits in terms of reducing food waste and raw material consumption and we need to explain these benefits to consumers, it is also important to understand what else concerns them and how as an industry we can effectively respond to this. Through our Packaging Resolved Facebook page we hope to obtain some initial feedback and data that we can research and develop further.”

EQUIPMENT FOR THE DAIRY INDUSTRY AND FOR SOFT DRINKS, JUICES AND BEVERAGES
P
ietribiasi Michelangelo was established between the end 1960 and the beginning of the next decade. From the beginning the family-run company specialized in the construction of equipment for the dairy industry and developed later into the field of soft drinks, juices and beverages in general. Today the Pietribiasi name is among the more well-known in the dairy and beverages sector and the company is internationally acknowledged, particularly in the realisation of “turn-key” projects, and in the specific processing sectors, such as production of cheeses, pasteurisation and packaging ones. Looking more closely at the company’s product ranges, the Pietribiasi division covers the research, project design and supply of complete systems for the process of milk (HTST – HHTST – ESL – UHT), cream – fermented products from milk process (yoghurts in the various known versions, sour cream, Smetana, kefir, leben, etc.), fresh soft cheeses, as well semi and hard cheeses, “pasta filata-pizza cheese” (such as mozzarella, kashkaval, etc.) and other products processed from cow – sheep and goat milks. In this field the company has a wide experience and can cover all equipment needs from small to bigger plants for the production of: pasteurized drinking milk, yoghurt, different kinds of cheese, butter, etc. Pietribiasi designs and produces plate and tubular heat exchanger for pasteurization and thermal treatment (cooling and/or heating) of different liquid foods (milk, cream, ice-cream mix, fruit juice, eggs mixture, beer, wine and many others).

THE FLEXIBLE STAND UP POUCH: AN IDEAL PACKAGE STYLE FOR SNACKS
S
nack products (nuts, dried fruits, cookies etc…) are one of the most popular products in today’s supermarkets, and represent a strong selling item in the store. They can be strategically positioned in the store for quick point of purchase, like end of aisle or check out register to engage impulse buying habits by consumers. The type and design of the package is very important to attract the attention of the consumer. The Stand Up Pouch is used more frequently
BOSSAR FP 2/13.indd 3
for packaging of snacks due to its functionality as well as its attractiveness and platform for different design formats. By “standing out” more on the shelf, the product better differentiates itself from the competition on the shelf, and provides the consumer at home with benefit of a stable storage feature, factors that contribute to why consumers opt more and more to purchase snack brands in this package style. In order to maintain and guarantee product freshness and safety, the
product should be packed on a high quality filling machine. Freshness and quality can be enhanced with use of a modified atmosphere system, utilizing nitrogen to lower the amount of residual oxygen inside the pouch, yet without changing any flavor or texture of the product. As a general rule, a multihead combination weigh scale system is used to weigh fill the product as accurately as possible and to reduce product give away. Once the product is released from
03/07/13 16.34
the weigh scale it is transitioned through transfer funnels where nitrogen can be flushed as product enters the pouch, and an expanding duck bill style funnel helps to open the pouch wide enough to ensure product enters pouch without jamming or interference. This duck bill also flushes nitrogen into the pouch to lower the residual oxygen inside the package. Once filled, the pouch indexes to the pouch closing and sealing stations. In the pouch closing or stretching station, additional nitrogen can be injected into the pouch to evacuate more oxygen from the pouch headspace. The package film material used is typically a multi-layer laminate of barrier materials with a film thickness specific to each application. For example, for a one time use salty snack pouch, the film thickness is usually in region of 60 microns thick and could be a PET 12 micron / PE 50 micron laminate. The film should not be too thick or it will add to the overall package cost, as well as create a need to increase seal temperature and pressure in the machine.
BOSSAR FP 2/13.indd 4
For larger size pouches with larger amounts of product inside, a recloseable zipper can be added to the pouch so that it can be used for multi-use occasions and also to help preserve the product quality inside the pouch. In such cases, it might be recommended to increase film thickness, especially the PE layer while maintaining the same thickness of the external PET layer. Some film structure examples might be PET 12 micron / PE 70 micron, or a PET 12 micron / PE 100 micron, depending on the product type. An aluminum layer can also be added, typically 9 microns thick, for a 3 layer film. A combination of PET12/ALU9/PE80 is a common film structure that ensures package integrity and product safety. In cases where cost reduction is important, the aluminum film layer can be substituted by a metallized film between the PET outer layer and PE inner sealant layer. Technological innovations in more complex films have allowed improvements to the time, pressure and temperature functions, allowing sealing systems to meet or exceed quality requirements.
Snack applications typically have a high content of salt. For such applications, it is advisable that the machine construction design be made of corrosion resistant materials such as stainless steel AISI 304 and AISI 316, titanium and even certain plastics that are saline resistant. Without such a construction, the machine will not withstand long term use or rigorous cleaning procedures. Machinery that is entirely constructed using servo drive control mechanisms with built in monitoring programs, allows a far greater control of each machine function due to each motion having its own independently controlled axis. Independent control of each axis (as opposed to a single line axis for all functions) allows flexibility to adjust each critical machine function, such as sealing time, sealing pressure, filling time, simply by adjusting the design of the electronic cams. This offers a more user friendly way to improve the pouch forming and filling process, and ultimately result in a higher level of guarantee to produce a quality product.

MOCON PARTNERS WITH AUSTRALIA’S INSPECTION SYSTEMSTO CREATE NEW CERTIFIED PACKAGE-TESTING LAB
M
OCON, Inc. (NASDAQ: MOCO) and Inspection Systems, Melbourne, Australia have partnered to establish a certified lab for permeation, seal strength and leak detection testing for food and pharmaceutical packaging structures. Inspection Systems, a respected supplier of inspection and testing instruments and services, with locations in Australia and New Zealand, has created a separate entity, IS Laboratories, Melbourne, to support the partnership. Its mission is to provide food and pharmaceutical companies with fast and affordable testing services using MOCON’s gold-standard instrumentation. IS Laboratories becomes the first MOCON-certified test facility in Australia and the eighth MOCON-certified lab in the world. “Up until now, companies in this part of the world who did not have access to MOCON instrumentation in their own facilities would either have to send their products to other countries for testing or attempt to find a small laboratory which typically has limited capability. We are pleased to announce the establishment of this new laboratory with its wide range of testing options,” said Brad Grubb, director, Inspection Systems. IS Laboratory capabilities include: oxygen, water vapor and carbon dioxide permeation testing; burst and pressure strength testing, as well as pressure decay. Over the past several years, MOCON has been actively pursuing strategic laboratory partnerships in key manufacturing regions around the world. Its objective is to offer affordable permeation testing services globally at laboratories which have been certified by the company. The MOCON-certified laboratory network targets a broad range of com-
MOCON FP 4/13.indd 3
panies ranging from multinational corporations, which would benefit from a local facility capable of duplicating gold-standard testing protocols, to smaller firms which may only have need for a few validation tests per year. Certification means that the state-ofthe-art instrumentation has been installed, inspected and is maintained by a MOCON-factory authorized service technician and that the laboratory staff has been trained on MOCON corporate test lab methods/protocols and record keeping to ensure quality and equivalency. “MOCON certification assures that companies using any one of these facilities will get the same level of service and quality they would find at any other MOCON-certified location
anywhere in the world,” said Alan Shema, product manager for consulting and testing services, MOCON. “This is ideal for multinational companies which can now be assured that their materials or packages are tested using identical standards and protocols on four different continents.”Additionally, for Australia/New Zealand companies interested in purchasing MOCON instrumentation for their own facility, IS Laboratories gives them a chance to demo instrumentation in a geographically-convenient location before committing to a purchase. MOCON certified laboratories can now be found in the United States, Germany, China, India, Canada, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Australia.

NOW PLASTICS EUROPE THE VIRTUAL FACTORY YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO LIVE WITHOUT
Some things in life seem to defy logic, until you go one layer deeper and then it makes complete sense. NOW Plastics (North America, UK and Europe) is such a case. Let me try to explain a bit further.
I
n the packaging industry, the world has gotten a lot smaller. Today’s technologies (internet, email, universal translators, etc.) makes it possible to have email discussions between two people who live on opposite ends of the world, are many time zones apart, and speak totally different languages. So, anyone can buy direct from overseas manufacturers all day long, right?. Then, how has NOW Plastics business model, as a global importer/distributor/supplier and “virtual factory” of various types of plastic films and certain converted products not only survived, but has been thriving, in today’s global environment???? Simple. The secret is that NOW Plastics Business Model was designed to take away the uncertainty associated with Global Importation while opening up the entire global supply landscape at the service of its customers. As the experienced procurement manager well knows, buying films is not just about procuring some sheet of plastic that looks nice and clear at a great price and throw it on a machine. All films are not alike even if they appear alike. field costing 20 to 50 million euros and their supply must be totally dependable. Converters buy films as their main raw materials, and perform many different processes also involving other chemicals such as inks, adhesives, applying heat in laminations and bag making. Wrong films and unreliable supply lead to bad results and financial losses.
THE VIRTUAL FACTORY MODEL Now Plastics is a virtual factory. We have people and offices. But we do not have equipment (with the exception of some slitting and perforating equipment in the UK for fast response on certain products). We have a seemingly unlimited capacity of our core film products (see our advertisement on another page) via our producing partners to provide to our customers, mainly converters in soft as well as tight
markets. Our goal is to bring value to you. We are not worried about filling out machines that need to run 24 hours. We are your long arm, ears and eyes. We are globally connected to film producers all around the world, with preferences of course as not all producers are created equal. That is one of our advantages. You get the benefit of 35 years of supplying overseas products into our domestic markets.
A BIT OF HISTORY Our experiences and knowledge base began in North America, an extremely tough market, where changing or adding new suppliers is a complicated and time consuming task. Perfect education and training for the EU markets which

have different but equally tough requirements. We started Now Plastics UK in 2001 as a prelude to working in Europe. In 2009, we created local sales and logistic offices in Italy and Spain with technical support, developed a European invoicing system and VAT no’s and in the process learned a lot! Now, with this added experience, we are expanding further with representation now in France and Poland, and soon in Germany and other places. Europe is more complicated but we adapt well and we prefer to do things right and not just grow uncontrolled. Our reputation is the most important asset we have.
WHAT WE DO Now Plastics is many things. We are an extension of your procurement department with a wealth of experience and knowledge to share. We have a multiplicity of supply options for our basket of film products. We learn your business and philosophies and then, based on a variety of factors beyond price, we marry certain factories who we know well to certain customers after learning their needs. And as we assume a more responsible role in your business as a primary supplier, we insist of creating certain supply chain programs – such as multiple sourcing per product, local warehousing for safety stock or Just-in-Time stock management via
now plastics FP 4/13.indd 4
either a full warehouse program, or consignment programs or other hybrid supply type programs. We insist because it is our job to manage risks, and buying films from offshore has huge benefits but some risks and those risks (late deliveries mainly) need to be mitigated. We manage open orders far better than factories do themselves. We see changes happening in the markets and do our best to alert our customers to be prepared. We are transparent – we do not hide our supply sources and we transfer our knowledge and our level of confidence to you. We are your eyes and ears. We find ways to differentiate ourselves and to make a difference in your business. Over the long haul, we deliver the best overall value to your business. If we didn’t, we would not exist in this highly competitive market, let alone be growing quite nicely. And maybe most importantly – WE ARE HERE TO STAY. Now Plastics is not a here today, gone tomorrow phenomenon (those of you who remember the tight polyester market of 2010/2011 know what I am talking about!).
VETTING OF FACTORIES Vetting of factories is a critical function. We do not buy sight unseen. We visit factories regularly, typically at least once a year, but sometimes more. It’s a lot of travel but it is important. Skype is nice but not a
substitute for face to face meetings and relationship building. There is not enough space allotted for a full discussion but some of our criteria are: ISO approval, EU food contact approvals, a serious management, technical sophistication, a focus toward export, long term thinking, an expansion strategy, financial stability, western thinking, product warranties and honoring claims, commercial flexibility, and the ability to maintain good relations and mutual support though soft and tight markets. The last item is high on the importance list. The true test is how a factory behaves when we need them, not when they need us.
THE ADVANTAGES OF NOW PLASTICS We bring a multitude of advantages to the table: you cannot substitute for experience and we have 35 years of it, a proven track record and reputation, financial stability, a long term orientation, global mindedness, the ability to craft customized supply chains, multiplicity of supply coupled with full transparency, local support, customer orientation, leveraging of your time by making importation easy for you, logistics management. And most of all, we are strategic thinkers and business people, something you do not get with the normal sales representation from most factories.

CUTTING-EDGE FILLING TECHNOLOGY FOR BEVERAGE MANUFACTURERS ABF Aseptic in 12 grams Exhibits on the stand will include the innovative ABF (Aseptic Blow Fill) system consisting of the market’s first aseptic blow moulding machine for PET bottles with an integrated aseptic filler and capper. The system sterilizes the perform with VHP - vaporized hydrogen peroxide without the need for rinsing, then blow moulds the performs to create aseptic bottles. The sterile bottles are then filled in the normal way. An 48,000 bph on 500 ml format ABF system will be on show on the GEA Group stand. The ABF system has been successfully validated to fill milk and milk-based products, teas and juices. It offers the utmost in safe sterilization performance with the minimum use of plastic material. This ability will be illustrated with the introduction of a new 12g PET bottle, specifically designed by GEA Procomac for the aseptic filling market.
A new cap sterilizer and a new mono–column type palletizer without pusher GEA Procomac will also introduce the Sterilcap VHP machine for plastic caps sterilization at drinktec, developed to allow just one sterilizing agent to be used for the whole system. The newest feature of Sterilcap VHP is the opportunity to sterilize both flat and sport caps without performing any change of format while maintaining the system sterility. The system represents the perfect cap sterilization system when coupled with the GEA Procomac ABF (Aseptic Blow Fill) which permits the use of one single chemical sterilizer during production. Artis EVO palletization technology will also be on the stand. It is a low-level, infeed palletizer with an innovative layer management system that eliminates the need for a pusher thereby keeping production
GEA FP 4/13.indd 3
speeds high (six layers a minute) while reducing maintenance costs and footprint.
New trends: beverages with fruit pieces GEA Procomac will be showing its Aseptic Dual Filling System for the filling of PET bottles with products containing particulates (up to 10mm3). The system has two separate filling carousels: the new aseptic piston doser PX for solid particles with set volume from 30 to 150 ml and the volumetric electronic filler Fillstar FX, an industry standard for aseptic beverages filling. Filling of the bottles takes place in two operations: first the dosing of the solid particles; then the addition of the liquid phase. The dual fill system requires a two-stream process line: one dedicated to the thermal treatment of the pieces and the other to the thermal treatment of the clear liquid. A test rig of the new dosing valve will be on show.
Liquid Dairy products bottling As a recognised leader for the filling of sensitive beverages into plastic bottles, able to sterilize both bottles and preforms, GEA Procomac is now developing a brand new range of filling machines for PE and HDPE bottles for fresh and ESL liquid dairy products. The new range of machines features an innovative, flexible neck-handling system, able to eliminate downtime caused by format changeovers; and a high speed application of caps and aluminium foil closures. Discover more on the stand.
Improved line efficiency GEA Procomac After Sales Service personnel will be on the stand at drinktec to explain all the activities part of the Service offering such as: Preventive
Maintenance Program, Line Efficiency Consulting Service, Maintenance Kit, Upgrades and Retrofits, Customer Training, and a new approach to Total Preventive Maintenance aimed specifically at improving line efficiency.
Aseptic filling, in a book A second edition, updated and revised edition of Inside Aseptic, a guide to aseptic technology written to provide information regarding diverse aspects of aseptic technology, will be released on the stand.
How ABF works In the GEA Procomac ABF system, preforms are heated in the oven before being sterilized with an H2O2 steam process. Internal and external surfaces of the preforms are sterilized simultaneously and preforms are then blown by an aseptic blow moulder. The aseptic blow moulder is crucial as, once sterilized, the preform needs to be maintained as such. The blow moulding machine sterilization is performed by Hydrogen Peroxide steam, which also sterilizes all air pipes and stretching rod housings. A magnetic joint moves the stretching rods to enable them to stay in the aseptic environment created by a Microbiological Isolator. Sterilizing the preform instead of a bottle avoids thermal shock to the bottle and allows the use of less material thereby creating lighter bottles. This saves PET and helps to reduce transportation costs. ABF guarantees up to 6 log reductions (log6) in terms of microbiological decontamination and it allows the production of both High Acid (HA) and Low Acid (LA) beverages with a maximum output of 48.000 bph. ABF minimizes water and steam consumption, saves space and allows a significant reduction in bottle weight.

alone module for packhouse operations. This basic system with manual in-feed is perfectly suited for low cost packing of various products.
ICEBERG PACKING SOLUTIONS The VePack P-series has been originally designed for Iceberg Lettuce . The systems can also be used for the packaging of Broccoli, Cauliflower, Me¬lons and other Fruit& vegetables.
Each specially developed packing film has been optimized for optimal processing and maximum shelf life. The packing system combines an innovative packing design (closed but breathable, tight packing with seal at the butt) with an efficient and modular machine concept. With a single unit, one person can clean & pack up to 17 products per minute. The capacity can be scaled up in a modular way. With a complete harvesting rig, up to almost 120 heads per minute can be packed and handled in the field. The VePack 200-PH is the stand
SGORBATI FP 4/13.indd 3
The VePack 200-PHH is equipped with a compact automated, horizontal in-feed system (rotating table). This in-feed works as a “buffer”, giving the operator the possibility to reach maximum capacity. The VePack 200PHV has a vertical in-feed system. The standard version (VePack 200-PHV 16-5) has 16 cups (5 of 5 on the bottom part of the in-feed). This system is around 190 cm wide, and perfect for max. 2 operators.
Grading (by hand) is easy to integrate in the process. Our VePack S and VeSort operation can provide you the same packing quality, but with labor cost savings of at least 80%. And one VeSort grading line can very much simplify your grading operation! We can guarantee lowest packing costs with good shelf life properties. If you are looking for superior shelf life, we now also can offer you a special “NicePack” solution for Broccoli! KEY TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCES NEW STANDARD ISO-FLO® VIBRATORY CONVEYORS Hygienic Design Options also Introduced for Other Iso-Flo® Conveyors
K
ey Technology introduces a new standard Iso-Flo® conveyor and hygienic options for all other Iso-Flo vibratory conveyors at its Pack Expo Las Vegas booth #S-6911. Featuring dozens of enhancements that improve equipment sanitation and reduce maintenance, implementing these innovations on the popular Standard Utility Shaker enables Key to offer affordable pricing and fast four week delivery while helping customers maximize food safety and reduce the cost of maintenance. New hygienic features that enhan-
ce the Iso-Flo conveyor’s sanitary design include oil-free electric vibrating motors, an innovative patent-pending vector lock screen clamp, elastomer isolators, scalloped flat bars, plate frame design, and a unique internal ground arm. Established features that continue to be incorporated on Iso-Flo conveyors include a choice of stainless steel bed finishes that resist bacteria growth and are easy to clean and long-lasting StrongArm™ spring arms that minimize maintenance. “Iso-Flo has long been recognized as the premium vibratory conveyor for its superior sanitation and reliability. By further improving the hygienic design, it’s even easier to clean and there is less to maintain,” said Tyrone Foster, Process Systems
Product Manager at Key Technology. “These enhancements will help processors reduce the risk of product contamination, improve sanitation, meet rising government guidelines for food safety, and decrease exposure to product liability claims, all while reducing the cost of maintenance.” Key’s Standard Utility Shakers are ideal for processing fruits, vegetables, potato strips, and potato chips. The new hygienic features, standard on the Utility Shakers, are options on other Iso-Flo conveyors, which are used for conveying, grading, product distribution on processing and packaging lines, product alignment, fines removal, scalping, inspection, and more in plants producing meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, confectionary, snack, and bakery products as well as cereals, grains, and seeds in addition to fruits, vegetables, and potato strips and chips. Iso-Flo’s new energy unit is an oil-free electric vibrating motor that, compared to traditional mechanical drives, eliminates the gear box, drive belts, and motor oil from the process.
KEY TECNOLOGY.indd 3
25/07/13 10.42
This new out-of-balance motor inherently improves equipment hygiene by eliminating the oil that can inadvertently contaminate product, especially when the equipment is mounted over other equipment. The new energy unit also reduces maintenance. Key’s new vector lock screen clamp features a unique hybrid design that enables it to perform multiple functions simultaneously. This patent-pending mechanism, used to secure an Iso-Flo conveyor’s screen in place, is easier to open and close. It allows an operator to lock and unlock a screen with one hand and no tools to swap out screens more quickly and easily. Compared to traditional locks, this hybrid does not lose pressure over time – it won’t rattle, even when in the open position, or leak. It helps keep floors dry to improve worker safety and enhance sanitation.
Other new Iso-Flo features eliminate laminations and enclosed hollow bodies that can harbor bacteria. Scalloped flat bars are continuously welded, replacing skip welding. The new plate frame replaces traditional tube frames and elastomer isolators replace coil spring isolators that can trap product and rust. The new isolator-brackets feature an “easy slide out” capability that enables the processor to remove isolators during maintenance without a forklift. The new internal ground arm replaces a traditional ground strap that is prone to breakage and can cause product to hang up. Equipment stickers, which can flake and fall into product zones, are eliminated. Key’s Standard Utility Shakers, which include all of these hygienic improvements, are available in two sizes, 24-inch (61 cm) and 36-inch (91 cm) wide, both 72 in-
ches long (1.8 meters), and with or without screens. The Model 2472 offers 10 square feet (0.93 sq meters) of screen area and the Model 3672 offers 15 square feet (1.4 sq meters) of screen area. These standard shakers feature geometry that enables multiple shakers to be nested in a line maximizing the versatility of the two standard shakers to meet the needs of each application. The shakers with screens include drip pans to capture water or fines. Key offers customized Utility Shakers in other sizes and configurations. All Iso-Flo conveyors, including the Standard Utility Shakers, are backed by Key’s industry-leading five-year warranty that assures equipment reliability while limiting the processor’s total cost of ownership. All standard Iso-Flo conveyors feature the CE mark and UL certification.

FLOW PACK PACKAGING MACHINES AND AUTOMATIC PACKAGING SYSTEMS
T
hree decades have passed since in the early 80’s, in a small factory located on the outskirts of Schio, two eager and enthusiastic engineers began to try their hand at used packaging machines, with a view to restoring them to an acceptable working condition. This operation was called an overhaul, a term which has now gone out of use in today’s “disposable” world. It was exactly this constant disassembling, replacing, modifying and testing of old machinery that led to the decision to create new and modern machines. In 1985 the first packaging machines of the newly established Tecno Pack were introduced on the market, immediately enjoying great appreciation among the clientele. Thus began the company’s long journey, focused on responding promptly and professionally to the ever more demanding needs of the market, advancing with courage and determination down the challenging road of automatic packaging

systems. These were years of commitment, sacrifice and constant research, but also great satisfaction and growth. In the meantime, Tecno Pack moved to a new headquarters in the Schio industrial zone, an area better suited for the company’s evolving and growing logistic production needs.Since 2011 the continuity of our work is ensured in a new 6000 m² site also situated in the traditionally hard-working town of Schio, industrially nicknamed “the little Manchester of Italy” since the second half of the nineteenth century. Machine after machine, system after system the story continues, inevitably entwined with professional and personal affairs without, however, affecting the company’s ideological continuity which has been guaranteed over time by constant investment and commitment in research and innovation, the solid genesis of success which led Tecno Pack to qualify as a full-fledged market leader. Tecnopack is pleased to inform that during IBA 2012 it is presenting
the vertical pillow-pack machines on completion of its already wide range of machinery.

soft, sticky, flexible or difficult-tohandle products, the inverted horizontal flow wrapper transports the packaging film from below, while the product is fed directly from the feeding system onto the film. This prevents pushing the product over a steel plate, which eliminates a potential source of contamination, enhancing hygiene and product safety. Removable covers and catch pans below the finwheel assembly and on the infeed give manufacturers the benefit of easy cleaning. unit minimizes jams, leading to reduced downtime and therefore enhances efficiency. The modular film backstand, which can be placed in various positions relative to the infeed and wrapper, allows to set up the machine according to product specific requirements, resulting in high efficiency and an optimized film path, lowering pack rejection rate. The machine can be easily adjusted to accommodate different product heights, which decreases downtime during product changeovers.
High product quality with integrated coffee packaging technology Bosch will also exhibit its fully-integrated coffee packaging solution at
FachPack 2013, featuring several advanced technologies specially designed to maintain long product shelf life and efficient production. The core of the integrated packaging line is the modular vertical form, fill and seal machine PME 4001 for high-quality bags. The bags are filled with an inert gas flush through the FVS auger filler. The auger filler’s high filling precision, low residual oxygen rates, and gentle product handling result in low product rejects and waste. The valve applicator CVA 2000 VIS ensures reliable and accurate application of inside aroma protection valves, which upholds the coffee quality for consumer satisfaction. The integrated coffee packaging platform also includes the high-precision

KWI 6000 checkweigher to measure pack weight and to adjust over- and underfilling of the product by tendency-regulation with the auger filler.
Optimized line performance with Preventive Maintenance service Bosch will also present its service concept Preventive Maintenance.
BOSCH FP 4/13.indd 6
With the aim of ensuring that appropriate maintenance procedures are conducted at scheduled intervals, Preventive Maintenance helps producers optimize machinery performance and packaging line efficiency. Performed on-site by Bosch’s expert technicians, the service ranges from basic modules, including line check-ups, to support by an embedded engineer, who is specifically trained for the customers´ production requirements and is incorporated into the production team for a certain period of time. A choice of modules is available to meet producers’ specific needs regarding the level of required maintenance, product environment, and seasonal changes in production volume. This modular approach to preventive maintenan-
ce enables producers to minimize scheduled maintenance downtime, maximizing productivity and profitability. Rounding out Bosch’s show presence will be a Carton Printing System (CPS) that includes a Tamper Evident function. With this CPS module, manufacturers can meet the requirements stipulated by Directive 2011/62/EU of the European Union, creating a second layer of security in the form of tamper-proof closures. A maximum of 300 cartons per minute can be printed and verified at a length of approximately 2,000 millimeters. The CPS 1900 with Tamper Evident function places transparent standard labels on the folding carton; verification is accomplished with a sensor. In order to eliminate the customer’s need to purchase an additional machine, this system is available with a labeler or checkweigher, or with a combination of both. The technologies will be on display at Bosch’s booth 305, hall 4A of the Exhibition Centre, Nuremberg, September 24 to 26, 2013.

IS FOOD NUTRITION LABELLING STILL AN EFFECTIVE INFLUENCE TO GUIDE CONSUMERS TO HEALTHIER FOOD CHOICES? Knowing that at least 22 different labelling systems have been developed in Europe, optimizing and standardizing them seem necessary to improve the consumers’ understanding of labels.
Simplification and harmonisation of nutrition labelling is needed Food manufacturers could be responsible for the lack of interest or misunderstanding consumers feel towards labelling. Indeed, consumers felt the need to be assisted in the interpretation of nutritional information. According to EUFIC (European Food Information Council), consumers feel excluded by the terminology used in nutrition labelling. More than numbers, they need visual help so that they can focus their attention on the most important information as it is often complex and difficult to read on the labels1. By studying the eye movements of consumers on a basic label (nutritional facts table), it was observed that people browsed the label without actually focusing on any information. When the same consumers were confronted to a more illustrated label (highlighting in colour the percentage of nutrients compared with the RDA2), their attention was better directed towards the important information. These people then admitted to better understand the second label, even though both contained the same information. A simplification solution would therefore be to use meaningful colour codes. For example, in the United Kingdom, a “traffic light” system is implemented: the green, orange and red colours are used to indicate if the product has a low, medium or high quantity of a specific nutrient. Thresholds intakes are set by companies varying from one product
ALCIMED FP 2/13.indd 3
category to the other, often in collaboration with a panel of scientific experts. In this standardized system, the nutritional information is either given per serving or in the whole package. The information remains unchanged but the new presentation allows consumers to visualize it faster and makes it easier to be interpreted. However, this representation method has one main drawback: it stigmatizes products that have a “red light” on some criteria. Another interesting way to compare labels is the American system which indicates the portion sizes to be consumed. For example, for breakfast, if an American consumer wants to base his/her purchase on the amount of nutrients found in three slices of bread or a bowl of cereals, he/she can compare this amount to the one found in a portion of another product, according to the USDA guidelines3 (portion sizes are given as an indication). Thus, in France, “nutritional labelling using portion sizes rather than the RDA4 system could be encouraged,” says Anne Claire Lapie, Project Manager in ALCIMED’s Food Business Unit. The impact of this mandatory labelling policy on public health remains to be assessed. However, European consumers appear to have a strong need for systems that will guide them in their purchase decision, in addition to the existing labelling methods offered by food manufacturers (source: EUFIC).
Consumer education is essen-
tial A Canadian study5 revealed the importance of advertising and marketing, as a vector for nutrition education, targeted at rural populations with low income and education. Working groups, led by nutrition educators, were organized; the purchasing behaviour of these individuals was analysed before and after their participation in these working groups. The study concluded that there is a significant improvement in consumer attitudes: they are more interested in nutrition labelling and healthier products are targeted. Finally, according to Constance Hervieu, consultant in ALCIMED’s Food Business Unit, “it is essential to combine both strategies: to set up a simple nutrition labelling, easily interpretable and standardized between products and brands and to develop simultaneously educational programs on nutrition.”

TAILOR-MADE WASHING SOLUTIONS FOR DAIRIES JEROS A/S is an international expert , with more than 50 years experience in advanced and customized industrial washing solutions for e.g. dairy and food industries. This year JEROS finished a comprehensive washing project at the international dairy company Arla Foods’ white cheese plant in Kruså.
W
hite cheese at Arla Kruså
Close to the German border, you find one of Arla Foods’ largest plants for white cheese production. As the dairy giant constantly focus on optimizing the hygienic standards, Arla contacted JEROS asking the company to project washing solutions for a white cheese Alpma line which handles cutting and packaging at Arla Foods Kruså. - At my first meeting at Kruså, the cleaning specifications of the Alpma line was clarified, and shortly after we installed a standard washing machine for subsequently hygienic tests, explains JEROS’ Product Manager, Per Rasmussen. After a period of two months testing, a thorough specification on how to clean conveyors and removable parts of the cheese line was
made. In March the drawing and construction of the specific Washing Solution was executed, and in April-May the equipment was installed and is now on the run.
8160 Washing solution at Arla The industrial washing solution projected for Arla Foods Kruså is a JEROS 8160. In addition to the stationary part of the industrial washer 8160, the JEROS staff constructed four trolleys and three Multi-Washing-Insertions that fit into the stationary washer. Betwe-
en each batch, the dairy operator un-hooks conveyors and removable equipment from the cheese plant and arrange the parts in the specially designed Multi-WashingInsertions placed on the trolleys. As the 8160 design focus on high ergonomic standards, the WashingInsertion is easily pushed from the trolley and into the stationary Washer. Afterwards the machine is closed and ready for washing for 6 minutes with detergents and water heated to 60 oC followed by end-rinsing at 85 oC ensuring maximum hygiene. After washing, the lid opens automatically, and the dairy staff easily rolls the WashingInsertions on the trolley back into the production facilities where the cleaned equipment is ready to remount on the cheese line. The operating costs of the 8160 are minimized with a sensor-dosing system for detergents and thermostatically controlled heating elements. Further features are adjustable wash pressure and temperature, drain pump, automatic start, selfcleaning program and micro-steering by finger touch control panel. Per Rasmussen stresses that the

Cleaning Multihead Weighers Consumer demands for convenient portion packed foods are constantly increasing, and thus dairies and food producers install a growing number of Multihead Weighers. These market conditions led JEROS to construct an industrial cleaning system for multihead weigher components, the JEROS ACE which is a flexible and efficient cleaning system for scale parts. The ACE cleaning procedure takes only 20-30 minutes, and the time span includes: Loading the racks on the trolley with the hoppers, transport, rolling racks from trolley into the washer, washing - and in the meantime dry-cleaning of the weigher centre, rolling the racks out of the washer onto the trolley, and finally transportation and re-placing the hoppers on the weigher.

ADVANTAGES OF FORM, FILL AND SEAL FOR YOGURT PACKAGING
I
t’s difficult to go a day without seeing or hearing about the health advantages of consuming yogurt. The yogurt industry has been experiencing steady growth, as it diversifies its offering and enters new regions with lower cost production. As part of this industry-wide growth, many manufacturers are pursuing the best packaging option for production of the product. One such option contributing to progress in this market category is Form, Fill and Seal (FFS). The main reason for the success: FSS is a fairly simple and highly efficient process. The packaging material is formed into a package, then filled with the food product, then sealed. There are two typically types of FFS processes used today: vertical and horizontal. Vertical is typically used for flexible plastic packaging. During this production process a plastic film is fed vertically through a machine. The horizontal process, as its name suggests, involves having rigid sheet fed into a machine horizontally to form a rigid plastic package. “Manufacturers deploying FSS for the packaging of yogurt have been able to maintain the necessary high production rates, reduce their processing steps, and decrease their need for manual labor,” stated William J. Barenberg, Jr., OCTAL’s COO. “The FSS process also minimizes the risk of food contamination due to reduced contact with equipment and plant personnel. All of these benefits combined have aided manufacturers to yield an overall cost savings compared to other yogurt packaging options.” Additionally, FSS packaging is especially well suited to producing multipacks. Multipacks can eliminate the need for secondary materials such as cardboard or shrink sleeves, fa-
OCTAL FP 3/13.indd 3
cilitating additional cost savings. However, a critical component for additional benefits and cost reductions relies on the material selection for the package. The material options for FSS packaging are determined by many factors including: product, filling temperature, bacteria sensitivity, sterilization method, storage conditions, desired shelf- life and package design. For the sake of this article we will just focus on the advantages of the material PET sheet for the yogurt multipack. PET sheet has many distinct characteristics that give it an edge over other polymers, with one of its principal advantages being mechanical robustness. PET sheet combines rigidity with toughness. Yet, the package is resilient enough to prevent it from cracking, a concern issue with styrene based plastics, which ensures good performance during transportation. Plus, PET sheet has lower permeability for oxygen than other commonly used polymers, which increases the shelf life of yogurt. Nonetheless, many packaging manufacturers have discovered if the PET sheet material is not manufactured with concern for the upmost quality, they could still find it somewhat difficult to produce the best yogurt container possible. Some producers have found with the right equipment along with the use of OCTAL DPET™’s sheet, they have been
able to consistently produce a high quality yogurt package. Yogurt packaging systems are some of the most demanding in the world. Consistency and machinability for uptime and productivity is a key performance indicator. OCTAL DPET™ direct-to-sheet manufacturing system is designed to provide the kind of consistency it takes to realize the absolute maximum from Form, Fill, and Seal (FFS) lines. With a typically observed gauge variation of +/- 2 to 3 microns, DPET™ enables FFS operations to run at highly consistent rates day after day. Sealing quality is also optimized with DPET™’s highly planer surface topography. Additionally, DPET™ cuts easier than traditional PET sheets, meaning more uniform cutting, and knives that last longer between sharpening and replacement. DPET™ also delivers a smooth and glossy surface that is perfect for detailed printing designs and process printing or label application, yielding attractive packs with enhanced shelf presence. “As OCTAL establishes itself as the market leader in PET sheet, more and more yogurt producers are finding that DPET™’s physical properties translate directly into advantages for both the yogurt manufacturer,” stated William J. Barenberg, Jr., OCTAL’s COO. “Now, they can now produce a high quality yogurt package, along with reducing cost by ordering a thinner sheet. In addition, yogurt manufacture can gain additional business because DPET™’s meets many new sustainability requirements.”

DINNISSEN PROCESS TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASES ITS NEWEST DIMA 200 BAG EMPTIER FOR SAFELY AND EFFICIENTLY DISCHARGING FINE PARTICLES
D
innissen Process Technology has developed a new version of the classic Dima 200 bag emptier for safely and efficiently emptying bags filled with fine powders, particles or granulates. The new model, which makes it possible to automatically empty bags while releasing less than 0.1 mg of product per m3 of discharged product, is intended primarily for companies that need to create a safe working environment for their operators in a wide range of sectors.
Fully automatic bag emptier focuses on operator safety Governments are applying increasingly stringent standards when it comes to the release of fine and ultrafine particles. As a result, companies are also increasingly being confronted with the challenge of having to prevent the release of even very small quantities of fine particles when bags need to be emptied. In response to these requirements, Dinnissen Process Technology has developed a new ultrafine version of the classic Dima 200 bag emptier. The new ultrafine model can automatically empty even large bags containing very fine particles, including those that are extremely light and/or which pose a dust explosion or other type of hazard. The Dima 200 is fitted with a dust-free handling unit, and bags can automatically be fed into the unit if desired. After the unit is sealed, the emptying process is automatically started whereby the bag, which is su-
DENNISSEN FP 2/13.indd 3
spended by two hooks, is cut in half by a revolving knife. The emptying process is assisted via vibration, after which the empty bags are automatically discharged.
Double filter with powerful suction and special air exhaust seal The ultrafine Dima 200 bag emptier was developed by Dinnissen especially for situations in which companies are required to prevent the release of even the smallest quantities of fine particles when bags need to be emptied. This newest version is fitted with a double filter with powerful suction and a special dust-tight seal for the air exhaust. The smoothly polished interior of the unit simplifies cleaning and prevents particles from being left behind in the machine. The design is based on Dinnissen’s easyto-clean-concept which facilitates
quick and efficient cleaning. Finally, the new model works with a fully automated cleaning-in-place concept based on air flow and suction, practically eliminating the need for any human intervention during the cleaning process.
Automated cleaning of bags for improved hygiene In some situations, very strict standards apply in the area of hygiene and the prevention of contamination in the production process. Dinnissen Process Technology therefore also provides clients with an extra option whereby the bags, after being fed into the ultrafine Dima 200, are first cleaned with the help of a special ‘air knife’ before being cut open. After the cleaning process, any dirt and contaminants present are first carefully sucked off and removed, and only then is the bag emptied.

the product is bagged, the packages are conveyed by a belt conveyor to a first automatic storing station and distributed on steel trays, piled up to a number of layers set by the product’s flow schedule, then deposited on a storage cart which inserts them into an autoclave for pasteurization. After the heattreatment, the cart moves towards another automatic station where the trays are withdrawn one by one and placed on belts that convey them to the boxing line. Along this track the packages pass through a
system that detects the presence foreign bodies. System’s box producing machine forms pre-glued American boxes closed underneath by hot melt or adhesive tape. The filling is done vertically in a following station by a last generation anthropomorphic robot (or Cartesian axis). The pick&place system fills more than one box contemporaneously withdrawing 2 packages at a time. The filled American boxes proceed towards the closing station and then towards the palletizer.

LIGHTWEIGHT AND VERSATILE, THE MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS OF EPS PACKAGING
The wide range of physical/mechanical properties and the superb flexibility of Expanded Polystyrene to the most diverse needs provide competitive solutions, both economically and environmentally, to the problems of packaging, which can vary greatly according to level of protection required for products.
Thermal Insulating Containers The outstanding and peculiar characteristic of EPS to preserve food and beverage enable freshness extension of food for a long period of time, thus limiting temperature ranges of the packaged products. The usage of EPS ranges from fish boxes to ice-cream containers, passing through the little-known take away disposable cups and mozzarella boxes; the main parameters to be considered here are temperature and how to keep the right one. The high insulating capacity which characterizes expanded polystyrene (EPS) is crucial to satisfy the requirements of isothermal containers, which can keep packaged products in the best and constant temperature conditions. The capacity of a material to conduct heat is commonly expressed by the measure of “thermal conductivity” (λ): the lower this value, the better its insulating capacity. If we compare the thermal conductibility value of EPS (about 0.035 W/mK), with the value of other conventional packaging materials, we realize that EPS is an ideal material to manufacture packaging which must ensure thermal insulation. The peculiar thermal insulating properties of EPS combined with hygiene and safety features (it is resistant to fungi and bacteria) makes it ideal to be used, for example, to keep a perishable product such as seafood in a
AIPE FP.indd 3
evenly fresh environment for the time needed to send it to the market. Moreover EPS is inert to fats, salts, acids and its closed cell structure prevent water or any other liquid from being absorbed.
Fish Boxes Available in a variety of custom molded shapes (boxes, containers, trays, plateaus, etc) EPS is the most popular material for seafood products, which remains a major food industry sector in which EPS dominates with many thousand of tons used, replacing wood almost completely, thus satisfying the strict regulations in force, both at a European and at a national level. This is possible mainly thanks to three fundamental roles which EPS fulfils simultaneously: insulating protection, hygienic protection and anti-shock protection. EPS effectively retards balance with room temperature and ensure to keep optimal thermal conditions for the packaged goods. Fish maintains its qualities and freshness and is not subject to thermal shocks, thus preserving from abrupt temperature changes that may alter it. EPS boxes for seafood packing/packaging are waterproof and ensure product protection against contamination, keeping it in satisfactory hygienic conditions. Moreover they are designed so as to facilitate drainage of meltwater,
as required by the regulations in force. As for the latter aspect, fish boxes are designed in two ways: › The box base has a separated compartment, serving as a collection system, so that meltwater, or even the physiological fluids of fish, can percolate there and do not come into contact with the product. Therefore the product lays on a surface having some cracks/splits of a reduced size (which does not compromise their performances) suitable to the aim. › The internal lining is manufactured with special material to absorb the melted ice and other liquids for the necessary time. The current EPS boxes are manufactured by using the technique of surface crystallization, a production technology involving different products, which provides a better surface finishing, both as for mechanical resistance and hygiene and easier cleaning. These are extremely relevant aspects for the compliance to the strict existing reference standards found in this field of application.
03/07/13 16.30
Ice-cream Containers For takeaway ice-creams and frozen cakes, both for handicrafts and industrial products, a consistent range of EPS thermal insulating containers is available on the market, in different shapes and types: there are containers that can be stacked, which facilitates storage in ice-cream shops, saving on space, or others coming in various shapes (flower, small case, etc…) providing attractiveness and packaging design to the end product. Different finishing of containers can be obtained: smooth, rough, mat, decorated or embossed surfaces, according to different specifications and requirements. Such a wide range of customized products offers endless options in terms of appearance and communication. The transfer phases are the most critical moments and the use of EPS containers can better solve the problem of transporting the ice-cream from cold storage of the sales point (display fridge of the ice-cream shop for example) to the fridge-refrigerator of your home. The most widespread containers are made up of two components: one EPS molded and a thermoformed part in crystal polystyrene (PS), intended to contain the foodstuff, later introduced or directly glued to the first one during the manufacturing stage. The “crystallization” technology has been recently introduced for ice-cream containers also.
Bottle Containers (oil/wine cellars) EPS is also used to manufacture interesting types of bottle packaging: versatile containers, with an innovative and modern look, to transport any type of bottle (Bordeaux, Burgun-
AIPE FP.indd 4
dy, Rhenish, Champagne, as well as round and square oil bottles). In this case expanded polystyrene is no longer a primary packaging (since it does not come into contact with the food-beverage) while it turns into a practical bottle-holder: the packaging is extremely handy, which ensures goods protection and thanks to its insulating properties, it preserves wine and oil from abrupt changes in temperature (remember that the packaging can always be personali-
zed by using silk-screen printing). Different solutions are available on the market, with the most diverse models according to the customers needs: gift packages characterized by an elegant design, providing single packaging for 1 or 2 bottles, or bottle holder systems which can receive up to 6 bottles, handy, resistant and suitable for big shipments. Finally real “display/packaging” are available on the market, that is systems that package products, allow their handling and they are then turned into a display to be used on the point of sale. This new concept of handling (the packaging which displays) can be used with all the items c onnected to world of mass retailing and in particular preserves, oil, beverage, pasta, cakes, gifts and fancy goods.
vegetable industry, since its features are well suited to the operating, trading and communication needs of the sector, thus making it a packaging product useful for collection and preservation, for shipment and transport, for retailing and display. EPS provides actually a robust and protective packaging which can reduce logistic damage and the consequent deterioration of food and at the same time able to keep its freshness and nutritional values. According to some studies, fruit and vegetable products, especially in the mass distribution, are subject to packaging damage (on the average, 30 to 45% of more than 80,000 tons of fruits and vegetables packaged in one yean in US proved to be damaged) and for this reason some international research institutes carried out analysis by comparing different types of packaging to optimize the transport of fruit and vegetable products and reduce the relevant bruises. EPS packaging proved to be the best, thus showing that EPS can keep nutritional values of these delicate products. (Studies carried out on apples, pears, grapes, marrows, cucumbers, tomatoes).
Fruit and Vegetable Industry EPS is widely used in the fruit and

AVERY DENNISON DOUBLES ITS “THINKTHIN™” PORTFOLIO TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE LABELLING
A
very Dennison Label and Packaging Materials has introduced seven new ‘thin’ film and paper products that retain shelf impact while making premium food labels more sustainable through thinner label material constructions. Brands are making ever stronger demands for waste reduction and more sustainable products, and the Avery Dennison ThinkThin™ range is an important tool for label converters who want to measure and report on sustainability improvements. Thinner facestocks and liners across the entire range ensure both performance and environmental benefits across many different films, papers and thermal products, compared to the standard thicker versions. This is because they require fewer raw materials and less energy during manufacture, according to lifecycle assessment charts compiled by Avery Dennison. “This expanded ThinkThin portfolio has been designed with realworld needs of label converters and brand owners in mind,” said Jan ‘t Hart, product line director at Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials. “Better sustainability credentials are the foundation of the
avery dannison.indd 3
ThinkThin initiative, but our priority remains that of giving customers materials that look great and perform better than ever. ‘Green’ does not have to mean ‘second best’ if the technology is right.” The new ThinkThin film materials are ideal for premium food labelling applications. They feature Avery Dennison’s innovative S7000 adhesive which enables high speed production and offers both waterwhitening resistance and reduced adhesive bleed. The extended film family now includes PE LG Top as well as the thinner PP 40 Top, both
with top coating and available in clear and white. The Avery Dennison Greenprint™ lifecycle analysis quickly reveals the sustainability ‘wins’ made possible by new ThinkThin products. For example, PP40 Top Clear (with S7000 adhesive and a PET23 liner) uses 46% less energy, generates 30% less solid waste and consumes 39% less fossil material than the conventional PP60/S4000/ PET30 material. The liner is also fully recyclable via Avery Dennison’s recycling program, available throughout Europe. ThinkThin paper–based products are now all FSC-certified and can be used in a wider variety of substrates, whether in food labelling or in other applications such as home and personal care. The MC70 paper facestock is lighter than the conventional MC Primecoat alternative, and is now available with new adhesive options that allow ThinkThin paper materials to cope with applications all the way from the cool room through to high speed room temperature labelling. Thermal labelling also receives a welcome boost: Thermal Thin 200LD is now available with S2000N permanent emulsion adhesive, allowing higher speed application.

FAMILY CIRCLE BISCUITS PERFECTLY PACKED: WEIDENHAMMER PRODUCES FIRST IML PACKAGING IN THE UK
S
ince August 2012, Weidenhammer UK, the British subsidiary of the Weidenhammer Packaging Group (WPG), supplies United Biscuits with a high-quality In-Mould Labelling (IML) box for their “Family Circle” biscuits. The square-shaped biscuit box is the first plastic packaging produced by the WPG in its British factory located in Bradford. The Family Circle box is sealed with a plastic lid which ensures aroma protection and optimum flavour. Both lid and container use IML technology for decoration, thus giving it a highquality character with brilliant and appetising images of the biscuits. The WPG is Europe’s leading supplier of composite cans, composite drums and plastic containers. The red Family Circle box is a major milestone for Weidenhammer’s business in the UK. It is the first IML packaging the WPG produces in the UK and it paves the way for the rollout of the important plastic packaging business. “We have been preparing carefully for this significant step for almost a year”, said Mike Winship, Sales Manager at Weidenhammer UK. Already during the construction phase of its UK site, WPG had established plans for its first own plastics production outside Germany. Thanks to the new Family Circle box, the ambitious project was put into action within less than a year. “Family Circle biscuits rank among the most popular brands in the UK. Thus, the new box is an important reference product for us,” said Winship.

United Biscuits (UB) is WPG’s first customer for plastic packaging in the UK. The pastries expert has already been among Weidenhammer’s most important customers in the UK for many years. UB uses composite cans “made in Bradford” for several other products: “We are familiar with Weidenhammer UK from other projects and appreciate their high-quality packaging,” said Ed Fuchs, Purchasing Manager at UB. “It was a logical step for us to extend this collaboration to plastic packaging and to have them produce a part of our Family Circle boxes.” Though the red “Family Circle” box is not a new development as such, its closure has been significantly optimised. The square-shaped box with a size of 24.5 to 23.2 to 8.4 centimetres is sealed with a plastic lid which additionally ensures aroma protection and optimum flavour
after first opening. Both lid and container use IML technology for decoration. What’s more, decanting is no longer necessary with the readyto-use box. It can be placed directly on the dinner or tea time table, and consequently ensures a long brand presence for consumers. Great potential in future Beginning in 2005, the WPG has successfully established its IML plastic packaging division on the German market. However, Thomas Strieder, Head of International Sales at WPG, considers the UK an important future growth market for IML plastic packaging: “The UK is a trendsetter for high-quality and large volume plastic packaging, especially regarding diversity of form and cost efficiency compared to metal cans. In fact, we are already in negotiations with further potential customers.”.

FUNCTIONAL BARS: GEARING PRODUCTS TO SPECIFIC TARGET GROUPS Functional chocolate bars are one of the booming segments of the rapidly expanding functional food market. They combine the continuing health and fitness trend with convenience and pleasure. Variants directed towards specific target groups offer considerable value-added potential.
O
nly a few years ago, functional bars were still directed chiefly towards athletes. But in the meantime they have become a segment in their own right and serve a diversity of target groups.
HERZA FP 4/13.indd 3
However, the focus is still on active sports. “There are now special bars that meet the specific nutritional demands of different forms of sport”, says Marc van Essen, Key Account Manager at HERZA Schokolade. “Cyclists need different nutrients
from body-builders, so there is a correspondingly high level of diversification.” That is also true of the approach to other target groups. Through the specific use of amino acids, dietary fibres, secondary plant metabo-

lites, vitamins or fatty acids, for example, it is possible to create special bars that meet the needs of individual consumer groups. Protein bars, for instance, serve as meal replacers in the context of a calorie-reduced diet. An interesting substance in this connection is L-carnitine, which has become known chiefly as a “fat burner”. Another of the growing categories is lifestyle products. HERZA’s product developer Kim Herrmann: “Besides bars containing guarana, variants that promote concentration and performance are conceivable. This effect can be achieved with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and lecithin powder. And even a beauty bar could be developed with the use of coenzyme Q10. In principle there is no end to the possibilities.” As a contract manufacturer, HERZA offers functional bars to suppliers of branded products for athletes, health products and dietetic foods. These are based on formulations specified by the customer or on HERZA’s own standard recipes. In addition, the company develops tailor-made products which enable customers to stand out from their competitors. “Many firms come
HERZA FP 4/13.indd 4
to us with an idea for a product, which we then realize and prepare for the market together,” Kim Herrmann explains. “Our advantage is that we have been using functional ingredients in the production of our chocolate pieces for a number of years, so we have the necessary experience. This experience helps us with the development of functional bars. We already use pro- and prebiotic products, guarana, antioxidants and dietary fibres which satisfy the appetite and cause only a gradual rise in the blood glucose level.” Of course the optimum composition of the nutrients and their exact dosage can be adjusted individually. And with the aid of the latest production technology we can ensure that the specified amounts of the nutrients are maintained precisely in each and every bar.
From product development to packaging At the recently enlarged Technology Centre of the Stern-Wywiol Gruppe, the company’s experts have a total of 3,000 square metres of sophisticated plant and equipment at their disposal for testing combinations of nutrients
and any interactions between them. Besides this, HERZA has a laboratory of its own specializing in applications for chocolate. In addition to the supply of nutrients, the enjoyment value of functional bars plays an important role. Flavour, consistency and mouth feel must be taken into account too. In the production of bars, HERZA benefits by it years of experience in the manufacture of chocolates. This know-how enables the company not only to work different ingredients like crispies or nuts into the paste forming the core of the bar but also to scatter them on the bars before the latter are coated with chocolate. As a member of the Stern-Wywiol Gruppe the company also draws on the knowledge and resources of its sister firms – SternVitamin as a nutrient specialist and SternMaid for the production of the base mixture. Because of this network of cooperation within the group, the contract manufacturer is able to supply the whole package: from product development through production of the base mixture to completion and packaging of the bars.

he increasingly stringent hygiene regulations introduced to the water used in the food industry, combined with the need to use cold water for a good dough, directed us to design this particular type of water coolers which have high performance and optimum quality/price relationship. The refined design and the possibility to be hung to the wall, solve the problem of space and allow the installation of the water cooler near the source of use, eliminating the dispersion of water temperature due to the route in the pipeline when it is placed remotely. The dosakit can be combined to each model; in addition to the functions of water-meter, thanks to the special bundled software, it makes available a wide range of applications to speed up and optimize the work of dough. The function of heating as well as cooling, makes the machine useful and usable throughout the year (and not just in the summer). The hygiene: the appropriate ser-

pentine, which contains the water to be used for dough, is made entirely of stainless steel so the water is never in contact with air, eliminating in this way the breeding of bacteria. The dual-circuit cooling / evaporator avoids the possibility to pollute the water in the event of failure of the cooling system. The thermic exchange between the cooling circuit and the recirculation
circuit (of the water to be used) is ensured by an immersion pump which constantly moves the water. Using mains pressure, the unit doesn’t need pumps for dispensing. Setting of the desired water temperature through a suitable electronic temperature controller. The circuit for the filling of the tank makes it easy to install, avoiding the onerous task to open the machine the first time.

MODERN BAKERY MOSCOW WEITER AUF WACHSTUMSKURS 28,5 Prozent mehr Fachbesucher als im Vorjahr › Hohe Internationalität der Aussteller › Für knapp 75 Prozent der Fachbesucher die wichtigste Messe › Viele Besucher mit Entscheidungskompetenz › Positive Resonanz auf den neuen Apriltermin › Neue Themen „Eis & Schokolade“ kamen sehr gut an
T
24/07/13 15.08

THE ADVANTAGES OF A CHAIN TRANSMISSION
Rosa Catene: listens, evaluates and solves the Customer’s problems. Mr Rosa, tell us something about your production. Our Company was founded as a manufacturer of standard transmission roller chains. Changes in the market and mainly, competition with the Asian market for these products, brought us to invest in sectors with higher values where our great experience accumulated through the years can be better expressed with products, such as: special custommade chains for the food industry, chains suitable for particular working environments with high or low temperatures, self-lubricant chains which allow customers to completely avoid the use of polluting oils or grease and last but not least, which eliminate periodic maintenance, chains with special coatings which can range from simple galvanization
ROSACATENE FP 4/13.indd 3
to chemical nickel-plating, ali according to the Customer’s needs. The present philosophy of our Company is to listen, evaluate and solve our customer’s problems.
the pull or power to be transmitted) , but for its overall size. With the same pull, the chain is definitely narrower and it can generally utilize gears with lower pitch diameters.
What are the advantages of chain transmission
What are the characteristics of your products?
The main advantage of chain transmission is the possibility to transmit either small or large powers with the same level of safety, limited size and optimal performance. Another advantage is the high level of elasticity of the chain links and therefore the ability to neutralize the discontinuity of the transmission to a large extent and to mitigate “tears”. Chain transmission , in comparison to belt transmission , takes up less space, not so much for the shafts and the supports (which depends on
Unlike belt transmission, the chain can operate without difficulty at relatively high temperatures with the only requisite being the use of suitable lubrication. Standard configuration chains can work up to 180° C , something “standard” belts cannot do. There is also no slipping between the chain and the pinion teeth. Only a slight adjustment is present allowing the chains to transport heavier loads with respect to belt transmission. Chain transmissions ensure long
29/08/13 09.48
special CONFECTIONERY - BAKERY working life. The chains are manufactured with materials, heat treatments or with special coatings to permit the chain to operate in difficult environments.
How do you select the chain that better suits the needs of a customer? The solutions we suggest must be effective and must have the unique aim to solve the problem of an application. l’m not talking about miracles. l’m talking about competence.
Our readers mainly operate in the food industry. Others are suppliers of machinery and technologies. How do your products meet the needs of the food industry? The co-operation takes piace in our technical department , depositary of ali our experience accumulated over decades. The Customer indicates the relevant technical data of the requirements of the application and informs us about any eventual problems regarding the environment in which the chain will have to work. We examine the information and discuss ideas. We try to find the weak points that we have to correct even with simple but perceptible improvements and then we choose the best solutions and offer our proposals. Then, the customer must decide which solution better suits his needs, taking into consideration the econimical side, which is also quite essential.
ROSACATENE FP 4/13.indd 4
Can you give us a real example of a benefit that your customer can take advantage of by using your products? lt is precisely the food industry that has considerable needs and performance requirements . Our product has always been defined a “pollutant” in food plants because they are often full of dirt, oils and various lubricants that can affect the hygiene of the environment in which they work. Our decision to intervene by putting “self-lubricant” chains on the market was based on these principles. These chains, mentioned above, avoid any contamination and maintenance. The feedback has been extremely positive. We have customers who install the product and “forget” about it. We solved many problems and many customers rewarded us with their loyalty.
Where do you manufacture your products? In what parts ofthe world do you export? Our Company’s production site is in Calolziocorte in the Itaiian province of Lecco. We export about 60% of our products: ali over Europe, North Africa, Turkey, and Australia.
Tell us about your future projects. Talking about pians for the future, in times like these, with this world wide economica! crisis and in particular with the Italian economy, is not easy. We are investing in resources in new markets where we expect significant returns and we never stop developing new technologies that allow us to reduce the internai production costs. Our Company has continually grown over the years and it has found its piace in the market. We trust in the future because we believe that the “best” will survive and we will be among them.

STORCI AND PRESSES, TECHNOLOGY TO MEET EVERYONE’S NEEDS
S
torci has always made its mark on the international market with its pasta and couscous production plants. Without doubt it is thanks to its widespread reputation in building presses, the real beating heart of any pasta production line. Its experience and high level of reliability start with the large presses which are built exclusively for Fava and completed by all the other models where quality and attention to detail are never lacking. Up to 600 kg/hour for the production of dry pasta with solutions for making many different types of pasta: from the simplest shapes to the most complex special pastas. Our jewel in the crown? Innovative dough preparation systems such as the Premix® and the Beltmix®, continuous automatic dosing units for dry and liquid ingredients, hardened stainless steel three-spiral extrusion screws with variable pitch for special pasta shapes and long-lasting performance. All presses are built from stainless steel and are designed to produce all kinds of pasta using circular to linear dies. The V70.1-220 TV/G and V 90.1250 TV/G models have a horizontal head and are used to produce short-cut pasta and sheets for long pasta (e.g. tagliatelle), cut, or filled pasta. The vertical head models, 70.1 TV, 90.1 TV / 105.1 TV, 130.1 TV, cover a production capacity ranging from 180 - 750 kg/h for short-cut pasta and 150 - 600 kg/h for long-cut pasta.
storci FP 4/13.indd 3
The N and D configurations of the double head represent the most interesting patent. The double linear and circular head “N” is specifically designed for short-cut pasta, nested pasta/lasagna sheets and nested pasta/extruded lasagna, while the double circular and linear head “D” is specifically designed for short- and long-cut pasta, nested
pasta/lasagna sheets and extruded lasagna. With the use of special extrusion screws it is also possible to produce special short-cut pasta shapes such as paccheri (sachets) and long-cut candele (candles), ziti (hollow tubes) and fusilli bucati lunghi (long tubular spirals). Accurate hydration of ingredients

special CONFECTIONERY - BAKERY is guaranteed by the patented PremixŽ pre-mixing system with electronic regulation of the flow rates based on the set recipes, controlled by the PLC with touch screen: a great way to guarantee excellent production. The application of total vacuum in the tank and the variable profile compression systems complete the processing of the dough to give a yellower product with an improved texture of the cooked pasta. All presses have kneading tanks with paddles attached to the shafts without the use of bolts to guarantee easier cleaning, rounded internal corners and holes for draining of washing water, robust thrust bearing units and high-performance and long-lasting screws. Storci hasn’t just limited itself to testing its presses in the field of pasta production, it has extended its sphere of activity still further,
entering the confectionary sector for the production of sugar grains, liquorice and chocolate grains, and the pharmaceutical sector for the production of citrate based granular digestives. The continuous and constant study given to its presses over time also makes use of a laboratory which has been certified by the Italian Ministry of Higher Education and Research and is widely specialized in the extrusion sector. A further guarantee to testify to the hard work Storci has put into research

special CONFECTIONERY - BAKERY for many years in its own company. The latest innovations are the WD models, which are 100% washable for regular and constant manual cleaning, as prescribed by USDA standards, and built using construction materials which are resistant to the aggressive action of the chemical agents and/or steam used during sanitization procedures. WD, Washdown is the process of cleaning surfaces which come into contact with foodstuffs from top to bottom using detergent solutions applied using a high-pressure jet cleaner. Maximum speed in fitting and removal operations and, on the inside, raw material transfer units free from stagnation points, protruding bolts or any other components which could prove difficult to clean, facilitate these operations which are of great importance to production.

Walkways, steps and platforms and all structures which are usually horizontal are built following anti-slip criteria to prevent operator slipping hazards during washing operations. At the same time sloping surfaces are designed specifically to meet optimum washing water runoff to avoid stagnation points.

PURE ITALIAN STYLE
“P
uro stile italiano” is the slogan that Morello Forni srl, a young company in the huge world of bakery, pastry and pizza ovens, coming from Palermo (IT), has chosen to introduce itself to the USA market. Our story began in 2005 when Salvatore Morello, who has been working as a seller for several years, decided to start producing his own ovens by taking over a little factory. He put in his products the best synthesis between quality and price as he took the best of both these characteristics from his long experience in this field. A good example is represented by our oven Elektro, totally made in stainless 304; it generates a great quantity of steam (this is of fundamental importance in bread cooking), and has an easy maintenance. Each chamber is independent from the other one and the stones are made with granulated concrete; but the most important feature is the power control system, with a Solid State Relay that completely replaces mechanic contactors, thus assuring a better distribution of the electric power and a faster interaction between the upper resistance and the underlying one. Elektro also has an innovative design in order to emphasize the “Pure Italian Style”, and it is available in three colors: Black, White and Italian Red. Our company can also provide a wide set of ovens that could meet the needs of every baker. Deimos ovens, for example, are different in the height of the cooking chambers (f.e.: 18 cm , perfect for pastry, or 16 cm for pizzas). In particular our Deimos Pizza oven has refractory stones and works up to 400°C (750°F). Phocus is a traditional bakery oven with steam pipes. Its burning chamber is made in refractory stainless, and so

we have a sweet cooking. Morello Forni srl, can make Elektro, Phocus and Deimos in different sizes an cooking surfaces together with a great variety of other machines such as breadcrumbs grinders, rising cabinets and sifting
machines to make ricotta cheese cream and other pastry creams for sweets. We are very proud to say that Morello Forni srl represent in our country the new reality of Pure Italian Style with a Sicilian heart too.

he land around Piacenza is brimming with products, ideas and projects that have made this area an economic leader in many sectors. The motto ‘Placentia floret’ was often stamped on coins in the sixteenth century to highlight the flourishing agricultural activity that made this city a leader in contemporary food production. However it was only in the nineteenth century that advanced industrial technologies started to become fundamental to this level of excellence, enabling the more intrepid of its citizens to become businessmen, people who moulded the city’s history. This was the case with the Dallagiovanna family who, thanks to the determination of its great-great grandfather, made full use of the traditions of a land rich in cereals, mills and water. The Molino Dallagiovanna opened in 1832 with the acquisition of a stone mill and it developed over the subsequent one hundred and sixty years

thanks to continual modernisation that saw the installation of a first cylinder mill in 1949, followed by a second in 1960, a third in 1975 and finally the ultramodern ‘Bühler’ installed in 2001. Universal flours or flours specifically studied for the various culinary sectors - confectionary, pizza-making, pasta and bread, begin and end their journey in the Dallagiovanna laboratories: the one of research and analysis, where the best blends between grains are studied and the one of White Art, where the protagonist is the end product, created by the knowing hands of important Masters or tried and retried by the students of the Courses and the themed workshops organised by the Molino, also in collaboration with the principal training institutions. This story continues down to the present day, across two centuries of radical transformation and a progressive increase in production due to a high level of computerisation and the con-
stant commitment of Pierluigi, Sergio and Andrea. Today the business founded by Guido, Renzo and Vittorio Dallagiovanna offers over 50 blends, approved by international quality certifications and processed with the best production methods of every era. In line with technological advancement, production combines the right balance between tradition, innovation and respect for the environment.
OUR SPECIAL FLOURS - Classics Everything is special in Dallagiovanna’s flours: intuition in choosing the most suitable wheats, methods of analysis and research, best tradition processes and the most avant-guard machinery. Last but not least there are the Masters of the White Art Laboratory, important professionals and teachers in the leading schools in Europe, whom with their experience are fundamental for the continuous improvement of production.

THE SPECIAL FLOURS: 100% nature, 100% high quality
“ORIGINAL DALLAGIOVANNA” PRODUCTS
Our wheat comes exclusively from the EU, USA and Canada, and the majority is from Piacenza”KM. 0”. We also require a wheat passport from our suppliers, stating the origin and any treatments the grains were subjected to. The grains are stored naturally, with cool air and without pesticides. We are the only mill to wash grain using potable water, and once the kernel is adequately dampened, milling is even and slow, without ever damaging the starches and protein. Finally, we implement constant Quality Control, thanks to the professionals in our Production Department, our Analysis and Research Laboratory and the White Art Masters who work in constant collaboration to render every blend the perfect Flour.
Beware of imitations!
WHEAT WASHING The practice of washing is – or better was – used mainly to clean the wheat and to eliminate impurities before the milling process; the flour becomes whiter and the grains can be milled in a more homogeneous way. After a first air cleaning, grains are dipped in water for some hours, according to their properties. It is a very important process, now forgotten by big companies that prefers, for financial reasons, dry cleaning followed by conveyor conditioning. The Molino Dallagiovanna, along with few other small high-quality artisan producers, considers cleaning one of the key requirements for creating a superior flour, regardless of the extra costs and profit margins.

Milk is the most complete staple existing, since it contains in equal proportions all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals we need to grow
M
ilk is the most complete staple existing, since it contains in equal proportions all the nutrients, vitamins and minerals we need to grow. Processing milk into powder enables to overcome some limits to its use and transport, helping in spreading this very important staple in developing Countries, where the current logistic system cannot guarantee product quantity and quality. Milk powder is mainly used in baby foods, confectionery products, icecreams and baked goods. Anyway, making milk powder is a complex process that requires strict controls if hygiene and the preservation of milk organoleptic characteristics have to be guaranteed. Another important aspect to hold in due consideration is the fact that these plants, in order to be profitable from the industrial point of view, need to have large overall dimensions to treat about 100,000 litres of raw milk a day: this implies that stock farmers almost always don’t work individually, but they gather in farmers’ cooperatives able to reach a significant daily production of raw milk. The process of milk transformation into powder requires several phases: reception and storage, skimming and pasteurizing, concentration and drying are the most important. Firstly, raw milk is delivered by tankers from the various farms and is poured into cooling tanks. Low temperature is essential to control and prevent the bacteria that are usual-
ICF & WELKO FP.indd 3
ly present in milk from growing. In the next stage, most part of milk fat is separated by centrifugation (in case of skimmed milk production); then, pasteurization will follow. Pasteurization is a thermal process performed at high temperature mainly made to control the number of bacteria, increase the shelf-life of milk powder, increase its stability in case of reconstitution of milk in boiling water to get a high-
heat milk powder. Pasteurizer is composed of a heatexchangers system which allows to adjust temperature and downtime of milk in the heat-exchange aera. The concentration/evaporation phase decreases the water contents present in milk in the cheapest and most delicate way possible. Liquid milk usually has a solid contents of about 10% of its weight, and this percentage rises to about
22/07/13 16.47
BOTTLING
PLANTS
50% after the concentration process. Concentration is performed by a multiple-effect falling-film evaporator, where process temperatures are kept as low as possible so as not to alter the organoleptic characteristics of the final product. Concentrated milk is moved to the spray dryer for the final process stage. The transformation of the liquid product into powder takes place during spray drying. In this phase, concentrated milk is pumped into the drying chamber where it is atomized by nozzles or rotary disk and comes into contact with hot air. The thermal exchange favours water evaporation, thus forming particles of solid material which are then collected in the final part of the chamber. Once left the drying chamber, the powder has such moisture and temperature incompatible with packing; therefore, the product is conveyed onto a fluidized bed with cold de-humidified air in order to cool and stabilize the powder. At the outlet of the fluid bed, the product is ready to be packed. The cleaning system is of fundamental importance to the whole process and has to be included in any step if we want to keep suitable sanitary standards. A C.I.P. system

is usually used, composed of both C.I.P. kitchens and spraying nozzles. The C.I.P. system must be designed so as to avoid any crossed product/ washing solutions contamination. vantium, a renewable chemicals company, and ALPLA Werke Alwin Lehner GmbH, one of the world’s leading plastic converters, today announced their Joint Development Agreement for the development of PEF bottles. After The Coca-Cola Company and Danone, ALPLA is the third company to collaborate with Avantium on PEF, a bioplastic based on Avantium’s proprietary YXY technology. The goal of these collaborations is to bring 100% biobased PEF bottles to the market by 2016. “Avantium is very excited to have ALPLA enter the Joint Development Platform for PEF bottles,” says Tom van Aken, CEO Avantium. “With ALPLA’s extensive and proven know-how in PET conversion, bottle design and bottle manufacturing, ALPLA will be a major contributor to accelerate the commercial roll out and industrialization of PEF. Jointly we can make PEF available for packaging in innovative markets and traditional applications. Together we have taken up the challenge to develop the supply chain for PEF as sustainable biobased packaging material to the beer and alcoholic beverage markets. As one of the world’s most innovative converters, ALPLA will be a key enabler to develop PEF bottles meeting the technical requirements for the market.” Günther Lehner, ALPLA CEO comments: “By signing this agreement ALPLA once again demonstrates its leadership in innovation in this industry. In the 1980’s ALPLA was the first to introduce the two step PET bottle which started the transition from PVC to PET. Today we are able to take innovation a step further and introduce our customers in the food, home care and personal care area to the next generation of biobased polyester: PEF. Sustainability is a key driver for growth for ALPLA and its customers. We are therefore pleased to collaborate with Avantium

materials like PET (polyethylene terephthalate), to biobased materials. Biobased materials should be compliant with existing recycling solutions. The YXY technology platform is a cost competitive ground-breaking catalytic technology to convert plant based materials into chemical building blocks for bioplastics, like PEF (polyethylene furanoate). PEF is a novel generation of 100% biobased and recyclable polyester which has the potential to replace conventional fossil resources based durable materials like PET. PEF has properties superior to PET such as a significantly higher barrier to oxygen, carbon dioxide and water, extending product shelf life and redu-
PEF bottles ALPLA will develop PEF bottles for Personal Care/ Home Care applications, such as cosmetics and detergents and for Food applications such as sauces, dressings, baby foods and edible oils. ALPLA and Avantium will furthermore work on the development of bottles for beer and other alcoholic beverages. Today Avantium is supplying its development partners with PEF manufactured from material produced at its Geleen pilot plant. Avantium is currently planning a 50,000 ton commercial plant, which is projected to be operational in 2016 to enable the full commercial launch of the first PEF bottles to consumers.

GERNEP GMBH LABELLING SYSTEMS, AT“DRINKTEC 2013”
T
he in all industries well-established manufacturer of labeling machines “GERNEP”, from southern Germany, presents the latest technologies and developments in the range of various rotary labeling systems on the “drinktec 2013”. In the state of art self adhesive labeling, GERNEP is well prepared for the future. The machine series LABETTA SK has been completely revised and is reflecting both, a new look and new technological developments, particularly in the area of the optical orientation issue. GERNEP with this development is ideally suited to take challenges in labeling of all sectors of industry. The proven servo motor technology on self-adhesive dispenser helps to ensure a precise and especially smooth-running transfer of the label to the container, even in container deepening or on container increases. Innovative and exclusive label designs are similarly feasible as well as the applying of no-label-look or waterproof plastic labels. The system of wet glue labelling is covered by GERNEP with its series LA-
GERNEP FP 4-13.indd 3
BETTA. Significant advantages of the innovative wet glue labelling aggregates are the patented overlay gearbox for easy adjustment of the exact label position, as well as the single, three-dimensionally adjustable glue segments. The wet glue labelling is tradition at GERNEP. Wet glue machines were and are the mainstay of GERNEP. Especially in the brewery area in which the important wet-glue system is domiciled, GERNEP was and is an authentic partner. The wet glue technology in the home of GERNEP is subject to a constant development and revision. For the hot melt wrap around labeling for different containers, the labeling machines ROLLFED and ROLLINA are designed. The type ROLLFED is used for the labeling of plastic labels from the roll and ROLLINA for paper labels from the magazine. The glue application of both labelling systems results from a closed hot melt unit. Because of this closed hot melt system any contamination of glue is avoided in the hot melt circulation and minimizes the cleaning and maintenance. The hot glue of the GERNEP ROLLI-
NA is economically applied onto the container by nozzles. The end gluing occurs through a stepless adjustable end-gluing edge at the end of the label magazine. Technical at the highest level is the solution of glue application for the ROLLFED system. Hot melt is applied contact-free and selective at the beginning and at the end of the label via nozzles while it´s on the vacuum drum. The end gluing takes place by a stepless adjustable gluing edge and an end gluing plate on the transfer drum. The convenient control of bottle rotation offers a changeover to other container formats within a minimum of time. Especially flexible is the combination of wet glue, self adhesive and hot melt labelling. To meet all requirements of the processing industry GERNEP developed the series GERNEP COMBI. The compact arrangement of several different labelling systems provides the customer nearly unlimited labeling varieties. One of the biggest advantages of different labeling systems on a machine table is an absolutely short changeover time. Labelling systems can be switched on or off. All GERNEP labeling machines can be equipped with various container orientation systems on bottom notch, side notch, eye mark, relief or bottle seam. At customer’s request they can be additionally equipped with seal labelling in L- or U-shape, either in adhesive or wet glue. For flexible use of different container formats or rather maximal flexibility for the future GERNEP offers alternatively for all labeling machines servo controlled bottle plates. Referring to this reliable product range of labelling technology, GERNEP is the perfect partner for modern labelling.

INLINE MEASUREMENT OF COLD WORT PROCESS ANALYSIS IN BREWERIES
W
hile in the brewhouse of a brewery the wort is produced from malt, water and hops, the preparation of the wort for the following fermentation is performed in the downstream fermenting room. In order to avoid building beer-spoiling microorganisms, the hot wort must achieve the pitching temperature as soon as possible. Typically, the hot wort will be cooled down to 7 to 9°C so that the yeast can ferment efficiently. Most of the breweries use closed cooling systems. A plate heat exchanger (plate cooler) consisting of thin, closely spaced metal plates ensures the rapid cooling. They are alternatively passed through wort and cooling water. This process causes a cold break with tiny particles in the first plain wort. The turbidity has an influence on the velocity of fermentation and maturation, because particles attach themselves to the yeast cells that become smeared. Repeated use
MASTRO FP.indd 3
of yeast, the cold break will be removed to avoid an increasing smearing. In addition, the velocity of fermentation depends on the oxygen content in the wort. The ventilation of the cold wort for increasing yeast occurs only once during the entire beer production with a targeted oxidation. Sterile air is atomized finely and mixed with cold wort in a turbulent manner. The oxygen consumption is caused by the yeast and does not influence the wort quality. When the cold wort leaves the cooling chamber, the actual beer production with fermentation, maturation and filtration is taking place. Before starting this process, an inline measurement of cold wort concentration is offered for ensuring process safety and optimal wort quality. In addition, the inline measurement provides a reliable wort-water-separation in case of rinsing processes. In order to cope with these tasks, the Colbitzer Heidebrauerei deci-
ded to use the inline measuring system called LiquiSonic® Plato manufactured by the company SensoTech. In this case, an immersion type sensor with Varivent connection was installed after the cooler directly in a DN50 pipe by meeting the requirements of hygienic and bypass-free installation. Immersion type sensor and controller of the inline measuring system “LiquiSonic® Plato“ “Before mixing the wort with yeast („pitching“), it is important to check the original gravity content again due to quality reasons. If this is ensured, the beer production can run in the fermenting room. Additionally, valuable liter of beer can be gained by detecting an overdosing, explains Brew Master, Birgit Diesing. “But also the exact phase separation of first and last running is mandatory.” The immersion type sensor of the LiquiSonic® Plato system is completely made of stainless steel and is working maintenance-free for a long period. A special highly efficient technology provides reliable measuring values even at high contents of gas bubbles. The determination of concentration is based on the sonic velocity measurement that guarantees a precise, drift- and failure-free measurement. With the help of a proven mathematic model, it is possible to calculate precisely the wort concentration
MASTRO FP.indd 4
resulting from the value of sonic velocity. The controller included in the system performs the calculation. Controller and sensor are connected via a bus cable, whereas the controller can handle up to four sensors and so four measuring points can be connected. Further inline measurements of original gravity are possible, for example, at the lauter tun, wort boiler, filter or filler. (picture 2) The controller visualizes the measuring data and is used for making settings and configurations done by the user. The TFT color display with high contrast enables an intuitive and clearly structured menu navigation. Calibration can also be performed, even by remote access to the controller via modem or Internet. This remote access option allows the user to monitor and configure the system from everywhere. The controller can manage up to 256 types of beer with the appropriate calculation models. For each
type of beer, it is possible to define a tolerance range with displaying an alarm in case of exceeding the limits. When connecting the controller to the PCS, measures can be taken afterwards. Process trends can be monitored with the trend view provided by the device. It is connected to data log that stores up to 15,000 datasets. Therefore, processes and measuring values are documented traceably and can be analyzed afterwards. The Colbitzer Heidebrauerei installed a controller with a stainless steel housing. “Not only the high measuring accuracy of ± 0.05 °Pl and the reliability of LiquiSonic® Plato convinced us, but also the user friendliness. After installation of the sensor, the controller showed immediately the actual wort concentration. We are so satisfied that we decided to install further measuring points, for example, at the filler for monitoring and controlling the phase separation“, emphasizes Birgit Diesing.

CHILLED NFC JUICES: THE BERTUZZI APPROACH
T
he market of fruit juice is developing quite rapidly and the share of NFC juices is considerably increasing because of their high quality. In Europe and the US (but also in whole world) 100% juice (not from concentrate) category is showing a strong growth potential. Of particular importance, in this sector, are the chilled juice, fruit juices that are prepared directly from the fresh fruit and then are just chilled and filled or slightly pasteurized and chilled in order to retain all organolectic characteristics. The majority of the chilled juice found in the shops shelfs is based on orange but other varieties like pineapple, grapefruit, carrots as well as blends (orange-carrot, orangepineapple, carrot-lemon-pineapple etc.) are becoming more and more popular. The main hints for the design of a plant processing fresh fruit into chilled juices are: Optimization of flow of fruit/juice Optimization of characteristics of process equipment Optimization of processing cycles in order to: 1. Decrease processing times 2. Minimize oxidation of the juice 3. Keep high organolectic characteristics Optimize CIP system to control the
BERTUZZI FP 3/13.indd 3
microbiology of the juice. Some of the machines used for the application are dedicated for a certain type of fruit, for istance: Dedicated citrus juice extractors (orange, lemons, grapefruit), in order to minimize the essential oil content in the juice and assure a good control of the pulp. Deshellers and dedicated presses for pomegranate to produce cloudy or clear juice which importance is considerably increasing for the beneficial health characteristics. Dedicated pineapple juicing in order to obtain high quality juice only from the edible part of the fruit without contamination with the peel. These are some examples but few. Extractors for juice/puree can be provided for apples, carrots, pears, passion fruit, banana, beets, mango, spinach, asparagus, berries, hawthorns, guava etc. The obtained juice is immediately (blended or not) slightly pasteurized (65-70°C) and chilled before filling. All these examples of equipment have been designed, built and put in operation by Bertuzzi Food Processing Srl, an Italian Company that operates in this field since 1936 and that supplies plants and machines to process fruit and vegetables to produce juice, concentrates, baby food, jam, readymade drinks etc…

dence of the company’s thorough and targeted managerial policy, which aims to have a team of professional people whose main target is offering their customers reliable, accurate and efficient solutions. The company’s technological commitment can be found in a machine called Duett, which is the first dualvision sorting machine for fresh salads proposed by Protec; it enables examining produce on either sides, indicating defects or foreign
bodies. In addition to this, some cameras and an exclusive visual and fluorescent lighting system allows identifying the chlorophyll that all vegetables usually have. Polluting agents, such as plastic, paper, cardboard and insects as well, can be easily kept apart. The particular configuration of the inclined conveyor belt enables separating defective produce by means of air jets. The visual system makes use of the most up-to-date electro-

nic technology and exclusive software for processing images. Duett can be easily put in production lines because not only is it waterproof but also resistant to the usual cleansing sanification products. Protec has always focused on technological innovation and the investments of the past years have enabled the company’s team of engineers and designers to perfect this new technology at one of the most important European producers of IV range produce. To this regard, it is worth of special mention the fact that in addition to being a leading company on the market, Protec is also leader in tomato sorting, and in the past years it has developed high technology for IV range products, such as ready salads, corn, peas, and more. In addition to tomatoes, it is now possible to sort whole fruit, tomato and fruit pulp, extrusions, purees, jams, leaf vegetables (fresh or dehydrated), legumes, diced fruit and potatoes (in almost every form). As a result, a simple product such as a tin of peas or a pot of jam, which people buy everyday, embodies a high-level technology aimed at achieving the highest quality, the one that Protec has always targeted UVA. Protec is happy to present the X-TRI line, optical ari-jet sorter for winemaking grapes. The development is the result of efficient investment. Protec, a company which has been active since

Belt elevators may be needed to connect between different levels. How x-tri functions: the fruit exiting the destemmer is distributed on the vibrating mat, in preparation for feeding the optical unit. The optical sensor recognises the different defects (stalks, leaves, leaf stems, insects and foreign matter) and expels them using a jet of air. The good produce is discharged directly for subsequent processing

into the pressing unit. The optical system also makes it possible to recognise less ripe fruit (having a different colour), which can also be expelled along with the other defects. The defects to be rejected can be programmed using a touch screen. The x-tri line can handle up to approximately 15 t/hr of grapes. The capacity depends on a number of factors, such as the type of grape, the degree of ripeness, the number of defects, etc. For more information, please to contact: Mr. Rocco Sandei (sales manager) r.sandei@ protec-italy.com

WIXTA Industries Srl and FENCO SPA are glad to announce that the first lab scale prototype for the FCHR pasteurization and homogenization process has been implemented and the tests on milk and juices started.
FCHR:
Fluid foods pasteurizer and homogenizer based on Centrifugal Hydrocavitation Reactor
T
he FCHR project, submitted in the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission under the ‘Research for the Benefit of SMEs’ call on 6th December 2011 has received funding from the Research Executive Agency and officially started on 1st September 2012.
The FCHR Consortium › WIXTA INDUSTRIES, as Project Coordinator and first proposer of the FCHR technology › FENCO, the industrial partner manufacturing food processing plants › ELECTRICARS, company located in Malta, responsible for electronics and control system, of the reactor › EPLEBLOMSTEN, Norwegian producer of apple juices, › GLENILEN FARM, Irish dairy industrie
› The research of the FCHR project will be carried out with the support of the RTD performers University College of Cork, Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata and Labor Srl.
The Project Objectives In FCHR project we propose the implementation of an integrated pasteurizing and homogenizing system for fluid foods based on an alternative approach induced only by mechanical means: controlled
hydrodynamic cavitation, which consists in the generation of huge amounts of energy in the form of shock waves, due to the turbulence produced in a fluid by pressure fluctuations. This means that the pasteurisation process can be carried out at low temperature preserving the nutritional content and quality of food The growing need for innovation addressed by the project is mainly related to the customers’ need for novel, more efficient and more sustainable

food treatment processes › This innovative FCHR process thus aims at bringing the following advantages to the dairy and the Food & Drink EU companies: › Preservation of food quality : being the process carried out practically without heating the product, the organoleptic aspects will be preserved › Energy saving: in terms of electrical power and calories with respect to the actual milk and juices processor; › High scalability: the system will be easily scalable, with potential for use of parallel reactors with flow rates of several thousand liters per hour.
Our preliminary results As a conclusion of the first period of the project, we are proud to announce that the preliminary FCHR prototype for laboratory tests on the microbiological and chemical/physical properties of the processed food has been designed and implemented. This R&D activity carried out in the first 9 months of the project
implementation was supported by the parallel work of the Italian RTD performer UTV (Università degli studi di Roma Tor Vergata), which developed a numerical model for simulating the fluid-dynamics inside the reactor, and a parametric 3D model of the conceptual geometrical features of the reactor. This allowed the Consortium to adapt the existing designs available to the Project Coordinator Wixta, taking into account the specifications setup with the industrial partners at the very beginning of the project. This led to a new, food-oriented design of the reactor constituting the core of the prototype. The prototype, assembled and pre-tested by the Italian performer LABOR, is now placed in Cork, at the School of Food and Nutritional Science Department of the University College, where the RTD performer UCC will carry out preliminary tests on milk and juices. The main objective of the tests sessions which are currently under development in Cork is that of trying

different operative conditions for the pasteurization and homogenization process and to acquire information from the analyses potentially guiding the design of the final industrial FCHR prototype, expected at the end of the project. The tests will also permit to perform evaluations on the FCHR machine efficiency in processing high protein and high viscosity fluid foods, and to assess this innovative technology both from a technical and en economical point of view.
Next steps of the FCHR project From June 2013 on, the FCHR Consortium will be involved in a continuative tests activity, supporting and driving the final design of the reactor which is expected in February 2014, together with the simulation work that will suggest modifications or improvements of the reactor shape and geometry enhancing the pasteurization and homogenization processes for different types of fluid foods.

QUADRANT EPP PRESENTS UNIQUE PERMANENT ANTISTATIC TIVAR® CLEANSTAT WHITE FOR PHARMA AND FOOD PROCESSING
Q
uadrant Engineering Plastic Products (EPP) launches the first FDA compliant and ATEX tested thermoplastic with permanent antistatic performance for pharmaceutical and food applications. New ultrahigh-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) TIVAR® CleanStat White is unique in combining good electrostatic dissipation (ESd), excellent wear resistance and food contact compliancy in a neutral / white colored material. TIVAR CleanStat White addresses the increasing hygiene and safety demands of the pharmaceuticals and drugs processing industry, including conformity to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) handling requirements and compliance with ATEX Directive 94/9/EC. The product responds to consumers’

general association of white with purity and cleanliness. The UHMWPE has been developed to benefit specific applications, such as guiders for pill filling, drug pressing applications, pistons and valves for powder dosing, labeling and printing equipment. For the food processing & packaging sector it is also suitable for linings in sugar and flour processing, guiders for pudding weighing and filling, as well as conveyor parts. TIVAR CleanStat White is the only white product on the market to permanently prevent the build-up of charge or static load caused by powder handling and friction of plastic surfaces, over a proven period of more than two years1. It overcomes the partially static dissipative properties of antistatic agents, traditionally added to plastic machine
parts, which fail over time through repeat use, handling and cleaning. Furthermore, in tests according to ATEX Directive 94/9/EC for explosion groups I and II, the plastic sample of TIVAR CleanStat White had a surface resistance of up to 429 M Ohms: significantly below the limit of 1G Ohm. As a result the innovation avoids the potential for explosion and contamination, which leads to increased safety and lower costs in maintenance and production. Being light in color TIVAR CleanStat White also avoids visible contamination with debris particles that can discolor pills and lozenges over time. The material can be tailor made to additional light colors without losing its ESd or food contact compliancy. The latest addition to Quadrant EPP’s TIVAR range, new

THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC UPGRADES XPERT C400 X-RAY SYSTEM
Higher-powered X-ray, compact sanitary drum motors, shorter line configurations
T
hermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced several upgrades for its popular Thermo Scientific Xpert C400 X-ray system for detecting metals and other foreign objects in food. The upgrades include an X-ray source with twice the power of the original model, compact sanitary drum motors and shorter line configurations. The X-ray power boost makes the system well suited for thicker, denser product and/or higher speed production. The new capability further enhances the unit’s leading inspection sensitivity to help food processors meet stringent foreign object detection goals. The system targets a broad range of food applications including challenging wet, semi-frozen products, as well as metalized packaging structures that do not lend themselves to metal detection. The Thermo Scientific Xpert™ C400 also features a new compact sanitary drum motor to drive its conveyor. The drum is designed to improve safety and performance, minimize maintenance requirements and simplify sanitation by enclosing all moving parts. Because the drum motor is part of the conveyor framework, the unit takes up less floor space. “Food processors demand a high level of performance from their pro-
Thermo Scientific FP.indd 3
duct inspection equipment. Also high on the list of deliverables is equipment that can perform within a smaller footprint to maximize use of valuable floor space. The new Xpert C400 upgrades reflect Thermo Fisher’s continual investment in product inspection enhancements designed to meet customer needs,” said Bob Ries, lead product manager, metal detection and X-ray inspection, Thermo Fisher. The Thermo Scientific Xpert C400 detects metal, glass, dense plastics and other contaminants in packaged food. The system also can analyze an X-ray image to estimate weight and fill or determine whether a packaged item has missing objects. The system’s highly sensitive detectors are available in multiple resolutions (0.8/0.4mm), and its suite of algorithms is designed to find small contaminants in complex images with few, if any, false rejects. “A variety of food safety initiatives are driving the migration from metal detection to X-ray technology. With many leading food retailers now mandating that their products be inspected by X-ray before being placed on store shelves, the Xpert C400 is designed for plants desiring a reliable mid-to-high level X-
ray inspection system,” said Ries. Due to its improved design and component quality, the Thermo Scientific Xpert C400 is designed to run around the clock in harsh environments with less maintenance and fewer repairs than other systems. It was internally tested by Thermo Fisher to fully meet IP65 requirements for dust and washdown and operates over a wide 5° to 40° C temperature range. Because of its modular design and built-in remote support capability, technicians can troubleshoot and service the system quickly, minimizing expensive downtime.

KEMPER BRINGS DURABLE FILTER TECHNOLOGY ON THE MARKET WITH THE NEW PLASMAFIL › Service life of the innovative filters nearly unlimited › Especially designed for plasma cutting machines › voestalpine already convinced at the market launch
V
reden 25/02/13 – Thanks to innovative filter technology with increased efficiency in air pollution control: With PlasmaFIL, KEMPER GmbH presents a solution with an extremely long useful life and filter service life. The system is particularly suitable for the elimination of large quantities of dust specifically in plasma cutting. Thanks to its special design, regular overhauls of the filter are not necessary. From the moment it came on the market, the manufacturer already recorded its first sales success. “With our new product, PlasmaFIL, we are closing a very important gap in the market”, says Managing Director, Bjorn Kemper. “Thanks to its special way of functioning, the useful life of the filter cartridge is extended significantly.” Regular filter changes are no longer required. Service lifetimes are nearly unlimited.
Newly developed plate filter, a central element The core of the new system is an innovative plate filter with a special coating, which also cleanses the air of ultra-fine dust particles. Due to the flow of untreated air in the top of the filter system with the down-flow principle, the filter was designed like a plate and not like a cylinder, as was previously the case. This has
KEMPER FP.indd 3

the following advantage: Contrary to the round filter cartridge design, the individual pleats in the filter do not move on top of each other, which prevents them from sticking together. In this way, the entire surface of the filter is used in the filtering process. “Due to the possibility of filtering large amounts of dust with PlasmaFIL, the new filter system was developed specifically for use in plasma cutting machines”, emphasizes Kemper. The integrated spark pre-separator, SparkTRAP, also contributes here. Through the pre-separation of coarse dust particles and sparks, it prevents filter fires and reduces the level of strain on the filter. Positive side effect: Energy consumption of the filter system is considerably reduced and the service life of the filter is extended.
Contamination-free dust removal Compared with conventional filter systems, PlasmaFIL does not even

use a dust container. With DustEVAC, KEMPER relies on a vacuumbased disposal for the PlasmaFIL. The dust is collected in a high capacity BigBag. This enables contamination-free disposal and can, contrary to conventional containers, be changed during the cutting process without having to interrupt the work. With the installation of a separate, silenced ventilator, the noise pollution can also be kept at a low level. Users operate and monitor the system via a central touch screen. It is even possible to communicate with the plant engineering department or to integrate it into the software of connected equipment. A start-stop function is integrated as a standard feature.

success of the high-end extraction solution. “This innovative filter concept has convinced us with its very high service lifetimes”, says Walter Radinger, Process Manager of Cut Shapes at the Austrian company voestalpine Anarbeitung GmbH, a full subsidiary of the publicly-listed company, voestalpine AG. At the moment, there is no other comparable plate filter solution on the market. “We anticipate that with the help of this new system, we can considerably reduce the otherwise usual operating costs of our filter systems.” The metal-processing company can even use the new filter system completely without having to purchase it, thanks to the new sales concept at KEMPER. Instead of purchasing the systems, interested parties may also rent them from the manufacturer. In conjunction with the filter’s service life guarantee and full service contracts, consequential costs remain low and can be accurately calculated.

Qimarox introduces unique order picking system ‘Collect & Sort’
AUTOMATIC ORDER PICKING WITH PRORUNNER MK5
Q
imarox has developed a new automated order picking system ‘Collect & Sort’, which can handle up to a thousand products, containers, or cartons per hour. Central to this system is the Prorunner mk5, the successful vertical transport system from the company that evolved from Nedpack in 2012. Products from conveyor channels at different levels are fed out fully automatically and placed on the correct outfeed conveyor in the direction of the forwarding department or palletising station. Qimarox’ ‘Collect & Sort’ automated order picking system consists of several levels of conveyor channels in which products can be stored. A short roller conveyor module moves back and forth at the front of the conveyor channels on each level. This module retrieves the items in the correct order from the conveyor channels and transports them to the Prorunner mk5, the vertical transport system of Qimarox. This system receives the products from all levels and places them in the correct order on one or more outfeed conveyors. These outfeed conveyors then send the products to a palletising station, or directly to the forwarding department. Approximately 15 channels can be served per level by a roller conveyor module; the Prorunner mk5 can reach a maximum height of 15 metres and the number of levels can thus be extended to about 20 levels. This brings the total of pick locations up to 300. The ‘Collect & Sort’ system by Qimarox has a high capacity because of the use of the rapid Prorummer mk5, especially in comparison with existing shuttle systems where the traditional product elevator is often a bottleneck. The standard Prorunner mk5 can easily reach
ORDER PICKING FP 3/13.indd 3
a capacity of 2000 products per hour. This system is a smart investment, particularly in situations with a relatively limited number of pick locations and can achieve a capacity of approximately 1000 products per hour. In addition to using it as an order picking system, this innovative Qimarox product can also be used as a sequencer in mixed palletising systems. The conveyor channels are then randomly filled with products at the front. They are then fed out at the rear, in the order in which the mixed palletiser wants to receive them.
Logical development The automated order picking system is yet another application of the Prorummer mk5, the successful Qimarox product lift using the time-tested paternoster principle. Thanks to its patented design, all products remain in an upright position during the entire circulation. The Prorunner mk5 is ideal for vertical sorting since it is possible to transport products from multiple infeed destinations to multiple outfeed destinations. The order picking system is a logical development of the application of the Prorunner mk5 as a vertical sorting system. The short, movable roller conveyor modules in this application are used for the infeed and outfeed of products. Normally, these modules have only two positions: one position for an infeed conveyor to receive a product and one position in the circuit of the Prorunner mk5 to supply the product to the vertical sorting system. By replacing the pneumatic drive with a servomotor,
Qimarox succeeded in extending the carriageway of the modules considerably. This means that the modules can now receive products at a plurality of positions, rather than in only one. In the order picking system, this principle was applied to feed out products from different conveyor channels.
Low maintenance and economical The automatic ‘Collect & Sort’ system is suitable for products, containers, or boxes of at least 200 x 200 and up to 600 x 600 mm, and that weigh no more than 50 kg. A special XL model can handle products up to 900 x 900 mm. Thanks to the minimal number of moving parts and the enclosed drive system, the Prorunner mk5 is very low maintenance, also when applied as automated order picking systems. Because the system keeps itself in balance, the motor only has to propel the product to be transported, and not the product carrier. The system can therefore be operated at a low motor capacity, resulting in considerable savings when compared to other lift systems. The Prorunner mk5 is already being used in hundreds of production plants and warehouses. Users are located all over the world, from Sweden to Chile and Canada to South Korea and many other countries.

capacity to combine a wide-reaching vision on the international markets, with an all-round idea of innovation: innovation in terms of technology, of sustainability, of design and lifestyle, new formats and market insight. A combination that during the five-day exhibition provides a hands-on experience, making attendance at Host 2013 a real must for all the key players in the trade. Host is a reference point, with the companies themselves providing confirmation and testimony of this: in October more than 1,600 exhibitors will be there from 50 Countri-
es – including over 250 new entry companies, against the 191 at the end of Host 2011. In particular, 40% of the exhibitors come from foreign companies, strengthening the increasing trend of internationalisation characterising Host. “Consolidated in its industry as the global reference in the business and innovation platform,” comments Enrico Pazzali, CEO of Fiera Milano Spa, “Host represents the best of the Group’s internationalisation strategy, the linchpin of its future, which is also developed by systematising our resources. An example of this is Food Hospitality

The agreement between Fiera Milano and Expo 2015 for the Cluster project is another step in this direction”. “In Host 2013,” adds Michele Perini, President of Fiera Milano Spa, “its capacity to innovate across the board is expressed in particular through its attentive approach to new formats. Now more than ever, in a market that is constantly evolving and characterised by rapid changes in consumer styles, it is fundamental for the trade to develop formats in the retail industry that provide an effective response to the new demands of consumers, making the most of technology, layouts and marketing and sales strategies. Host 2013 does it with highly innovative tools, also through its partnerships with key industry players”. In line with a concept designed to take advantage of supply chain proximities, the exhibition layout of Host 2013 will be organised in 12 pavilions and broken down into three macro-areas: Food service equipment with Bread, Pizza, Pasta; Bar & Coffee machines with Coffee&Tea and Gelato-Pastry; Furniture and Tableware. Successful tandem event: drink technology India and International PackTech India line up for the start together for the third time in a row
TWO INDUSTRIES ONE TRADE SHOW

wo industries, one joint exhibition platform: That is the success formula of drink technology India and International PackTech India. These two events are teaming up together for the third time in succession in the Indian city of Mumbai between September 25 and 27, 2014. On show under one roof at the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Center will be products and solutions from and for the International packaging, packaging print, processing, beverages and food industries. For the first time, therefore, these two events will be covering the food-processing segment. Applications are now invited for companies interested in exhibiting at these two events. Online applications for drink technology India can be sent to www.drinktechnologyindia.com and for International PackTech India to: www.packtech-india. com. Hall 1 at the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Center, offering 11,000 square meters of space, is reserved for these two trade events. The organizers of the two shows – Messe Düsseldorf, responsible for International PackTech India and Messe München International, for drink technology India – are expecting a total of at least 260 exhibitors (2012: 220 exhibitors) to register for these two events in 2014. And, in view of the ongoing boom in the markets of India and its neighboring states, they are also expecting a significant increase in the number of visitors. 7,500 trade professionals attended the last event in November 2012, and 8,500 are forecast for 2014.
Combined expertise of drinktec and interpack The exhibitors and visitors at these two events benefit from the experti-

se of not one but two of the world´s top exhibition companies, and from the synergy effects between the packaging, beverages and food/liquid food industries. With the inclusion of food processing into the spectrum covered by drink technology India, this area is now represented in full at the event duo in Mumbai. Supporting the quality and success of International PackTech India and drink technology India are the two big events held in Germany by the trade-fair companies of Düsseldorf and Munich: interpack, the leading international trade fair for processing and packaging in Düsseldorf (next dates: May 8-14, 2014), and drinktec, the “World´s Leading Trade Fair for the Beverage and Liquid Food Industry” in Munich (next dates: September 16-20, 2013). Like these parent events in Germany, drink technology India and International PackTech India cover the entire process chain in their respective sectors, but with the difference that the events in Mumbai present solutions and technologies specially tailored to the Indian market. Both trade fairs target top and middle management: decision-makers from the boardrooms and also technical experts in production and R&D.
Trade-fair duo covers all segments This trade-fair duo is the largest event on the subcontinent that informs on the entire spectrum of the packaging, packaging print, processing, beverages, food and liquid food industries. For the first time drink technology India is now also covering the area of food processing in its portfolio.
The nomenclature for the event was therefore extended to include a section on “Technology for food processing”. This includes machinery and equipment for foods of all kinds – for example for confectionery and sweet products, for meat, fruit and vegetables and for milk processing. The exhibitors in this section have the benefit of a special presentation platform. The reason for extending the product range is that there are ever more places of intersection in the manufacture and processing of beverages, liquid food and food. In a survey conducted during drink technology India and International PackTech India in 2012 as many as 28 percent of the visitors stated that they were also interested in food processing. That underlines the need for such a platform. In India per-capita consumption of packaged beverages and food is still very low. However, expenditure on these products has doubled in the last five years – and that trend is continuing.
Packaged foods: 27-percent growth forecast over four years The food and beverages industry is among the strongest growing sectors on the Indian subcontinent. Consistent, and comparatively high growth figures for the economy, rising incomes, expanding, highspending middle classes, a high proportion of young people in the population, increasing urbanization and widespread modern retail concepts (supermarkets and hypermarkets) are all factors that will continue to boost demand over the coming years for processed and hygienically packaged food and drink.

iquid flows generated by technological elements that symbolically create the world and, in the middle, a bottle speaking about future. Technology, innovation, internationality. The new image of Simei 2013 is served. In the year of its 50 years SIMEI (www.simei.it) will indeed have a restyling, i.e. a new look for all its communication and promotion materials, telling the most significant elements of this trade show in a contemporary and creative way, to strongly reaffirm its distinctive and founding features. A communication will be activated which can highlight its leading role in the panorama of the world exhibition events and its positioning as an international leader in wine and bottling technologies. “SIMEI – explains Massimo Paglia-
rin, Creative Director of the Agency Yess! (www.yess.it) who took care of the graphic project for Unione Italiana Vini - is a trade show with a very important history, it is an international leader in its sector. Therefore, the first element, on which attention has been focused, was highlighting this leadership. In order to do this, contemporary graphic elements have been used to tell this message and give an immediate communication of it. The earth globe, the world, which stresses the international relevance of SIMEI, is ideally and symbolically outlined by beverages: water, juices and wine”.
The visual – surely a very strong and high-impact communication – seems ideally divided into one upper and one lower part … Yes, the composition indeed consists of descriptive elements in the lower part, represented by pictures of mechanical elements, such as the button “On”, which refers to technology and mechanics, without highlighting a precise product category, in full respect of the extremely varied offer of items shown at the exhibition. On the other hand, the upper part
CS FP 2/13.indd 3
is more symbolic. In the central position, the bottle, made up of a green and blue neon, - a sort of optical fibre -, is projecting into the future, into innovation. Innovation is connected with machines that are a part of today and, most of all, of tomorrow. The bottle calls to mind that this trade show is a meeting point for the beverage production chain, leaving room to the various typologies of drinks that are represented by this symbolic image.
What about the lettering part? How was it managed? With regard to the stylistic choice, we opted for a font called Nexa that, at the moment, is used worldwide and belongs to the sans-serif family. It is a font having an element linked with the past, but at the same time, bringing innovation. Also the lettering is thus recalling a communication of historical past, a tradition that looks into the future, an innovation that is leader, also because it has deeply roots in the past.

ussia has developed into one of the most lucrative markets for the consumer goods industry. The Russian Federation, the most populous country in Europe with a population of approx. 143 million, is among the most important sales markets for the food, beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries and their products. The growing middle class and increasing prosperity have resulted in a change of consumer and shopping patterns. There is an emerging interest in novel, modern, processed and packaged foods and beverages. This development stimulates the Russian packaging market and the demand for innovative machinery and technologies producing materials for packaging solutions in all sectors - from the food industry and the cosmetics and pharmaceuticals sector to the chemical and consumer goods industries. Despite its growing food industry, Russia is one of the biggest importers of meat, dairy products and fruit. To develop its autonomy in these sectors and to guarantee western product performance as well, there is an increasing focus on food processing machinery, packaging processes and packaging designs. Whether it is hygiene, storage or design, packaging and process technologies play an important role. The suppliers of these machines benefit from this development. Foreign and Russian producers invest in modern and flexible machinery to offer consumer-oriented product performance.

German-Russian relations in the mechanical engineering sector have been in existence for decades. German suppliers of foodstuffs and packaging machinery have benefited from their good reputation as manufacturers of high-quality machinery. For products requiring highquality engineering, Russian buyers hold the “Made in Germany” brand in high esteem. Ms Vera Fritsche from the Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association (Fachverband Nahrungsmittel- und Verpackungsmaschinen), a division of VDMA the German Engineering Association (Verband Deutscher Maschinen- und Anlagenbau e.V., VDMA) sees a continued high potential in the Russian market: “Germany is Russia’s main supplier country for food machinery and packaging machinery accounting for a 34% share in total imports.

For German manufacturers Russia is the third biggest single sales market for this machinery after the USA and China. Exports achieved a total volume of EUR 446 million over the first ten months of 2012. German companies support the Russian industry in extension and modernisation projects with their know-how and state-of-the-art technology. The expectations of German exhibitors regarding UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA have been fulfilled. Visitors came with concrete enquiries and business deals were also concluded.” Dr. Guido Corbella, Managing Director of Centrexpo, also confirms the extremely positive exhibitor feedback: “Exhibitors express an above-average level of satisfaction. This year, Italian companies showed a lot of machines. I am happy that the Russian market recognises this commitment. UPAKOVKA/

The majority of our companies believe that the Russian market is very promising and use UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA as a platform to establish and expand their business relations. Russia is among the TOP 10 packaging markets, and exhibitors confirm a high demand. In the coming years, the focus will be increasingly on the converting and packaging printing sectors. I think this is a big development.”
Packaging trends at UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA In the context of UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA 2013, the SAVE FOOD Initiative of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and Messe Düsseldorf GmbH also received a lot of attention. Lectures on this topic were held in the FUTURE FORUM, an event launched in 2013. In a lecture entitled “Modern engineering as a means to fight food losses”, the VDMA Association provided information on the background of this issue in Russia and the solutions proposed by the processing and packaging industry. Furthermore, the SAVE FOOD Exhibition had its premiere in Russia. It visualised international food losses and thus further increased the visitors’ awareness for this important issue. The next UPAKOVKA/UPAK ITALIA will be held from 28 January to 31 January 2014 in Moscow - again in parallel with interplastica. The upcoming specialist trade fair will again define primary topics in the processing, converting and packaging printing fields. The new regulations introduced in Russia for product labelling and marking lead to an increased interest in these matters.

he expected 37,000 visitors with money to invest (2012: 36,986) at FachPack in Nürnberg will be spoilt for choice from 24–26 September, when they can choose from products and services from around 1,500 companies (2012: 1,466) in the packaging, technology, processing and logistics segments. Once the list of companies to visit is complete, an extremely attractive supporting programme will compete for the favour of the packaging specialists. Fortunately, there are many oases of relaxation at the event that invite visitors to linger and refresh their mind and body.
industry and the packaging sector discuss how to make optimum use of the value creation contributed by the most important transport packaging. The AIPIA Congress (Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association based in the Netherlands) takes place for the first time during FachPack in Nürnberg. In the many English-language presentations in NCC Ost on 24 September, everything is geared to “active and intelligent packages as new marketing tools”. Thursday, 26 September, is Careers Day with a variety of events especially for students, pro-
spective packaging specialists and career changers from other sectors, e.g. from mechanical engineering or economics.
An arena of solid board – who could come up with such an idea? It was originally a kind of battleground. Spectacular animal fighting, chariot races, contests or theatre performances filled the arenas in the Ancient World. The visit to an amphitheatre promised unusual experiences, thrills included. An impressive, approx. sixfoot high oval of solid board in the exhibition hall? Who could come up with such an idea? The Verband Vollpappe-Kartonagen (VVK – Solid Board Packaging Association) together with smart students from the Institute for Industrial Design (IFID) at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. Forums and congress: knowledge transfer with a welcome difference One such example is the PackBox Forum in hall 4. Three different theme slots on each of the three days of the exhibition provide new and in-depth knowledge on all exhibition topics. Interested visitors can enjoy listening over a coffee and snack or actively contribute to the discussions. This time the Corrugated Cardboard Forum in the St. Petersburg room of NCC Ost on 25 September examines the subject of “Corrugated Cardboard – Success Factor in the Supply Chain”. certainly guarantees experiences of a special kind. Where can the convincing properties of solid board be experienced better than in this 300-m² world of experience? Solid board is a versatile, efficient and environmentally compatible packaging material that is suitable for a broad spectrum of packaging for many different fields of application – like robust storage and transport packaging, logistics-based and eyecatching shipping and shelf-ready packaging, crates, baskets, and boxes for fruit and vegetables, meat and sausages, fish and other foods, according to VVK. The association and students promote “their” packaging material with solid board applications of a different kind: including a gramophone, a radio and a parachute of solid board – all definitely in a working state, of course! Industrial design students are also on the stand together with experienced packaging experts and happy to explain their original inventions. design, high-quality material and attractive appearance are particularly demanding. Packages in the pharmaceutical environment achieve far more than product protection. They help to ensure the correct dosage and application, prevent product piracy, are childproof and suitable for the elderly. These are the conflicting requirements covered by the special show in hall 9. The German Packaging Award is an unbelievable 50 years old! Prizewinning packaging solutions can be admired in hall 6. The German Packaging Museum invites FachPack visitors to a journey back in time through the history of international packaging. The exciting show in hall 6 uses exhibits from everyday life and cultural and art history to put the limelight on packaging as a reflection of cultural and social development.
About FachPack
tons of solid board packaging worth approx. 550 million euros are manufactured in Germany every year. Some 80 per cent of solid board packaging is used in the food industry. The solid board at the special show cleverly highlights its core advantages like stability and efficiency, individuality through its varied construction, design and print possibilities, and cost-effectiveness through its high strength and low material volume. For example, a splashing waterfall in the experience world at FachPack demonstrates the impressive wet strength of this packaging material. Here bayern design focuses on the importance of design for the packaging industry and its users with the aid of selected exhibits to present the professional design of shelf-ready packaging, transport packaging and displays. Creativity and experimental approaches in the search for functional packaging are demonstrated live by students in hall 7A. With around 1,500 exhibitors and 37,000 visitors, FachPack is one of the most noted packaging exhibitions in Europe. The event in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 24–26 September 2013 presents a comprehensive range of products and services in the segments of packaging materials and supplies, packaging ancillaries, packaging machinery, labelling and marking equipment, peripheral packaging machinery and equipment, packaging printing and processing, packaging logistics, and packaging and logistic services. The visitors from Germany and the neighbouring countries come mainly from industries like food/beverages, pharmaceuticals/cosmetics, chemicals, printing/paper/cardboard, packaging- and logistics-related services, plastics, and automotive engineering and components. FachPack impresses again in 2013 with its creative working atmosphere, in which information and cultivation of contacts are just as important as answering specific technical questions.

IFFA 2013: THE EXHIBITION NO. 1 FOR THE MEAT INDUSTRY World market leaders with top innovations A complete range of machines and equipment for meat processing industries
A
round 950 exhibitors from 47 countries presented their innovations at IFFA – The No. 1 for the meat industry, held in Frankfurt am Main in May 2013. With new products covering the entire process chain, they occupied 110,000 square metres of exhibition space, an increase of six percent compared to the previous event. With these figures, IFFA was once again set to underscore its leading position for the whole international sector. Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Messe Frankfurt: “We are experiencing a strong response to IFFA as the unrivalled leading trade fair for the meat industry. All market leaders have signed up to present their innovations to an international audience of trade visitors. With a new, optimised hall concept and more exhibition space, this year’s IFFA will have a new look – more modern, more compact and bigger. Together with our
IFFA FP.indd 3
partners, we have created the best possible conditions for a successful IFFA.” After three years of uninterrupted growth, Germany’s manufacturers of machinery and equipment for the meat industry continue to be optimistic during the run-up to IFFA. Berthold Gassmann, Chairman of the VDMA Meat Processing Machines Division, says, “We estimate that meatprocessing machines worth around € 850 million were made in Germany in 2012. This represents an increase of about four percent. Accordingly, we are looking forward to the coming IFFA fair with great optimism. More than ever before, the on-going process of globalisation and changing markets demand a strong, internationally recognised platform that not only offers the global meat industry a complete overview but also reveals the latest trends and shows solutions. And only IFFA can offer all that.” New hall concept IFFA 2013 were distinguished by a new, optimised hall concept.
For the first time, the fair occupied both levels (11.0 and 11.1) of the new Hall 11. There, key international players from the packaging, supply facilities, measuring and weighing technology presented their innovations. Additionally, exhibitors from the processing and cutting segment were located in Hall 11.1. As in the past, companies from the slaughtering, dismembering and processing segment were positioned in Halls 9.0 and 9.1. The focus in Hall 8.0 was on processing. Thanks to this new structure, visitors will find the complete range of machines and equipment concentrated in the western part of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre. Also new is the use of two floors in Hall 4. Thus, the range of products and services for ‘Selling – Everything for the butcher’s shop’ and suppliers of packaging are now to be found in Hall 4.1 while exhibitors with ingredients, spices, additives and casings were

on the floor below, in Hall 4.0. Wolfgang Marzin: “For our visitors, the new hall concept means shorter walking distances and an improved overview. Moreover, the impressive ‘Portalhaus’ building forms a new main entrance in thewest of the Exhibition Centre. And, last but not least, the new hall concept means we have been able to comply with the long-standing wishes of many exhibitors for more exhibition space.” High level of internationality on both exhibitor and visitor sides. The high degree of internationality on both the exhibitor and visitor sides reflected the international importance of IFFA. At the previous event, 55 percent of exhibitors came from abroad. After Germany, the top 10 exhibitor nations included Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, USA, France, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland and Poland. The proportion of German exhibitors has remained stable at around 45 percent over recent years (2010: 421 companies). The broad spectrum of products and services at IFFA attracted trade visitors from the industry, trade and butchers’ business. In 2010, 59 percent of the approx. 58,000 visitors came from outside Germany. The best represented visitor nations were the Russian Federation, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, the USA and Australia. A total of 24,180 visitors came from Germany. An important group of visitors comprises decision makers from the butchers’ trade. Heinz-Werner Süss, President of the German Butchers’ Association (Deutscher FleischerVerband – DFV): “IFFA is the foremost address for the butchers’ trade. With many interesting events, important competitions and the numerous innovations in the technical side, IFFA 2013 confirmed its position as the world’s leading trade fair for the entire meat processing sector. All butchers had taken this opportunity to visit IFFA and receive important impulses

for their own future.” IFFA focuses on the trends in the meat-processing sector Safety, hygiene, traceability, automation and sustainability are important subjects for the meat-processing and supplier industries. In particular, ever greater significance is accruing to the question of sustainability. Many ideas and solutions for the efficient use of energy and resources have already been implemented in many parts of the meat-processing and packaging technology sector, and IFFA offered an upto-the-minute overview of them. The machines and equipment were seen in Halls 8, 9 and 11 cover the entire spectrum – from slaughtering, via processing, to packaging. Suppliers of ingredients, spices, additives, casings and packing materials were important partners for butchers and industrial meat-processing companies. Besides product safety, a good feeling for consumer trends is vital in this field. One of the main subjects in the sector is clean labelling, i.e., the reduction or exchange of declarable additives, allergens and artificial aromas. Additionally, the trend to ‘Walking Food’ describes the lifestyle and eating habits of younger target groups, for which the spice industry offers suitable concepts – not just for characteristic spicy sauces but also for appealing take-away packaging.
The range of exhibits seen in Hall 4.1 offered an overview of the latest products and trends for the butcher’s shop with innovations from the fields of measuring and weighing technology and packaging, not to mention new solutions for purchasing foodstuffs, furnishings and protective clothing, as well as quality, service, catering and party-service concepts. Important subjects for butchers include regionalism, energy efficiency, hygiene, convenience and awayfrom-home sales. Regionalism has developed into a major trend with numerous consumers rediscovering their region in this age of increasing globalism, and giving preference to regional products and economic activity. An attractive complementary programme rounds off every visit to IFFA. New in 2013 was the international Meat Vision Congress with Gala Evening and Awards Ceremony organised by the Deutscher Fachverlag publishing company. As in previous years, the international quality competitions of the German Butchers’ Association (DFV) were surely magnets for visitors while the ‘Trend Butcher’s Shop’ were focused on the latest point-of-sale trends. Additionally, there were a continuous series of lectures and practical demonstrations given by a variety of companies and experts in the Forum area.
