Women’s Lacrosse vs. Stevens Institute of Technology

The women’s lacrosse team will have a serious score to settle with Stevens Institute of Technology when they face the Ducks in a showdown March 31 at Higgins Stadium. Stevens has beaten the Bombers in two consecutive Empire 8 Tournament finals. In 2010, the Ducks defeated the Blue and Gold by a score of 14-10 to claim their first Empire 8 Conference championship. Stevens pounced on the Bombers to begin the game with three goals in the first two minutes of the game. The South Hill squad was able to claw its way back and get within a goal of the Ducks in the second half. However, Stevens refused to relinquish its slim lead and eventually pulled away by scoring the final three goals of the contest. Last May, Stevens once again put the Bombers in an early hole and led 6-2 after the first 20 minutes. The Blue and Gold fought back into contention and forced three different ties in the second half only to come up short for a second straight year. The Ducks scored the go-ahead goal with six minutes remaining and held on the rest of the way to claim a razor-thin 10-9 victory against the South Hill squad, earning its second consecutive conference title. Stevens will miss its two leading goal scorers from last season, Christine Smith ’11 and Pamela Loria ’11, who scored three of the teams’ goals in the tournament final last season. However, senior attack Michelle Buonacuore returns after leading the Ducks in points and assists in 2011. Junior defender Ashley Carey will also be on the back line after winning the tournament’s most valuable player award last year. Each of these two teams figure to be the class of the Empire 8 this season and should boast strong nonconference records when the Bombers host the Ducks to begin its conference slate. The Blue and Gold will almost certainly have revenge on their mind for this game.

Baseball vs. St. John Fisher College If the baseball team wants to begin a new reign as king of the Empire 8 Conference, it’s clear the biggest obstacles standing in the way are the St. John Fisher College Cardinals. The Bombers enjoyed a sustained period of dominance to begin the new millennium, rolling off nine straight conference titles from 2001 to 2009. However, the Cardinals have wrestled the torch away by claiming the last two Empire 8 Championships. Last season, Fisher won three of four contests on the Bombers’ homefield, wins that proved to be the difference in the conference race. In the first doubleheader between the two teams, Fisher employed a pair of sixth-inning rallies to sweep the Blue and Gold by scores of 4-1 and 5-4. Two weeks later, the Bombers piled up seven runs in the first three innings to finally beat the Cardinals 9-6. In the nightcap, Fisher struck back by allowing just one base runner in the first six innings to earn a dominant 5-0 victory and claim the season series. The road to the Empire 8 title goes through Fisher, and it’s up to the Bombers to vanquish the Cardinals when the two teams begin a three-game series April 21 at Freeman Field.

The men’s lacrosse team will be eager to make a statement for its program and conference when it faces off at RIT in a matchup March 11. The Tigers claimed the last two Empire 8 Conference championships but left the conference to join the Liberty League this season. The Bombers jumped out to a 3-1 first-quarter lead on RIT when the two teams played in Rochester, N.Y., last season. However, the Tigers, who were ranked fourth in the nation at the time, roared back with three goals in a span of 24 seconds to take a 4-3 lead. It was a back-and-forth affair for the remainder of the contest until RIT scored three of the final four goals to earn a hard-fought 10-8 victory. With the Tigers out of the picture, the race for the Empire 8 title should be wide open in 2012. The Bombers could send a big statement with a win over their former conference rivals and remind RIT that the level of competition in the Empire 8 remains high without them. Softball vs. Cornell University

The I th a c a n 3

The softball team dropped two close contests against cross-town Division I rival Cornell University last season, but the Bombers’ talented roster could change the script for this year’s doubleheader April 25 at Kostrinsky Field. The Blue and Gold experienced a storybook season in 2011 during which they compiled a 30—14 overall record and a memorable run to the NCAA regional final. However, the South Hill squad was swept by Cornell in a late-season doubleheader at home last April. The Bombers outhit the Big Red 7-6 in the first game and pitcher Britt Lillie ’11 allowed only three earned runs in six innings. However, Cornell scored two unearned runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball en route to a 5-2 victory. In the afternoon follow-up, the Blue and Gold held a 2-1 lead all the way until the bottom of the seventh inning when Cornell tied the game on a Bombers throwing error, sending the game into extra innings. After the South Hill squad grabbed the lead with a manufactured run in the top of the eighth frame, the Big Red tied the score again on a wild pitch and then walked off in dramatic fashion on a three-run homer by sophomore infielder Jenny Edwards for a 6-3 victory. With a young core that is returning intact for another season, the Bombers should be even stronger when the two teams meet again in 2012. The Blue and Gold should have plenty of momentum by that point in the season and will be hungry to pay Cornell back with a pair of victories against the Big Red this April.

Women’s Crew vs. University of Rochester

5

A look at the games you won’t want to miss this spring.

The battles between the women’s crew and the University of Rochester have become an annual April tradition on the waters of Cayuga Lake. Because both squads are always nationally ranked, this matchup has yet to disappoint. When the two crews met last year, the Bombers were ranked second in the nation and the YellowJackets were ranked 26th. The Blue and Gold were able to sweep both the first and second varsity 8 competitions by a margin of at least 20 seconds in each race. The South Hill squad will miss the presence of graduated seniors Jine Andreozzi ’11 and Amy Gefell ’11 on its varsity boat. However, senior captains Lindsey Hadlock and Elisabeth Hurley will be looking to fill that leadership void and return the Blue and Gold to national championship contention. The surroundings will be a little different for this year’s matchup. The Bombers are still waiting for the construction of their new boathouse to be completed, and so the two squads will be operating out of temporary locations. However, the stakes will be as high as ever with both crews reloading for national title runs. The South Hill squad has defeated Rochester in 10 consecutive seasons, and so the YellowJackets should not be lacking any motivation when they travel to the Cayuga Inlet on April 7.

Plan of Lacrosse teams power By christian araos staff writer

A vacancy in the goal may make or break the men’s lacrosse team’s chances of winning its first Empire 8 Conference title since 2008. Three players will compete to replace two-time Empire 8 Goalie of the Year David Gal ’11 in the cage. Senior Brendan Green recovered from a torn ACL in his left knee to assert himself as Gal’s backup last season and is the projected starter for the Bombers’ first game against the Lycoming College Warriors on March 7 at Higgins Stadium. Green said he has received encouragement from his teammates, but he is still aware that he has to earn the position in the lineup. “It’s great hearing that from your teammates, but I’m not going to settle in and think I have the starting job,” Green said. Green has played seven games in the past two seasons, making 21 saves and scooping up 11 ground balls. Senior midfielder Chris Duncan said Green’s experience as a backup has helped him comprehend the relationship between the goalie and the rest of the Bombers’ defensive unit. “He’s a true player,” he said. “He understands the defenses, he’s a hard worker and he’s going to surprise a lot of people this year.” Freshmen Joseph Fletcher and Mac Davis are looking to beat out Green for the starting job, and Head Coach Jeff Long said he has given all three goalies equal time in the net throughout the preseason. “The job is still up for grabs right now,” Long said. “We have a great competition going on, but right now I would have to give the job to Brendan being the senior, but we’ll probably rotate early on.” While he may not get the starting job, Fletcher is confident that the competition for it will improve all the players’ skills. “It’s a good atmosphere to play in,” Fletcher said. “You know that at any given time the goalie playing is going be a solid one. It’s making me better and benefitting the whole team.” Senior Will Kraus, junior Adam Wacenske and junior Marc Roberts return to implement a new style of defense that relies on extended man-to-man pressure and the ability to force turnovers. The team also hopes it can stay out

of the penalty box — it averaged fewer than four penalties per game last season. The pressure system aims to challenge the Bombers’ fitness and ability to rotate players from the defensive end and at midfield. Duncan said he is looking forward to playing within the new formation. “As a defender, this is the defense you want to play,” he said. “We have the players to run it. We have five guys who can play at close defense, and three can play long stick midfielder, so we have the players to run it.” The intense defense will be combined with a transition offense aimed at scoring at a quicker pace. Scoring opportunities will depend on the defense forcing turnovers, the goalie providing a good outlet pass and an ability to execute. Senior Jay Lucas will balance time between attack and midfield while senior Brian DiBetta will handle faceoffs to try and compensate for midfielder Mike Silipo ’11, who graduated after last season. Silipo tied the team-high with 38 ground balls and scored a third-best of 22 goals last season. The Bombers will rely on senior attack Tom Mongelli to improve on the worst short-handed shooting percentage in the conference last season. Mongelli, who led the team in scoring last season with 36 goals, said anticipation of the play before it unfolds is necessary to succeed in the new system. “You need to figure out what you need to do before catching the ball,” Mongelli said. “I want to be able to know what defender is coming at me, how fast is he coming at me, whether I should pass or shoot, and if I shoot, where should I shoot.” The Bombers’ experience and Rochester Institute of Technology’s decision to leave the Empire 8 Conference for the Liberty League has led to preseason projections of second-place finishes in both the Empire 8 Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Magazine Poll. Green said the team still feels a need to prove itself within and outside of the conference. “We just have to prove ourselves against teams like St. John Fisher and Nazareth and then people will give us more respect,” he said. “With the seniors leaving, the media loses a lot of respect for us, but we always come back strong.”

Senior midfielder Brian DiBetta won 130 of 242 faceoffs last season and 58 percent of his shots were on goal. DiBetta is one of nine seniors on the squad this season.

ATTACK toward offensive revivals By nate bickell staff writer

Equipped with a first-year coach instilling a new offensive mindset, the women’s lacrosse team is determined to take the Empire 8 Conference crown they have fallen one victory short of for the past two seasons. The Bombers’ 2010 and 2011 seasons ended with losses to conference foe Stevens Institute of Technology, including a 10-9 defeat last year. Junior goalie Jessica Worthman, who started all 18 games and made 142 saves last season, said the two close losses to Stevens have motivated this year’s squad to work hard in the preseason. “The games are pretty intense,” she said. “We had to go there twice last year. It sucks to lose by one twice.” The Bombers’ 11—7 overall record last season was good enough for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, but they fell to Middlebury College in the first round by a score of 14-7 on May 11. Shannon McHale will take over as head coach this season after 10 seasons as head coach of Empire 8 Conference rival, the St. John Fisher College Cardinals. McHale replaces Karen Hollands, who has remained a defensive assistant coach for the Blue and Gold. McHale, who attended graduate school at Ithaca College, said the team has impressed her with its work ethic. “The one thing I like about this team is these guys come to play every day,” she said. “They are ready to go and are pretty motivated about where they want to be this year.” The Bombers return their top two scorers from last year’s NCAA Tournament squad in senior attack Nicole Borisenok, who led the team with 53 goals and added 13 assists, and junior attack Tracy Rivas, who scored 44 goals and registered a team high of 14 assists. With the return of Borisenok and Rivas, McHale has implemented a new offense this year that is focused on improvisation and creativity rather than set plays. Borisenok said the offense will require the attackers to stay in the play after they shoot. “After we shoot we have to be ready to mark up and play defense, and that’s something that Coach McHale this year really emphasizes,” Borisenok said. “Now, in order to lay attack you really need to know how to play defense.”

McHale said the Bombers’ new offense should be harder for opponents to prepare for because it is less predictable. “It’s a motion offense, so players aren’t put in certain spots,” she said. “I don’t want people behind the crease the whole time or just driving from the top the whole time because that’s easy to scout.” The Bombers are less experienced defensively than last season, graduating their three defensive starters: Melanie Braun ’11, Elizabeth Marino ’11 and Abby Peterson ’11. Worthman will anchor a back line in goal consisting entirely of underclassmen. Sophomore defenders Katie Long and Jenna Marchinetti played in 18 and 10 games respectively last season and will step into starting roles this season. Worthman said a lack of game experience has not affected the new defensive unit. “With an inexperienced defense it takes longer to get into the swing of things,” she said. “But they’re right where they need to be at this point of preseason.” The Bombers are ranked 21st out of 40 teams in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Preseason Poll and will face a tough schedule right out of the gate. The Bombers will face the Franklin and Marshall College Diplomats and the third-ranked SUNY-Cortland Red Dragons before opening Empire 8 play against the Stevens Ducks on March 31. Worthman said this year’s seniors have made it clear that each player has a voice on the team regardless of seniority. “The seniors we have this year let every other class speak, and everyone has an equal say and feels comfortable with one another,” she said. “We’re like a family on the field.” The Bombers will open their season against the University of Rochester on March 7 before traveling to Clermont, Fla., for spring break, where they will take on SUNY-Geneseo and Franklin and Marshall College. Borisenok said the team’s dedication has kept her motivated during preseason training. “There are some days that I’m looking outside and the weather is terrible, and it’s freezing,” she said. “But I see 23 of my other teammates out there working hard and really pushing themselves, so I know that it’s my responsibility to carry my slack and not let them down.”

Senior attack Nicole Borisenok led the team in goals last season, scoring 53. She scored three goals or more in 11 different games for the Blue and Gold in 2011.

Springing into action Softball After finishing 2011 with a regular season record of 31—14, the softball team was eliminated in the NCAA Regionals on Kostrinsky Field, missing the Division III finals for the third time in seven seasons. Deb Pallozzi will lead the Bombers in her 24th season as head coach alongside the two captains, senior catcher Erin Jacobi and junior infielder Molly O’Donnell.

Men’s Track and Field The men’s track and field team will be carrying its momentum from a successful winter season outdoors with Head Coach Jim Nichols, senior captain Travis Johnson and senior captain Doug Koury leading the way. Koury, who was not a member of the team last spring, earned All-New York State Collegiate Track Conference honors in the high jump, decathlon, 400-meter dash and 1,600-meter relay as a sophomore. With the fall season limited because of the hydrilla infestation, the men’s crew hopes to win the New York State Championships in Whitney Point, N.Y., and earn a medal at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in Worcester, Mass., by the end of May. The Bombers will host indoor practices until spring break when they will leave campus to train in Marietta, Ga. The key to this year’s squad will be the underclassmen. There are only

younger players to make significant contributions. The Blue and Gold hope to win the Empire 8 Conference title, which they held for nine consecutive seasons from 2001 to 2009. They will play their first game against SUNY-Old Westbury tomorrow in Yaphank, N.Y., then travel to California for an eight-game road trip during spring break. Becky Robinson returns for her 17th season as head coach ready to lead the South Hill squad to another national title. The Bombers have graduated several key seniors from last season, including all-Americans Lauren LaPointe ’11 and Amy Gefell ’11 as well as former captain Jine Andreozzi ’11. The Blue and Gold will not have a boathouse on Cayuga Inlet this season, as their new rowing center is under construction and set to open in the fall. The crew will still be hosting its home regattas on the Inlet, but they’ll be housed in a temporary outdoor location. The Bombers will enter the season having lost their two-time All-Americans, Max Orenstein ’11 and Chris Mastrosimone ’11. Orenstein was the squad’s top sprinter, finishing in fifth place in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the NCAA Championships in Delaware, Ohio. Mastrosimone had also registered fifth-place finishes in the 400-meter dash during each of the last two seasons. Following one of the best seasons in program history, the women’s track and field team plans to use its strong foundation to excel this spring. The outdoor team is coming off of a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships after winning the conference, state and regional championships. Head Coach Jennifer Potter, 14-time Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year, begins her ninth season. With 13 seniors on the team, the Bombers have elected to have a senior counsel rather than captains. The squad lost eight seniors after graduation last year, including state and conference champion distance runner Kate Leugers ’11 and sprinter Marcia McCord ’11. McCord was an all-American who set

The men’s tennis team fell to Empire 8 Conference foe Stevens Institute of Technology in the conference finals last season after finishing with a record of 10—8. Seniors Dan Levine and Jimmy Newton return as the Bombers’ captains along with Head Coach Bill Austin. Josh Rifkin ’11, who won more than 50 matches in both singles and doubles play, has graduated. The team is hoping sophomore David Andersen can have a breakout year in his second season on the South Hill squad.

The Blue and Gold are looking to revamp their pitching staff after Britt Lillie ’11 and Allison Greaney ’11 graduated. Sophomores Jillian Olmstead and Sam Bender are expected to step into full-time starting roles. The Bombers also return a solid group of fielders around the diamond, including juniors Adrienne Walters and Jen Biondi. Walters hit .291 and boasted a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000. Biondi hit .329 at the plate with 12 doubles and 32 runs batted in. The South Hill squad’s 2012 season begins March 11 with a doubleheader in Claremont, Fla. — Steve Derderian

The baseball team is preparing to improve on last season’s 18—14 overall record as it begins its 33rd season with Head Coach George Valesente at the helm. The returning players include senior pitcher and team captain Tucker Healy, junior pitcher Pat Lemmo, senior second baseman Matt Keller and senior outfielder Teagen Barresi. Barresi will be looking to build on a season in which he finished with a team-high batting average of .425 and started all 32 games. The team will see several changes in the starting rotation, as the team graduated Aaron Sapp ’11, Dan Lynch ’11 and Andrew Wall ’11.
