Project

ANALYSING SMALL CITIES, Thüringen/Germany Purpose Students divided into groups of 15 aimed to work out, in how far the concept of ‘Urban Metabolism’ can help clarify the interrelations and interdependencies between the urban components in the question about more local and decentralised versus global and centralised systems of stocks and flows and their meaning for urban areas.

space syntax analysis : betweenness a measure of centrality in a graph based on shortest paths.

6622 ha : Bad Frankenhausen

Waltershausen : 66063 ha

Methodology In order to understand the urban metabolism in small cities, Two cities in Thüringia, Germany was examined: Bad Frankenhausen, Waltershausen. Spatial analysis including space syntax analyses have been done by Grasshopper/Rhino3d.

space syntax analysis : closeness a measure of centrality in a network.

Project

DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL TOWNS IN ETHIOPIA, Seriti/Ethiopia Ethiopia

SERITI : City of Stones

Purpose Transforming a rural village in central Ethiopia, which lacks basic infrastructure into a small city of 10,000 inhabitants.

Methodology The project is developed using parametric modelling, whereby the urban form depends on the chosen variable (local construction material; stones). Grasshopper & Rhino3d softwares have been used. (NQY QH /GVCDQNKUOU

Project

DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL TOWNS IN ETHIOPIA, Seriti/Ethiopia Project aims to analyse different scenarios of growth of Seriti into a small city of 10,000 inhabitants, using a parametric model. 1- MONOCENTRIC SCENARIO

Research question: What if the extraction was centrally controlled, starting from a central point, and growing progressively and proportionally to the number of buildings to be constructed, in a concentric way, until reaching 10,000 inhabitants? Centre Population The Number of Houses Plot Size Housing Area Agricultural Area Social Infrastructure Area Number of Stones per house Extraction Area Extraction Method Preservation

2- POLYCENTRIC SCENARIO

Centre Population The Number of Houses Plot Size Housing Area Agricultural Area Social Infrastructure Area Number of Stones per house Extraction Area Extraction Method Preservation

polycentric 10,000 6,000 500m2 168 ha 299 ha 7 ha 2400 467 ha By gots central road, gots and current housing, agriculture, church

Research question: What if we added constraints to the first scenario? What if the extraction was controlled by gots, the extraction areas surrounded each gots, and the housing expansion was limited by current agricultural land?

Centre Population The Number of Houses Plot Size Housing Area Agricultural Area Social Infrastructure Area Number of Stones per house Extraction Area Extraction Method Preservation

3- SELF SUFFICIENT PLOTS

linear 27,165 3,259 1800m2 979 ha 22 ha 2400 ha 979 ha By individuals Inside each plot central road, gots and current housing, agriculture, church

Research question: What if the extraction was controlled by individuals? What if the size of their plots was determined by the number of stones needed to build the buildings for their household? What if their plots gave them self-sufficiency in construction?

Workshop

3 VILLAGES 3 SQUARES, Istanbul/Turkey Purpose The workshop aimed to design public squares for 3 different neighbourhoods in outskirts of Istanbul with a collaboration workshop between 3 different universities with different perspectives. Methodology 5 students from both architecture and planning diciplines worked together in research and design processes. Field research have been done including interviews with local people. FACES OF REMEMBRANCE, Weimar/Germany

Workshop The workshop was based on genuine examples of a culture of remembrance – public places, buildings and monuments in Weimar with all of their social and cultural attributes.

Hotel Elephant

The oldest hotel serving since 17th century in Weimar that hosted many people such as Goethe and Adolf Hitler

Built as a barn for the palace in 15th century. In 1936, police forces of Nazi Regime started to use the building

Marstall

GauForum

The GauForum Weimar was planned as the biggest square of Weimar in the Nazi Regime in Germany

The monument built in the concentration camp after the war in 1958

Buchenwald Memorial

The workshop mainly focused on these two questions; -How is history portrayed in everyday life? -In what ways do we remember important events in our past and how should we cultivate such memories?

In this context, we worked on negative heritage as the concept and focused on the ways of handling the negative heritage. A manifest is written on 4 different monuments in Weimar as an outcome of the workshop. 8
