Dear Friends, On behalf of the team at IT NEXT and 9.9 Mediaworx, it gives me great pleasure to bring you the 2013 edition of the book that highlights the future CIOs of India—the NEXT100. As in the past years, the fourth edition of the book is an outcome of a sixmonth long process that was announced in mid-June 2013. The principal objective of the NEXT 100 program is help aspiring CIOs and senior IT managers become professionally successful. The awards program aims to bring to the forefront experienced IT managers who have the skills, talent and spirit to become CIOs. The intensive three-stage selection process commences with self nomination for awards by applicants; administration of psychometric tests that diagnose personality traits and leadership styles; personal interviews and reference checks. As in the past years, the jury members decided selection criteria, and interviewed all short listed candidates. The final list of award winners was generated through a proprietary scoring model that employs calibrated weights to various factors. This book introduces the people who made it to the final list. It celebrates their entry into the club of India’s future CIOs—and into the fraternity of technology leaders. We look forward to hearing about their continued success in the years to come. While a select few have made it to the NEXT 100 list this year, I would like thank the entire IT manager community for the unstinted support, encouragement and active participation in all NEXT 100 related activities. METHODOLOGY The selection of the fourth cohort of NEXT100 award winners commenced in late in June 2013. The entire IT manager community was invited to apply, through a series of e-mails and print advertisements. By the closing date, more than 1,700 aspirants had registered for the rigorous process. As in the past year, the selection of the award winners was a three-stage process. In the first stage, all aspirants were required to complete a detailed application form—and provide personal and professional information, including education, technical skills and work experience. The second stage was the testing stage, where all award aspirants took psychometric tests that evaluated their personality profiles and leadership styles. Both tests were administered by Paris-based Central Test, and the test reports identify the work attributes, leadership and managerial style of the applicants. All applicants who completed the two tests received a free copy of the detailed assessment report. Using a set of criteria defined by the NEXT100 jury, a short list of candidates was identified for interview. Every shortlisted candidate was independently interviewed by two jury members. Separately, independent recommendations were solicited from each candidate’s designated referees. The scores and evaluations assigned to all candidates in every stage of the selection process were input into a proprietary scoring model that assigns carefully calibrated weights to various factors. The final list of award winners was created as an outcome of this scoring model. To ensure that the NEXT 100 awards are completely fair and unbiased, no member of the editorial team is involved in the selection or elimination of the award winners, nor are editors and staff of IT Next magazine a part of the jury panel. As in past years, the NEXT100 awards program draws on the knowledge and support of the CIO and CFO communities. Fifty-one senior executives, who collectively represent many hundreds of years experience in IT and management, were involved as advisors and selectors this year. The jury panel debated, deliberated and decided on the award winner selection process—and conducted detailed interviews of all shortlisted applicants.

PERSONALITY TEST & MANAGERIAL STYLE INVENTORY TEST In the stage 2 of the NEXT100 application process, all aspirants were administered two tests—a personality test and a managerial style test. Both tests are administered by Paris-based Central Test. The Central Test Personality Inventory for Professionals (CTPI-R) test provides an assessment of work related personality traits that play a crucial role in performance. According to the test designers, CTPI-R conforms to the standards of scientific validation set out by the International Test Commission, and the American Psychological Association. The workplace competencies are conceptualized as “clusters of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are predictive of superior performance in a given job”. According to Central Test, the competency scores in the CTPI-R are not a ‘direct assessment’ of competencies but an ‘assessment of proximity’ of the test taker to the profile of others who have demonstrated a high level of that particular competency. The assumption behind this method is that people with similar profiles will be more likely to exhibit
similar abilities. The scores on each competency also give an indication of the extent to which the person is trainable on each competency. As the score are derived from an assessment of proximity to an ideal profile, they give an indication of the extent to which the candidate is psychologically inclined towards high performance on a specific competency. The second test, the Management Style Inventory Test, assesses a candidate’s aptitude for leadership and identifies their managerial style. Based on seven primary management dimensions (Innovation, Global Vision, Conceptual, Reflective, Affiliation, Intervention and People-Oriented), the test compares the candidate’s profile to typical management roles, including those of Chief Executive, Motivator, Project Manager, Entrepreneur, Expert, Strategist and Executive Manager.
PERSONALITY PROFILE
WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES The CTPI-R test has been standardized on an international group of 5000+ working and managerial professionals. The test uses a continuous scale of 0 to 100% to deduce 21 competencies that are relevant in the workplace. The conclusions are based on statistical studies and theoretical models. This year’s NEXT100 award winners exhibited high scores on competencies like Challenge Orientation, Reliability , Mentoring Others and Authenticity, and scored relatively lower on Caution, Supervision and Influencing.
A collective analysis of the personality characteristics of the NEXT100 award winners indicates that they scored high on attributes like Assertiveness, Tactical, Rational, Emotional Stability and Vision, while scoring relatively lower on Trust, Adaptability, Developing Others, and Action Orientation.

MANAGEMENT PROFILES
The Management Style Inventory test assesses a candidate’s aptitude for leadership measured on seven management-related dimensions. Attributes like Innovation, Global Vision, Conceptual and Reflective Thinking, Affiliation, Intervention and PeopleOrientation are measured on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 indicating a low level and 10 indicating a high level.
The Management Style test also provides an indication of how a candidate’s profile conforms to a variety of seven management roles, including that of Chief Executive, Strategist, Expert, Project Manager, Entrepreneur, Executive Manager and Motivator. The proximity to each role is measured on a scale of 0
to 100%. The management profiles exhibited most frequently by the NEXT100 award winner group are that of Strategist, Project Manager, Executive Manager and Motivator. The profile that was least commonly displayed was of that of Chief Executive.

A happy employee in an organization is likely to be more productive and more creative. When an organization provides an environment that is conducive to freedom of expression, it gives them a sense of ownership and empowerment. This factor alone can be a big difference between an employee and a Happy Employee.
W
ith proper grooming and a culture of open communication, employees will be able to go beyond the regular and that extra mile that makes all the difference in customer satisfaction.
Recent research shows that 70% of buying experiences are based on how the customers feel they are being treated! So it is no surprise that loving customers have a significant impact on whether they choose to do business with you again, thus having a measurable impact on the bottom line. The customer of today is an ‘Infovore’. Before doing business with you, a huge majority of customers will now use the information available on the web to find out a plethora of things about the organisation and the service quality. This highly informed customer
isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact, today’s digital world has made it better than ever for honest, upstanding businesses, who very well take care of their customers to succeed in a world where most companies fall short.
Some of the well-known and most common mistakes, that leaders make today are: 1. Getting business and closing deals is on top of their mind. 2. Spend too much time in monitoring and collecting the data instead of focusing on developing the sales team
3. Driving the number of calls per day each sales person should make instead of quality of calls. 4. No focus on leading by example and creating role models. 5. Being too transactional. “Manager-Employee Relationship” is the key to building a dynamic happy sales organization. The number one reason why employees leave or are not able to perform is because of their managers and should be the key food for thought. Most organizations are customer centric and feel that a happy customer is the key to success. However this is the result of an organization with happy and motivated employees. It is important to understand that a happy and motivated employee is the catalyst in ensuring customer delight. We all know, customer is the most important thing when it comes to business for any company. The
secret to happy, engaged employees is treating them like individuals, nurturing their growth and enabling autonomy to be creative, take initiatives, and generally be free to be great at their work. Any positive working relationship is based on trust. An environment of trust assumes that both parties will be safe, and it carries with it an implicit message that you have each other’s best interests in mind. That is when employees can accept criticism and even anger from a boss they trust. The employees know deep down that the boss really means to help. Without trust in the workplace, communication and teamwork will erode. Additionally, morale will decrease while turnover will rise. However, by creating happy employees you can build employees’ trust in management, thereby making their workplace an environment December 2013 | NEXT100

filled with innovation, creativity, and ultimately higher profits and happy customers. Leaders need to be proactive in creating an environment of trust apparent to all. So how do we build trust amongst employees?
Being Role model An employee always looks up to his or her manager as role model and hence a manager should be a perfect combination of knowledge and leadership qualities. He should be the right combination of being a boss and a friend with his or her subordinates. Set example of success by leading them from front rather than just being an advisor. Is able to strategize and provide solutions to successfully manage various sales and customer situations. Apart for this he should spend quality time with employees with the objective of building and grooming them, it’s not enough just to be present for meetings and other essential tasks and at the same time being honest to them. Remember that honesty is the best policy. When you lie to employees, you erode their trust, and that erosion of trust results in a damaged relationship. Even when telling the truth is difficult, bite the bullet - they may not like what you have to say, but your employees will appreciate you.
Inter Personal Skills People come from different places and backgrounds at the work place without knowing history or back ground of each other. It is important for a leader to understand each employee and their personal environments understanding are really important. It is equally important to develop relationship and rapport with each employee and to achieve this, a leader should be the right

Good interpersonal relations can get things done faster and more effectively .If you want to have good relationship with your employees, you have to be there for the ups and downs. Having a friendly relationship with your workers can be a desirable thing, as relationship of this sort makes the workplace more comfortable one. Being close friends with your employees, on the other hand, could be a poor choice. A proper balance between professional and personal relationship between the employee and manager is the recipe for success.

Have an open door policy. If employees feel comfortable coming to you with new ideas, concerns, or, in the worst-case scenario, complaints, then it’s easier to establish the natural give-and-take that comes with strong relationships. Many organizations fail to retain employees or not able to create a healthy work environment because their managers are difficult to access and are not able to communicate with them openly. This only builds frustration amongst employees and a unhappy employee creates more unhappiness not only
Include employees in important decisions whenever possible. When employees work together to create policy, set organizational goals, choose the tools they need to work and make other decisions integral to the organization, they feel valued and important to the organization and to you. In other words empower your employees, but this may take time as empowerment is based on trust between manager and employees.
Be Fair & Resolve Conflicts As a leader it is important to treat all your employees with equal
fairness. Any bias to a particular employee could be detrimental to the manager’s image of being a role model and building trust. Have a positive attitude towards all employees. Instead of allowing your preferences to be known, treat all employees the same, showing them all that they are equally valuable and appreciated within the workplace. Normally conflicts do arise in the workplace between employees or employee and manager .As a good leader and leader do not let it grow , rather as a true leader and as a concerned manager you should proactively resolve the situation by listening and understanding the issue from both sides .
