Oracle lifts the lid on latest software offerings HALL 5 ORACLE WORLD THE ORACLE WORLD stand is likely to be a popular venue for GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK visitors, with the business software vendor planning no fewer than four product launches during the course of the show. Oracle has the event’s largest booth and intends to use its presence to provide educational experience to customers and partners. A host of Oracle experts will be on hand to engage software enthusiasts in industry seminars and vertical demonstrations.

“This is an excellent opportunity to show our commitment to the region and our market leadership,” says Husam Dajani, Senior Vice-President of Oracle Middle East and Africa. “This year we will launch various cutting-edge products into the region exclusively at GITEX. At the same time, our partners, customers and industry experts will benefit from interactive discussions about the latest industry trends and issues.” One of the most eagerly-awaited products that Oracle is launching at GITEX is its Fusion Middleware 11g, a middleware application infrastructure

family which helps to achieve IT efficiency and enhance investments in enterprise applications. In addition to that, the vendor is aiming to make grid computing even more accessible by introducing the Oracle Database 11g Release 2, while the Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) will be unveiled for the first time ever this week. If that isn’t enough, Oracle Exadata V2 - the HP Oracle Exadata storage server – will also be aired. It has been over 20 years since we established this name. The aims were very simple at that time and the vision was clear and set for a bright future,” Abu-Aisha adds. Sahara Net has also expanded its financial and intellectual capital, the CEO says, with investment from new European partners with a strong background in the telecoms business, and that this will drive the ISP to further growth initiatives. Established in 1989 as a small hobby Bulletin Board Service (BBS) to serve IT professionals in Saudi Arabia, Sahara Net quickly grew to become the leading ISP in the Kingdom. The company today offers services to different sectors, with value-added solutions such as network optimisation, security solutions and managed servers, with a stable price, and stable service. “We do not charge our customers upon market supply and demand; we charge what is required for the service and hardware, to make an honest deal and build a mutual relationship,” says Abu-Aisha. The company says that the Middle East market is very important, as it has been one of the markets least affected by the financial crisis, and has continued to show growth this year. The company has also switched its attention to MEFX to reflect its own focus on financial sector technology.

Tony Achkar, General Manager, Sybase Products Middle East says: “In the initial days Sybase was only a technology vendor, and this is where GITEX was a great platform for us to showcase our latest products. During the last three years, Sybase moved into the solution area such as online banking, data warehousing, and mobile commerce, where targeted events look more beneficial to our organization. This is the main reason why we have shifted to MEFX which is also part of GITEX but more focused towards the financial sector.” The company is also announcing

some of the new solutions devised from its acquisition of Paybox under its mCommerce practice as well as its partnership with Information Builders in the Middle East. MDM in a box from Cognizant BPO AND CONSULTING SPECIALIST Cognizant is showing its new Master Data Management in a box solution at MEFX, to help the region’s financial sector tackle what its says is one of the biggest operational challenges facing the sector today. The company says it has developed MDM-in-a-Box as a rapid deployment solution catering to key requirements for business and IT. MDM-in-a-Box follows a modular, use-case based approach to technology areas that address key concerns and apprehensions. The process of Master Data Management, where an organisation seeks to control and co-ordinate core non-transactional data across multiple silos is a major challenge, with as many as six out of ten MDM programs struggling to get past intial stages. MDM-in-a-Box for Banking allows for consolidation of customer’s data through a BFS-specific data model and hierarchy management to enable KYC, AML, Payments and other services. This allows for a single customer and account view across multiple business unit and application silos to enable enterprise services to customers. The solution is intended to dispell the idea that Master Data Management projects need to be complex and expensive, multi-year initiatives, and to enable swift completion of MDM by offering a fast deployment and according to the company. Cognizant is also using its appearance at MEFX to create create awareness among consumers about its valueadded IT, BPO and consulting services and the key differentiators that it says set it apart from competitors, including strong investment in territories such as Asia Pacific and the Middle East. Computing firm promises cash and carbon cuts HALL 57 STAND A738 “MANY PEOPLE ARE SKEPTICAL that a single PC can be effectively shared by multiple simultaneous users,” claims Frank Coggrave, Vice President for EMEA at NComputing. This, says Coggrave, is why the company is allowing people to try out its X-series and L-series virtual desktops for themselves at GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK. The company states that in today’s economy, the cost of purchasing and supporting individual PCs for each person cannot be justified.

According to NComputing’s Coggrave, virtual desktops save 70% in capital and operating expenses while providing the flexibility to leverage existing equipment and networks. He also points out that on top of saving OPEX and CAPEX, logistically shared and virtualised computing are much more efficient when it comes to repairs and maintenance as only the shared computer needs support and upgrade. If espousing the cost saving benefits of virtual computing and virtual desktops were not enough the company, makes the lofty promise that it will prove

at GITEX that NComputing has the “greenest” credentials in the market. “Last but not least, we will show that NComputing is the greenest computing on earth. There are over a billion personal computers around the world. A typical computer uses over 110 watts of electricity and generates 10kg of e-waste at the end of its short three to five year life,” explains Coggrave. “The overall impact is a massive output of greenhouse gases and hundreds of tons of toxic e-waste. Green computing will not succeed until PCs are more efficiently utilised,” emphasises Coggrave.

The company is also unveiling a new Arabic P-touch label printer model at this year’s event. The manufacturer says that a substantial shift from monochrome to colour printers and multifunction centres (MFCs) is being monitored across the Middle East. Brother bases this assertion on latest reports from the IDC, which suggest that the regional colour laser printer and MFC market is projected to record a 15 per cent growth by year-end. “The massive shift from monochrome to colour printers is largely driven by the decreasing costs of owning and using colour printing equipment, with the advent of technologies, which make printing in colour more accessible to users, whether SMBs, corporate or even home users,” says Shinji Tada, Managing Director, Brother International Corporation Gulf. “Our presence at this year’s GITEX will focus on the new products, which we will be launching to address the growing demand for colour printers and MFCs in the region. ID card printer maker unlocks Bahraini market HALL 2 STAND F10 GERMAN FIRM hw-engineering which works in the ID card industry with a range of ID printers has established a firm presence in the Middle East and Africa region by rolling up the shutters on an office in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Horst Wellhaeuser, the founder and CEO of hw-engineering commented on the move into the region: “I am positive of the potential for business expansion, particularly since the large-scale opportunities in countries in the Middle East has instigated more business, triggering the need for advanced identification solutions, which companies like hw-engineering has long experience in facilitating”.

Horst Wellhaeuser, CEO of hw-engineering targets Middle East region.

Hw- engineering’s Executive Director for the MENA region, Hassan Omran, who has a long experience in the identification solutions market, stated that the company has already established a large base for the ID card printing solutions company in the Kingdom of Bahrain. “I am glad to be part of this fast growing organisation, assuring our existing and new customers and partners in the Middle East and North Africa our continuous support,” says Omran. At GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK hw-engineering is premiering its new hw-8 Smart Retransfer Printer, which is intended to print on all type of ID Cards and designed to serve the mid-range business sectors. The hw-8 Smart Retransfer Printer is a follow up to its hw-1 Sophisticated Retransfer Printer which the firm says is based on JVC/DNP CX330 print engine technology. hw-engineering claims that the hw-8 offers double-sided printing with an “outstanding” print result, from single side to dual sided lamination with various encoding options. “We concentrate more on strategic expansions that enables growth while containing overheads, rather than blindly expanding our business presence abroad and making our consumers bear the brunt by having to pay more for less,” asserts Wellhaeuser. “We are inherently customer-needs focused and that’s what has helped us carve a very distinctive niche in the global market,” he adds.

This increased efficiency is achieved by separating hot and cold airflows from one another. As the basis for implementing individual cold or hot aisle containment, Schroff uses modified elements from its Varistar cabinet range with a frame that has a powder-coated steel plate frame with toughened safety glass to link the opposite cabinet rows and close the aisle from above. Western Digital unveils super storage solutions SHEIKH SAEED HALL NHďšşR49 STORAGE SPECIALIST Western Digital is using GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK to emphasize its strengths and speciality in the storage arena. In line with this aim the ďŹ rm is showing off a number of products that show off ‘the latest in technology, software and design’. Among the products being showcased is Western Digital’s new 1TB Scorpio Blue 2.5-inch SATA hard drive. Staff on hand claim this notebook-aimed drive is the industry’s ďŹ rst 2.5-inch 1TB hard disk. Also on display is another

This drive features network connectivity and targets creative professionals using both PCs and Macs. When asked about the company’s perception of the Middle East market, Didier Trassaert, Senior Director of Western Digital’s EMEA Branded Products says: “The PC market is slowing down right now and there is only a very modest growth forecasted for the remainder of 2009. However, notebook drives are still selling well

with capacity points only increasing. In addition, external drives are in good shape as people have a need for add-on storage and backup of their increasingly growing collection of digital content. We expect that the storage sector, particularly external storage, will continue to do well in comparison to other segments of the market. Trassaert is ultimately optimistic about the Middle East market and sees the trade show as a fantastic opportunity with which his company can directly address ‘one of the fastest growing technology markets in the world’.

Growth aplenty for WD in the region.

Interview Mohammad Omran, Etisalat Etisalat steers course for growth Since 1976, Etisalat has grown from a local communications operator in the United Arab Emirates to an international player leading the way in technological innovation. With record profits and growth over the past few years, Mohammad Omran, Etisalat’s chairman, talks about competition, growth, and innovation and how these factors will support the company’s vision.

W

hat is your vision for the future of the telecom sector in the region now that we are emerging from the crisis? The global economic crisis is touching the bottom of the curve. So now, can we assume that the only way is up? Certainly we must remain cautious, and it is commonly accepted that any recovery will take a significant amount of time and it may suffer multiple setbacks along the way. It is now essential for bold leadership to ensure that operations realise significant returns and maximise the opportunity presented by the current market conditions. Now is the time for acquisitions, particularly in highly-populated and low-penetration markets such as Asia and Africa. Etisalat is constantly studying all investment opportunities available in the telecom sector across the globe. If there is any opportunity, Etisalat investigates and studies its feasibility before taking the decision to take part. We adopt a selective policy in dealing

“Despite the global financial crisis, Etisalat successfully maintained its international rating at the same level as 2008.” with investment opportunities. This is in line with its search for new opportunities in emerging markets and we only compete where the opportunity adds to Etisalat’s success stories in overseas expansion. Each new market for Etisalat reinforces its reputation for quality and reflects well on the various stakeholders, including shareholders, partners and the community in a way that enables the company to add value to the markets it operates in. We will keep evaluating investment opportunities wisely according to the international financial and technical

regulations and standards approved for global investments, in a way that guarantees the rights of shareholders and does not put them at undue risk. Was Etisalat’s rating affected during the financial downturn? Despite the global financial crisis, Etisalat successfully maintained its international ratings at the same level as in 2008 - which are considered among the highest of all globally rated telecommunications companies.

The ratings demonstrate confidence in Etisalat’s profitability, cash flow, financial policies, and portfolio of overseas assets, the value of which has increased significantly. It also reflects its excellent relationship with the UAE government, which is also the company’s majority shareholder. Etisalat’s strong operating performance and prudent financial management during the course of last year will help Etisalat further diversify its funding sources and enhance our

Feature Interview negotiating position when securing future financing deals from debt or capital markets. Please tell us more about your financing strategy and the options you are currently investigating? We are currently working on a program to issue $500 million of bonds to the international market by the end of this year. This could be used to finance Etisalat’s expansion to the next stage, and also to increase the financial options available to us. This does not mean that we are committed to use this option in our international expansion since we have other financial instruments available to us along with sufficient liquidity. What are the areas that will drive your revenue growth in the coming years? Change in the world of telecommunications is a constant factor with new business models, technology, and different technologies converging. We are excited about ongoing developments in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) area, and seek to be amongst the first to embrace such technology to add further value for our customers, who we exist to serve. An area of significant growth potential we foresee for the UAE marketplace is in mobile commerce. There have been some remarkable success stories already in some parts of the world. And we would like to not only replicate those successes, but perhaps exceed established benchmarks. Applications in mobile commerce present an excellent opportunity for us to capitalise, given that Etisalat is already a known as a telecom leader in the region. To do so, we have initiated certain steps, including our tie-up with some banks. Through this we aim to revolutionise banking technology in a pilot program enabling customers to make day-to-day purchases and pay for them through their mobile phones. Further to this, the facilitation of money transfer through mobile phones to India opened up a completely new service and revenue stream for the corporation. We are also continuing to develop our portfolio of non-core services through Etisalat Services Holding LLC. This includes business in diverse areas such as smart card manufacturing, submarine cable maintenance and deployment, training and education, roaming clearing house, facilities management as well as directory enquiry services and land cabling projects. Each of these non-core subsidiaries are being prepared to fuel our growth and international expansion adding several strengths to the Etisalat Group. What is the secret to Etisalat’s success

50

and which factors will be most important in your growth in the years to come? The commercial operations of all entities within the Etisalat group run on stateof-the-art technology, spanning Next Generation Networks, Fiber to the Home, Wi-Fi, GSM, GPRS, CDMA to 3.5G, broadband internet services, with traditional IT and telecommunications moving closer into each other’s domains as technology merges. The service portfolios offered exceed market expectations in many places, and innovations are introduced continuously in new services and products. As Etisalat expands into new ventures and territories, this concept has become

Feature Interview the trademark of an Etisalat entity. It has proven to be yet again a successful path with the customer base growing faster than expected in all territories. Not long ago, a number of partnerships with both BT and France Telecom (amongst others) were formed, in order to share experiences, best practice and set up joint ventures in innovation and enhancements. Combined with the joint marketing campaigns being run – such as the sponsorship of FC Barcelona, this gives a greater return on investment to the Group, but also serves to reconfirm the trust customers have placed in Etisalat as their communication provider, whether as an end-user, business or a major enterprise, wherever they are located.

research relying on our experience, as well as the expertise of our long-term partners. We also aim to introduce customised services that meet the needs of a specific market and its customers In Egypt, for example, which is one of the most competitive markets, we have made great strides in rolling out an infrastructure that now competes not only with the existing mobile voice network; but which is also proving a competitive solution for Internet and broadband services. Egypt’s mobile penetration remains relatively low and we continue to grow our market share and customer base there. We have a number of very positive indications of another success story in

the market there. We currently have more than 10m customers in Egypt, less than three years since launch. What are you the most proud of in your company right now? There are so many areas of our business that are performing at the top of their game right now it is hard to point out any one area over the others. Today, we are positioned amongst the world’s largest telecom operators and the brand has become synonymous with innovation and high technology, quality service, commitment to the community and delivering strong returns to our investors and value added to the market and customers we serve.

Etisalat now has more than ten million customers in Egypt.

What is the status of the deal for Libya and Syria? In July this year we have formally submitted a bid for a fixed and mobile license in Libya. We are awaiting the response from the Libyan authorities, which is expected soon. We are also studying the possibility of competing for the third mobile network license in Syria, due to the importance of the market. This is characterised by the low penetration and higher average revenue per user for communications services. We are waiting new developments which we expect may arise by the end of this year or the beginning of next as announced by the Syrian Minister of Communications and Technology. We will then study the conditions and take the decision to compete for the license or not. Etisalat has grown massively in such a short period of time – how are you managing to supervise your business as it expands? We have altered our strategy to reflect the changing market conditions, gradually shifting from an acquisitive mode to focusing increasingly on operational excellence. In order to manage operations in 17 countries across two continents, we initiated certain steps within the Corporation to create a corporate umbrella, which will work at monitoring and optimising performance and returns, inside and outside the UAE. The key objective will be to optimise the synergies that now exist with a global footprint, and thus ensure that each of these entities reaps the benefits of being part of an extended Etisalat network. Which is the most competitive African market? And what is your strategy for facing competition there? Competition creates a healthy environment for the businesses involved, as well as for the customer. When we enter a new market we offer services and telecommunications solutions based on intensive studies and market

f there is one single theme that has stood out in the IT industry this year, it has been the need for change. With an economic climate more harsh than the dot.com bubble bust, which barely touched the region, 2009 has been characterised by cut backs, reduced budgets and pressure to control costs, across every sector and size of company. With signs of recovery slow to emerge, virtually every organisation has had to look to change processes, procedures and systems in the search for efficiency, whether to make vital savings, or to take competitiveness to new levels. At the centre of this change is the IT sector. Now, often for the first time for many in the region, where IT has sometimes taken a back seat, or has simply been a cost centre, it seems that IT is the answer. Organisations are turning to their IT departments, and their solutions providers, to give them the edge in efficiency, and insight into processes that they are looking for. The way companies handle their data, the control they have over their processes, their links to customers and their ability to use their data to make timely business decisions has come to the fore. The IT manager and CIO now find themselves right at the heart of the solution for guiding the business through difficult times. It’s for this reason that GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK is more important than ever before, and why the ever evolving nature of the show, provides an accurate reflection of the needs of the industry. The Middle East

IT market can no longer afford to simply buy a solution from a big brand without a real understanding of the true value that the solution offers. GITEX presents a golden opportunity to gain greater insight into the benefits of technology, with more companies participating than last year, and with new features such as Vendor Theatres which allow show visitors to gain a deeper insight into the solutions on offer. In addition, although it may have taken a while for the recession to reach the Middle East, that delay

provides an opportunity in allowing the region’s IT professionals to learn from counterparts and experts in other regions who have already tackled the challenges ahead. Through the expanded Global Conference and the other educational opportunities available, CIOs and IT professionals have a perfect window into the strategies and solutions they need to drive growth. And as ever, GITEX provides a great venue to network with partners and peers to find out how they are preparing for the upturn. With so many ideas and opportunities on offer, this year’s GITEX looks set to be one of the most essential for the industry yet.
