A VIBRANT FESTIVAL OFF THE BEATEN PATH

Culturally enlighting, this town outside of Morelia offers its own contribution to the famous Day of the Dead festivities

Mexico is known for its vibrant Day of the Dead festivities, celebrated throughout the country by locals and visitors alike. The beautiful colonial city of Morelia, in the state of Michoacan is no exception. During the first days of November, the city if full of Cempasuchitl and altars with offerings to the deceased set up outside of local homes or public spaces like parks or cemeteries where family members are buried. If you are interested in diving in deeper to this tradition, just outside of Morelia you will find the little town of Capula. Here you can experience their Catrina Doll Festival, highlighting the colourfully painted clay skeletons–an important symbol of Day of the Dead celebrations. The festival takes place between October 22 and November 6 and includes more than 250 artisans showcasing their handicrafts, Catrina dolls of all sizes, as well as local food, music and other cultural activities. This is just one of the many culturally rich festivals offered throughout the year in and around the city of Morelia in the state of Michoacan.
