PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT Words by Jenna Houghton

#YASS QUEEN 10

Josh Clarke has big shoes to fill. Towering stilettos and hefty platforms sewn into fluorescent spandex flares. He’s stepping into a role made iconic by Guy Pearce in the 1994 cult classic film and reiterated time and again for the stage. It’s the 18-year-old’s first lead role, playing Adam/Felicia in the New Plymouth Operatic Society’s Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It’s a bold and sassy show and Adam/Felicia is a bold and sassy drag queen. But Josh isn’t daunted, he’s excited to bring something fresh to the role, and a little of himself.

“But he shows his vulnerability at some points during the show and the audience gets to see that.” It’s a role he almost didn’t audition for, unsure he could pull off the flamboyant femininity or Aussie twang. However, come casting call he decided to give it a go, figuring if he missed out, he could still land a spot in the ensemble. “Stephen Robertson, the director, got up on stage and did the line with me, which is something he never does. I looked him in the eye and pushed him across the stage with my finger on his chest. The only thing that got me the role was my acting. My singing was very, very average but I was confident in the acting.” Josh credits his passion to a handful of mentors and Ms. Phillips’ theatre sports at Devon Intermediate. “We did Stage Rock in front of a full house at the Showplace. I fell in love with the hype and adrenalin and the nervousness. I did the school play the next year, and then everything I could get my hands on.”

the Showplace stage alongside seasoned performers Cameron Douglas and Isaac Pawson, who will reprise the roles of Bernadette and Tick/Mitzi. Josh welcomes the pressure, it’ll push him to be better, and he’s aiming to be great. The dream is Hollywood, following in the footsteps of kiwi KJ Apa, who got his big break in Netflix’s Riverdale and now stars in a slew of Hollywood pictures.

Once you’ve found what you know you’re meant to do and what you love, there’s no point not putting 100 percent into it.

“Adam’s really similar to how I was a few years ago. He makes jokes and tries to lighten situations, he wears a mask to hide himself, because he’s scared that he won’t be accepted,” Josh says.

For now, he’s focused on putting 100 percent into Priscilla, rehearsing over 10 hours a week – practising the accent and perfecting the footwork. There are feathers, sequins, leotards and epic headpieces made of flowers. The costumes, direct from the West End, are at times revealing but Josh says once he’s in character the crazy will feel natural.

The young thespian has already got a few credits to his name including parts in Wheeler’s Luck, Annie Jr., Sister Act, Mary Poppins and the Christmas special Boogie Wonderland. And he’s studied with some leading names in the global theatre scene. Josh auditioned and won a one-on-one session with twotime Tony nominee Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter) at last year’s Christchurch International Musical Theatre Summer School.

He’s also confident the nerves won't kick in until opening night, and when they do, he’ll calm himself down by putting things into perspective.

It’s those experiences that he wants more of; hands on training with the best in the business. He will take to

Audiences are guaranteed to leave the theatre feeling excited and thoroughly entertained.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the audience. We’re telling a story and getting them excited. Films, TV and theatre give audiences a chance to escape reality for two and a half hours and to leave the theatre feeling inspired or having learned something.”

THE GARDEN OF

Eden

and that’s what I try to do. I chose the mental health foundation because it really hits home for me. Living with a mental illness is so hard and it’s even harder for those who don’t have the access to help so raising money for those who need it really means a lot to me and it’s something I'm going to continue to do.

TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOUR GARDEN OF EDEN FOOD?

Garden of Eden Cakes is my own business and I specialise in making Raw/V/RSF/GF cakes and slices that are super good for you but that actually taste good and don’t just taste like cashews and dates haha.

Naki girl, winner of My Kitchen Rules New Zealand 2018 and owner of Garden of Eden Cakes - Eden McPhilips. @gardenofedencakes | www.gardenofedencakes.com

WHAT SPARKED YOUR PASSION FOR FOOD?

I’ve always loved being in the kitchen. Me and my dad would always be in there together baking when I was really young and as I grew up I just always found it so much fun creating new things in the kitchen. I’m also a massive foodie myself so eating good food has always been a priority.

SINCE WINNING MKR WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO?

Well after winning MKR I had a good break off work where I may or may not have blown a good proportion of the money on festivals and alcohol haha. I then went on to be responsible and started my own business and so far so good.

RECENTLY YOU RAISED MONEY FOR THE MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATION - WHY THIS ORGANISATION?

I’ve always thought that people with a social media following should make more of an effort to give back or help out because they have the following to do so 14

WHAT'S THE FUTURE LOOKING LIKE?

Future is looking very bright especially for this business of mine. It’s taken off and I’m only in the first two months so I’m so excited to see where it takes me and potentially get a cookbook out in the next year or two.

MEN IN THEIR CRAFT Words by Katie Pettigrew

Taranaki is a region bursting with talent at every turn, and this time the spotlight has been put on Men who are top in their craft. Get the d-low on some of the top blokes around here - they come from all walks of life, carry big dreams and ideas and will inspire you to discover things right on your doorstep. Check out the following stories behind five powerhouses.

18

DAMIN RADFORD SCOTT ARTIST

If you’ve ever strolled the streets of New Plymouth, chances are you might have seen some of Damin Radford Scott’s art known to most as Milarky. @milarky For the Taranaki artist, drawing is something he’s always done whether it be street art or gallery work. He never found the need to announce he was ‘an artist’ until later on in life. “I was on a plane filling out an arrival card and got to the occupation question. It was then that I realised, yeah, I probably am an artist.” After High School, Damin moved to Wellington, but he didn’t immediately pursue his passion. “I originally studied physics and German. I thought why would I go to uni to study art and painting when I’m going to do it anyway, but I eventually gave in and studied Fine Arts.” Nowadays you’ll find Damin back in New Plymouth, selling his work in galleries and working towards solo exhibitions based on the ideas he has been researching. Damin tries to be factual about the ideas he talks about in his art. A lot of his inspiration comes from things that are happening in the world, environmental issues, the

impacts humans are having and most recently the idea of Nomadism, which saw him travel to the States. “The biggest thing happening right now is what we’re doing to the planet. For the last few years I’ve been working on the concept of Nomadism. I actually went back to uni and did my masters on that subject.” The highlight of what he does has to be the solo shows. “They’re a big deal and a big driver for me. All attention is on your work, I take it quite seriously and often I try to be so ambitious with what I’m doing that I don’t get a chance to think about the nerves.” Without the support of his family Damin says he wouldn’t have the confidence to do what he’s doing. When his family helps out at the shows and it all comes together it’s a really cool feeling for him. Milarky's had 10 solo exhibitions since the age of 17, his first was self-organised in an empty building on Devon St and his most recent was at Kina in 2016. “My most recent show was called Borderlands, I was researching nomadism but realised through my travel just how significant the fact of borders are and how hard it is to cross the land.” Damin doesn’t have a set style for his art, it has hints of comic, is full of his ideas and he prefers it to be black and white. “I create art for people, when I finish it it’s not mine anymore, I find a way to pass on my ideas in a way that can be received, I never expect anyone to arrive at that information but there is a lot I’m saying in there.”

TANE MORGAN

PR%F & STOCK COFFEE AOTEAROA Tane Morgan is not only an outstanding barista, but the proud owner and operator of one of New Plymouth’s neighbourhood gems. Tane moved home to New Plymouth from Wellington where he was studying, after his dad set up Caffe Blues in Westown and his love affair with the art of coffee making began. “I didn’t know a lot about coffee other than I was going to be the barista and I had a heap of really cool mates that were willing to pay for a really crap coffee, so I learnt how to make it reasonably fast by having that opportunity.” Tane was a barista for 10 years and after that taught coffee making at WITT for another five. About a year ago Tane, along with Fiancé Adrianna, decided to add to the epic coffee culture in New Plymouth and created Pr%f & Stock Coffee Aotearoa. They became a coffee dream team and started roasting coffee and selling it wholesale to cafes and restaurants around the region. Next door to the roasting, the pair also set up a takeaway store, both have a wicked convenience about them as they’re run out of their home garage.

20

“People can roll in and roll out, no hassle with parking, one garage is the takeaway store and the other is where we produce and package, from there we send it out around the Maunga. We’ve picked up 15 accounts in the last 12 months and it’s onwards and upwards from here.” Ethically sourced ingredients and a community feel are really important for Tane and that’s reflected in everything they do. “The ideology of our business is to create a community spirit and cohesion between likeminded people, people who are into looking after the planet and creative people who we can showcase alongside what we’re good at.” Tane says hospo is in his blood and crafting something people come back for and enjoy, day in and day out is where his passion comes from. “We have four-year-old twins and showing them that you can do it, out of a garage, at home, make a good living from it, and still having plenty of time to enjoy them is my motivation.” Tane is ambitious and creative and enjoys black coffee and the odd espresso martini! He cares about his job, doing it well and the people that make it happen. If you were wondering the meaning behind the name of the coffee joint- the PROOF is in the pudding and there will always be enough ethical and sustainable STOCK to go round. But don’t just trust everything you read, go in and have a cuppa for yourself – 40 Cutfield Road.

“We started doing all the club events and competitions, that’s how I got into it and I loved it straight away.” Tom won the Board Riders Club under 8 competition at the age of seven – it was his first win and since then he has made huge strides in establishing his name in the surfing world. The year 12 New Plymouth Boys’ High School student had a career highlight earlier this year, when he won his first national title, under 16 Champion, over a week of competing. “We were lucky enough to have the competition held in Taranaki this year, for the first time in 17 years, so it felt really good to win my first ever national title at home, at Stent road, which is my favourite spot to surf.” Tom’s favourite part of surfing is the unexpected, “the variables are so exciting, anything can happen, and I love how everything can change suddenly, it’s always different.” As for reaching his goals, Tom’s already smashing them, having recently been named in the New Zealand surfing team, set to travel overseas at the end of the year. “I’m hoping to have a good result there and get more consistent with everything I’m doing including surfing and fitness in the leadup to then.”

TOM BUTLAND SURFER

Which means a lot of time in the water practising for Tom, the best way he learns. “In the lead up to competitions I surf around three times a day and do a lot of mountain biking which is my other favourite sport, and then in the week leading up I just have a half an hour surf a day to ensure minimal injury.”

Fresh off being selected in the national team, Tom Butland is a busy young man – who has got the surfing world at his feet. @tombutland

Tom’s got a massive support team behind him, his whole family, who travel the country with him when he’s competing, his friends, Oakura club, technique coach Matt Scorringe and the Vertigo Surf Shop have all had a hand in getting Tom to where he is.

Tom inherited his Dad’s surfing passion at the age of two and when the family moved to Taranaki from Wellington, 11 years ago, Tom had a surfing paradise right on his back door.

Tom has a drive for success, eagerness to finish school and is always looking forward to the next adventure, including up and coming trips to The Mentawais in Indonesia and Australia.

The Butland crew joined the Oakura Board Riders Club and Tom was thrown straight in the deep end of the world class surfing culture in the Naki.

When he finishes school, Tom hopes to do an electrical apprenticeship, and in his free time, catch as many waves as he can so eventually, he can chase the World tour.

MARK LAHOOD FILM MAKER

When Mark Lahood was a teenager all his friends were into surfing and skateboarding, so naturally he decided to buy a camera and document the action - thus began his impressive film making career. @marklahoodfilms Mark went on to make his first film, about skateboarding, titled 'Momento Mori’ at age 21 which played at the TSB Showplace. “After that I moved to Australia and started working for a surf and skate company over there and made a few more films. Then around the age of 26 a good friend of mine told me I should start filming commercially so I went to film school.” After acing film school, Mark went back and forward between Auckland, Australia and America, filming. “I was doing a variety of stuff, including Trade Me’s first ever film and shooting at Google’s head office. I learnt how to interview people and create a story, I was always asking questions from friends, even in different fields and getting inspired by them.”

A couple years ago Mark found himself back home in New Plymouth and has been here ever since, working for himself doing mostly content creation out of the Front Room office. Mark’s content varies, including work for hair dressers, florists, artists, honey makers and weddings - which he still gets nervous for, because there’s no chance of a do over. As for inspiration, Mark draws from those around him, even those who aren’t creatives themselves all influence and motivate his passion for what he does. “Jeremy Moa who I work closely with, the girls at The Virtue, friends overseas who are film makers, Charlotte Curd, Ben D'Ath and Sofie my friend from Petal and Prickle, their work inspires me.” “My favourite thing to shoot is when I get to work with other artists or start-up company’s, helping them grow and hearing their story, I get a real kick out of that.” Mark’s style includes lots of movement, storytelling and emotional expressions. “I love shooting profiles on people, the common theme I always have is people walking and reaction shots.” Mark is carefree, blunt and to the point. He doesn’t like putting himself out there too much, loves good lighting, the NBA, poker, cooking and film making. He can turn his hand to almost everything thrown his way and wants to continue growing and learning. In the long-term, Mark would love to work on a blockbuster film, probably as an editor, and has a parting piece of advice for readers – support local businesses and don’t ask for discounts.

BLAIR CLEMENT HEAD CHEF SOCIAL KITCHEN

“There wasn’t a defining moment. When I finished high school, I didn’t know what I was going to do. I knew how to cook, so I went and did a cooking course at Taranaki Polytech and then after that, I got a kitchen job.” Blair Clement’s exciting career kickstarted as a dishy for local business owner Craig Macfarlane at Macfarlane’s in Inglewood, where he worked for three years. He shifted around a bit after that, even having a stint in Aussie as a labourer for a couple of years. Moving back to NZ, Blair linked back up with Craig to open Joe’s Garage in Wellington, and in 2014 began the success that has been Social Kitchen. Today, Blair is an owner, the head chef and mastermind behind the menu of the charming and well-loved bistro in central New Plymouth. He has a team of eight and says there’s no secret behind the magic, it’s a well-executed team that hold high values and puts a lot of time into research. “Our inspiration comes from what’s going on overseas. I do a lot of research on Scandinavia because I think that’s

where a lot of food trends originate, and there’s also a couple of restaurants in Melbourne that influence us.” Despite being a professional who loves being busy in the kitchen, you won’t find him cooking at home. He loves simple food - a meat and three veg kind of meal will serve him just fine. “I like things basic and plain, before I was married my favourite dish at home was baked beans on toast. “ Blair’s first memory of cooking was when he was around the age of 14, a soup that (despite his Mum’s protests of it being delicious) was, in Blair’s words, “absolutely disgusting.” He’s come a long way since then, leading the team to being recognised as one of the best restaurants in the country in 2017, but he hasn’t done it alone. Blair gives a lot of credit to his business partner and friend Craig, who Blair says taught him a lot about what goes into running a successful restaurant where both customers and staff are happy. He’s not a cliché, red-faced and raged in the kitchen, Blair’s a chill guy whose passion lies with passing on what he’s learnt, the whole bag of tricks, to his team. He loves watching cooking shows and spending time with friends but above all nothing beats a family day at home with his wife, Jackqui and their three daughters. Blair’s a hardworking, perfectionist who doesn’t sweat the small stuff. Head into Social Kitchen we’ve heard the slow-cooked lamb shoulder is a hit... chef’s recommendation!

EMOTIONAL EATING DURING WINTER & HOW TO MANAGE IT By Michelle Yandle - a certified Health and Nutrition Coach on her way to becoming a Clinical Nutritionist with The Holistic Performance Institute.

30

If you’re someone who frequently finds yourself overeating, winter can be a particularly tricky time, especially when your triggers are emotional. What is it about Winter time that drives us towards comfort food and lots of it? As humans, we’ve evolved to ‘hibernate’ during the winter months. Perhaps that means being less active, watching more Netflix and going to bed just a bit earlier. We’ve also evolved to store energy during the colder months naturally craving warm, comforting foods, the ones that leave our bellies full and satisfied and provide us with energy to store. The lack of daylight can also have an effect on our eating. Sunlight is one of many things that trigger the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that has been shown to boost our mood. During the winter months, our daylight hours are significantly decreased and

so carbohydrates (another mood booster) are not surprisingly our easiest go-to. Along with the decrease in serotonin, Many of us also get seasonal blues, causing us to be more likely to eat emotionally, self-soothing ourselves with food. This all natural, but for many of us, it can also cause us some emotional distress if we begin to feel a bit out of control around food this time of year. However, contrary to popular belief. Emotional eating is not something to combat or to battle with. We’re not trying to stop or overcome it altogether. We’ve all heard the saying “what you resist persists?” The same logic applies to our unwanted habits. Instead, it’s about having other options, and feeling like you’re the one in charge when it comes to eating habits. So, how can we manage our cravings and begin to make room for alternatives this time of year?

PRESS PAUSE

Whenever possible, try to pause before grabbing something to eat. This helps us to remove the automatic response that leads to eating from a place of disconnect. Simply ask yourself: Am I hungry? If not, take some time to figure out what’s going on so that you can give yourself what you really need.

FEED THE NEED

The thing is, if you’re not hungry, no amount of food is going to satisfy you. Finding out what your body actually needs is going to be the single best way to overcome emotional eating. Are you sad? Journal, go for a walk or call a friend. Bored? Learn a new hobby, or go out and spend time with loved ones. Often find yourself overeating at night time? It could also be that you haven’t had enough to eat throughout the day. Be mindful of getting the nourishment your body needs through regular nutritious meals and listening to your body’s hunger cues.

EAT MINDFULLY

Whenever possible, try to sit down at a table or bench and focus on the act of eating. Even if it’s just a bag of chips or a box of biscuits. Sit down at the table, remove distractions (tv, smartphones, whatever work you’re doing) and simply eat.

LIVE THE LIVE YOU CRAVE

HEALTH WELLBEING NATURALLY Like brushing your teeth, eating wholesome food and other healthy habits, regular maintenance of your spine and nerve system makes sense. Throughout life, our bodies undergo a lot of stress whether it would be from poor posture, sport injuries or emotional stress. These stresses contribute to misalignment in the spine which may disrupt the normal function of your nerve system which controls and coordinates every part of your body. Neck pain, back pain, headaches or just 'feeling old' are our body’s way of telling you that your body isn’t working correctly... and so is poor sleep, lack of energy, decrease flexibility or poor concentration. Our team of highly qualified Chiropractors are dedicated to helping you and your family to

reach your optimal health potential by making sure that your spine and nerve system are functioning at their best. You're never too old, too young, too sick, or too healthy to benefit from chiropractic care! yoga and meditation space tucked away within the calming environment of Tahi. Their intention was inspired by a combined 45 years of experience in the wellness industry where they saw the need for a specialised approach to Mindfulness.

Opened in September last year by co-founders Amy Morice, Meegan Care and Nicola Douglas, the space has fast become a modern healing destination with a mainstream approach to natural therapies and mindfulness. Earlier this year Amy and Meegan launched the Tahi Studio, a boutique

ITU TRIATHLON WORLD CUP Each year in Autumn, up to 130 of the very best triathletes from around the globe descend upon New Plymouth to compete in one of 17 World Cup races. The race calendar spans from February to November, beginning in the Southern Hemisphere and ending in Santiago, Dominican Republic. Young athletes travel the world, often on a shoestring budget, competing for their country at the highest level in one of the most demanding endurance sport competitions on the planet. On 31st March, our city hosted one leg of the ITU (International Triathlon Union) World Cup series. It was the ninth time in the history of the competition, an outstanding achievement for New Plymouth and organisers SB Events, who are regularly challenged by international cities for hosting rights. Local support was fantastic, from the TSB Community Trust and Venture Taranaki, through to volunteers managed by Sport Taranaki, support with event permits from the New Plymouth District Council, and on-water safety provided by the New Plymouth Old Boys Surf Lifesaving Club. Local businesses embraced the event, and families opened their homes to athletes from a few days up to several months. New Plymouth is one of the few cities in the world to offer homestay accommodation to athletes competing. In the past five years, 47 families have hosted 80 athletes from 30 different countries. It’s an opportunity to create lifelong friendships and show people from every corner of the world what a great Mood we have here in Taranaki. Canadian Joanna Brown had an unforgettable first trip to New Plymouth last year. “I was greeted at the airport by my hosts and was warmed by the kiwi hospitality. I felt welcome and safe and I understood, without having to acknowledge it, that my hosts were as excited to have me visit as I was to be there. I spend about 11 months of the year on the road, and to arrive in a location that makes you feel instantly like you are at home is a massive privilege,” Joanna says. Belgian triathlete and Olympian Claire Michel is familiar with Kiwi hospitality. She competed in New Plymouth from 2014 to 2017 and made it to the podium twice. “New Plymouth is a unique race because of how many local families open their homes to triathletes, something that is unparalleled on the circuit. The generosity and welcoming spirit of the community is felt from the crowds that line the race, to the local coffee shops with signs out front marking "triathletes welcome," and the local bike shops & running stores helping with final pre-race tune-ups,” Claire says. “Sharing home cooked-meals, trying feijoa's fresh from the 34

garden, running by the wall of "eyes" on the way to winding trails of Pukekura Park, or biking by the Wind Wand along the coastal walkway on the way to the cycling track are some of my personal favourite memories of New Plymouth. The eclectic blend of artsy, urban shops and cafes nestled between the sea and mountain is what gives Taranaki its special vibe; a tranquil balance that keeps you coming back for more.”

For many, Taranaki is their favourite location to race and train for the 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run. Swiss triathlete Jasmin Weber began training in January with local man and internationally respected coach Jamie Turner. “Having the opportunity to train here in New Plymouth is just amazing,” Jasmin says. “As I'm from Switzerland, I enjoy the swims in the ocean. I also love to go out to the countryside and just ride without stopping at light signals or getting into a traffic jam. The runs on the walkway are stunning because it feels like another world to me.” Athletes took the opportunity to visit local schools and spoke of their experiences travelling and competing around the world. The athletes take on a role of ambassador for their country, and for the sport, leaving an indelible mark on our young people, and hopefully inspiring some to give it a go. This year, Italian Angelica Olmo won the women’s elite race and Australian Luke Willian took home gold in the men’s. As the event has become a staple of the Taranaki sporting calendar, other events have been built around it to create a festival of triathlon in the city. The Taranaki SuperKidz TRYathlon, Weetbix Kids TRYathlon and the WIL Sport NZ Schools Triathlon Champs were all held in the lead up to the World Cup race. It drew young triathletes and their families from all over New Zealand to compete at Ngamotu Beach and Francis Douglas Memorial College. New Plymouth is fast becoming the Triathlon capital of New Zealand.

The Art of Microblading Microblading is a form of semi-permanent make-up. Like other traditional semi-permanent brow treatments, it uses fine lines of tattoo pigments to fill in existing eyebrow hair. Where this technique differs is in its use of a manual pen-like tool with tiny needles, as opposed to a machine. The pigment is deposited into the dermis/ superficial layer of the skin, which means the hairs can be drawn on individually, and with a greater level of control than with a machine. The result is a subtle, more natural looking finish. Sinead has now microbladed over 100 sets of eyebrows.

A FREE consultation can be booked via Facebook “Book Now”. Cost is $650 (includes Brow Sculpt, 1st session + touch up/ perfecting session 4-6 weeks later) Book by Appointment Monday – Saturday.

DISCOVERING TARANAKI I grew up in a big city. In a VERY big city, actually – in Moscow, with a population of at least 12 million people. Of course, untouched nature and the absence of people is what always was the most fascinating and intriguing for me. Should I even mention how excited I was for our first visit to Taranaki, the region that from our perspective is tucked a little aside of everything? So, here’s a true ‘outsiders’ view. Words by Kseniia Spodyneiko | @thestylejungle

STRATFORD

SH3 snaking along the rugged coastline and through the rolling hills had us sold right away. Stratford, a town roughly 20 km away from the mighty Mount Taranaki, had to throw something really outstanding next day to compete with what we’ve already experienced on our way here. I think, we often arrive in towns like that with a prejudice of sort. For some Stratford might be just a gateway to Mount Taranaki, for others – a starting point of the Forgotten World Highway. The more interesting it becomes to slow down and properly explore the place itself.

do to reach it. It’s not every day that you get to walk freely among sheep and goats, right?) Despite what might seem like a depressing ride – after all, instead of prospering little towns you now see almost abandoned locations with barely 40 locals living there fulltime – Forgotten World Highway is actually a very uplifting and positive experience. It reconnects you with nature and shows how happy and free people can really be outside of office hours, traffic and stress-related illnesses. Isn’t it a reminder we all need every now and then?

Stratford turned out to be a real gem. Glockenspiel with scheduled performances in the best traditions of Disneyland, century-old swingbridge and the first theatre in this Hemisphere to show talking pictures – do never underestimate small towns!

FORGOTTEN WORLD HIGHWAY

I’d be lying if I said Forgotten World Highway wasn’t why we decided to visit Taranaki in the first place. A scenic route through a sparsely populated area with its own independent republic, endless picturesque walks and even a lavender farm with barely any other tourists in sight? Sign me in! Driving here was definitely a highlight of the whole trip. And if someone very mean asked me to pick only three must-do’s out of almost 30 points of interest along the Highway, I would name Strathmore Saddle (because who doesn’t want to spot Mt Taranaki, Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe at once?), Tangarakau Gorge (Come on, it’s 12 km of unsealed road through a beautiful bush!) and Mount Damper Falls (though not because of the waterfall itself, rather the 2 km walk through a private farm you need to 39

NEW PLYMOUTH

Library, Starbucks, weekend markets and cool magazine (MOOD, I’m looking at you) – geez, this town really has all I need. New Plymouth is a vibrant mixture of the best big busy cities are notorious for, like stunning contemporary architecture or great shopping, and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere of a region that somehow still manages to escape the tidal waves of tourists. We’ve spent the most part of the day at Pukekura Park. Seriously, that Fernery is out of this world! Dark tunnels cut right in the ground and labyrinths of plants, ponds and sliding doors make these display houses appear way larger than they really are. And then, like a modern-day superhero, my husband turned on the whole waterfall for me. No magic involved though, you can do it as well by pressing a single button opposite the Tea House. Looks spectacular!

The coolest little city in New Zealand was a description of New Plymouth that I read somewhere a while ago and boy oh boy did it live up to my expectations!

STAY & PLAY AT THE STONY

Stray away from your comfortable choices this winter - we have so many reasons to try something new, and all of those reasons come in pretty bottles. The best cocktails come from the best ingredients and you won’t get much more exquisite than the amazing products from Cardrona Distillery. Their Single Malt Whisky, Single Malt Vodka, Barrel-aged Gin and stunning liqueurs all contribute to a pretty exciting liquor cabinet. If a new go-to red is more your style, try Little Giant Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. It’s stocky and robust, perfect for a night in with good company. But some nights you want someone else to do the hard work for you, in which case you should grab a mate, throw on a jacket and head out to one of New Plymouth’s amazing bars or restaurants. You’ll have a blast!

OUR FAMILY WORKING FOR YOUR FAMILY From left: Daniel McDonald (4th generation) and Peter McDonald (3rd generation)

Four generations of McDonalds have built a real estate legacy. The name is well-known, the jingle familiar – they’ve been selling our properties since 1912. Peter works from his office in Stratford, where he’s been since 1976. It’s the same office his father Tom worked from, and his grandfather Mick when land was sold for as low as £10 an acre. Property sales were once recorded in a pocketbook and settled over a handshake, and the industry was made up entirely of men over the age of 60, a contrast to the now estimated 65% female workforce. Some things have changed; the single office is now one of eight, the oneman band is now a team of 60, and the price of land is exceptionally greater. Peter recalls a time when advertisements were single column and without photographs. He bought a polaroid 48

camera and was the first to stick photos in the window. He’s seen the arrival of open homes, computers, and the internet, and the job of a real estate agent transform from a retirement gig into a qualified career. He’s also seen dozens of faces walking the hallways of the region’s largest agency, many of those faces he’s seen for over 30 years. It’s a family business, and their staff are family. Son Daniel joined the firm in 2005 at the age of 22, the same age Dad was. Peter gives Daniel credit for the business’ recent growth – McDonald Real Estate are leaders in residential, rural and commercial sales, and they’ve got the largest rental portfolio in Taranaki. There's also Rodney Perrett to thank. The rural sales maestro began in 1998 and is largely responsible for the growth and success of the firm in South Taranaki. It’s also the support of their customers, many of whom are fourth generation clients. The team build relationships and put community first, it’s the way it’s always been.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT McDonald Real Estate’s Inglewood Office

Pam Hight and the team of property managers look after over 750 rentals across Taranaki. It's one of the company's fastest growing divisions, and the largest in the region. The staff are personable, professional and highly skilled. Their reputation has taken them to the top and it's no surprise. So why should you use McDonald Real Estate for your property management needs? NO LONG-TERM CONTRACTS!

McDonald Real Estate will NOT lock you into long-term contracts. This will give you peace of mind and a chance to see if property management will work for you. They offer monthly rolling contracts and only require one month's notice. While most other property management firms tie people into 6 or 12-month contracts, they give you the flexibility to decide.

LARGEST PROPERTY MANAGEMENT PROVIDER IN TARANAKI!

With eight offices around the mountain covering Oakura, Opunake, Hawera, Eltham, Stratford, Inglewood, Waitara, and New Plymouth - there's one near you. The staff have excellent knowledge of local communities and deep roots in the region. Taranaki is a small place where everyone knows everyone. The team know people and the market like the back of their hand, because, well, it is their backyard!

AN EXPERIENCED AND PROFESSIONAL TEAM

The team have vast experience and expertise, keep up to date with the latest training and legal requirements that can affect you and your property. Combined, they have over 75 years of experience in managing rental properties.

OFFERING THE COMPLETE BUNDLE

Finding tenants that are reliable and suited to your property is of utmost importance. The rental application process is very thorough, with over 100 checks carried out on potential tenants using a background checker only available to property managers. It's their job to make sure your property is being treated with respect. Property inspections take place every 12 weeks where a manager will go through a complete checklist. They take photos of potential issues and keep you informed of anything that needs your attention. McDonald Property Managers have the experience and support behind them to remedy any concerns - big or small. Whether it's late payments or you need a new tenant, the team will handle it quickly and fairly. They manage all expenses on your property including, rent, rates and maintenance costs.

COMPETITIVE RATES

You may be surprised to know that having a property manager is actually very affordable! You want the best return on your property investment and a property manager can help you achieve this.

THEY KEEP YOUR TENANTS HAPPY

You want your tenants to be happy so they stay with you for a long time. Staff work hard to build and maintain relationships with tenants and be a reliable and approachable point of contact for all communication or issues they may have. The team do all the work, so you don't have to.

PROPERTY OWNERS LOVE THEM TOO!

They work hard to keep property owners happy. After all, they understand that your investment needs to be looked after as if it were their own. Many of the team are property investors themselves and know what to look for and how they would like their properties treated.

FREE RENTAL APPRAISAL

You may be interested to know where your property sits in the rental market. The Property Management Team offer free rental appraisals!

ONLINE VALUATIONS VS PROFESSIONAL APPRAISALS The Residential Sales Team are finding more and more clients talking to them about the free online property valuations that several websites are now providing. While the Sales Team think it is great that more people are taking an active interest in the value of their property, they do strongly advise against relying solely on these free online valuation tools, with most experts agreeing that they should be treated as a guide only. McDonald Real Estate General Manager, Daniel McDonald, says they are actually causing quite a lot of confusion in the market. “It’s scary to think that some vendors are basing the value of their biggest asset on a calculation made without an expert setting foot on their property. Or considering the unique features of the home which haven't been taken into account with the online valuations. The problem with calculating house values using algorithms alone is that they cannot account for human emotion, which is a massive part of the house buying process.”

People often tell us they fell in love with a view, the indoor/outdoor flow, or a kitchen layout and we are yet to see an online valuation that is capable of considering these features.

It is generally accepted in the real estate industry that for the most accurate and reliable property valuation a registered valuer should be employed. A registered valuer completes years of study in the skill of property valuation and will use that knowledge, as well as their own insights, to determine an estimated value for a property. 50

Their opinion is heavily relied upon by banks and lending providers. A licenced salesperson can conduct a property valuation, using the same methods adopted by a registered valuer and with access to the same comparable sales data, but this is done at no cost. The McDonald Real Estate team are highly skilled in the art of appraising properties and are constantly reviewing their appraisal documents and improving their accuracy. They are more than happy to complete free market assessments for homeowners across Taranaki. One form of valuation that is being less and less relied upon is the Rateable Value (often also referred to as Capital Value or Government Value). The Rateable Value is the valuation developed for local authorities so that council rates can be evenly distributed. They are reviewed only every 3 years, and it is unlikely that a Valuer will set foot on your property to determine your Rateable Value. Thomas Watt from the McDonald Real Estate New Plymouth team is currently achieving an average sale price 16.9% above Rateable Value. Even though the online valuation tools give you a great insight into how much your property may be worth, it is important to remember that they can't give you the insights a trained and experienced agent can, before listing your home. The average ranges used in most of these online valuations are 20% or more, which is far too wide to be considered a professional opinion. Whether you are buying or selling, don't soley rely on an online valuation website to tell you the value of the property.

FREE APPRAISAL

You may be interested to know where your property sits in the market. For a free market appraisal of your property (by a human of course) you can contact one of our sales people located in our 8 offices around the mountain.

COMMERCIAL INVESTING

From left: Kevin Hight and Russell Atkinson

The commercial division is set to be a major player in the business brokerage game. Russell Atkinson will lead the specialty area, bringing expertise from a career in marketing and sales. Russell joined McDonald Real Estate just two months ago at the persuasion of friend and long-time McDonald team member Kevin Hight. Kevin has a face people know and trust, he’s managed the commercial sales and leasing department for 10 years, joining the board of directors in 2012. He knows the market better than most, overseeing the commercial and industrial portfolio for all of Taranaki. Brokerage is a natural progression for the firm, and at a golden time as a generation faces retirement and owners look to step away from their well-established businesses. There’s a large amount of business in the baby boomer arena, people want to exit in the next five to ten years.

for a successful sale. They’re committed to providing a service that sellers won’t find elsewhere, because business brokerage isn’t currently offered as a specialised industry in Taranaki. Russell and Kevin will use their experience, knowledge and New Zealand wide contacts to connect buyers and local sellers.

We encourage people to talk to us early, we can prepare your business for sale and get it into a situation where it’s going to be more profitable - Kevin says.

Investment in the region is growing each year. Expectation of yields has come down and interest rates are dropping. Taranaki is a desirable place to live – the lifestyle on offer is unparalleled, and centres like New Plymouth, Stratford and Hawera are currently undergoing development. The retail sector is steady and industrial real estate is thriving. The team have information packs available for prospective buyers and tenants as well as potential investors outside of Taranaki – to sell the region, not just the properties.

Russell and Kevin have the knowhow and outreach to sell any business. They’ve both owned and sold their own and understand the preparation and marketing that is vital

TECH ADVANCES FOR A RURAL GAIN McDonald Real Estate have been selling farms in Taranaki for longer than anyone can remember. Staying abreast of technology is crucial to them staying number one in the field. Using up to date technology when selling your farm is just as important as the "on farm" technology used. The Rural Team use a multitude of different technological advances to not only aid the marketing process but to also protect both vendors and purchasers. When it comes to marketing there are countless new tools available. The most exciting is the evolution of drone

52

technology. The McDonald Real Estate Rural team are able to utilise drones to photograph and video an entire farm, providing an extremely valuable impression of the property and allowing purchasers to better understand the layout and grazing systems in place. Linked in with this is the company’s use of social media and digital media avenues that provide not only local coverage, but national and international exposure for local farms. Once a farm sale has been successfully negotiated, technology still plays a part. They now have the ability to monitor agreement conditions, a prime example is the fertiliser application which can now be applied with GPS mapping and a detailed report easily made available to the purchaser. If you ask Rural Sales Manager Brent Dodunski, he’ll tell you that their greatest technological asset is the company’s website, eieio.co.nz. The site has resources freely available to any purchaser, such as important compliance documents, or their informative and accurate marketing brochures. “This allows the purchaser’s advisors, no matter where they are in the world, to access all of the information required to assist their clients in making an informed decision.”

UNPLEASANT A LESSON TO BE LEARNED

WHY E-MAIL MARKETING IS KEY FOR YOUR BUSINESS Laura Crombie - Vanguard86 Digital Marketing Agency

For marketers that live and breathe content marketing on a day-to-day basis, there is no surprise that e-mail marketing is the most effective marketing channel when it comes to getting results. Email marketing helps the reader become better educated about your brand, service or product. It also increases website traffic which social media is unable to generate like it use to. As most businesses invest a large amount of money on a well thought-out website built for getting results, you want to effectively get as much traffic to your site as possible to help maximise results for the least amount of costs. The sad truth is that there is a lot of bad email marketing practices out there. But what does it take to do good email marketing? To start here are 3 key stages you need to be aware of before you start sending emails to a database.

1. RELEVANCE

Like all businesses, the number one rule to success is understanding your customer. When a customer joins your database you should be able to know where they came from, why they engaged with your brand and what they are looking for. Understanding your database is an important metric that should not be taken lightly.

2. CONTENT

Good e-mail marketing starts with the content you’re sharing with your subscribers. Put yourself in their shoes and ask - is this something I would want to receive? Remember that your prospects don’t care about your company or your product – they care about their challenges and how you can help solve them. So create and share content that they’ll find useful and interesting.

3. PEOPLE NEED TO EXPECT IT

This is super important! Your database needs to be relevant and know about your brand or business. A database is usually made up of existing customers or people who have opted into your mail list. Even though here in New Zealand it is not illegal yet to find email addresses online it is super frowned upon and not good practice. Plus you’re more likely to have a very poor engagement rate if you were to send to people who haven’t interacted with your business before. Again this is a strong case of quality vs quantity.

5 HOW TO DO YOUR BEST WORK BY WORKING LESS If you haven’t already, listen to Foundr podcast "How to do your best work by working less" with Jason Fried. I spent an hour listening, nodding furiously (luckily in the privacy of my own home) – the title says it all really - who doesn’t want to work less? Jason Fried, founder of Basecamp (a project management software) is interviewed about his company’s philosophy on work. It pushes back what’s become the norm for many of us – “being crazy at work” It’s easy to get stuck in “busy” so here are my top takeaways from this podcast.

1. VALUE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HOURS YOU WORK

Are you measuring success and value the right way? Basecamp only measures profitability and quality – quality of life for their team, and the quality of their product. Their focus is on doing their best work and enjoying what they do - every single day. Their team are masters at prioritising and saying no, they don’t spend time on things that ‘don’t matter’. They gauge success through customer insights, sales, customer retention and of course, profitability.

2. “BUSY” IS A CULTURE

Consider cutting back your hours. Working outside your 40-hour work week is not rewarded at Basecamp. Time efficiency is celebrated. No key deadlines or meetings are scheduled on Fridays to ensure weekends remain sacred. Hard deadlines help their culture remain productive, calm, focused, and decisive. Most importantly the company’s leadership live the culture – always reinforcing its values.

3. YOUR BUSINESS IS A PRODUCT

Think of your business as a product. Products require continuous reviews and iterations to ensure they’re fit for the market. Basecamp work in 6-week cycles with clear outcomes in mind. At the end of each cycle they reflect and ask: how do we feel about our work? Are we proud of it? Do we hate it? Do we love it? Are we exhausted by it? Do we have plenty of energy for it? Are we proud of the way we did it? Are we proud of how we worked together? They apply what they learned from the previous 6 weeks in their planning for the next 6 weeks meaning they’re constantly tweaking and improving how they work.

4. TURNING OFF INSTANT RESPONSES CAN BE GOOD FOR BUSINESS

Basecamp only uses real-time chat when it helps efficiency. They believe that instant messaging distracts people getting into a ‘deep state of work’. New ideas are typically pitched in writing, facilitating considered responses. Internal team meetings are kept to a minimum and working from home is the norm. Their belief is that work is actually a solitary thing so physical meetings are infrequent but optimised. Basecamp picks one “no talk” day a week - verbally or via email. Teams take this opportunity to work without interruptions and enjoy the time to focus. This podcast resonated with me, reinforcing my own beliefs around working flexibly. At Velocite, flexibility is one of our core values and it’s something we’re all committed to. Taking the first step as a business isn’t always easy, it takes courage to give things a go. I’m looking forward to working less, are you?

Miaana Walden

I am an Associate at GQ and practice primarily in resource management, as well as in employment and civil litigation. I am born and bred in New Plymouth so I was thrilled to move back to Taranaki to join GQ in 2016, following a twoyear stint at a large law firm in Auckland.

Tēnā tātou,

I was attracted to resource management law as I love the idea of being able to assist with the development of communities, spaces and infrastructure. There is no feeling like seeing a project you have assisted with literally come to life.

I tipu ake au i raro i te korowai o tōku pou tokomanawa, tū mai Taranaki me ngā pae maunga, Kaitake, Pouakai, Patuha. Hoki mai au ki te kāinga nei kia purea e au te wai o Hangataahua. E tū ana a Puniho hei whakaruruhau mō ngā Mahanga-ā-Tairi. Ko Kevin Tokatumoana rāua ko Deneille Walden ōku mātua. Ko Joshua rāua ko Teihorangi Walden ōku tungāne. Ko Hayden Patene tāku tāne. Ko Miaana Walden ahau.

It is a privilege to now be back at home and playing a small role in the development of the city and the wider region. I am passionate about our environment and I relish that my role allows me to assist in ensuring that development is sustainable and that our natural character and heritage is appropriately protected.

Growing up in Oakura, my family have always been a ‘sports-mad, competitive bunch’ and it was actually my love for netball that led me to a career in law. It was on the netball court with the referees that some of my best arguments were shaped. I was fascinated by the fact that two people could read the same situation and interpret it in completely different ways.

I am particularly interested and excited about Taranaki’s transition towards renewable energy and the opportunities this presents. With the Prime Minister’s recent announcement that a Clean Energy Centre is to be established in Taranaki, we are well placed as a region to be leaders in ensuring this transition is sustainable and effective for all sectors.

After completing my law degree and a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Māori studies) at the University of Otago I was fortunate enough to find my perfect fit at GQ early on in my legal career. I am an Associate in our family law and Te Tira Hau Ture (Māori legal services) teams. I love the sense of accomplishment that comes with solving legal issues and being in a position where I am helping others.

I am also passionate about ensuring that all lawyers and other professionals practice well to ensure that they can produce the best results for their clients as well as live a meaningful and healthy life for themselves and their families. I believe that Taranaki offers a unique opportunity for professionals – we have exciting clients, projects and developments yet short commutes and a family-focused community.

I regularly appear in the Family and Māori Land Court providing advice to clients in all areas of family law, alternative dispute resolution and general advice about Māori legal issues affecting individuals, organisations, whānau, hapū and iwi.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family, friends, my partner and our adorable dog and cat. I try to lead an active lifestyle and love to make the most of our beautiful coastline and stunning parks and walkways – usually with our dog in tow! Get in touch with Rebecca via rebecca.eaton@gqlaw.nz

There are a lot of exciting commercial and community initiatives happening in Taranaki at the moment but I am particularly excited about the growth and prosperity of our Māori economy. Outside of work, I enjoy exploring the beauty that Taranaki has to offer, photography, playing tennis and netball. Get in touch with Miaana via miaana.walden@gqlaw.nz

HOW TO CREATE CONTENT THAT CRUSHES ON SOCIAL Hayden Shearman of Strategy Collective shares insider tips for creating engaging social media content that gets business humming. Shortly after the GFC, I returned to Auckland from London and struggled to find work amidst a dearth of marketing vacancies at the time. So I turned to one of my passions—running—by starting a running coaching business. Lacking a huge advertising budget to get it rolling, it was content marketing, in the form of Facebook and blogging, that quickly grew the business into New Zealand’s largest in-person running business (with over 1000 runners training with us each year). Now, at Strategy Collective, I’m helping other businesses do the same by making the most of today’s democratised media landscape. More Kiwis are active on social media (at 71% of us) than watch freeto-air television (at only 54%) and this levelled playing field presents a huge opportunity for us all, no matter how small your business, to grow loyal audiences (who become loyal customers) through creating great content.

1. KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE

It goes without saying that great content should align with your audience’s interests (whether that be coffee, hair, fitness, or property investing) but it should also mirror your audience’s values, language and core motivations.

But that’s not how to build trust. Instead, offer your best upfront. How many free-to-air Jamie Oliver TV shows did it take before you bought one of his books or products? When in doubt, don’t ask, give, give, give.

As marketing guru Seth Godin put it, is your audience’s core motivation a ¼ inch drill bit or is it the sense of fulfilment from having installed a bookcase with the help of a couple of ¼ inch holes drilled with that drill bit?

We love stories. It’s why Game of Thrones has held our attention for three full days of screen time! In fact, stories are so powerful that they can trigger hormonal responses like oxytocin (to stories that promote empathy), dopamine (to pleasurable stories) and cortisol (to stressful stories). So, you’re not just telling stories, you’re creating a chemical connection between you and your audience.

2. GIVE YOUR BEST

The temptation when sharing free content online is to save the gold only for when customers have paid. 64

3. TELL YOUR STORY

4. BE YOURSELF

Avoid sounding like your university lecturer or a textbook at all costs! The best content on social media is just that, it’s social. It looks and feels just like you would if you were interacting with friends at a dinner party. Authentic, passionate, empathetic, caring, engaging.

5. ASK GREAT QUESTIONS

In that dinner party situation, an engaging person would keep the conversation moving by asking questions and actively listening. Mark Zuckerburg has expressly stated that Facebook’s algorithm prioritises “posts that spark conversations and meaningful interactions between people”. So, how can you be a conduit for those discussions?

6. LOVE YOUR AUDIENCE

I’d love to chat about getting your content crushing it on social. Plus, our support can be partially funded through NZTE’s capability voucher scheme. Let’s do coffee!

In recent years, we’ve seen the rise of the microinfluencer—social media profiles with less than 100,000 highly engaged followers. Kim Kardashian has 140 million followers on the Gram, but there’s no way she can keep up with the engagement rates of a passionate content producer with a loyal tribe of just 5000.

Kevin Kelly famously said that all you need to build a business is 1000 true fans. If you’ve nurtured their trust and generously given of yourself, they’ll become customers. And if 1000 fans gave you $3 per day (less than a coffee a day), you’d immediately have a million dollar business. Boom. Building trust and loving your audience goes a long way!

Great leadership and great culture give businesses and their employees wings. Charlotte McIsaac heads up our People and Culture consulting team. TARANAKI'S VERY OWN ANGEL Words by Jenna Houghton

Sometimes a message out of the blue, can make a rough day better. Michelle Ramage has countless rough days hearing from vulnerable families facing hardship with nowhere to go. Their stories are unthinkable and their situations often a result of chance or tragedy. Michelle is a founder and point person for the Roderique Hope Trust, which provides emergency housing to struggling families for up to 12 weeks. It’s a 24-hour job, and one with minimal pay, but a message of gratitude from a former recipient now back on her feet, makes it all worthwhile.

“In 2015 I started to notice why kids weren’t going to school. Families were coming in and saying, ‘We’ve got nowhere to live,’” Michelle says. “There’s no one to turn to locally, there are options for singles but nowhere for families. It’s a massive issue in Taranaki and there are no resources to tap into.” After a brainstorming session the trio decided to put their energy into the growing socioeconomic issue, and the Russells bought the Trust’s first emergency house. “The house in Bell Block was a dive, it didn’t have a kitchen floor. Paul and Joy gutted it and turned an absolute squalor of a house into something stunning. It says to a family that’s lost all hope and direction, ‘welcome home.’” 66

It’s the generosity of people like the Russells and fellow landlords who offer up their houses, that make it possible. It’s also local business people who offer their services or hold charity events to raise money for the Trust.

We haven’t by any stretch done this by ourselves. So many people have helped us get to where we are. It’s when businesses and charities join forces and resources combine that we can make tangible and lasting changes.

The Trust has five houses in the region; two in Bell Block, one in New Plymouth and two in Hawera. It’s more than Michelle could have pictured three years ago when she, Paul and Joy Russell came up with the idea. Paul and Joy were looking to give back to the community and Michelle had seen the effects of homelessness in her day job as a truancy officer for Tu Tama Wahine.

The board of trustees is formed of local professionals, among them a real estate agent, police officer, communication specialist and an architect. The team flew to Auckland early on to meet with VisionWest Community Trust, an organisation on the same mission to end homelessness and poverty in their communities. It was

a field trip to learn all they could from people leading by example, and a trip to confirm they were on the right track. The Trust isn’t simply out to provide temporary shelter, the goal is life-long changes. Tu Tama Wahine provide social workers who can assist with budgeting, counselling, job and house searches.

If we’ve got healthy people, we’ve got healthy families. And if we’ve got healthy families, we’ve got healthy communities.

But Michelle doesn’t see a respite anytime soon given the government predicts an increase in demand for affordable housing from the soon-to-retire baby boomers. There’s also a current increase of tenants losing homes because their landlords are selling up. The phone rings approximately every 48 hours, and Michelle will always

answer because she’s passionate about helping her community. It’s something she believes she was born to do. Often people ask how they can help, and soon the Trust will have a second storage shed to hold donations from the public. Furniture, unused appliances, surplus bedding and towels. Every bit of it helps.

Q&A SALLY-ANN MULLIN “

POSITIVITY BRINGS POSITIVITY, AND NOTHING GOOD EVER HAPPENS AFTER 3AM.

Sally-Ann Mullin may be a boss lady killing it in Auckland but she's a Naki girl at heart who still loves to come home and check in with all her local favourites. She's far from sipping an Ozone coffee at Fitzroy beach every day, Sally is currently the Fashion Director of Bauer Media New Zealand and the Director of Bauer Media's new venture, The Fashion Department. Sally has had an amazing life long career in the fast paced fashion and beauty industry, from editing Fashion Quarterly to gracing our screens as a judge on Project Runway NZ. She even had a decade long stint in film and television working on the costumes for some of our most memorable local dramas. Sally gifts her talent and experience to every brand she has worked with - she was instrumental in two consecutive 360 brand award wins by Fashion Quarterly and the growth of the Miss FQ millennial brand. Today, Sally is still evolving and is excited for the future that is still to come in her industry:

"As a passionate supporter of New Zealand fashion, I have a relentless enthusiasm for all facets of NZ design and look forward to many more adventures within our industry in the coming years." We managed to sneak in some time to chat to Sally about her career, what she does in her down time and her life mantra.

DO YOU HAVE A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER THAT LEADS YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

It’s been more like many small defining moments. My career trajectory hasn’t been linear or traditional in any way. It’s taken lots of twists and turns around beauty, film and media. Despite that, I’ve always believed in my ability and vision and I’ve had the confidence to back myself and put my hand up for some big roles; often ones I wasn’t qualified or ready for, but had the innate knowing I was the right candidate. For me it’s been the various men and women in managerial positions in film, fashion and media over the years who believed in me enough to take a punt on the wild card that have defined my career, for that I will always be thankful. It’s something I try to pay forward when I’m hiring for my own teams.

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE MANTRA?

Cover featuring Eden Bristowe from Bell Block

Believe in yourself, work hard and take chances. Be kind. Family and friendships are everything. Respect and listen to your elders; they have been here longer than you so they probably know a thing or two about life and how to manage it. Positivity brings positivity, and nothing good ever happens after 3am. 69

HOW HAS THE INDUSTRY CHANGED SINCE YOU FIRST STARTED?

So much changed I could write a novel. When I started out in media, life was easy; we didn’t have to fight for your attention. Most people watched free-to-air television, saw the 6pm news every night for their nightly news updates and consumed fashion from the pages of magazines. There just weren’t alternative options. With the popularity of social media, specifically Instagram and Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, the media landscape has changed rapidly and the way consumers can receive information along with it. People can be inundated with visual and written content on all subjects 24/7 if they desire. It’s meant as an industry we have had to evolve, become more multifaceted in our practices and try new things to keep up. The majority no longer work in a siloed way on one product, you’ll find most of us in the media now will wear many hats, i.e. write, present, have a podcast, write a blog etc. I think it’s positive and it’s forced the industry as a whole to try harder and be better.

WHAT KIND OF RESPONSIBILITIES DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL?

I’ve recently moved into a new role as fashion director for Bauer Media. It’s a new role and fairly multi-faceted to be honest, no day is the same and I’m never at my desk. I run a team that creates all fashion content, covers and market pages for many of NZ’s most-loved magazine brands including Fashion Quarterly, Simply You, Kia Ora, NEXT, Good Health and Wellbeing, Woman’s Day, Woman’s Weekly and Australia Women’s Weekly NZ. I don’t attend all the shoots of course, because at any given day there are many but I generally know what is going on across these titles. We also work with clients to shoot creative campaigns or branded ad material for them which is a new area we are moving into. Much of my time is spent doing fashion-related special projects like shows or events. I also work as a consultant to fashion brands, curate ranges for department stores and speak at events when I’m asked.

beautifully whenever she went out. Our parents also made the conscious effort to expose my brother and I to fashion, music, art, ballet and theatre as children and let us know there was a big world out there outside of Rahotu.

WHEN YOU CATCH A MOMENT FOR YOURSELF WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?

Generally it’s anything in, around or on the water. I live close to the sea and walk on the beach with my dog whenever possible. I’ve also recently learnt to sail so I’ve been getting away to do that whenever I can. It’s nice to do something so far from my day to day and I’m still learning but its becoming a great passion.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU COME HOME TO TARANAKI?

I bike along the walkway, visit Fitzroy Beach, eat at Social Kitchen, drink Ozone coffee, get a beer and check in with a long lost pal at West End Precinct, see an art show at The Govett Brewster, sit at the table with my dad Paddy while he tells me amazing old stories – each time I’m home a new one, or several are told. I’ll also visit my beautiful aunts and spend time talking and laughing with my mum Philly. *books flight to New Plymouth* #THC

IS FASHION IN YOUR BLOOD OR YOUR GENES?

That’s a hard question. Yes and no. I feel like in some ways I’m the black sheep or anomaly of my family, predominantly because my path and passions have been quite different from the rest. I grew up on the coast and come from a farming background so fashion wasn’t exactly in the forefront of the mind day to day. That being said, my mother was and is a stylish woman and knew how to put things together, plus she loved NZ fashion and magazines and we always had the latest issue of FQ in the house which had a big influence. I admired the way even while working on the farm, she would put her work clothes together in a chic considered way and she loved dressing up 70

THE QUINTESSENTIAL CELEBRANT A ceremony is an outcome. It is an outcome derived from a significant amount of preparation and planning. Full Circle Bespoke Life Events have been leading ceremonies for Taranaki families’ couples and the community since 2009. Our role as a celebrant is a position of great honour, profound privilege and one that we take much pride in. Our role is to develop, deliver appropriate and meaningful contemporary ceremonies, that meet the needs of the diverse communities in Aotearoa-New Zealand. Potential clients are largely unaware that on average it takes between 12-15 hours of effective collaboration to develop a personal and meaningful marriage or civil union ceremony. Equally 15 – 20 hours to develop and lead a remarkable funeral service. The public only ever sees the final outcome - the ceremony. However, it is critical to note that the outcome of any ceremony is only as successful as the preparation process. Our client processes include numerous face to face consultations, meetings, frequent emails, regular phone calls, ceremonial development, ceremony writing, rehearsals, travel time and of course the actual delivery of the ceremony itself. We are proud to have significant points of difference that put us at the leading edge of celebrancy in New Zealand. For instance, our online Ceremony Bot™ The Smart Wedding Ceremony Planner is a world first as a state-of-the-art ceremony planning tool (available free to our clients and online for purchase in the Automio

Marketplace). This particular tool assists our clients to work smarter and not harder when planning their ceremonial details with us. We strongly believe that part of being a professional celebrant is to be credible in our vocation. For us, our credibility as a celebrant provider is ensuring that we are appropriately qualified, trained and experienced to perform the work we do within our community. Anyone can call themselves a celebrant. Regrettably, celebrants work within a largely unregulated environment in New Zealand. This means that you may get everything from the ‘cut and paste’ type celebrant though to the vocational celebrant (like us) and everything in between. The time-honoured adage that ‘you get what you pay for’ rings true in the celebrant world. My advice to any potential client wishing to engage a celebrant is 'buyer beware’ as not all celebrants are equal in either quality or experience. Ultimately the choice is yours. Our philosophy is that we pride ourselves in making sure that we are formally trained in our profession and that ongoing professional development is an integral part of the ongoing success of our business. That philosophy in turn supports and adds credibility and peace of mind to the work we do with our clients. We simply want to be the very best celebrants that we can be. Your ceremony is the most important entity to us and we will always raise the bar to ensure that your expectations are not only met but exceeded. Full Circle Bespoke Life Events – credible and proven celebrants that you can unreservedly trust with your special occasion.

6 KEY QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR POTENTIAL CELEBRANT

2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

What services and products are included in your fee and are there any additional costs? What formal qualifications and training do you currently have that supports your role as a professional celebrant? What experience do you have as a celebrant and can you provide current testimonials in support of your work? What is your ceremonial process if we engage with you as our celebrant of choice? What are your points of difference from other celebrants in the industry? Do you currently belong to any industry related organisations that support your profession as a celebrant? i.e. The Celebrants Association of New Zealand (CANZ)

Can’t recommend Sam highly enough! He is the most personable celebrant I have ever come across, giving so much time and love to not just our wedding day but the meetings leading up to it. Presents himself so well and incredibly professional. Also is a great MC! Thanks so much for making our day extra special Sam. - Annalee & Trent

One thing that is blissfully obvious when people walk through the Boho Studio doors - is that we absolutely love the heck out of what we do.

Boho Bridal Design creates effortlessly cool wedding gowns for the modern bride. Based in New Plymouth this boutique bridal design business is founded by Taranaki born and blissfully freespirited sister duo Abbey & Lisa. Both Boho designers have an enthusiasm for creating fiercely fashionable wedding gowns that are anything but ordinary. Their intention is to create gowns that reflect the brides who wear them; they are soulful, playful and bohemian at heart. Designing and creating gowns gives the girls the freedom to produce dresses that confront the traditional and offer brides a striking and effortlessly elegant alternative. The newest collection is a reflection of Abbey & Lisa’s passion for their work and showcases the maturity in their design processes. Their attention to detail and their desire to create the perfect gown has led to a collection that is both graceful, fiercely unique and truly beautifully bohemian. Our vision includes taking our Taranaki based business founded on love to international heights. Soon you will be able to find our gowns all over the world and we are currently stocked in Dunedin NZ, and throughout Australia. Everything we do is done with love, from our lace selection, personalised service, to the follow-up correspondence. Whether your style is soulful, playful, or full of sass, the Boho sisters have got you covered. www.bohobridaldesign.com @bohobridaldesign
