On May 11, 1965, after playing a concert at Mississippi State Univer-
sity, Johnny Cash made Starkville his home for the night. His stay was so memorable that it inspired him to write his song “Starkville City Jail” – for those were his infamous accommodations! Local legend says that he was arrested during a late night run picking wildflowers from a Starkville residence. Rumor has it that when he came back for another concert five years later, he gave his arresting officers front row seats. While your visit is guaranteed to be much more hospitable, the “Man in Black’s” escapades inspired Starkville’s

fall. The weekend features nationally recognized musical headliners, lectures, a community redemption service and other activities honoring Cash’s life and music. During the 2007 festival, the Starkville Police Department awarded Cash a posthumous pardon for his 40 year old trespass.

A
Starkville’s OLD MAIN DISTRICT is the heart of the downtown area. It is named for “Old Main,” the first dormitory on the MSU Campus. Before the dormitory was destroyed by a fire in 1959, it was considered to have been the largest college dormitory in the United States.
B
Bricks salvaged from the Old Main fire were used to build the Chapel of Memories and Carillon Tower, one of many notable campus buildings.
Located at the crossroads of your Mississippi experience, Starkville is an easy stop for the night with four-lane highway access to metropolitan areas such as Jackson, MS; Birmingham, AL; and Memphis, TN. The Golden Triangle Regional Airport is located just 14 miles from Starkville and offers daily flights. Starkville is a Mississippi Hills Hertiage Area www.mississippihills.org
