VICTORIA UNIVERSITY (VUW) 4TH YEAR tutor: VICTORIA WILLOCKS (VUW Faculty) The idea of Heritage is defined as something that is handed down from the past, envoking a sense of nostalgia. Cuba x Dixon design studio explores the idea of refortification of design within the urban densification that is occuring within the built environment today. Therefore careful and with a virtuoso sense of craft and structural integration must be undertaken to resolve a coherent and fitting design.

6

The design project titled the ‘King and the Jester’ explores the idea of the fusion on heritage and contemporary design. Restorring power with the Former BNZ building through fortification of a ground up approach as opposed to a hanging and parasitic approach within the TG Mcarthy building. Hanging programs and cantelevering multifunctional study rooms which can be used by the occupants. Joining the days of future past, through multiple instances in the design, most notibly through the double skin facade study cubby space identified as a focal point within the construction drawings. Attempting to restore value the the heritage buildings through new program and new life while preserving heritage elements and respecting the original architectural elements. Through circulation and program distribution, the attempt at blending both heritage and modern was achieved through the bleeding of program through circulation, while bringing new life into Cuba St, with the implementation of a student community HUB, filled with apartments, student facilities and gathering spaces. Exploring the junction between the new and old.

7

Double Skin Facade - Heritage x Modern

Integrated double skin facade as occupiable study cubby space acting as the threshold between the modern and contemporary acting as a key heritage approach

8

Suspension x Rebuilding

Respectively restoring power the the former BNZ building by building from the ground up, while suspending new programs within the proposed intervention, invertically mimmicking one another. Key Strategy for urban densification.

Circulation Space

Blending both Heritage and Modern together through circulation and level changes to experience the gradient change. TG Mcarthy building acting as the mediating space between the two.

national university of singapore tutor: WINSTON LIM (NUS Faculty) Architecture for the people, by the people A project done during my exchange in Singapore, dealing with new housing typologies that were foreign from the eye’s of a New Zealander.

10

Exploration of the idea of a ground up initiative, guided by the brief was thoroughly analysed and studied from a fresh perspective. Integrating a foreign New Zealand aspect to the design methodology and to the design itself, attempting to break away from the typical Singaporean HDB typology. The main goal of the proposed design provides space for each individual homeowner to express their own individuality through expanding their current units on to a provided floor/ balcony plate. Therefore over time, the sky gallery would have a multitude of diverse unit facades and can be shown through an expressive gesture. The sense of expressive gesture is not only shown through the units, but through the formulation and methodologies when approaching the initial massing stages. Acknowledging the observed site conditions and proactively reacting to issues and opportunities at hand. Considered as the final frontier of the edge of Queenstown, before the green conservation to the north, integration of a complex form that does not intrude, but blend the two existing conditions together. The intensive study of proximity reaction towards the site boundaries within a parametric manner was a key factor in which gave birth to the overall form of the proposed design. Certainly unseen within the regular HDB typology seen in Singapore and the surrounding context

11

A strong, deliberate design massing was intensity studied, exploring different densities of which the scheme would work at. Initially starting from a medium density (PR=2.8) to an end density of 3.5. Reiterating the core ideal of merging and bridging the two exisiting conditions on the site. Serpentine form along with terraced edges create a symbiotic relationship that benefits both the immediate site along with Skyville and Skyterrace respectively. Creating a permeable courtyard creating indoor and outdoor flow through the main housing blocks, creating a familiar sense and the attempt at recreating the kampong ethos within a modern and contemporary manner.

12

13

14

15 The project overall attempts to take the conventional HDB aspects such as housing units, but interpreting the manner through foreign eyes and methodologies. Reflecting Singapore’s diverse culture giving a sense of individuality and expressiveness to the people and the building. Letting people voice and shape their own space for their own functions. Exposure to cultural and methodological differences between New Zealand and Singapore, helped me personally to develop a new skill set and sparked my interest in Medium-High Density housing along with the use of VR in architecture. It is also worth the note, that the use of VR visualization during the final presentation of design, was the first ever done in NUS, with various of the panel members along with studio colleagues acclaimming that the visualization as a successful representation of the design.

victoria university of wellington tutor: rory tungatt Harmoninity - in regards to a practical and conceptual sense looks at the harmony and balance between differing architectural elements and programs.

16

One of the two 3rd year keystone projects undertaken for design at a bachelor level dealing with more practical constraints which are present within practice - more specifically tight programmatic arrangement, to drive conceptual desires. Exploring a juxtaposing methodology to drive concepts and design intent within the design. Primarily juxtaposing structural elements, materiality and the ideas of Public vs Private, Massey vs Victoria and the Audience and the performer. Using architecture to define these elements within a spatial manner, using different materiality and thresholds to define and refine the idea as a whole, while still acknowledging the issues and opportunities that the side and project brief provides. Thinking critically about site parameters to derive volumes through rigorous massing exercises. To not only identify thresholds of design but to also legibly link elements into the present, yet dull site of the proposed design, intending to rejuvinate the area and to also create a vibarant learning space for not only public but also current students.

victoria university of wellington tutor: nabil adir A catharsis can be defined as the action of purifying or the cleansing of emotions which is directly related to pity and fear. The second of the two 3rd year keystone projects undertaken at VUW at a bachelor level. Dealing with more of a narrative driven design research. Utilizing the idea of techtonics and careful integration of structural elements within a Wellington context to develop a design proposal. Therefore, through art and architecture or any extreme change in emotion can eventually result in renewal and restoration. Emulating the narrative of an earthquake was deemed as another central idea which reinforced the idea of catharsis, shifting between the idea of order and chaos, ultimately resulting in a sense of renewal as people move within the built environment. The careful consideration of structure integrated within design was implemented showing the juxtaposition of the two conditions that doned on the underlying concept of the design.

victoria university of wellington tutor: achille egard The idea of ‘Masak & Makan’ - Cooking & Eating is an essential ritual that we as humans engage in everyday life. It is central and crucial to our nature as we live. Analogue heavy driven design, dealing with a more physical approach to delibirate a design, through research and exploration of drawing, geometry and especially materiality, to propose a flexible and yet kinetic design. It is not only a time consuming ritual but also an active ritual in which we share with others around us. But throughout the day we as humans prepare and take part in this ritual at least three times a day.

is is

Focusing on the idea and tradition of ‘three squares a day’ as it refers to the idea of eating three full, hearty meals throughout the day. Indulging and consuming breakfast, lunch and dinner, as it is a core ritual in everyday life. The project heavily relied on the exploration of ideas through drawing, and model making to comminicate the idea.

victoria university of wellington tutor: tane moleta + valentina soana The origami pavilion revolved around the idea of using parametric design to communicate the idea through atmosphere, site and details. Primarily using the tools of parametric design and grasshopper to generate a pavilion that is proposed to be installed on the Wellington Waterfront. Developing key parametric and digital skills to pinpoint and identify various core logical moves that influence the whole idea of design. Learning to think in a different manner in terms of design and methodologies that come within. Narrowing down the key ideas and logic behind the ideas of arts anc crafts, such as paper folding, fabric scrunching and painting to emulate within the design process. Transitioning from a given logic and idea into a built design that can be intergrated within the enviroment in which we stand. The project was heavily influenced by digital design and the limitations the logics taken. The transition and communication of these ideas were centralized through the re-iterations and process in truly finding a core logic that can be emulated through digital parametric design.

09. Personal photography as a hobby, documenting travels, experiences and people met. Being able to travel around South East Asia during my exchange and New Zealand as my second home, explores a broad subject matter in terms of the photography world. Heavily influenced by my uncle, teaching me compositional techniques and artistic qualities which are present in photos. Capturing moments, scenes and people.
