MEGUMI HIRAMOTO, MA REFLECTION. FOREWORD.

Foreword.

Let’s Be Reflective. A designer’s job is not just to create beautiful visual materials. We find a problem, come up with a visual solution, and finally design it in an effective way to speak to the audience’s heart. This is a comprehensive, creative process in which we reflect— think deeply and carefully—about a problem, and reflect—mirror—the ideas into a design with a touch of our personalities and styles. I want to honor the fact that the visual materials we create arise from reflection. This book is a collection of my work that reflects my perception, thoughts, and passion that developed through each design process. This is Reflection.

Project Title Aston Martin Annual Report 2019

Objective This project requires the designer to find an established corporation whose brand image and identity could be elevated with a stronger annual report or sustainability report. By understanding the brand image and reflecting it visually and aesthetically through design decisions, a new annual report represents the brand in a more progressive way. Approach I chose Aston Martin Lagonda’s annual report for this project. While the original annual report lacks legibility and the execution does not communicate the luxurious feeling of the brand, I decided to convey the sense of exclusivity and international luxury, which is what automotive design of Aston Martin represents to the world. Speed and aerodynamic style are reflected by the use of lightweight typefaces and elegant layouts.

Project Title Type Classification Posters

Objective This project requires the designer to understand type classification and design a series of three posters that educate the audience about it in a memorable way. Each poster describes different types of classification categories and the three posters work as a compatible set visually as well as conceptually. Approach I first decided to use Helvetica from Lineale Neo-grotesque classification because it is widely used and popular. I took a direction to play with easy, yet fun and memorable copies with a sassy, girl’s attitude that represents the characteristics of the typefaces. To complement the attitude of the copies, the color palette became fresh, exciting, and youthful, which is pleasing to eyes.

Project Title Type Experiment Poster

Objective This project requires the designer to synthesize a word and express emotions, feelings and meaning of a word through experimental typography and composition. By paying attention to details such as structure of letters and each strokes gives a life to the word visually as well as emotionally. Approach I chose a word “frantic to base my experiment on. I extracted the sense of roughness and being out of control from the word and experimented with typography to deliver them with various materials. Using the sharp, hard strokes that charcoal creates as a base, I used my finger, a kitchen string and oil paint to elevate the sense of the word.

Project Title Bridge / The V&A Museum Newsletter Magazine

Objective This project requires the designer to establish a monthly museum newsletter with a new direction. By understanding the elements and the structure of monthly newsletter format, the project nurtures a designer’s skill of flexibility within the restricted format. Approach I decided to design a newsletter magazine for the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Naming a magazine “Bridge” as a connection between the museum and the audience, I designed it visually powerful and memorable to make the audience easily get engaged in and want to come to the museum. To give freshness to the prestigious museum, I decided to use a youthful, striking color palette as well as impactful imagery. Dynamic and playful layout stresses modernity and youthfulness.

Project Title What’s Going On? / Global Fashion Conference Material Design

Objective This project requires the designer to find a conference whose materials could be improved by a new direction that reflects the concept of the conference. Designing multiple materials for a conference that works as a set shows the skill of system design and flexibility. Approach I found the design direction of Global Fashion Conference 2018 could be reshaped to reflect the topic of the conference, which is sustainability and the future of the fashion industry. I incorporated imagery of sustainable fashion with a unique green color palette. Taking into consideration the fact that the conference was held at University of the Arts and for the next generation, I brought a fresh impression through my design decisions.

Care. Access. Utility.

Objective This project requires the designer to identify what kind of mobile app people would like to have and design interfaces for the app. An important aspect of the project is not only having good features and functionality, but also having an appealing and easy design that the user is willing to use. Approach As a person who is not familiar with American healthcare system, I found that finding a doctor is not an easy thing. Therefore, I decided to conceptualize an app that makes it easier for the user to find the right doctors. I developed the interfaces with light colors and rounded shapes to make the overall feel light and positive.
