I c hose a loc al tofu shop an d dec ided to visit them in Sa n Jo se. Chester Nozaki an d his wife are on e of the few loc al tofu shop s (S a n Jo se Tofu Co. ) aroun d that produc e han d-made tofu c ompared t o m a c hi nes. Un expec tedly, the proc ess is laborious an d physic ally de m a nd i ng . B ec ause it is a labor that is c on sidered to be taken with pride a nd ho nest y, I wanted to c reate somethin g that reflec ted their spirit. Upon researc hin g, I foun d bambooto be a great material th a t resem bl es their produc t an d work ethic . After havin g researc hed the many types of birdhouses t ha t were a l ready available, it dawn ed on me that there weren’ t really m a ny ‘ho m es’ for Hummin gbirds. I struggled with fin din g a material tha t wa s bo t h sustain able an d c olorful until a frien d of min e mention ed a n a r t i st who c reated sc ulptures out of rec yc led skateboards. BOOM. Tha t i d ea in spired me to make a birdhouse of rec yc led skateboards; bei ng bo t h c olorful an d sustain able. The great thin g was that many sk a t e sho p s had broken boards in a rec yc lin g bin available. I thin k that this projec t was partic ularly valuable bec au se I no t o nly learn ed n ew skills both (physic ally an d on c omputer), but a l so fo und the whole proc ess in c redibly rewardin g. After visitin g the Trin c hero Win ery an d seein g there ma ny d i f ferent labels, I went to the stores an d interviewed many c ustomers o n t hei r preferen c e on labels an d what attrac ted them to it. I found t ha t m a ny were the image of many different c harac ters bon din g over a bo t t l e o f win e gave me the idea of people ran gin g in ages en joyin g t hi s w i ne. A whimsic al approac h was born , whic h brought me to a more i l l ust ra t ive approac h. Addin g a pop of c olor added more dimen sion and a t t ra c t ed the eye. Han d drawin g the c harac ters was fun , I usually illustrate o n t he c o m puter so this was refreshin g to break free from my n ormal ro ut i ne a nd get out of my c omfort zon e. I n the past logo design s were n ot my stron gest stren gt h, but c l o se to rec ently I 've c ome to start en joyin g them.
