Hammerhead Roof & Exterior Cleaning Has You Covered! Hammerhead Roof & Exterior Cleaning has paved the way to clean surroundings with a SoftWash System™ that eliminates dirt, stains, mold, and algae that may be destroying the aesthetic appearance and structural integrity of your roof and your home. Did you know that those stains may represent a type of algae that feeds on the filler between asphalt shingles? Not only does the algae create a nasty, black appearance as it destroys your roof, according to Hammerhead’s website, the “algae dislodges the granules that protect and give color to your shingles and reduces the lifespan of your roof.”
Manufacturers Association (ARMA). You can rest assured that all Hammerhead employees h a v e passed a thorough criminal background check and been approved by Ask the Seal, and have received the “Seal o f Approval” before being issued photo identification. This insures that you can trust our team members on your property or in your home or office! Hammerhead Roof & Exterior Cleaning is located at 3152 Little Rd, #213, Trinity. To schedule a FREE in-home or in-office estimate, call 800-700-4140. Learn more about this exclusive Softwash system by visiting hammerheadsoftwash.com, or email: info@hammerheadsoftwash.com.
If that’s not scary enough, this fungal infestation can do more damage after pressure washing. Pressure washing will further spread the fungal spores throughout the area in question, causing even more problems in the future.

The SoftWash System™ uses a mix of biodegradable ‘mildewcides’, algaecides, soaps and low-pressure pumps for a deep clean that kills 100% of the algae without damaging your roof or your structural exterior,” Joe explains. “Unlike pressure washing we pump from a 12-volt system. This means there is no damage from over use of pressure. Our Surfactant lasts up to 6 times longer than pressure washing and comes with a 5-year warranty. Plus, we avoid walking roofs as much as possible, especially barrel tiles,” Joe added. Hammerhead Roof & Exterior Cleaning services include cleaning pool decks & cages, sidewalks, driveways, pavers, fences, residential & commercial exteriors, mobile home exteriors, decks, docks, playground equipment and more! To become a Softwash Systems approved company you have to maintain a 50 point checklist that includes standards of excellence in professionalism, equipment usage and maintenance, chemical handling & applications, safety, and education.” Throughout this extensive list, employees are encouraged to stay current and follow all regulations set forth by the Asphalt Roofing
Another Happy Roof! I am the President of our Homeowners Association in Fl. I heard about Hammerhead Softwash through a friend who had contacted them to clean their roofs. After meeting with Joe Marchiselli, and having a demo section of my roof done for no charge, I was thrilled with the outcome and immediately contracted them to do all 20 units in our complex. Needless to say, our residents were thrilled with the job they did. Their staff were extremely polite and helpful. They even moved and put back furniture and plants while doing the work. Our members immediately phoned me and wanted to pay right away and couldn’t believe the price. We had our roofs cleaned 3 years ago by a pressure washing company and weren’t happy with the result. Hammerhead’s job by far excelled our previous cleaning and we are very happy to recommend them to anyone. -John Strong, President Norstar Cove Villas

Hometown STORY
Steve & Theresa Hyatt Doing Good Things Behind Your Back
Steve & Theresa’s perpetual passion for life and for helping people kept them going, and eventually, led them to invest in The Better Back Store in New Port Richey as their family business. Theresa’s Mom, Gail Scriber, had worked for The Better Back Store in Palm Harbor when it was owned by Bob and Dora Bell, and she loved it! When the Bells retired, Steve, Theresa & Gail decided to make it their family business, to help people overcome back discomfort each and every day. The family chose to relocate the business to their home community of New Port Richey in 2008. Gail has since retired, but she still loves to help out at the store. Theresa explained, “We so enjoy being able to help customers with guidance and everyday solutions for living more comfortably. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing someone walk through the door with pain written all over their face and having them sit in a zero gravity perfect chair. You can visibly see relief take the place of the pain. Plus, we are able to customize seats for our customers, so they can ride comfortably in their vehicles, instead of suffering. We do good things behind your back!” When they went to get their marriage license, Steve Hyatt and Theresa Hyatt were met with comments about “trying it again”. True, they shared the same last name, and both were natives of New YorkSteve from Long Island, and Theresa from up-state Rochester- but they were not related, and they had never been married to each other! Their hometown love story began when Steve and Theresa met while working together at Pall Aeropower in 1989. They dated for awhile, but they went their separate ways for seven years until fate stepped in and reconnected them in 1996. “If we could do it over again,” Theresa confessed, “we would have married the first time around instead of going in different directions for seven years.” Steve & Theresa officially became Mr. & Mrs. Hyatt in August 1996, and they blended their families to include three beautiful daughters, Rebecca, April, & Stephanie. Unfortunately, Stephanie succumbed to fatal injuries sustained in a tragic auto accident in 2001. www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com
Steve & Theresa put countless hours into their store, but they also make time for each other, their family, friends and community. They are both active members of the West Pasco and Trinity Odessa Chambers of Commerce, the latter of which, for several months, maintained a temporary office within The Better Back Store at 4018 Little Road in New Port Richey. The Hyatts regularly participate in area events and charitable fundraisers. They recently established The Better Back Store as a drop-off location for gently used shoes, in an effort to benefit those less fortunate, as well as helping the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. When Steve & Theresa are not “doing good things behind your back,” they enjoy spoiling their three beautiful granddaughters, walking the beach at sunset, strolling in the park, riding motorcycles, boating & taking photographs. Often times you can see the quality of Steve’s snapshots among the pages of IT’S YOUR HOME Magazine. Compassionate, honest and sincere, Steve & Theresa exemplify what it means to be successful business owners, caring neighbors and good friends by the way they serve others and their West Pasco community! 7

Most air conditioning companies will offer a wide range of time when they will arrive to complete maintenance, or diagnose, examine, and repair issues. Not One Hour Air Conditioning. Their mantra is “always on time or you don’t pay a dime,” and they guarantee it, or your repair is FREE!

That’s the kind of air conditioning business Ed O’Kelley, and his daughter and son, Kim and Corey, envisioned for their friends and neighbors in West Tampa Bay. Kim began a new job with a One Hour Air franchise in 2008, and she told her father about it. His daughter’s enthusiasm for her new job became contagious and Ed made the decision to invest in a franchise, himself! Ed had worked as an electrical engineer, Corey had experience in sales, and Kim had earned her degree in communications. They brought all of their skills and talents to their new business venture in 2009: Ed specializes in design and troubleshoots difficult problems, Corey serves as General Manager, and Kim handles all administrative duties, accounting and marketing. The O’Kelleys have taken their passion for helping people to include helping people with A/C problems,

Voted the Tarpon Springs Business of the Year in 2012, One Hour Air not only takes care of their employees, but, most importantly, they skillfully take care of their customers’ HVAC needs. Additionally, they regularly post rebates and specials on their website to further increase the value and affordability for their customers. Mark M., of New Port Richey took the time to write this testimonial: “Okay folks LOOK....I know it is hard to trust ANYONE these days. Everyone wants to make a buck and a lot of these A/C companies will try to do ANYTHING they can to steal a ton from ya. BUT THEN THERE IS ONE HOUR… and lemme tell you, from start to finish, these guys are GREAT! This is without a doubt the most HONEST and TRUSTWORTHY company I have come in contact with for a long time. TRUST them and USE them. PERIOD.” Kim assures, “We are always on time, and that’s a promise! If we’re even one minute late, the repair is free. We offer 100% satisfaction for all customers. Our employees’ backgrounds are checked before they are hired, and our written guarantee promises customers will never be disrespected or subjected to cursing or inappropriate behavior.” Visit their website for information: www.onehourairwestpasco.com

Neck Pain Solutions while Traveling The summer season typically entails stay-cations and vacations before the kiddos head back to school. Whether you take a road trip in the family van, or an airline adventure abroad, neck pain is an unwelcome damper on an otherwise good time. There are numerous pillows and supports available at The Better Back Store to deter neck pain and make the actual traveling to your destination a more pleasant experience. Core makes a u-shaped neck support cushion using viscoelastic memory foam that offers comfort and promotes proper spinal alignment, both of which can be difficult to achieve no matter the vehicle. TEMPUR-PEDIC also makes a travel size of their popular neck pillow and all-purpose rolls to support and protect the lower & middle back.
14 Summer Issue 2014
The Gusto Travel U-Pillow is an inflatable neck pillow with an asymmetrical shape, providing unparalleled comfort for necks of all sizes. This pillow easily inflates or deflates to adjust firmness, and it features an adjustable closure with a cord lock to keep your head upright. The unique shape allows you to flip and/or swivel the pillow around your neck until you find your own personal comfort zone.

with Your Primary Care Say “so long” to extended wait times to see a doctor. “Adios” to the care extenders or nurse practitioners who perform histories, exams and recommendations in place of the doctor. The days of oldfashioned medical care have returned to West Pasco!
Dr. Richard M. Smith
Dr. Richard M. Smith proudly announces the opening of his cash medical practice, Your Primary Care, because he sees an incredible need to get back to the basics, extending a better healthcare option to the residents of Trinity. “Our mission is to make the office visit as convenient and personal as humanly possible. Modern medicine has gotten away from the personal touch,” according to Dr. Smith, who was trained in family practice at Columbia University. Thanks to the “Affordable Care Act,” many things are changing in the world of healthcare. Patients are finding doctor’s visits anything but affordable. Patients are experiencing challenges in finding a physician to treat them, and physicians are joining multi-specialty practices or leaving medicine all together, because they cannot afford to pay their overhead expenses and their staff. It is projected that as many as 50,000 doctors will leave medicine over the course of the next ten years, which will negatively impact the level of healthcare patients receive. Dr. Smith’s practice focuses on non- critical care issues, school, sports, and DOT physicals, as well as cosmetic Botox treatments. Patients will see Dr. Smith at their scheduled appointment time for a consultation and exam. He will decide as to the course of treatment, and if he deems X-rays, labs or additional tests necessary, the patient will be referred to an independent outpatient facility, where they can use their insurance. Dr. Smith wants his patients to know that what they pay in his office is the true value of the treatment given. All costs are explained up front, which alleviates stress, anxiety and a heavy financial burden. Dr. Smith explained, “I am dedicated and passionate about providing a convenient and smooth process whereby the average patient can get treatment on time and feel that he/she has gotten what they paid for. When I was growing up, the family physician was a warm and caring individual who truly listened to what the patient needed. My goal is to bring some of that back to the medical field. I don’t want the patients to feel that I spend more time on the paperwork than I do with them.” Your Primary Care is located at 2330 Seven Springs Blvd, in an office of the Massage Therapy Center of Florida. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Smith, call 727-376-1363. This office does NOT dispense any controlled substances.

Summertime Fun Growing up in Kentucky, I vividly remember my Dad’s welcomed summer vacation time as great opportunities for family trips and outings. For several summers, my family road-tripped to Myrtle Beach, SC, and we stayed at the Kingfisher Inn each year. Along the journey, we listened to David Alan Cole’s “Wasn’t that a Party?” on a cassette recording repeatedly. We knew all the words, and the whole family would sing it together over and over, laughing out loud to the funniest verse in the song! Once we arrived and went to the beach, I flirted incessantly with the handsome lifeguard, which only resulted in sun poisoning for me, and my wearing a longsleeved white oxford shirt to cover my lobster-red arms! We ate fresh seafood and spent quality time together as a family.
Good times… Sometimes my parents opted for a stay-cation in Kentucky. We’d take our camper and fishing poles to
Taylor Made to a Tee By Debra Taylor Tee
a lake or campsite a nominal distance away, and we would spend time fishing, grilling out, enjoying nature and appreciating the beauty of our world! We were sans television, technology, and “that damned ringing phone,” as Dad would say. (He was a telephone man, so it unnerved him more than most!)
Good times… Today, life is crazy busy for most everyone! I look forward to vacations, but I’ll never again experience those wonderful days shared with my entire immediate family. My Dad passed away in 2004, and my brother in 2007. My little sister is an attorney now, and she has a family of her own. Mom stays busy baking and serving others, and she really doesn’t vacation anymore. I will always cherish those precious memories of our family vacations and stay-cations, and I am always grateful for quality time spent with my family members no matter what. Whether it’s a cookout at Mom’s, or we’re watching my nephews play a little league baseball game, I will continue to make new memories, never forgetting those irreplaceable good times!
Eat Pretty Coconut Fig Popsicles
Popsicles don’t quite count as cooking, do they? Which is fine because it’s hot and cooking is probably the last thing on the agenda anyways. Freezing, though— freezing is perfectly doable. Encouraged, even! And with the hydrating coconut milk in these popsicles, they could probably double as supercold face masks should you find yourself on a deserted island with nothing but premade, still-frozen treats.

Method Combine all ingredients except for the figs in a large bowl and whisk to combine. Place fig slices into the popsicle molds and press against the sides. Pour the mix into the molds and freeze. If you don’t have popsicle molds, paper cups work well too.

Makes 6 popsicles.
-2 cups coconut milk -1/2 cup honey -1/2 vanilla bean, scraped -pinch of salt -4 fresh figs, thinly sliced

Home LIVING
Designers across America and abroad have expressed their adoration and/or disdain regarding many home decorating trends in 2014. When researching a consensus of the positive comments regarding specific styles, several were mentioned by one or all as some of the best home décor choices in 2014. Sing the blues! Blue is a favorite color to many, but makes a statement all its own. Navy, sapphire, azure and cobalt and turquoise are simply a few shades to show contemporary style. Not so black & white! Plain white and beige walls are out. Grays are in. Use softer black and white accents to make a classic beauty statement. Not your Grandma’s window treatment! Linen & wool sheers can be purchased in a variety of colors to match or compliment your color scheme. Plus, they allow more natural light to flood any room, without compromising privacy. Macramé magnificence! A trend from the 70’s, macramé is making a marvelous comeback in 2014, adding retro flair, texture and style to walls and furniture. Strike a cord! Corduroy takes the place of velvet or chenille when it comes to upholstery and pillows, and easily adds a touch of class to your living room or bedroom.

Capturing special moments and memories throughout West Tampa Bay, J. David Wright regularly brings his talented photographic eye, along with his trusty camera to community events and commemorations throughout Pasco & Pinellas counties. “I love photographing people at a moment in their life that will be preserved for them. You are giving them the gift of a memory,” Dave explains. J. David wright was born in Elfers and raised in St. Petersburg, so his extensive knowledge of and involvement in his home community allows him various forums to share his focused perspective via Photos by J. Community Service Council for the work they do serving and encouraging others. He is also active in both the West Pasco and Tarpon Springs Chambers of Commerce, which keep him ”connected with the community.”
Formerly a manager with Winn Dixie stores in St. Petersburg and Holiday, Dave became involved with Primerica Financial Services in 1980, and he moved to Baltimore, MD, to open new offices. After surviving a dozen brutally cold winters of the midEastern coast, Dave returned to his home in Florida in 1995. He continues advising with Primerica, but channels a great deal of time, energy and love into his passion for photography.
Wheelchairs 4Kids is an organization that means a great deal to Dave, as well. He began working with the non-profit four years ago. As the name implies, this group provides wheelchairs for children in need due to health conditions or devastating accidents.
“I have been very fortunate to have two careers that I love and feel very passionate about. Both of these careers allow me to involve my family in what I do,” something very important to Dave. He and his lovely wife, Mary Lou, have been married for 27 years. They each have one son, and they adore their two beautiful grandchildren. Dave is proud to be involved in the Rotary Club and

Dave said, “I love to see the good in people, of all of the volunteer work done by the people of this area. The best people in the world are people who have an attitude of gratitude and make a positive impact in the community. It is fun and inspiring to be around those kinds of people.” Our West Tampa Bay community is made even more special thanks to Dave’s generosity of time, talent and beautiful moments captured through his amazing photographs. Many thanks, J. David Wright!

You probably didn’t notice, but when the clock struck midnight on December 31, 2013, a number of popular tax benefits, commonly included in the list of provisions referred to as “tax extenders” expired. While it’s possible that Congress could retroactively extend some or all of these items, you’ll have to evaluate your 2014 tax situation based on the fact that they’re no longer available. Call our tax team to do so. Initial appointments are complimentary. 1. Energy efficient home improvements and property The non-business energy property credit offset some of the costs associated with the installation of energy efficient qualified home improvements (e.g., insulation, windows) and qualified residential energy property (e.g., water heater, central air). Specific qualifications and limits applied, and an overall lifetime cap of $500 was in effect for 2013. The credit is not available at all in 2014. 2. Discharge of debt on principal residence Since 2007, individuals have generally been allowed to exclude from income amounts resulting from the forgiveness of debt on their principal residence. This provision expired at the end of 2013. 3. Deduction for higher education expenses The above-the-line deduction for qualifying tuition and related expenses that you pay for yourself, your spouse, or a dependent is not available for 2014. 4. Classroom educator expense deduction The above-the-line deduction for up to $250 of unreimbursed out-of-
www.ItsYourHomeMagazine.com
pocket classroom expenses paid by qualified education professionals also expired at the end of 2013. 5. State and local sales tax deduction If you itemize deductions for the 2014 tax year, you won’t have the option of claiming a deduction for state and local sales tax in lieu of the deduction for state and local income tax. 6. Depreciation and expense limits The maximum amount that can be expensed under Internal Revenue Code Section 179 drops significantly from its 2013 level of $500,000 to $25,000 for 2014. The special 50% “bonus” first year additional depreciation deduction has also ended. 7. Mortgage insurance premiums Starting in 2014, individuals who itemize deductions will no longer have the ability to treat premiums paid for qualified mortgage insurance as deductible interest on IRS Form 1040, Schedule A. Note: This is mortgage insurance NOT mortgage interest, which is still deductible.

a great guest, and we had lots of fun finding out what’s happening around town!
My Chamber TV continues to soar with success as guests join us for a relaxed, informative interview on what’s happening around the Tampa Bay Area!
One of the commonalities I’ve noticed with the guests is that they all say the same thing about getting involved with your community. It is amazing how connected and bonded many business owners become with community residents! The passion each Chamber member encompasses is a driving force to their success!
The show airs live and goes from “live-to-tape” to be archived on www. mychambertv.com, where the entire production can be reviewed and reposted for new guests to get a feel for the flow of the show. With no TV experience, our guests find themselves in a comfortable atmosphere in which to share their views as a Chamber member and as a business owner, offering a forum for introducing charitable organizations and announcing special events. Recently, My Chamber TV went into the Trinity community to capture some candid interviews at Fiddlers Green, and then to Innisbrook in Palm Harbor where seven Chambers of Commerce and many business owners participated in a spectacular networking event! As one of our special V.I.P. guests, the publisher of IT’S YOUR

Business & FINANCE The “Original” Business Networking Group of Trinity Trinity Business Association Hosts Trinity’s Largest Office Party Trinity Business Association (TBA) was founded on the premise that by simultaneously building business relationships and friendships within the West Pasco community, a successful business environment and a stronger, more stable local economy can be created. Each member is dedicated to working together to grow their individual businesses through referrals, as well as supporting and promoting one another. Supporting each other in business and in life is not all that TBA members are about. TBA established a Charitable Events Committee to oversee different programs allowing them to give back to their beloved community. TBA supports The RAP House; a local shelter designated for youth ages 10 - 17. The children reside or visit the shelter for various reasons. Some are runaways, and some have been abandoned or abused. Still others just need time away from a tumultuous home environment. TBA also established a scholarship program which awards many scholarships each year to qualifying local graduating high school seniors and/or home-schooled candidates who have been accepted to attend an accredited trade or business school, community college, or fouryear college or university. “This is yet another way that Trinity Business Association gives back by investing in our future business and community leaders”, says President Eric Anderson. Tickets are now on sale to win a cruise for two, the proceeds will go towards the scholarship program. To raise money for this important scholarships program, all community groups and organizations are invited to attend TBA’s upcoming event: “Trinity’s Largest Office Party”, Friday, September 12th, from 5 - 8 PM, at Seven Springs Golf & Country Club, 3535 Trophy Blvd, Trinity. Join TBA members for happy hour, hors d’oeuvres, photos at the copy machine and gossip at the water cooler! Tickets are only $10 in advance, or $15 at the door. Once a month on a Saturday morning at 10:00AM, a crowd embarks to a parking lot in West Pasco County. Together, Debbie Dawson, RE/MAX Realtor and Publisher of It’s Your Home Magazine and Valerie Wilson, RE/MAX Realtor, announce the name of the business that is about to be “HIT”. Within minutes, dozens of friends & neighbors from our community crash a local Mom & Pop business where everyone shops! This group has increased sales from $450 to over $2,000 in less than 30 minutes not including the additional revenue that is spent at a nearby local restaurant. Business owners are shocked as this group of eager customers enter their store each armed with a $10 bill. Debbie and Valerie both say, “We love to watch the smiles and happy tears flow on the faces of the surprised business owners. What a great feeling as we leave. Some shops do more in 30 minutes than they do in a month.” The “mob” then retreats to a nearby restaurant, to enjoy networking and a tasty lunch. Votes are taken for the next Mom & Pop business to “HIT” in the West Pasco area. You can find more information on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CashMobOfWestPasco.

A Twist on the American Dream
Penguin Pretzel Factory
Nick & Suzy, owners of Penguin Pretzel Factory comically quip, “We’re twisted, and we know it!” They’re not really twisted. They are an all-American family living the American dream, which was ultimately inspired by a dream. Nick spent a great deal of time traveling with his former job, and his wife and children would travel with him whenever possible. It wasn’t long before that lifestyle became exhausting and expensive. Suzy and Nick wanted to do something in their community, so they could spend more time together as a family, everyone being involved, and all while earning a decent living. Suzy woke up one morning thinking, “Pretzels.” She concocted recipe after recipe and baked pretzel after pretzel. Finally, the recipe she created resulted in the perfect pretzel! Suzy yelled to her husband as he walked through the door, “I did it! I did it! Taste this!” He did, and he loved it! She encouraged him to go sell their pretzels to the theme parks, and that is exactly what he did. Nick first sold Suzy’s perfect pretzels to MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry). Then Busch Gardens was interested in having pretzels at their festivals. Nick captured wholesale business from hospitals and amusement parks. Their soft baked pretzels were a hit! Customers continually encouraged them to open a shop locally, so Nick & Suzy’s scrumptious pretzels could be purchased on a regular basis. That’s what eventually led them to open a storefront in New Port Richey. To embark upon such a business venture in the food and beverage industry required they always provide a quality product using fresh ingredients, expand the varietal pretzel options available, and bake their pretzels fresh all day every day to maintain their status as the top-rated soft baked pretzel business in Florida, as well as the #1 restaurant biz on TripAdvisor! Suzy started by developing six primary “twists”: salted, unsalted, everything, cinnamon, gar-

lic and onion, to which dipping sauces added the perfect accompaniment. On the day before they opened their new shop, she awakened with yet another brilliant idea, “I’m going to stuff the pretzels, too!” Suzy did not hesitate to run out and purchase cheeses, bacon, chicken, spinach, and pepperoni, which she used to create their very own, half-pound pretzel sandwiches, each named in honor of penguins! The Emperor is a Greek classic stuffed with chopped spinach, scallions, feta, and spices. The King combines sliced Boars Head® chicken, strips of bacon, white American cheese, and ranch dressing. The Royal appeals to pizza lovers who enjoy pepperoni, mozzarella cheese and Italian spices. The extensive sandwich selection at Penguin Pretzel Factory has a flavor to suit any palate. Craving something sweet? Nick & Suzy can satisfy the sweet tooth with pretzels stuffed with Ghirardelli dark chocolate, cherry, apple, white chocolate, peanut butter chocolate, strawberry chocolate and more! Suzy said, “Customer service is of the utmost importance to Nick and me. Yes, our food is terrific, but we actually CARE for our customers. We want to get to know them, so they feel like they are coming into our home when they enter our shop! We are blessed and thankful they visit!” Nick only wonders what Suzy will dream up next!

Born in the Mississippi Delta in 1940, Dr. Jane Bennett Gaddy has penned four novels depicting the Old South during and after the Civil War featuring tales based on the poignant account of her family, as first told by her grandmother, Vallie Georgia Clark Smith of Sarepta, MS. “The words of (my) grandmother took root long after she died and long before (I) wrote the stories,” Dr. Gaddy explained. Her great-great grandfather, Captain Thomas Goode (T.G.) Clark and his two sons were killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. They had sent letters home describing their participation in the war to Dr. Gaddy’s great-great grandmother, Margery Brown Rogers Clark (Rachel Payne in her novels). Having those letters to study and reference, Dr. Gaddy combined her family’s reality with imagination to tell magnificent stories featuring characters who actually lived and loved and were disheartened by the War and its aftermath. Her fictional novels are based on truth, and offers a descriptive account of the rebuilding of the Old South, and the healing of its people. The heart-warming stories Dr. Gaddy has created as a daughter of the South are a direct reflection of her own personal heritage and capture the intricate details of a pivotal point in our country’s history. Her latest novel, Rachel, After the Darkness, published in June, explores Rachel’s move to the big city as the South recovers after the war. Rachel leaves her home for a temporary job as an editorial writer for a newspaper in New York, where she experiences great love and sometimes, violent opposition to her controversial southern views. Dr. Gaddy’s four other books include her memoir in 2007; The Mississippi Boys in 2008; Isaac’s House in 2011;and JOAB in 2013. She co-authored GIBBO—In My Life, and she has edited and assisted in publishing several manuscripts. She also ghostwrites monthly articles for the religion section of the Birmingham Times.
