Eurocode 5 & CE marking From March 2010 Eurocode 5 (EN 1995-11:2004 Design of timber structures) comes into force, making significant changes to the way that calculations are made and components chosen. In some cases this will significantly change some design decisions. ITW Industry is working hard to ensure that all fasteners meet the requirements of the new rules. Eurocode 5 is one of ten Eurocodes aimed at harmonising the standards for all construction products across Europe, simplifying the choice between competing products and opening up the market, encouraging the spread of knowledge and best practice. It also sets minimum acceptable performance criteria. The objective of Eurocode 5 is that all construction products will be CE marked to show that they are safe and fit for purpose in terms of; Mechanical resistance and stability Safety in case of fire Hygiene, health and the environment Safety in use Protection against noise Energy economy and heat retention The CE mark will supercede national standards. Whilst a deadline of March 2010 has been set, Eurocode is essentially an ongoing process which will be implemented as the component European standards and ETAGs (European Technical Approval Guidelines) are agreed. Several standards or ETAGs affect roof truss and open web joist design, including; EN14545 2D nailing plates ETAG 015 3D connectors

ETAG 011 Light composite wood based beams and

columns ETAG 007 Timber frame building kits ETAG 001 Metal anchors for use in concrete (where

fixing sole plates or wall plates to masonry structures The detail of these is all subsidiary to the calculation and performance criteria of Eurocode 5 and the permitted variations of the National Annex. In particular 3 Service Classes cover the variety of conditions to which building components are exposed; Service Class 1 = Internal fixings and fasteners, protected from cold and damp. Service Class 2 = Fixing of sheathing, battens etc… which are outside the thermal insulation, but not directly exposed to weather Service Class 3 = Exposed directly to weather These service classes essentially deal with the moisture contained within the timber and additional consideration needs to be made of the local environment (see page 9). It is fundamental to Eurocode 5 that the minimum design life of most buildings is 50 years and this should always be born in mind by the engineer. ETAG 011 covers the design and manufacture of ‘Light composite wood-based beams and columns’. These products are not covered by specific Euro Norm standards but can be CE marked by obtaining an ETA (European Technical Approval). The ETAG generally uses a mixture of design and testing to substantiate the values that should be used for the product. The evaluation of the product is done by a Notified Body who then applies to EOTA for the issue of the ETA (for example, ITW’s Spacejoist was evaluated by BM TRADA with TRADA Technology carrying out the physical testing).

Alpine VIEW and hsbCAD link ITW Industry offer a whole house design, detailing and engineering solution for timber frame manufacturers incorporating Alpine VIEW and hsbCAD software. This dynamic software link enables fast, accurate design turnaround with huge flexibility and control.

Bridging the gap The day to day problems caused by the disconnection between the roof truss / floor joist designers and timber frame designers has long been accepted. Not content with this situation, hsbCAD and Alpine have embarked upon the task of bridging the gap. Following thorough consultation with users of both software products, it was concluded that the first step towards integration between roof truss / floor joist and timber frame design is to enable the ability to share the same input of walls, structural members and roof planes. As a result of the hsbCAD / Alpine VIEW link, communication between the roof truss / floor joist designer is enhanced. The elimination of the double handling of data speeds up design turnaround and reduces the possibility of errors. Ultimately the synergy between designers and manufacturers leads better designs, more accurate documents and better homes. The gap bridged Whether at the early stages of truss quotation or creating a client approval drawing, the link enables the automatic transfer data between hsbCAD and Alpine VIEW.

ALPINE | ROOF TRUSS & FLOOR JOIST SYSTEMS

16/17

When a quotation for a roof truss or floor joist layout is completed, all of the wall, floor and roof data within the Alpine VIEW software can be easily imported into hsbCAD. This eliminates the requirement for the timber frame designer to re-input the walls and resolve roof planes, and the possibility of inaccuracies. Any changes required for the overall structure can be easily and quickly communicated back to the VIEW model and engineered as required while updating the hsbCAD model. On the other side of the equation, once the architectural model is completed in hsbCAD, all wall, structural beam and roof data can be exported directly to Alpine VIEW. This allows the roof truss / floor joist designer to concentrate on the specific task of engineering the roofs and floors. Once the roof and floor analysis is complete, all the engineering data can be exported directly back to hsbCAD to complete the 3D model. The complete 3D model now contains every engineered roof truss / floor joist component, each with details on their plates and reactions. The reactions are shown on the hsbCAD model, allowing the timber frame designer to make informed decisions when dealing with any point loads. In addition, information on other components such as loose infill, bracing, gable ladders and metalwork are contained within the 3D model.

Further to the transfer of the architectural aspect and engineered components, the hsbCAD / Alpine link also allows the transfer of completely detailed cut roofs, as well as loose and cassette floors. The hsbCAD / Alpine link takes advantage of the most powerful traditional roof and cassette floor detailing tools on the market by allowing the user to detail complete roofs and floors within hsbCAD before exporting directly to VIEW for engineering. If required, further adjustments to individual components can be carried out within VIEW, then exported directly back to the hsbCAD 3D model. Summary of benefits Productivity – unnecessary repetition is eliminated as walls and roof planes are only inputted once. Flexibility – users can work in either system with the same data. Creditability – hsbCAD and Alpine are in a position to continue with commitment to software development. Accuracy – eliminating double handling removes the possibility of inaccuracies between the timber frame, roof truss and floor joist models. Current Alpine users can promote their business to third party hsbCAD clients offering the benefit of major savings with reduced design times. hsbCAD clients could link into any Alpine fabricator, reducing potential delivery costs.

Roof truss overview Alpine roof trusses are designed and manufactured by fabricators utilising the Alpine integrated system. A major component of this system is the powerful VIEW software package for designing, estimating, costing, quoting, detailing and cutting of roof trusses. ITW Industry can supply an extensive range of machinery for roof truss manufacture from manual to CNC saws, presses, jigging and materials handling equipment.

Trussed rafters are today's preferred choice of roof construction for domestic housing and are increasingly favoured for commercial & industrial developments such as offices, shops, hotels and leisure centres. The popularity of trussed rafters is in part thanks to their compatibility with a variety of construction methods including timber frame, masonry and steel frame. Furthermore, strict design and fabrication standards ensure that Alpine trussed rafters are consistently highlyengineered. They also benefit from superior flexibility and cost effectiveness over many other methods of roof construction. The timber construction of trussed rafters is ideal for the environmentally conscious as timber the only truly renewable building resource. Timber construction also benefits from higher thermal efficiency than alternative materials such as aluminium, steel, or concrete.

Roof truss nailplate ITW manufactures and distributes nailplate for roof truss manufacture. All Alpine nailplate can be pressed using any of the normally available truss manufacturing equipment.

A9 / A13 Plates ITW Industry offers 0.9mm thick A9 nailplates for general roof truss fabrication which typically fastens 90% of joints. 1.25mm thick A13 nailplates fixes the remaining 10%. Nailplate sizes are selected by the Alpine VIEW software following engineering analysis for the most efficient solution. Field Splice Plates Available in three sizes, Field Splice Plates (pictured) are used to connect a top hat truss to it’s base truss. These plates are part punched nails which are pressed into the base truss at the factory, and part holes to allow for nailing into the top hat truss on site with conventional hammer and nails, or with a powered positive placement nailer such as ITW Industry’s PPN35i.

Open web joist overview ITW Industry offers the broadest range of engineered open web joists on the market, each with many benefits over conventional solid timber or I-joists.

FloorTrus FloorTrus is a timber open web joist system for floor and roof applications, fixed with nailplate in a similar way to roof trusses. This type of construction is market leader in the US (known as System 42) and is now becoming more widely used by pioneering manufacturers in the UK and Irish market thanks to it’s design flexibility, time saving features and environmental attributes.

The SpaceJoist open web joist system for floor and roof applications, comprising of timber chords with steel “V” webs and timber vertical webs. With the combination of the best features of an I-joist together with an open web construction, SpaceJoist delivers a quality product for maximum job site efficiency and overall cost effectiveness.

TrimTrus In addition to the FloorTrus system, ITW Industry also supports a pre-engineered trimmable timber open web floor system called “TrimTrus” - available in depths of 219 & 254mm and spans up to 5400mm.

FloorTrus The FloorTrus timber open web joist system has grown in popularity partly due to its unrivalled deisign flexibility. FloorTrus can be manufactured to ANY depth from 219 to 600mm allowing for direct replacement in existing building designs. Chases can be easily incorporated to allow for large services such as air handling units and ducting. With FloorTrus’ ability to clear-span wide areas, there is less need for intermediate load bearing walls or post and beam requirements. This premium floor solution provides improved resistance to dynamic loading (less “bounce”) and transmission of sound, so “it feels like a much firmer floor." Joist shrinkage and twisting which cause cracked ceilings and squeaky floors are a thing of the past. Precision controlled manufacturing techniques ensures consistently even floors and ceilings. Once the joists are on the site, the builder can really start to see the benefits. The consistent size and height of the off-site manufactured FloorTrus allows easier floor deck & ceiling installation, while the open web design allows for utilities to be run through the floor system without drilling or notching. These benefits reduce the amount of time trade contractors spend on site, speed up construction, and ultimately save the builder money. Waveplate, the only nailplate of its type, is used specifically for FloorTrus. Its high anchorage values (required due to limited timber area) keeps sizes down, therefore cost and environmental impact is kept to a minimum.
