Occupied Spatial Unit (OSU) is an abstract spatial construction that can be occupied and/or activated by people moving through it or pausing within it. SOUTH CENTRAL FARM A series of site analysis, design, and plant application in a low-income community.
ASSET MAPPING + ANALYSIS OF SITE/CONTEXT Community Assets are the collective resources that individuals and communities have at their disposal; those which can be developed as effective solutions to promote social inclusion and improve the health and well-being of people. Assets include organizations, associations, and individuals. Strong, safe, and healthy communities are built on the needs and capacities of their residents and associations that call the community home. The most powerful question we can ask is What can we do with what we already have to get what we need? Through mapping and analysis, beneficiaries and people united can unlock resources for developing equitable community place making. The farm is a community core.

The South Central Los Angeles community is one with considerable resilience, as they’re able to maintain a strong sense of unity no matter the differences between families. The area has a solid set of resources to provide struggling residents with basic needs; however, there is still room for the expansion of these resource networks.

PIECES + PARTS +PLANTING + PROGRAM This second project of the studio is designed to explore plants, their qualities, their performance, and the results of their combinations to achieve a desired functional outcome. The project applies foundational programs (functions) that typically drive the use of plants to test planting ideas applied to typical pieces and parts of the urban landscape. These numerous and unique combinations will demonstrate the opportunities for a

PROJECT THREE: THE APPLIED SITE Students are expected to apply all previous research and lesson of project phases from fall and spring to the design development. The research, stories, connections, and lessons learned must be applied to the specific project site context and location. Solutions presented must specifically address the challenges facing South Central Farms. The focus of this work is to make clear the distribution, organization, and form of major programs and project elements as they are informed by the connections context research, and analysis. Visual style should also be considered as it relates to the design concept.
Planting Area: serves as a spade to learn about growing and planting as well and a place for the community to come and get fresh produce.
Multipurpose Space: A 3-in-1 area, people can come to cook, learn to cook, get meals, lounge, and study when one might not have a place to do so.
Grass/Table Space: A place to gather, and form a community within a community. This space allows for either sitting at tables or occupying th space by sitting on the grass taking it all in.

medicinal properties through sensory engagement. With sight there is a world of color to take in looking at this palette with almost every color included within the plantings, these vibrant colors correlate with the healing aspect of our focus,. Smell can be found in a handful of our selections, the lavender, Daphne plant, fore connecting to healing. Touch takes place with the California meadow sedge, allowing people to take a seat, or lay down and forget about real life for a bit. For the rest of our palette taste, and smell take over the whole medicinal aspect, with herbs and aloe that have a range of medicinal uses.

PLANTING TWO WAYS This project challenges designers to advance their Applied Site Design project through carefully considered planting design. The approach to planting must be grounded in the community, responsive to context, express the site-specific fixed and flexible programs, and advance the project concept. The Planting Designs are executed in the following 2 ways: 1. Entirely Edible: all plant material must be edible- must literally feed and sustain the community. 2. Concept Forward: all plant materials selected to amplify the Applied Site Design concept

leaving people wanting to know more about it. Comfort is seen in the plants that were also used at the original farm, allowing for a connection between our site and the original South Central Farm. Visual engagement and comfort are both seen through the planting palette alone, again tying the two sites together and integrated color for visual excitement when just looking at the palette.
