Islands are usually problematized for being confined, isolated and connected at the same time. This geographical particularity gained significance in Djerba throughout history. It was merged with the unique characteristics, culture and lifestyle of the inhabitants of the the island through time. This catalogue aims to provide an analytical brief of the island based on our research, experience and personal observations within a limited timeframe. The course of action included visits to different sites in Djerba as well as the exploration of empty landscapes, seascape, and spaces that stand in between. This conglomeration between a distinctive urban heritage and emerging developments, desert and sea, blue and white became for us, a motive to explore the reasons behind this uniqueness and consequently, question the future of the island. With an emphasis on visual demonstrations, collages and illustrations, the catalogue portrays some of the interesting urban aspects spotted on the island. Starting with a general overview, the document tries to explain the historical and geographical reasons behind the particularity of the island. Subsequently, the apprehension of ‘dichotomy’ is being introduced to portray the island in contrast. This approach helps to shed light not only on the extreme cases but, to question the in-between state of matters. This approach is then being hard-pressed to the extreme in order to provoke the reader and raise awareness during the process of negotiating the future. 7

متهيـــــد
غالبــاً مــا تواجــه الجــزر إشــكالية كونهــا محصــورة ومعزولــة ويف نفــس الوقــت كونهــا متصلــة مــع مــا حولهــا .وقــد شــكلت هــذه امليــزة الجغرافيــة أهميــة كبــرة يف تطــور جزيــرة جربــة؛ حيــث امتزجــت املميــزات الفريــدة بالجزيــرة لتشــكل منــط خــاص للحيــاة والثقافــة بســكان الجزيــرة عــر العصــور .يهــدف هــذا الكتالــوج تقديــم موجــز تحليــي للجزيــرة اعتــادا ً عــى املشــاهدات واملالحظــات التــي رصدهــا فريــق البحــث خــال الفــرة املحــددة للبحــث امليــداين عــى الجزيــرة .واشــتمل مســار العمــل زيــارات ملواقــع متنوعــة بالجزيــرة باإلضافــة الستكشــاف املناطــق الطبيعيــة والســاحلية غــر املأهولــة واملواقــع البينيــة. وقــد شــكل االختــاط بــن ال ـراث العم ـراين املميــز وبــن التطــور العم ـراين الحديــث ٬وامت ـزاج الصح ـراء والبحــر مــع اللونــن األزرق واألبيــض؛ شــكل كل ذلــك دافعـاً لفريــق البحــث ملحاولــة ســر غــور خصوصيــة هــذه الجزيــرة ،ومــن ثــم التســاؤل حــول مســتقبلها. يرصــد هــذا الكتالــوج بعــض التجليــات الحرضيــة املثــرة لالهتــام مــن خــال الصــور البرصيــة والرســومات التوضيحية .يبــدأ الكتالوج بنظــرة عامــة عــن الجزيــرة كمحاولــة لفهــم األبعــاد التاريخيــة والجغرافيــة التــي منحــت الجزيــرة خصوصيتهــا .بعدهــا ٬يتــم تقديــم فكــره «الثنائيــات» كمدخــل لفهــم التباينــات عــى الجزيــرة٬ مــا يســهم يف تســليط الضــوء عــى الظواهر شــديدة التناقــض فضالً عــن طــرح تســاؤالت حــول األمــور البينيــة بالجزيــرة .ومــن ثم٬يتــم الدفــع مبدخــل «الثنائيــات» ألقــى حــد كطريقــة لرفــع وعــي القــارئ وتحفيــزه أثنــاء عمليــة التفــاوض حــول مســتقبل الجزيــرة.

Anatomy of the Island This part provides a general overview of the Tunisian island, Djerba. In the anatomy, we perceived the island as a living organ. Floating between land and sea, the island gained its particularity through its location, context and solitude. This particularity played a major role in influencing those who has inhabited the island, which further explains the architectural, urban and spatial distribution of the island. This has been illustrated in different collages that tries to capture the soul of the island, its membrane (the shores), and its organs and flesh (the inland).

تــشــريـــــح الــجــزيــرة مينــح هــذا الجــزء مــن الكتالــوج نظــرة عامــة عــى جزيــرة جربــة التونســية؛ وذلــك مــن خــال التعامــل مــع الجزيــرة ككائــن حــي .ومــا بــن اليابــس والبحــر اكتســبت الجزيــرة خصوصيتهــا مــن خــال موقعهــا وعالقتهــا مبــا حولهــا .ولقــد لعبــت تلــك الخصوصيــة يف التأثــر عــى كل مــن ســكن الجزيــرة وهــذا مــا يفــر الطابــع املعــاري والعمــراين والتوزيــع املــكاين بالجزيــرة. وقــد اســتخدمت الرتكيبــات البرصيــة كمحاولــة اللتقــاط روح الجزيــرة املتمثلــة فيــك ل مــن غشــائها الخارجــي (الســواحل) واألعضــاء واألنســجة الداخليــة (الجزيــرة مــن الداخــل).

Djerba through Dichotomies Dichotomies are understood as a contrast between two matters that are represented as being opposed or entirely different. In this part, we utilized the notion of ‘dichotomies’ to highlight on interesting urban topics in Djerba Island. As we try to capture these phenomena at a certain time, we stress out on the idea that these dichotomies along with the captured phenomena continuously undergo a process of formation and change.

Problematizing Dichotomies Dichotomies help to illustrate concepts through oppositions and contrasts but, in reality is it possible to draw borders between these concepts? In the next part we push reality to the extreme. Through a set of collages, we try to question the urban future of the island and raise awareness amongst decision makers regarding their responsibility towards the development of the island. Original pictures are de-saturated while fictional additions are left colored.
