Worldwide
Resilience, Architecture & Building Technologies
- Under the threats of global warming and decreasing fossil energy resources resilience becomes a necessity - The energy change in Europe is part of a possible solution, but people have to pay a prize for it and, as a consequence, the issue of Energy Efficiency comes more into public discussion

MENA Region
Resilience, Architecture & Building Technologies
- MENA countries are under the pressure of a rapidly growing population and developing markets - Energy is still subsidized in most countries of the MENA region, often to a vast amount But: - Increasing world energy prizes let the subsidies become to costly for most state budgets - Energies prizes can not easily be raised without the danger to provoke unrest

Differences in MENA Countries
Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi
Resilience, Architecture & Building Technologies
- Situation in the MENA countries is different but an estimated 40-60 % of all prime energies are consumed in buildings - Resilience through energy efficient architecture and building technologies seems to be an attractive and practicable part of a solution - Saudi Arabia uses an estimated third of its oil production to satisfy domestic energy needs, a ratio which will rise to approximately 50 % by 2030 - Abu Dhabi uses more than half of its domestic energy consumption for water desalination source: Elgendy, K., Sustainability in the desert, Detail Green 2/2011

Jordan
- Jordan has no own energy fossil energy deposits and and is considered as one of the most water scarce countries in the world - Oil products in Jordan have reached the world market price Gas-cylinders for cooking and heating purposes remain subsidized - Jordan faces protests and demonstrations on rising energy prizes But, on the planning side, there seems to be no relevant mind change: - The city of Amman grows, kind of uncontrolled, into fertile lands to the west Amman West, view from the Airport Road

Jordan - Housing Sector - Building Routines Wall Mounting
Resilience, Architecture & Building Technologies
- The usual structure is a load bearing iron-concrete skeleton - The structure will be completed with cement hollow block stones, concrete and a natural stone cladding - There are building codes in the country now emphasizing on energy efficiency, demanding an insulation layer - A problem is the control of building codes, the higher initial costs for insulation material and a lack of professional knowledge on all sides - The insulation layer is interrupted by columns and slabs and thermal bridges are resulting - Possible thermal storage material is outside the insulation layer

Jordan - Housing Sector - Building Routines Openings
Resilience, Architecture & Building Technologies
- The majority of windows comes with single glazing and a simple hollow aluminium framing - Wooden boxes for roller shutters are not insulated - There are high transmission and ventilation heat losses or gains.

Jordan - Office and Commercial Buildings
Resilience, Architecture & Building Technologies
- Most office and commercial buildings in Amman widely use glass fronts or faรงades - Solar glass, which is mostly used, does not allow the use of passive solar energy, does not provide glare protection and diminishes the possible thermal storage mass of the building - Air-conditioning is a must

Egypt, Cairo
- Due to its population and income structure energy in Egypt is highly subsidized accounting for 43 billion EGP in the year 2007/2008 - Electricity demand is rising by 7% yearly - Energy supply is almost completely from fossil energies (more than 95%) But: - By 2020 Egypt wants cover 20% from renewable sources
[econetnorthafrica 2011]
- Over the last months until now Egypt experienced several energy and water shortages provoking resentment under its people, mainly the poor, who are mostly affected

Energy Efficiency
Resilience, Architecture & Building Technologies
- In Egypt an estimated 40-50% of all Prime Energies are used in buildings - Energy Efficiency creates financial relief for the state and decreases dependencies from the general energy market - Energy-Efficiency adds to the well-being of the people (especially the poor) and their greater independency from uncertain energy sources

Climate Considerations for Energy Efficiency
Resilience, Architecture & Building Technologies
- Most of the energies in buildings are used for heating or cooling (depending on the prevailing climate) and for lighting - For resilience (against unsafe and expensive energy supplies) and for the well-being of the people (resilience also against harsh climate conditions) we need: - A different and Climate Appropriate Planning And Building Routine away from energy considerations as an „adding“ after the construction is finished towards an integrated planning and technical solution practice - Decentralized solutions are better for resilience than a centralized energy supply (of course the „Desertec“ project as a solar energy provider is needed and in my eyes better than the nuclear power stations some countries in the region are opting for)
