This type of line was introduced about 70 years ago and soon gained favour because it was cheap and easy to make, but still had the important properties that made it useful for anglers. It also had an inherent stretch which many anglers found useful when playing big fish and reacting to any sudden lunges.
ʦʛʖʙʞʦʤʘʖʨʲ which line is best for you, it is wise to consider where and how the vast majority of your fishing is undertaken. If the venue that you are tackling is packed with weed or snags then you need a robust, strong line that is up to the harshness of the environment. We would recommend a line with a high diameter of around 0.38mm or higher, which will probably break at over 20lb, and will offer plenty of abrasionresistance. The downside of using this line is its thickness and wiry nature, which will reduce your ability to cast. For most standard fishing situations, a line of roughly 0.33mm diameter will be ideal. It will break at around 12lb or above and will be sufficiently userfriendly to allow you to cast reasonable distances. A line of that breaking strain is strong enough
for most of the open-water fishing in this country, but if you travel abroad then you may have to consider using a stronger line. To complicate matters further, we now have a host of new lines to consider, and these are copolymers, which at first glance appear to be the same as nylon. In fact, rather than being produced from a single polymer they are derived from a mixture, which tends to give them improved characteristics. They are often thinner, very abrasion-resistant for the diameter, have controlled

stretch, and have excellent knot strength. On the downside, they are still slightly more expensive than standard nylon lines. FLUOROCARBON If you listen to the hype, fluorocarbon reel lines are the must-have accessory, but like

anything else there are pros and cons to consider when using them. From a fishing point of view, this product has two main advantages. Firstly, it is very hard to see, thanks to the fact that it has a refractive light index very similar to water. Secondly, it sinks like a brick, making it useful for anglers because they can allow their lines to lie on the lakebed out of the way of moving fish. This type of reel line also has a number of other plus points in its favour, in that it doesn’t deteriorate as quickly as mono, is less affected by the sun, and has a lot less stretch than nylon. On the downside, fluorocarbon is expensive, and isn’t as easy to use as standard lines. It is very difficult to knot to its full potential, and choice of knot and ensuring that it is properly lubricated is essential. Its weight, diameter, and wiry nature also mean that it is not a brilliant casting line and many anglers don’t use it for this reason alone. The reality is that it does have a valid place in carp fishing, but there is a time and a place to use it to the best advantage.
