01. KAWAYAN RESIDENCE Type: Residential Location: Nasugbu, Batangas Designers: Ivan Juanson and Cefelo Manuel for Estudio Arkipelago The Kawayan Residence is a project located in a private seaside residential community in Nasugbu, Batangas. The clients particularly requested for a large elevated deck adjacent to a large living space to gather and host numerous guests. Moreover, as the project gazes towards a breathtaking panorama of the Western Batangas coastline, it was imperative the all its major living spaces would capture and orient itself towards this view. The result is a series of stacked volumes that creates a bridge along a sloping terrain towards the sea.

The project features several ‘casitas’ surrounding a large pool and garden connected by a continuous deck. The client wanted a project that opens itself to the environment but also values privacy for each of its users. Each unit features a large glass walls that take advantage of the scenery, but is also protected by a large sloping roof. In addition, the clever use of walls is used not only to create a visual sense of unity and connection among each ‘casita’, but also provides a sense of privacy and security for the users.

16 | A MARITIME NEIGHBORHOOD

A MARITIME NEIGHBORHOOD | 17

03. A MARITIME NEIGHBORHOOD Type: Mixed-Use Residential Location: Ubay Island, Bohol On October 15, 2013, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck central Bohol heavily affected four inner reef islands causing them to start experiencing major geological changes, where they now experience partial or complete inundation in normal high tides. This situation affects and potentially threatens to displace more than 2000 families to safer housing re-settlements inland. But despite this: Social factors can play a more significant role in a community’s decision [against] island abandonment.

In response, the Maritime Neighborhood was conceived as an integrated project combining housing with various support facilities into a single unified development that takes into consideration the constant flux in the environment. It is designed with upcoming technologies that prepare and protect occupants from climate change induced impacts, specifically sea level rise, tidal flooding, storm surges, and typhoons, primarily through its usage of telescopic pile mechanisms and BIPV active skin panels. The project aims to show a solution for building habitable developments above aquatic conditions that maintains a mindful awareness of the surrounding marine habitats.

18 | INTRODUCTION

UBAY ISLAND Ubay Island is among the four island communities in the municipality of Tubigon, Bohol. These inner reef islands are characterized as low-lying islands with maximum land elevations of about +2.0 meters above water level. The islands all have small land areas, minimal vegetation cover, narrow beaches, and an absence of any freshwater wells. Collectively, they are threatened by the following climate change impacts - sea level rise, tidal flooding, storm surges, and typhoons. Based on the current context of Ubay Island, the project was based on the following goals - to make the inhabitants’ built environment capable of protecting users from climate change impacts, to improve the living conditions of the inhabitant’s built environment, and to create a built environment that peacefully coexists and mutually benefits with the natural environment.

1. Identify Existing Zones on Site

2. General Block Massing

3. Reduce Total Footprint

4. Link at Two Zones

5. Introduce Aquatic-Based Platform

6. Introduce Reactive Skin System

20 | FIRST LEVEL

AQUATIC PLATFORM | 21

The aquatic-based platform features recreational pools. Recreational pools are meant to serve as social spaces. These replicate the flooded streets on current Ubay Island that residents enjoy socializing and playing in. Here they are able to come in contact with other residents as well as interact with the natural marine habitat.

4 | AQUATIC POOLS

22 | SECOND LEVEL

COMMUNITY GARDEN | 23

The elevated community garden provides the residents with open green spaces for socialization and recreation. Along the outer edges of the garden are dedicated spaces to grow produce that are safe from sea water conditions. In addition, the garden provides a space for composting to help in managing organic wastes.

24 | THIRD LEVEL

RESIDENCE | 25

Residential units greet occupants with views towards the natural marine environment. In addition, residential units feature translucent BIPV active louvers. These specialized louvers are integrated with photovoltaics to produce energy for the building. In addition, these may be configured to remain open or closed depending on the preferences of the users.

30 | THE NEW CUBAO EXPO

THE NEW CUBAO EXPO | 31

Type: Commercial Location: Cubao, Quezon City

Breathing New Life into the District of Cubao.

04. THE NEW CUBAO EXPO

Based on the needs and problems identified through conducted interviews and research, the main goal of the project was to determine a way to develop a project that generated more income for entrepreneurs and owners alike, sustain the existing creative community, support local designers, and in a macro lens, address the ongoing issue of urban decay of the commercial district. Through these needs, the resulting project proposes to develop a unique integrated development that puts local Philippine design on a bigger platform and participates in the growth of local designers in the heart of the commercial district. The proposed project, named “The New Cubao Expo”, has an optimal location as it is very strategic and accessible within the metro. The New Cubao Expo includes a new mix of facilities making it a one stop venue for dining, shopping, socialization, and creative incubation. The several programs are integrated together into a singular unified structure roofed under a landscape rooftop park. The main zones of the facility includes a food center, retail area, incubation and co-working space, people’s plaza, and community park. Through this project, it aims to house and support an evergrowing and lively design community.

32 | INTRODUCTION

CUBAO EXPO Cubao Expo, formerly known as Marikina Shoe Expo, was a commercial facility developed in 1972 initially to showcase the wares from Marikina City. In 1997, the industry weakened, and so vacant rental space became available in this building, which attracted the attention of designers, artists, and entrepeneurs looking for affordable spaces to rent. Currently, Cubao Expo functions as a commercial complex housing numerous independent and emerging local brands and artists, as well as restaurants and bars. As a commercial complex, it as become a platform for designers and artists to showcase and sell their works. Additionally, it has evolved into a creative hub where individuals may gather and socialize with others who share similar interests and cultures. This, however, shows how outdated the original building has become towards addressing its emerging users and their growing needs. The redevelopment of the New Cubao Expo converts the site into an integrated development featuring public space, food hall, retail spaces, and incubation and co-working spaces. It aims to support local designers and artists by fostering collaboration, innovation, and entrepeneurship. The project responds to the needs of the creative industry for creative work and business development through providing social venues, galleries, work spaces, and commercial spaces for socialization, collaboration, and creative work.

STRATEGY

Designating the major zones of the project was first determined. Next was to lift the mass to allow interaction to activate on the immediate ground level. The specific spaces for the dining, retail, and incubation spaces were then further defined at the two ends. And bridging these two zones together are a series of gallery spaces. Lastly, a rooftop park was placed atop to unify the structure.

A Model for the [Tropical] Office of the Future

05. ONE CIVIC CENTER

The building revolves around the three key concepts - balance, reconnection, and collaboration. Balance is key in the life of an office user. Providing immediately accessible leisure and wellness spaces allow the users to balance their work life with their social and physical lifestyles. Another goal is to reimagine what a skyscraper can be by assessing the existing issues of a high rise located in the tropics and by also introducing immediately accessible micro-environments to reconnect with nature. Lastly, collaboration is crucial as it fosters individual and group growth for the companies the building houses. By creating social spaces and physical connections through offices, the project is able to create a more personal and intimate experience among coworkers, those who work in related fields, and the general public.

44 | INTRODUCTION

FILINVEST CITY Transformed in 1995 to become an integrated and self-contained urban development, Filinvest City today is a master planned mixed-use development that responds to the rise of global businesses as well as catering to the lifestyle needs of its residents. Filinvest City is designed to be sustainable and future-proof with residential, office, and retail developments integrated in mixed-use developments to achieve an experiential central business district for residents and workers to practice the mantra, “live-work-play”. Aiming for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development certification, Filinvest City is home to several LEED certified high rise structures such as the HSBC Office Building and Vector Three.

STRATEGY Setbacks were first applied to set the boundary of the extruded general massing. Following this, the massing with vertically split to create a clear axis coming from the northern and southern regions of the site. The massing was then split horizontally into separate blocks to reduce the bulky proportion. Next, the voids were organically shaped to create compelling views. Bridges were then created to further link the building. Lastly, the massing was lifted to create a porous podium to activate the ground level.
