ARTIST BIO georgina

I was born in 1983 here in the UK and grew up in a medium sized town in Cheshire, a lovely place with old empty mill buildings, a gorgeous Victorian park and a rich visual history. I always loved looking at the buildings around me as I grew up, imagining how things were in the past I still do in fact. With my paintings I aim to evoke thoughts of nature, gardens and skies in those viewing them, but simultaneously I like for the works to retain an element of ambiguity, of total abstraction, thus leaving them completely open to interpretation - I love hearing what people see in my work! Alongside for my passion for natures sits a deep-seated passion for spontaneity and expression , which finds its form in the brush marks and spiralling gestural lines which come to rest on top of the soft atmospheric veils of colour which make up the body of my paintings. My more abstract work focuses on just that, abstraction! But also colour and speed, simply enjoying the colours and the paint. I sometimes like to switch my processes around, allowing myself to work in a much freer, simpler abstract style.

“I am a self-taught artist born in the UK and now located in Warrington, having lived in Mauritius during my career. I am interested in the intangible, that which we feel but cannot translate. My paintings begin with feelings derived from alternative perspectives bordering on a spiritual level. Inspirations for me are found within the colours of nature; such as the iridescence of a paua shell or reflected light underwater. Working the contrasts of depth, texture & luminosity and a slightly obsessive edge, intricacy & layering. I choose to take you on a journey of the cosmos around me and the discovery of art being a spiritual experience.

Lisa is a mixed media artist who takes her influence from the patterns and textures of everyday life. “Each life is a journey, made up of emotions & experiences we have along the way. I love the feeling of freedom that use of different mediums allows. Often it is just a variation in texture that can create something totally unexpected.” “Every one of my paintings reflects the different layers that create our own unique individuality. It is for this reason that I leave it up to the owner of the painting to decide which way it should hang. We all see something different! ”

“Since my youth I have been passionate about art which I found was a balance to my interests in more pragmatic subjects such as maths and science. This very much reflects my personality which also explains my profession as an architect; a profession that is both regimented and boundless. Art gives me the control to break rules and paint by instinct. Painting is my chosen medium, but I am equally fascinated by sculpture and find inspiration in works by Rodin and Michelangelo. I especially admire the manner in which Rodin seemingly left some of his pieces unfinished or rough around the edges to better express movement and life. This is a style I also enjoy in paintings, best exemplified by Turner, an artist whose use of light and tone I feel has greatly affected me in my personal and artistic capacity.

ARTIST BIO rachel

"I started to paint simply for pleasure and very rapidly, to my surprise and delight, my work generated a great deal of interest. This inspired me to experiment with innovative techniques and mixed media to develop my own style. I aim to create bold, vibrant, emotive and energetic canvases. The paintings range from representational images to textural abstracts, from wildlife to majestic coastal scenes with a great deal in between. I like to think that the use of striking colour is the defining indicator of my work." Rachel has participated in many exhibitions throughout the UK to wide acclaim; and has been published on calendars and Christmas and greetings cards. She is regularly invited to exhibit at the Artshed Gallery in Ware, Hertfordshire. Recently her work has been displayed at the Picturecraft Gallery Holt, Norfolk. Rachel paints both for exhibition and by private and public commission.

ARTIST BIO Claire M

Claire’s artwork is based on botanical sculpture/ installation/ photography and illustration by creating a body of work around a particular flower. She allows the subject to lead her into new directions as she explores the essence of nature.

Claire asks us what do we know about plants. She reflects on what has been planted in our conscious verses our deep experience of plants. With her detailed paintings and drawing of everyday flowers, not in high bloom, but on the wane, her hope is that we re-see, beyond our prejudices, an image of something unfamiliar: Unfamiliar because the flower in her paintings are both magnified and spent, an unfamiliar combination for the viewer. The water colour paintings are botanically correct showing the structure and function of plants at a scale that a bee may observe. Her current project titled - Identity, derives from microscopic studies of plant anatomy of spent Michaelmas daisies.

I studied A level art at Blackpool and the Fylde College where I learnt the basics of drawing and painting. I progressed my work further by studying at The Cumbria College of Art & Design where I achieved a degree in fine art. My style changed dramatically from a traditional style to a kind of semi abstract expressionist style of landscape painting to total abstraction which is where I feel most comfortable. Abstract art for me has no limits or boundaries and just gets more enjoyable every time I create a new piece. I use a variety of techniques and applications which may include painting, airbrush, photography and digitally collage. I’m interested in the effect of shapes and forms and how they can be arranged together over interesting grounds to create space and movement.

Paul’s work looks at Phenomenology... the structure of different forms of experience including perception, thought, memory, imagination, emotion and desire. Through the use of multiple exposures the work depicts the joining together, combination and amalgamation of many different images, the same way knowledge is built up through perceiving. This layering also allows him to capture all of the available light and shadow from the landscape, which merges together to create images that are both beautiful and mysterious.

Based in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England, I am a self taught artist working predominantly within the digital medium, creating multi layered and multi textural digital collages My work is inspired by the various colours & textures that I see in everyday life from an old rusty door to flaking paint on walls, and these inspirations build into multi textured pieces. I draw inspiration from inner city life and the natural decay of urban spaces. Creativity for me is being inspired by anything from colours and textures to music and also the urban decay of city life. My creativity usually flows more at night but is never limited to one time of day, as it can be kick-started by the simplest of things.

ARTIST BIO michelle

Michelle’s art is work of elegant simplicity which, in itself, is the first of many seductions into an engagement with a complex network of tensions. The work is bedded in the clear space between opposites; the movement captured in stillness; the fragility and ephemerality of nature captured in the strength and permanence of industrial, man made materials; inexorable freedom within the clinically defined limitations of space. Whilst utilising symbols found in nature that have a timeless constancy, the methods and media used are innovative applications of contemporary industrial materials subtly handled, so that even the closest scrutiny give almost no intimation of their origins. This play between the timeless and the immediate is at the heart of Michelle's work. However tranquil the order of the instant may seem it cannot segregate itself from the underlying chaos of nature and it is into this engagement with chaos that we are lured, so unassumingly, by the captivating simplicity of order.

ARTIST BIO grace

"Grace is an independent fine artist working in London. She has exhibited extensively, including at "The Biscuit Factory", "Vyner Street" and "The Royal British Institute". In 2009 she was awarded a chance to appear alongside Paula Rego and Peter Blake in an international auction of art-works in the 'Newcomers' section and in 2011 worked alongside Katerina Seda at the Tate Modern. Most recently she was selected as a featured artist for Rise Art's ‘Top 100 artists of the future’. Grace's abstract landscapes act as a sort of escapism from city life and a channel into the natural world. In particular, Berlin and the ideology surrounding the forest has strongly influenced her work. The poet Tom Westerman reviews Grace's practice from a recent exhibition: 'Through the artist's experience of natural beauty spots within cityscapes and raw pastoral settings the sense of awe these paintings instil work as a powerful reminder of the infinite colour, diversity and multi-dimensionality of human experience.'

ARTIST BIO elena

Elena is a London based contemporary abstract painter. Praised for her natural feel for colours, she is an astute observer of interpersonal relationships, which inspire her to create thoughtprovoking works. A self-taught painter, Elena was born in 1980 in a small town in Transylvania. She lived in Paris and travelled extensively before settling down in London a decade ago. Elena’s paintings are abstract poetical representations of friendships, love stories, family or professional relationships in our cosmopolite and multicultural society. In order to represent feelings, she continuously develops her own language that is dominated by bold colours and shapes. Elena enjoys the versatility of the acrylic mediums and paints, using pouring, spraying, glazing and other techniques to create layers and depth. She loves to explore the way the paint moves and colours blend and to experiment with the textural qualities of the paint using original and unconventional application tools. Elena is proud to participate in prestigious exhibitions like the SWA Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London and also to have works residing in private collections in USA, Australia, Hong Kong, Belgium, France and the UK.

ARTIST BIO michael

Michael first started taking photographs on childhood holidays in North Wales and has been absorbed by the medium ever since. His vision and technique have been honed and refined by over 30 years of image making, both commercially and through his own artistic practice. Although traditionally trained (it doesn’t seem that long since he was loading sheet film and splashing around in the darkroom) he now embraces digital technology and the creative possibilities it possesses. His subjects vary in scale and location, but essentially he explores the natural rhythms and patterns of the world around him. This can involve contemplating time and tide at the extremities of the British Isles or examining the intimate detail of delicate still-life in his studio. When not behind a camera he enjoys scoring 50 points or more with obscure and useless two letter words at Scrabble, and he’s rather partial to millionaire shortbread at the many lovely cafes in Didsbury (a leafy suburb of Manchester where he lives).

ARTIST BIO kiran

Kiran is an artist using the concept of translating the ephemeral nature of thought to a visual form, where the spoken words are silenced and the art imagery is tuned into the invisible forms of engagement, where emotions are aroused and intuition is channelled. All works are open to the personal perceptions of the viewer for each is impacted through their own processes of personal and impersonal thought. The medium of acrylic, pastels and ink are used in a form that is an extension of a waking meditative practice using the actions of painting to access the instincts that require an exhalation. Where painting as a need becomes as inevitable as breath is to being alive. Previously exhibited works throughout London and visual artist for the published book The Future We Choose alongside numerous features in online and magazine publications. Born into a family of artists, Bagueps studied applied arts in Paris at Oliviers de Serre, specializing in interior design. After graduating, she worked for a French cabinet-making firm for seven years, where she gained her experience in creating materials and finishes. In her paintings, she strives to translate the peaceful feeling she gets from the inspiration of nature, in particular the beauty of the sky. Having painted since childhood, Bagueps aims to capture the colourful vibrations of the everyday; the sky is a constantly changing canvas she wishes to replicate. Her principal subject is the inbetween; the flux between two states. She begins with an initial inspiration and then lets the painting guide her. Mixing different materials such as acrylic, oil, marble powder and silver powder, the colour and texture takes on its own form.

ARTIST BIO sophie

Sophie is a British artist & architect based in London. She finds inspiration from her environment both past and present; some of this draws from time living in Asia and Australia. Sophie’s work seeks to interpret the essentiality beyond the purely visual. She has a curiosity in how memory can focus this; filter it, and how individuals with the same visual experience can come away with such different visual memories of it. The process of creating allows an idea to expand and distil again as a concept, with images often becoming abstract and calm in the process. Her figurative work is much quicker, it seeks to capture the substance of the pose, be that weight, tension, movement, form or emotion - the life within it.

Jane’s work references the ever changing outlines of the landscape. Her gestural paintings exude energy and movement, and are often on a large scale. Her abstract paintings contain a real sense of place, inspired in equal measure by the South Downs and London. The amalgamation of these contrasting environments is evident in her work. From this is an obvious process of deconstruction and reconstruction. For Jane the act of painting is a continuous process, always changing and taking away, to create something new.

ARTIST BIO colin

Colin trained at the Reigate School of Art in Surrey, and now lives on the Sussex coast, soaking up the wonderful light and the beautiful, varied landscape. His work is inspired by the daily observation of his surroundings, combined with memories of past fleeting moments that are both personal and universal – perhaps a glimpse of the sea through woodland, a cloudburst, a howling gale or a cliff-top walk at sunset. ‘Weather has fascinated me since childhood. It’s the sensation, the feeling of being in the landscape that I aim for – the mysterious, elemental and ever-changing drama of light and shadow, of wind, water and sky transforming a landscape in a blink of an eye. I want to capture the feeling, memory and the essence of a place and time in my work. I’ll sometimes complete a piece outside, but I’m happiest making thumbnail pencil sketches on site with colour, wind and light direction notes, then working up the final painting in the studio with memory and imagination engaged. It’s an organic process where the original sketch and/or memory is reconceived using layers of paint and scraping back and then more layers and scraping until there is a finished piece’

Chris has been an astro-photographer since 2001 as an extension of his lifelong interest in astronomy. Chris feels fortunate to be able to turn what began as an absorbing hobby into a full time profession which he loves and where there is so much to discover. Chris has won awards for his photography and contributed articles to the BBC Publication “The Sky at Night” and UK “Astronomy Now “magazines. Chris enjoys the challenges of capturing data from objects which are trillions of miles away where the light has travelled through the universe over thousands or even millions of years to reach his camera. Chris is passionate and dedicated in his pursuit of an outstanding photograph of a deep sky object as a starting point for his art. He creatively manipulates the data to produce wall art with immense impact on glass and acrylic. Beautiful art in its own right, each piece comes with a fascinating story. It may be Nebulae which is giving birth to stars like our Sun, a gigantic galaxy made up of a trillion stars or a star spectacularly disintegrating in vivid colour. Such art makes the cosmos more accessible and brings these wondrous distant objects closer to home.

“After an upbringing on the family farm on the coast of North Cornwall, I left my tractor behind to train in graphic design and illustration at Kingston University in the mid '80s. I’ve since spent thirty years in the creative industry in London, first as an illustrator and graphic designer, and now as a full time artist. Urban life inspires me, seeking to capture the perpetually evolving patterns and rhythms of architecture and people in my work. I paint this 'dance to the music of time' by combining an observational drawing style with colour, marks, texture and pattern. My goal is to spark a recognition and dialogue with the viewer, asking them to discover in my paintings a visual expression of their own urban lives.

Sue studied at Croydon College of Art and then followed a career in graphic design, working as both in-house and as a freelance designer within publishing, marketing and product development. Art in one form or another has always consumed a large part of her life and after inspiring journeys to South Africa and Australia she left the world of digital design to rekindle her love of painting. She works with acrylics, painting abstract landscapes on canvas, with texture being an important ingredient to the finished work. The paintings are completely from imagination and the challenge she always sets herself is to capture an atmospheric scene, a mysterious place where the colours and shapes can mean many different things that can change as the work is viewed. “Every painting is a journey that takes me along many different directions to its final destination and when it is done I often wonder how did I get there.

A love of landscape is central to my work. I am always drawn to the sea, lakes and rivers. Echoes, distortions and reflections create interesting effects to work with. Originally from Guernsey, the stunning and diverse landscape, inspired me to develop my method of working. I love drawing and photographing on location, in different times of day and various weather. I use a combination of the sketches and photos to start the paintings. I enjoy working with a variety of oils, pigments, varnishes and inks. I revel in the investigative process sanding back and revealing sections of the image. I tip my canvases to allow the paint to pool and drip. I enjoy finding new textures, and experimenting with oil and water based paint. Salt and thin areas of plaster change the character of the image.

My recent work has been influenced by spending time in Cornwall and looking at the paintings of the St Ives artists, including Peter Lanyon. I have been using collage to experiment with creating a new dimension to the landscape, using line to give energy to, and to help capture the particular mood of, a place. I am continuing this idea with my work in paint on canvas too. In addition, I continue to draw from the figure, trying to keep the energy and essence of the pose. “These figures are not the hour long slog pursued in the academic life class, but have the feeling of imminent change and therefore truly ‘life’.” (Frank Low, Art Critic)

The major thrust of my personal work reflects my love of the sea and the coast, whatever country I’m in. When the different textures of sky, earth and water are combined with the organic shapes that wind and tide give us, I’m enthralled and try to capture what I feel as well as what I see. I think that this comes from a larger appreciation of the forces of nature, the incredible energy they have, and my optimism that we might properly harvest that energy in the future. I have secondary and less excavated areas of interest, which include the female form and it’s influence on contemporary product design, and the interaction between man made structures and the environment.

“Born in Athens and now living in London since the late 90’s, I am a landscape architect(University of Greenwich)and architect (Southbank University & Royal College of Art). I am intrigued and driven by the journey from the narrative to the image, this journey guides me to explore form, colour, perspective and depth in the overlapping consecutive layers. The narrative feeds the different layers of the painting, just as in a conventional way of designing on tracing paper, transporting my words onto the canvas. The narrative is constructed much like designing, from observation, to research, to sketching, and finally to testing the proposed solution. Using printing rollers, and mixing the paint on the canvas, I place my words through the different media and the outcome informs the text. As a response the narrative is updated and consequently another layer is created on the canvas. This dialogue eventually concludes.”

“In my work, my main concern is about myself. Therefore, my paintings are always focused on six main perceptions, which are Self-Portrait, Complexity of Brain, Universe, The status of Stillness, Map and Dream. For me, these topics' relationships are related to each other closely. Currently, my art practice is trying to develop the idea of Complexity of Brain. What is the exact reason to make the numerous thoughts in my mind? It is really interesting and leading me to have the desire to explore the possibilities of it. Thus, through this concept, I attempt to use psychological and mathematical way to explain it, and I see myself as a doctor and patient in the same time, to heal myself through the monologue from the inner part. During this process, I imagine acting like a doctor to analyse and dissect my brain, and then observe it as a method, it seems like I am doing a surgery to(for) myself, the idea of surgery is also creating more space to think about the complexity. “

Paul specialises in contemporary semiabstract seascapes and landscapes. The two themes are very different in mood, style and perspective, but all endeavour to generate a sense of intimacy and isolation while leaving the subject open to interpretation. The intention is to create from memory to produce finished work that is abstracted and more expressional than representational. Paul’s main aim is to create work that is most definitely painted; an antidote to mass produced visuals we consume everyday. This is accomplished by using rich textures, multiple layers and brush/palette knife marks. Paul wants his paintings to tease out more than the eye can see, to draw people in and invite them to experience – not just consume – an image.

ARTIST BIO adrienne

Adrienne paints in oils on canvas or linen and sometimes on silk or wood. “My latest work is abstract paintings suggesting land and seascapes. "It is imagination, it comes from nowhere and is not worked out in advance and decided upon in terms of content or shape or colour – it forms itself, the colours merge and it is allowed to be. I like the image to form itself as I start to work and build up layers of colour and shade. I am interested in painting in a seamless way avoiding lines and edges and even brush strokes. Lines and edges define things and influence how we perceive them so I like to remove any lines and edges by merging colour and form and so make suggestions to the viewer that might trigger a memory or feeling of somewhere or something. This smooth, seamlessness I think suggests a transience and so fluid subjects like air or skies or memories can be caught and held for our gaze. The work is about potential expressed in a non verbal language and because it is not prescriptive it is more open to allowing our own creative and emotional interpretation

Beginning from research and intense conceptualising, Danish artist Rikke seeks the unknown mysteries in life. Considering all life forms and their basic similarities, she looks for balance in nature, and explores the light and the dark side of this organic process. In her artwork, Rikke invites the viewer for a journey through inner and outer spaces – to bring both worlds into balance and observe them. She transforms emotions into unpredictable forms in her abstract paintings. At the moment of painting, Rikke is not sure of what will finally happen on canvas, leaving it up to chance. This results in a spontaneous element of expression, going with the flow and exploring many possibilities of visualisation. Using a microscope to study cell structures, she is intrigued by the darker aspects of organic and cellular life.

Henrietta paints abstracts in oil on canvas in which she aims to evoke a time and a place, creating spaces full of light and memory. “It is not the appearance of a chosen motif but its own energies and mystery that form the heart of my paintings” Nature is the basis, the starting point, for the paintings, which rapidly take on a direction of their own where the dancing light or the feel of the wind becomes the main focus. They are compositions woven from images of the natural world. “It is the power and energy of nature that excites me. Light and movement allow the creation of the space in my work, often opening up huge vistas. The finished pieces range from almost totally abstract compositions evoking a sense of place to more easily recognizable landscape images: the natural world modulated by time and season, disclosed by visual texture and colour” Henrietta’s works can be found in collections in New York, Houston, Sydney, Perth, Paris as well as the UK

Internationally exhibited artist Beth studied Textile Design at The University of the West of England and graduated in 2004. From Bristol she moved to London for a little under a decade, working in costume for film, television and theatre and teaching arts and craft workshops. In 2009, Beth was offered a post as an Artist in residence at Wycombe Abbey School for Girls. The residency helped her focus and build a strong foundation for her practise, exploring both femininity and textures and introducing her to the concept of WabiSabi. Returning to London in 2011 Beth has been exhibiting in art fairs and exhibitions both nationally and internationally since. The foundation of my current body of work lies in the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi: exploring the beauty found within transience. From finding a rotting garment by a stream to a stream of consciousness, my current collection travels through ethereal, abstract landscape style paintings into figurative ink drawings that investigate the subconscious. My work is extremely cathartic. I spend hours slowly manipulating the ink to find the right composition and sometimes when its dry writing streams of consciousness on top of the work. The writing for me is an important element, as a dyslexic it can at times be a huge struggle, but at other times the thoughts flow and the time flies. My work therefore is about time and energy and expresses and exposes me as a person.

Each painting has a blue background which simulates the traditional paper-based reproduction of a technical drawing of the early 20th century. These prints were blue with white lined drawings. The size of each canvas is based on the 'Golden Rectangle'. This is an idealised proportion where the ratio of the longer side to the shorter is the golden ratio used for millennia which is pleasing to the eye and works on the proportion of phi = 1.6180339887.

Laura is a London based Italian artist. She studied painting in Venice at the Academy of Fine Art and sculpture at TAM Art Metal-Working School in Pietrarubbia (Pesaro-Urbino), Italy, supervised by sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro. The tendency towards nothingness is inexorable and universal and even the things that have corporeity not have an illusion of stability. As things start to transform become more irregular and interesting. Nothing that exists is free of imperfections, and everything is in a constant state of becoming or dissolving. When things are close to non-existence become naturally more delicate and evocative. In my work, I am intrigued to see how science and art are connected; I try to strike a balance between painting, collage and installation. It revolves around the concept of Wabi-Sabi, transformation, time and connections. In my recent paintings I worked from a mix of papers and my own photographs, either transcribed intact or altered to create a new composition. Through the painting process I try gently to heighten the qualities in the picture that first caught my attention.

I tend to work in series and draw inspiration from classical and popular music, fashion and graphic signs and symbols. I am also inspired by the Victorian obsession of collecting, preserving and presenting insects in boxes. My butterflies are created from collaged paper and each butterfly is individually hand cut.

“The human and material landscape is where I draw my inspiration. Captured through my lens or found through digging deep, the environment I live in and the world I travel through provides a limitless source of references that enthuse, intrigue and excite. My own photography or ‘found’ material provide me with the origins from which my artwork is created. I am always striving to find ways of adding another visual ‘layer’ to the inherently two-dimensional nature of my source. Having graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine Art, I chose to take an extended sabbatical from sugar tints, soft grounds, solarisation and f-stops to concentrate on getting a proper job. However a career in design and production, whilst allowing me within reason to indulge in creative fantasies, never really fully satisfied my artistic appetite. Marc was born in Neuilly sur Seine, France, in 1964. Growing up in Paris, he began playing the flute at a young age and went on to train as a concert musician at the Paris Conservatoire, where he graduated with honors. Marc arrived in America in 1984 to take up the saxophone and continue his studies in jazz composition at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. However while music, with its foundation of tone and composition, provided him the means for expression, it would ultimately be in painting that Marc found his creative voice. At last, with the intention of starting his career as a painter, Marc began traveling regularly to New York City to meet with other artists and visit museums and galleries. Early influences included such visionaries as Mark Rothko, Joan Miro, Antoni TĂ pies, Cy Twombly and Nicholas de StaĂŤl, who, interestingly, was an ardent lover of music and drew inspiration from musical performances. Continuing to study and refine his craft, Marc first saw his work exhibited in Boston in 1987.

She has penetrated innovative painting techniques and styles aiming at finding an expression and manner that her art can appear in its individual recognition and to define her own singular identity as an artist. Carolina paintings are created mostly in series. Her art is dominated by free and abstract approach. Through the composition and the vivid colours artist finds the balance and harmony, which emanate and energise viewer as well as the space around. Caroline is intrigued by many aspects of life and culture, which she transforms into the style that she finds accurate for the theme. Her art is as universal as the art could be and it does provoke to communicate with the vision and the feelings depicted. Colour is the intervening substance through which impressions are conveyed to the senses. Minimalism as a way of expression focuses here on the relationship of colour, perception and space.

He is recognised for producing works of urban scenes and iconic architecture. With influences coming from Japanese Ukiyo-e and Constructivism, Jayson has great admiration for the work of Katsushika Hokusai and Alexander Rodchenko. His love of early twentieth century Art Deco and Bauhaus to the Brutalism of the post-war period is evident throughout his work. Characterised by its strong compositional structure and a limited palette, Jayson uses high contrasts with light and shadow to convey form and silhouette defined by his clean lines and large areas of flat colour. Jayson trained at UCA, where he gained a First Class Honours degree in Visual Communication. He worked in book cover design before becoming a professional artist. Malaika was born in Kenya, and has had an international upbringing, relocating to Canada, and then to the United States, India, the Cote d’Ivoire and France. With her interest in art developed by her grandfather, a self taught painter, she moved to London to study Fine Art at Goldsmiths. Through an accidental breakthrough moment whilst at university, she developed a technique layering dried acrylic onto canvas. By peeling, tearing or cutting the paint after it has dried, Malaika is able to create ‘acrylic leaf’, which she uses in a similar way to gold leaf. the physical presence of the acrylic rising from the canvas is just as important as the visual effect of colour on a surface. By emphasising the ‘tactile’ aspect of the acrylic leaf, she aims to give the viewer a greater insight into the physical process of creating the artwork, namely the acts of peeling, tearing, crumpling and sticking the acrylic. This handling of the paint is, for her, a cathartic and enjoyable experience that should be shared with the viewer. Her three dimensional constructions defy categorisation, as they contain elements of painting, collage or sculpture

ARTIST BIO vaughn

Vaughn creates his three dimensional art with materials such as plywood and acrylic. “Patterns interest me: they are the background, the fabric and the landscape in which we live. Patterns are made by the weave of thread in cloth, the repeated laying of bricks in a wall, the individual decisions of a billion consumers or the single pixel of a digital screen. They record a process of thinking and making inside every product created by men Patterns are blueprints, used to move data across space and time. Complex patterns inside nature remember a million years of Darwinian history. Patterns of human settlement, grids of streets and pavements remember the interests and politics of people now long gone. The pattern of a fingerprint records identity, controls our access to space and allows movement across national boundaries. Form, identity and icon are spectacles which can be constructed. In a world of spectacle, pattern is silent and barely noticeable. It is often invisible, often unintentional. It is manifested in elegance, logic, beauty, brutality, music, weather, language, planning, coincidence and accident. Patterns are dynamic, stable and restrictive in every measure. I work with patterns because they construct and constrain reality, for better and for worse. Although they are quiet (because they are quiet) they are very powerful. Made visible by art, they can be exposed, interrogated and challenged.

“In all my work I am interested in following a very simple system which is devised prior to execution and cannot be deviated from during the course of production. There is an abandonment of colour, of gesture, of the expressive, and instead I instate an almost mechanistic methodology that minimises the decision making process and emphasises a systemic approach. In this respect the work can be seen more as a result, bounded by a set of rules as opposed to something derived from an intuitive, responsive operation. There is a meditative aspect to the work, the repetition of a singular form or action synonymous with some mantra, yet this repetition equally feeds into a minimalist convention, where industrial conformity and a stark mathematical edge underpin each piece. Although aesthetically, the work appears almost machined, they are very much hand made objects, obsessively laboured and crafted. I am attempting with each piece to follow through the process as accurately as possible, however, there are invariably "mistakes" present. This presence of the human acts to undercut the implicit abandonment of any expressive or gestural mark making. One is thrown into relief by the other. The work occupies a space between this pure, reductive detachment of authorship, and an acknowledgement of the hand made.

ARTIST BIO rogan

Rogan is an Anglo-Irish artist who currently resides in the south of France. His work explores the boundaries between observational study and artistic interpretation, existing somewhere between scientific accuracy and pure, unbridled imagination. Using both a scalpel and a laser he creates intricate, fragile relief sculpture out of layers of cut paper making multiple visual references: marine algae, cell structures, microbes, pathogens, neurons, coral, fossils, fungi. Each work starts as a detailed drawing and then grows organically layer after layer, playing with the dynamic of repetition and variation until a kind of critical mass is achieved and the work asserts its own uniqueness and autonomy. The process of production is slow and painstaking with some pieces taking up to five months to complete. The ultimate aim is to create works that invite quiet contemplation of the vastness, complexity and beauty of the natural world that surrounds us.

ARTIST BIO beatriz

A Spanish artist currently living in London, Beatriz is inspired by her surroundings and translates the energy and visual information of her daily life into her work using colour as her personal language. The viewer, in turn, is drawn into the vortexes of movement in her images, yet they offer points of seductive languor along the way, in the presence of floral shapes opening outward, clouds that provide moments of rest, and other suggestive elements. At the same time, Beatriz’s paintings feature a strong sense of depth, which derives from her knowledge of architecture — the field in which she began her career —and the importance to her of the landscape of her hometown of Santander, Spain. While her work always references landscape or spatial depth, she avoids the presence of a horizon line. Thus departing from classical conceptions of space, she creates dialogues between different spatial planes, allowing viewers to find their own road maps. Her use of colour spots, drips, and splatters convey her fearless and intuitive process while making all of the elements in these imaginary worlds seem to be alive.

German artist John's conceptual work is an attempt to discern governing principles of the universe - art as a way of enquiring about the world. Artistic investigation, as a way of inquiring about the world, keeps asking the same perennial questions about origin of matter as science and religion. It bridges scientific and spiritual dimensions by conveying a message which is both: universal and deeply personal. His art transcends the dualism of objective and subjective, matter and spirit. It goes beyond the established framework of human knowledge and beliefs towards the state of ubiquitous oneness. He believes that every form of existence, from a thought, a feeling, matter to space and time is one and the same energy governed by the same principle and being a part of the Singular Universe. Dualism exists only as our perception and it is through their singularity that we can access the truth.

ARTIST BIO john
