LEADERSHIP
ORNAMENT AS CRAFT – THE ARTICULATION OF SURFACE AS NARRATIVE Ornament is currently acquiring a renewed status through the articulation of architectural surface. In architecture, ornament tends to communicate cultural identity especially if it is based on regional craft. However, it is therefore difficult to apply culturally specific crafts and ornaments in an inclusive and multivocal architecture. The abstraction of visual representation of cultural artifacts affords the opportunity to move away from the distinct associations. The dissertation argues that ornament has its own language that mediates between material characteristics and the art of making. It will also assess whether the articulation of surface is the interface between architecture and culture. The intention of the dissertation is to establish a critical approach to the making of culturally relevant contemporary architecture.

VPUU - VIOLENCE PREVENTION THROUGH URBAN UPGRADE A Post Occupancy Evaluation of a series of projects undertaken in Khayelitsha. The project was an attempt to activate and create safe nodes along a new urban strip, creating secure dynamic urban parks. The model of intervention is based on an integrated approach between social situational and institutional crime prevention initiatives with the aim to reduce the high crime rates within the four Safe Node Areas. The improvement of the socio economic situation is key to the success of VPUU. Through research each of the nodes, we and conducted a survey of intention vs. reality complied a document. Leading the management team, we edited and published the document at the University of Cape Town.
TEAMWORK I operate at my best in a team set-up. Although working alone on projects has its perks, being part of a team brings new exciting challenges and solutions to the table.
EXHIBITIONS M.ARCH (PROF) EXHIBITION The University of Cape Town Master of Architecture class’s design dissertation presentations. The exhibition showcased the 36 student projects completed in 2013. I managed the time schedule, logistics and documentation. ARCHITECTURAL LEAGUE CAPE TOWN A Presentation of the past, present and future built environments of Cape Town. The exhibition entailed a collection of work by contemporary architects, designers and artists to be auctioned in aid of the annual research tour undertaken by the Masters class. Together with Beth Stevens, we curated the collection and managed the gallery for the duration of the exhibition. The success of the 20x20 auction has become a yearly fundraising institution.
INTERESTS INTEGRATED DESIGN The most fascinating thing about design is where different discipline comes together. The success of being a design thinker is in the translation of concept into the craft of making. The blurred line between architecture and interior design is where my focus lies.
TRAVEL Inspirational people and places – I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to do so. Although international travelling seems more idyllic; travel within the borders of South Africa gets me as excited.

Working for Holm Jordaan, I was part of the design team for the renovation of the West Coast offices for the SABS in Cape Town. The site is located in Rosebank, which is a Project residential area. Drawing Title predominantly NEW PROPOSAL 03 P390 SABS WEST COAST OFFICE REDEVELOPMENT It was important to keep to a domestic scale andat the same time interpret the corporate image of the SABS. The site strategy is phased over time to allow for occupancy of the labs and offices whilst the builing process is taking place. COPYRIGHT OF THIS DRAWING AND ITS CONTENTS IS HELD BY HOLM JORDAAN MEAGO ARCHITECTS & URBAN DESIGNERS
The accommodation schedule includes testing laboratories, offices and training facilities. What I learnt during this project was the incorporation of all the safery and regulatory requirements needed for this specific programme. RAINBOW JUNCTION This is a private housing development situated in Pretoria, Gauteng. It consists of two adjacent erven with a central access point. There are five unit types which differ in configuration, size and price range. The middle areas around which the blocks are arrange create green courts for landscaping and recreational areas. What I appreciated about this project was the exposure to the tough and gruling world of property development. Constuction is to start in the first quater of 2016.

Abalone Lodge is a 4 star guesthouse in Hermanus right on the coast. For the renovation we added five bedrooms and updated the kitchen, dining and recreational areas. I enjoyed the resort-like design and luxurious coastal look and feel of the building. PORTFOLIO | ABALONE LODGE | HERMANUS

The clients for this project wanted a multi-functional space that they could use as art gallery and studios. The artist and writer couple currently live on the adjacent property and felt the need for addional space where they could host art shows or even musical perfomances. The project included a art studio, printing studio, writing room and a larger gallery space. Two additional cottages where also designed for the property where guests can enjoy a weekend writer’s and artist’s retreat. Extensive landscaping alterations where included in the project to enhance the already beautiful surroundings. The project will be complete in July 2015. This fantastic 1950’s block is located on Beach Rd in Strand. With clever spatial configuration we deciced to approach the project as restoration rather than renovation. Other than the obvious fixture replacements and new surface treatments we tried to keep the principles of 1950’s modernist design. Many of the joinery details where taken from the initial installation. The apartment is now modern and luxe but without making it an open-plan living/dining area as many of the renovations in the block have done. The inclusion of a built-in daybed in the study allow for versitility in the use of the room. EXISTING BATHROOM AND WC
This was my first high-end project of this nature and I thoroughly enjoyed the design as well as the implementation of it.

The design of the space is in line with the philosophy of her fine baking – simple, fresh and modern. The Scandinavian feel of natural materials is amplified by the bright use of colour for the display cases and the orthogonal lines of steel and glass.
Marianne Wine Estate is located outside of Stellenbosch on the R44. The project included the renovation of the tasting room and lounge, a retail area for merchandise and reception for the loft accommodation, as well as the refurbishment of four lofts apartments.

The design solution was a contemporary take on an industrial space with the Marianne brand as main focus. The lofts had a modern African interior with a fresh approach.
Over the last three years I have been involved in the concept development of the events arena for DESIGN INDABA as well as the stand design for the ABSA art exhibition. Projects were executed from conception to completion.

What I enjoyed most about this type of design is the massive visual impact these stands need to have. The clear design perimeters and budget constraints are challenging but help develop and shape the outcomes into coherent products.

For the Design Dissertation of the master degree I design a South African Language Museum situated on Church Square in Cape Town. The design included a public forum where members of the public could have on goings in parliament interpreted and narrated in all of the 11 official South African languages, an audio exhibition of the constitution, reading rooms and a cafe at the top of the building - looking over the square with Table Mountain as backdrop. I designed patterns for each of the languages which became as ornamental fritted glass screen for the addition to Creative House. Each of the names of the languages were manipulated and repeated to form the pattern. In this way language could be equally represented in an abstract way. The main intention of the design was not to alter the current state of the square and its environment, but to rather add a layer of meaning in this historically sensitive setting.
