airways MESSAGE FROM DIVISIONAL HEADQUARTERS BY DANNY RICHMOND (GB-ADIR) Evening all, welcome to the January edition of Airways magazine. 2014 was a great year for IVAO United Kingdom & Ireland, we saw two RFEs, Ireland and the United Kingdom became one division and we also had numerous of staff changes throughout. I would like to thank everyone for a fantastic year and we look forward to the years to come. In 2015 we are already planning numerous events including more of the successful RFE(s), tours are due to be published soon and FRAs are changing to increase AD rated controllers. I hope you enjoy the year ahead!

airways DESTINATION GUIDE Duxford Aerodrome (EGSU) Duxford Aerodrome is owned by Imperial War Museums and is home to the Imperial War Museum Duxford and the American Air Museum. Duxford played a large part and maintained a high state of readiness during the Second World War. In 1943, Duxford was handed over to the United States Army Air Force (USAAF). In 1945, Duxford was returned to the RAF and for the next sixteen years it remained an RAF Fighter Command station, although it was closed for two years from October 1949 to have a single concrete runway laid. This, together with a new perimeter track and apron allowed for the better handling of jet aircraft. The airfield has featured in a number of movies including “Battle of Britain” and “Memphis Belle”. The aerodrome has a 4,931ft runway (06R/24L) and a 2,887ft grass runway (06L/24R). On IVAO, Duxford can be controlled by anyone! However as with all positions, before controlling please familiarise yourself with the area and procedures.

airways EVENTS UPDATE BY ALEXANDER CLOVER (GB-EC) On the 13 December 2014, IVAO hosted one of the biggest events on the network! We were able to break our record and gain over 2,303 simultaneous connections to the network. We would like to thank all members who connected either as controller or pilot, and anyone awaiting their award please be patient. This month the IVAO United Kingdom & Ireland Special Operations and Events departments would like to welcome you to our first event of 2015. On the 17 and 18 January 2015 we will be putting on a historic airshow at the home of the Imperial War Museum at Duxford in Cambridgeshire. All aircraft that were manufactured before 1955 are welcome; these include but are not restricted to: Avro Shackleton, DeHavilland Chipmunk, DeHavilliand Comet, Hawker Hurricane, North American Sabre, Supermarine Spitfire, etc. Obviously warbirds are preferred, however! From 1800z on the 17 January, will be providing an Aerodrome Flight Information Service (AFIS) at Duxford, operating as Duxford Information on 122.075, for aircraft to arrive the evening before the airshow. From 1200z on 18 January, we will be hosting the Duxford Historic Airshow. This is where those who had flown in the previous night or any other pilots would like to come and show off their pre-1955 aircraft to the (virtual) public and all other airshow participants. There will be a schedule for displays which will be a maximum of 20 minutes in length. The display will end at 1800z giving us a massive 6 hours of display time.

To earn this award, all you have to do is help out at controller on-the-job training sessions by controlling an ATC position which helps a trainee! Upcoming OJT sessions are always stickied on the Exams and Training Sessions board.

Assist in 10 practical ATC exams/training sessions, on a position that co-ordinates with the Position the trainee is on
Assist in 20 practical ATC exams/training sessions by flying TO/FROM the active airfield
ATC must be connected for at least 30 minutes of duration
Flights must be at least 30 minutes of duration
In the event of disconnection you are to reconnect with the shortest delay - You must mention this in your report
Flights must be flown online
Remember to report the length and duration of the time you have controlled in UTC time. Each session must be validated. Completed ATC assistance sessions must be reported after each controlled session using the appropriate form.
Double check your flight plan carefully before submitting it for an online flight.
