Drupal as your CMS – few good reasons! During a recent conversation with a friend of mine, we discussed his decision to recommend Drupal as the Content Management System (CMS) for his company. He asked me if I had anything to add that would help make his case to the management team. Immediately, I mentioned if you choose Drupal, you will be in good company as Whitehouse, Warner Brothers, AOL Corporate, Fast Company, and other major corporations use Drupal as their CMS. After this conversation, I started thinking that maybe I should gather more information about why Drupal should be considered if you are evaluating a CMS. I compiled a lot of information, both from my personal experiences as well as research. This exercise convinced me that there are compelling reasons to choose Drupal. Below are my findings: 1. Drupal is the most popular and powerful CMS with a huge install base and a massive developer community 2. It has a clean, extensible code base 3. High performance guaranteed (sounds a bit cheesy but true) – infinitely scalable built-in caching and integrates easily with 3rd party caching mechanisms 4. Over 1800 add-on modules allows you to address most of your business needs 5. Boasts a proven security track record – addresses new threats in real time 6. It’s SEO friendly without needing search engine expertise. In addition, there are plug-ins for meta-tags and page titles available 7. Drupal supports a taxonomical structure for content categorization, with rulebased permissions systems and browser-based administration 8. It’s a social publishing infrastructure that offers a foundation for blogs, wikis, articles, forums, social networking, etc. 9. With seven major releases to date (Drupal 7) and a powerful theming engine that keeps content separate from presentation, Drupal is easy to install and maintain as an open source CMS 10. My last point comes from personal experience with Drupal. I find it satisfies both the geeks and the business user, keeps the pace with little licensing talk to worry about and falls in the apache-mysql-php stack
