Zagreb
is the capital of the Republic of Croatia and its cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative centre. It is located in the north-west side of the country on the southern slopes of the Medvednica Mountain along the River Sava. Although the oldest settlement in the urban area of Zagreb was a Roman town of Andautonia, now Šćitarjevo, the real beginnings of Zagreb can be traced to two medieval settlements. The smaller and eastern Kaptol, inhabited mainly by clergy and housing Zagreb Cathedral, was founded in 1094 when Hungarian King Ladislav (1040 – 1095) established the Zagreb Diocese. The larger and western Gradec, inhabited mainly by farmers and merchants, was proclaimed a free and a royal city by the Golden Bull of King Bela IV in 1242 as a sign of his gratitude for offering him a refuge from Tatars. Gradec (the Upper Town) and Kaptol were united in 1851 by Viceroy Josip Jelačić (1801 – 1859), who is also accredited for naming the main city square, Ban (Governor) Josip Jelačić Square. There is a legend of how the city was named: on a sunny day, a brave governor, exhausted from a battle, asked a girl named Manda to ladle him out (“zagrabiti” in Croatian) some water from the spring (Manduševac) and the city became Zagreb. In the second half of the 19th century the town spread its borders southward and the new centre was created - the Down Town: from Ban Jelačić Square in the north to Central Station in the south and from West Railway Station to Drašković Street in the east. The most representative part of the town between Petrinjska and Savska Street, consists of series of squares, called Green Horseshoe, due to the abundance of plants. Important cultural and scientific institutions of the town are placed there. The position of the town enabled its development and Zagreb soon started to spread. The area between Central Station and the River Sava witnessed a new construction boom after the World War II. New residential areas south of the River Sava were built (The New Zagreb) and the town expanded both westward and eastward. Today, Zagreb extends over 30 kilometres (19 miles) east-west and around 20 kilometres (12 miles) northsouth. It is the only metropolitan area in Croatia known for its high quality of living, which makes it more interesting to the foreigners who welcome to enjoy and spend some quality time in the town with million hearts.

St George Killing the Dragon
The Stone Gate is Zagreb’s only preserved gate from medieval defence walls
and one of the most recognizable symbols. Although it was first mentioned in 1429, it is assumed to have been built in 1266. In 1760 it was renovated after a great fire that destroyed much of Gradec on the 31 May 1731, burning down houses that were close to the Stone Gate. According to a legend all wooden parts of the Gate were destroyed, except for the painting of the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus. To commemorate the event, grateful citizens built a chapel within the arch of the Old Stone Gate. On the 200th anniversary of its miraculous salvation from the fire, the 31 May 1931, the painting on canvas depicts Our Lady with a gold crown which was added to the altar of the chapel. Today many believers come here to pray, light candles and worship the Virgin Mary of the Stone Gate.
St Mark’s Square is situated in the centre of the Upper Town with the Church of
St Mark in the middle. It was the centre of trade and social life of the former Gradec until the mid-19th century when it became the Croatian political centre. Today, it is still the symbol of political life in Croatia – Croatian presidents take their oath here and important state institutions such as the Croatian Parliament, the Government and the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Croatia are placed in the surrounding buildings. The Old Town Hall is placed in Ćirilometodska Street and it has been there since the Middle Ages. Today, it is the place for the Town Assembly meetings.
St Mark’s Church is the parish church of the
old Zagreb and one of its oldest buildings. It was built in the 13th century and from that Romanesque period a window in the south wall of the church and a bell-tower remain. In the second half of the 14th century, the church was reconstructed and turned into a late Gothic church. The most valuable part of St Mark’s Church is its south portal, considered to be the work of the sculptors of the Parler family from Prague (end of the 14th century). The Gothic composition of the portal consists of fifteen effigies placed in eleven shallow niches. The statues of Joseph and Mary with infant Jesus are on top, and below them one can see St Mark and the Lion; the Twelve Apostles are placed on both sides of the portal (four wooden statues replacing the original

ones which was destroyed). In its artistic composition and the number of statues, this portal is the richest and the most valuable Gothic portal in South Eastern Europe. On the north-western wall there is the oldest coat of arms of Zagreb from 1499. On the roof, tiles are laid so that they represent the coat of arms of Zagreb (white castle with the red background) and the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia. Again, St Mark’s Church the church has been reconstructed twice until today, in the second half of the 19th century according to the Viennese architects’ design, Friedrich von Schmidt (1825 – 1891) and Hermann Bollé (1845 – 1926), and in the first half of the 20th century, when the painter Jozo Kljaković (1889 – 1969) painted its walls and the works of the famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883 – 1962) were put onto the altar.
St Catherine’s Church, placed at Katarinski Square in the Upper Town, is the finest baroque church in Zagreb, built between 1620 and 1632 by the Jesuits. A monastery was built adjacent to the church and today it is a home to the art gallery Klovićevi Dvori. The church is one-nave with six side chapels and a shrine. The chapels have five wooden baroque altars from the 17th century and one marble altar from 1729. The ceiling and the walls are full of stucco from 1732. In the shrine, on the main altar, there is a big illusionists’ composition St Catherine among the Philosophers of Alexandria, painted by Kristofor Andrija Jelovšek (Slovenian painter from Ljubljana). St Catherine’s Church was twice damaged in a fire, once in 1645 and again in 1674. Its interior was devastated but refurnished with the help of wealthy Croatian nobles. The last disaster was the 1880’s earthquake after which the church needed a reconstruction done according to Hermann Bollé’s project. Lotrščak Tower
The Lotrščak Tower was built in the middle
of the 13th century to guard the southern gate of the town wall, a former small gate Dverce, demolished in 1812 during the reconstruction of the southern promenade, called the Strossmayer Promenade. The tower is the best preserved building of the former defence system of Gradec. The name is derived from Latin „campana latrunculorum“, the Bell of Thief as it was called, referring to the bell hung in the tower to signal the closing of the town gates. Instead of the Bell of Thief, the Grič Cannon has been fired from the tower each day at noon since the 1 January 1877 until present time. The blasting of Zagreb’s cannon has become one of its traditions and also the most peaceful one in the world.

The Funicular links the Upper Town (Strossmayer Promenade and the Lotrščak Tower) with the Down Town (Ilica Street). Its 66-metre (217 ft) track makes it one of the shortest public-transport funiculars in the world. The funicular was built in 1890, but due to frequent damages, it has been in operation since the 23 April 1893. It initially had steam engines which were substituted with electrical engines in 1934. Its present appearance dates from 1974. Having in mind that it kept its original shape, constructional and most of the technical properties, it was given legal protection as a monument of culture.
Funicular
The Strossmayer Promenade, tree-lined alley, placed along the former southern defensive wall of Gradec, was built at the end of the 19th century with money donated by private citizens. It was named after Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer (1815 – 1905), a prominent member of the Croatian Cultural Revival and an eminently influential person of the 19th-century society and politics. From the promenade there are magnificent views of the Down Town, as well as of Zagreb Cathedral and the whole Kaptol. The promenade got its final form at the beginning of the 20th century when public stairs, fence walls and lamps were added. Citizens of Zagreb and its visitors like to walk along the promenade and rest a little next to the great Croatian poet and writer Antun Gustav Matoš (1873 – 1914) on The statue of Matoš resting on a bench. This original monument is the work of the well known sculptor Ivan Kožarić (1921). The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary
Cathedral of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary
on Kaptol is the tallest and most monumental Neo-Gothic style sacral building in Croatia, south-east of the Alps. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to St Stephen, the Hungarian king, its second patron. The cathedral had a long history of construction and restoration after several acts and threats of terrorism and natural disasters. The construction started soon after the establishment of the Diocese of Zagreb (about 1094) in the transitional Romanesque-Gothic style and was finished in 1217, but Tatars destroyed it in 1242. The Bishop Timothy (1263 – 1287) started the construction of the new, Gothic style monumental cathedral on remnants of the older one and it lasted during the 14th and the 15th century. In the 16th century the cathedral was fortified by walls and towers due to fear of the Ottoman Turks. After the threat had passed (17th century), a single bell-tower was built in Renaissance and Baroque style.

During the 18th century, the cathedral fortifications on the south and east were reconstructed into monumental bishop’s palace. The cathedral was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1880. The main nave collapsed and the bell-tower was damaged beyond repair. The restoration of the cathedral in the Neo-Gothic style was led by Hermann Bollé (1845 – 1926), according to the design of Friedrich von Schmidt (1825 – 1891), bringing the cathedral to its present form with two elegant bell-towers (105 m or 344,5 ft) that became the symbol of Zagreb. Even though one tower with the wall in front of the cathedral was pulled down in 1906 in order to open the view of the renoA.G. Matoš Statue vated front, the walls remain one of the best preserved Renaissance defence walls in Europe. In front of the cathedral, at the Kaptol Square, there is a statue of the Holy Virgin Mary with four angels, work of an Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn (1813 – 1878). The Treasury of the cathedral contains fine works of religious art and objects that, along with rich cathedral interior, represent an important cultural and religious heritage of the Croatian people.
Tkalčićeva Street is the most attractive and colourful street in Zagreb, a place
bustling with life in front of numerous traditional shops, cafés and restaurants, particularly during hot summer evenings. Tkalčićeva Street used to be called Potok which means a brook and it flowed through the present street dividing Gradec and Kaptol. The Power of the water from the brook was used for the mills that supplied citiziens of Zagreb with flour. First manufactures of paper, cloth, stonemasonry, liqueurs and leather factory were built here. The leather factory was constructed in 1864 and developed into the largest one in the city. Industrial development caused the pollution of the water. At the end of the 19th century, the creek had to be covered and its waters diverted into the Ribnjak Valley, and later on, to the Sava River. In 1913 the street was named after the historian Ivan the Baptist Tkalčić (1840 – 1905) who had dedicated his life to the study of the history of the Zagreb Diocese and the City of Zagreb. Complete reconstruction of the street was made in the second half of the 20th century. A statue of the great Croatian female novelist and the first Croatian female journalist, Marija Jurić – Zagorka (1873 – 1957) is placed in its central part.

has existed since the 17th century as the place of provincial fair and market, named Harmica. In 1848 the square was renamed in the honour of Ban Josip Jelačić (1801 – 1859). The statue of Ban Josip Jelačić on a horse standing in the middle of the square was created by an Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn (1813 - 1878) and it was installed on the 19 October 1866 by Austrian authorities. After the World War II, 1947 the Communist government removed the statue and renamed the square Trg Republike (The Republic Square) accusing him of being a servant of foreign interests.

Antun Bauer, the curator of Gliptoteka Gallery, kept it in the gallery cellar until 1990. In 1990 after elections in Croatia and public petition, the statue was returned to the square and the name has again been changed in Ban Josip Jelačić’s honour and his struggle for freedom and unification of Croatian provinces against Hungarians. The square has always been the centre of city’s social life and most popular meeting point.
Zrinjevac is named after the Croatian Ban Nikola Šubić Zrinjski (1508 - 1566) who died defending Hungarian fortress of Szigetvar besieged by the Ottoman invaders. It is a part of ‘’LenuAcademy of Music ci’s Horseshoe’’ or ‘’Green Horseshoe’’. It consists of eight squares in Donji Grad laid by an engineer Milan Lenuci (1849 – 1924) in the 19th century. The central fountain was the first fountain, built in 1878. It is popularly called ‘’The Mushroom’’ because of its shape and it was designed by the architect Herman Bollé. The Art Pavilion is an art gallery established in 1898. The original idea and initiative for the construction of the Art Pavilion in Zagreb was given in 1895 by a painter Vlaho Bukovac, the most remarkable person in Zagreb’s artistic and cultural life on the transition of the centuries. The Art Pavilion is the oldest gallery in Southeast Europe designed for large, representative exhibitions. During its more than 120-year existence, almost all remarkable exhibitions which exceeded the framework (limits) of Zagreb with their significance were held in there. The pavilion is situated between Zrinjevac Park and King Tomislav Square.

Medvedgrad
Medvedgrad is an old fortress built in the 13th century on the southern slopes of Mount Medvednica at an altitude of 593 m. This location provided a perfect position to control the surroundings and traffic routes. The question of the period and the cause of constructing Medvedgrad has not yet been fully clarified. The period between 1249 and 1254 is the most frequently mentioned as the period of its construction upon the orders of the Bishop Philip of Zagreb defending the Kaptol and the bishop’s possessions from the attacks of the Tatars. Historians consider Medvedgrad a classic burg with elements of high quality. A burg is a German word and signifies a fortress, a castle or a palace, a residence of local rulers and royalty, surrounded by defensive walls. Medvedgrad, therefore, represents the best preserved example of a medieval burg in Croatia. Around 1260, King Bela IV (1206 – 1270) entrusted the fortress to the Duke Stjepko Šubić, and later it was governed by many Croatian bans and nobles. It was significantly damaged by an earthquake in 1590, and due to the consequences it was abandoned in 1602 by its last residents. Many stories and legends are connected to Medvedgrad, and in some records, it is even called the cursed city - Maledictum Castrum Medved. The most famous is the story of the Black Queen, who sold her soul to the Satan, her screams echoing in the night and her treasure buried somewhere in the interior walls of Medvedgrad. During the seventies, an extensive archaeological research began when an early Gothic octagonal chapel Saint Philip and Jacob was discovered and fully restored. After completion of the conservation work, at the bottom of the southern wall, The Altar of the Homeland was erected in 1994, a monument to those who died during the Croatian War of Independence and a place of reverence to the Croatian homeland. The monument is assembled of cubes with carved motifs from the time of Duke Branimir, with a large cross and verses of the Croatian national anthem. In the middle, there is an “eternal fire”. Medvedgrad offers a breath taking view of the city of Zagreb and is regarded by many as the best place for watching Zagreb at night.

Zagreb has a very dynamic and diverse gastronomic scene that favours all tastes. We have made a selection of interesting restaurants that offer an unforgettable gastronomic pleasure. For all of you who would like to try something traditional or typical of Croatian cuisine we recommend two restaurants frequented by the locals and the tourists equally. Mesnička street has been a favourite gastronomic meeting point for years and years. Its ideal location, where Upper Town meets Lower Town, must have something to do with it. It is in Mesnička street where a restaurant of longtime tradition – Stari Fijaker 900 – is situated. The Stari Fijaker offers a full menu of authentic traditional culinary delicacies representing the Zagreb-Zagorje region of Croatia. We highly recommend that you try our punjeka paprika (stuffed peppers), sarma (cabbage rolls), purica s mlincima (a traditional Croatian Christmas meal - roast turkey with a delicious pasta-like side dish, made of cooked unleavened dough seasoned with turkey drippings), and of course štrukli (cooked cheese-filled pastry, unlike anything you’ve had before, but this is the quintessential Croatian comfort food that you will want to have again and again).

Curry Bowl is the first Sri Lankan restaurant in Zagreb, situated in Tkalčićeva Street 44. It was first opened by two brothers from Sri Lanka who introduced the rich and exotic Asian flavors to Zagreb. All the dishes come in different spice intensity, so as to respect the European dining habits but at the same time satisfy those who enjoy the real spicy taste. We recommend you start with Fried chicken with home made curry mayo, continue with Kotthu – the most famous Sri Lankan street food, and finish with Sri Lankan Chocolate Biscuit Pudding or Curry Bowl Homemade Avocado Ice Cream. All the main dishes are made from different types of meat, and there are vegetarian and vegan versions as well. For a full experience we recommend Lion beer – the most popular Sri Lankan beer, whose taste is indeed a surprise.

With almost 40 years of tradition, Vincek has become one of the leading Croatian producers of pastries, cakes, ice cream, chestnut puree and other unique delicious desserts. Cerovečki Umbrellas are to be found in all corners of the world and have been made since 1912 by the Cerovečki family, that has a hundred year long tradition. The most popular ones amongst the tourist are the Šestine umbrellas, which are also a symbol of Zagreb, whose unique red coloured design can be found at the city’s main market – Dolac. In its long family tradition the family company has exhibited its umbrellas in Germany and the USA, and in 1936 the hatmaker Gabrijel Cerovečki won the first Golden Plaque Award and the Grand Prix of London. It is interesting to know that the family used to make custom-made umbrellas for many foreign film productions in Zagreb, such as American, British and German film productions. If you want to buy an ideal souvenir in Zagreb, or just reward yourself with a best quality umbrella, be sure to look for the family boutique in Ilica Street 49. Aside from hand-made umbrellas, there is a great selection of Fossil bags, wallets, and raincoats with the recognizable Šestine pattern in the shop.

Next to the most beautiful passageway in Zagreb, Oktogon, ‘Hats by Kobali’ was opened in 1974 by Nada Kobali, who transforms simple hats into true art. ‘Every single hat tells a story – it looks for a head and is beautiful only if it finds one’, says the famous milliner, who represents the fourth generation of hatmakers in her family and who has inherited the love of hats together with the original shapers that are still in use. Indulge yourself with an original hand-made hat that will complete your style and become a memory of your travel as well.

Museums Turbulent and eventful Croatian history, together with world-famous and Croatian artists, are surely a good reason why you should take some time when in Zagreb and visit numerous museums that will most certainly impress you with their collections of paintings, sculptures, graphics as well as archeological, technical, scientific, and other artefacts. For all of you who are interested not just in the visual part of a city but also its history, we recommend the Zagreb City Museum. Visit its beautiful building situated in Upper town and find out more about Zagreb’s spiritual and everyday life, its culture and architecture, famous people, great romances and hardships of its inhabitants. If you want to learn more about past and present of the Croatian fine arts, you must by all means visit the Modern Gallery, where you will find an outstanding art collection. The holdings of the Modern Gallery, with more than 11,000 works, constitute the richest collection of Croatian fine art of the 19th, the 20th, and the 21st century. Its permanent display includes more than 750 most representative contemporary, more contemporary and the most contemporary painters, sculptors, medal-makers and new media artists embodying some of the high points of the Croatian art from the 19th century until today. Let us mention the most prominent ones such as Vlaho Bukovac, Mato Celestin Medović, Josip Račić, Ivan Meštrović, Ivo Kerdić and many more who are responsible for the affirmation of Croatian art in Europe.

How can you learn more about a culture, customs and traditions if not by visiting Ethnographic Museum. The one in Zagreb takes pride in its collection of items from all parts of Croatia as well as donated private collections. A Collection of Extraordinary Dolls in authentic local national costumes for example, collected and donated by a Croatian emmigrant from Argentina Ljeposav Perinić, which was donated to the city, that is museum, in 1992. Museums are an important part of any metropolitan city and the Museum of Contemporary Art is unavoidable in that way. Zagreb, of course, has one too. The work of the architect Igor Franić, it prides in its Collection in Motion, which emphasises: movement, change and uncertainty shown through different frames together with its permanent exhibition of course. In addition, numerous cultural events as well as temporary exhibitions are organised in the museum’s multifunctional space.

By all means do not leave Zagreb without visiting the beautiful Upper town premises of Atelier Meštrović. This elegant building that dates from the 17th century was once a home to one of the most famous Croatian artists Ivan Meštrović, who lived and worked there from 1922 to 1942. The atelier comprises a collection of around 100 sculptures, drawings, lithographies as well as parts of furniture from the first four decades of his work. It is less known that Meštrović worked as an architect so that many parts of the Atelier are his creations. The Museum of Arts and Crafts, situated in Down Town, was founded in 1880 at the initiative of the Arts Association and its then president Izidor Kršnjavi and represented one of the first such institutions in Europe. Today, its holdings contain around one hundred thousand artefacts of the fine and applied arts, dating from the 14th to the 21th century, organised into collections: furniture, glass, metal, ceramics, sculpture, painting, graphic art, clocks, graphic and product design, architecture, photography (one of the oldest such collections in the world) and photographic equipment, textiles and fashion, musical instruments, painted leather, ivory, printing and bookbinding. Museums are no longer places in which exhibits are to be found in show cases and on the walls exclusively. The best example for this is Museum of Illusions. If you’re ready for a true adventure, visit Museum of Illusions in Ilica Street in Zagreb. A fascinating world of illusions will leave you breathless and you can also learn a lot while having great fun and testing your own perception of reality at the same time. The museum welcomes all generations but children, as one might guess, are the happiest to be there. Fight the force of gravity in the anti-gravity room, enjoy the largest collection of holograms in this part of Europe, serve your head on the platter, climb the ceiling – and those are just some of the attractions within the museum. There’s much more inside. One of the prize-winning and most original museums is by all means Museum of Broken Relationships, which is also the winner of the prestigious Kenneth Hudson – European museum award for the most innovative museum in Europe. This introduction alone should be a reason enough for a visit. Its exhibits will remind you of your own personal experiences and will make you look at them from another perspective. Since Croats have been famous for their love of cars, it only seems fair to have a museum dedicated to cars as well. Automobiles Museum Ferdinand Budicki comprises not just old-timers, motorbikes and bikes but also other artefacts somehow connected to automobilism and automotive industry of this region. In addition to this, there’s more than a couple of hours of film material from 1909 to 1990 and numerous events in which car lovers can take part.

Alongside being famous car lovers Croats are also big sports fans. One of the museums is therefore dedicated to the great Croatian basketball player Dražen Petrović, who tragically passed away before his time. Memorial Center Dražen Petrović was opened in 2006 and was initially planned as a way of keeping the memory of this extraordinary player alive as well as introduce younger generations into the world of sport. Close by there is Mimara Museum where you can see a rich and diverse collection of antiquity artefacts and European art of early Middle Ages. The part that represents Eastern art from the Middle to Far East is especially plentiful. Archeological Museum is situated in the heart of the city. Its permanent exhibition consists of Prehistoric and the Egyptian collection, Greek and Roman collection, Numismatic collection and the Lapidarium, a collection of stone monuments in the Museum courtyard. One of the most interesting exhibits is by all means an Egyptian mummy by the name Nesi-hensu.

Zagreb Advent has become a celebration of a magical time on the streets of Zagreb. The city streets and squares are turned into a stage where a number of markets, cultural events and concerts are organised. The people of Zagreb are hospitable and will welcome you with open arms while offering excellent local and international specialities, and the mesmerizing smell of cinnamon, vanilla, and mulled wine will take you to another, more jolly, world. Come have fun in the city streets and squares. Let’s take a walk through Zagreb starting at its most romantic park - Zrinjevac Park - where the beginning of Advent is traditionally marked by lighting of the Christmas lights. Ice park on King Tomislav Square - with its exquisitely designed ice rink – is another fun destination for you to enjoy winter time, and all the fun it brings. As you go back, be sure to visit European Square, which has become younger generations’ favourite gathering point. Excellent concerts, various attractions, exhibitions, and supreme food contribute to an urban atmosphere of a truly European city. If you feel like trying traditional Croatian specialities, there is the favourite place of many locals – Cheese Bar – situated in Augusta Cesarca Street. Come visit the Cheese
Bar and enjoy some original dishes like Istrian stew ‘zgvacet’, which is prepared with the meat of Istrian cattle Boskarin, sarma, brodetto, wild boar sausage and other. After a great meal, you may either head towards Kaptol to visit a live nativity scene, or cross Ban Jelačić Square with its Christmas Tale and go up to the Upper Town, where a number of great surprises await for you. Advent at the Klovićevi Dvori with the famous photo frame for you to take some pictures in, Advent on Stross and the Vranyczany Plateau, Caffe de Matoš with its charming cafes and Advent in Tkalča. Don’t miss Advent in Grič Tunnel, which connects Mesnička and Radićeva Street, Fooling Around at Josip Juraj Strossmayer Square or Advent in Maksimir and the ZOO. Be sure to listen to traditional concerts From Christmas Balconies to Zagreb – classical music concerts by the six-piece Ad gloriam brass ensemble in Tkalčićeva Street and at the Stone Gate. Whichever location you decide to pick, great fun is guaranteed, and Zagreb will definitely live up to your expectations having won three consecutive Best Christmas Market awards.

How to deal with one of the greatest health problems of modern day – bad vision? The answer is to be found in the leading ophthalmology clinic in the region, Specialized Hospital for Ophthalmology Svjetlost. Samobor
Samobor is a medieval town of baroque architecture situated on the eastern side of
Samobor mountains, right at the entrance into the romantic valley of Gradna creek. It is located only 20 kilometers away from Zagreb and is, therefore, the oldest and most beloved day trip destination of people from Zagreb, hikers, trekkers and both Croatian and foreign tourists. Due to its rich gastronomic tradition, as well as numerous organised events, the city attracts food lovers who gladly frequent Samobor. Those who visit Samobor do not leave without trying the famous Samobor creamy cake – kremšnita. Samobor has always been known for its long tradition of craftmanship. Thanks to the many artisan families you may, even today, find products made by old artisans such as licitars, gingerbread, hand cut crystal...., and you can visit them all! The city is surrounded by the Nature Park Žumberak – Samobor mountains, and offers numerous attractions such as spending time in untouched nature, long walks, visiting the famous waterfalls and other fun activities – from mountaineering to cycling and paragliding. Many traditional, cultural, music, entertainment and gastronomic events take place throughout the year and the most famous one is the Samobor Carnival, which has a tradition of more than 190 years. See you in Samobor!
Karlovac is situated at the crossroads of a roads and railway system headed from Zagreb towards Rijeka and Split. Alongside its numerous parks and green areas, it is a unique town through which four rivers, Korana, Kupa, Dobra, and Mrežnica, steadily flow. Because of it, Karlovac is known as the City on Four Rivers. The oldest remains of a human settlement dating from 3500 B.C. were found in what is today the old town Dubovac. The beginning of construction of Karlovac Karlovac fortress began on 13th July 1579 during the turbulent times of enemy conquests. It has a hexagon shape, or more precisely a form of a six-pointed star, and it is an example of an ideal Renaissance city. Karlovac had been a military town for three centuries prior to having been proclaimed a free royal city. At the beginning of the 19th century it was the richest Croatian town due to commerce and trade. There are plenty of reasons why you should visit Karlovac. It could be 88

swimming in the Korana river, rowing down the Kupa river, relaxing in the old town Dubovac, visiting the Old Star, enjoying the view of old stained glass in the Church of Holy Trinity, visiting the Franciscan Veliki Tabor monastery or Karlovac City Museum, walking through the Vrbanić gardens… there are plenty more, but one of them should definitely be a visit to Aquatika Freshwater Aquarium, where you can dive under the surface into the world of freshwater fish and the four Karlovac rivers in a very different and unique way.

is a fortress and a museum from the 12th century, located three kilometres east of Desinić in the Zagorje Region. The Five-Cornered Tower is the oldest part of the castle built in the 12th century. Other towers were built in the 15th and the 16th century. Croatian noble family Rattkay were the owners until 1793 and they built most of the castle. Oton Iveković (1869 – 1939), a Croatian painter, owned the castle from 1927 until 1935 and today it is owned by the state.
Marija Bistrica is a little town and municipality located in KrapinaZagorje Region, 40km from the capital city of Zagreb. In Marija Bistrica there is an old Marian shrine of the Black Madonna visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year. In 1545 a local priest hid the wonder-working statue of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus from the Turks in a secret location. In 1588 bright light shone from the place where it was buried and, according to the records, it was discovered again. On 3 October 1998, Pope John Paul II (1920 – 2005) visited Marija Bistrica and beatified Croatian Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac (1898 – 1960).

Krapina, first mentioned in 1193, is located in the Zagorje Region. In the 14th century Krapina was a free royal trading place and a residence of the Croatian ban (governor) until the end of the 15th century. Krapina is best known for the remains belonging to Neanderthals, excavated by an archaeologist and a palaeontologist Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger (1856 – 1936) in a cave on a hill called Hušnjakovo near Krapina in 1899. Today, there are reconstructions of pre-historic men and animals in front of the cave. The Evolution Museum with a permanent exhibition was opened on the site.

Gornja Stubica – The Peasant’s Revolt Museum is located in the Zagorje Region,
situated in the baroque palace of the Oršić family from the 18th century. The palace was built in 1756, last members of the Oršić family left the palace in 1924. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the palace was completely renovated and the Peasants’ Revolt Museum was placed in it. The Museum collects materials and objects divided into three collections: cultural and historical, art and ethnographic which also includes archaeological findings from the ancient town of Konjšćina. Every year the Medieval Knight’s Tournament is organized in the Oršić Castle in June and there you can try fencing or participate in medieval soccer. Medieval Knight’s Tournament

EXPLORE ZAGREB 2019
Trakošćan is one of the most attractive and most visited castles located in the Northern Croatia (Varaždin Region). It was built in the 13th century as a fortress. In the 16th century it was managed by the emperor Maximilian II (1527 -1576), who gave the estate to a ban and a bishop of Zagreb Joseph II Drašković in 1569 for the services rendered and it later became a family heritage. Nikola Zrinski was the owner of the property in the middle of the 17th century for several years (1645 – 1651). In the 19th century, it was renovated in neo-gothic style surrounded with an artificial lake, a garden and a forest-park. The Castle Museum with its collection was established in 1953. The Republic of Croatia owns the castle today and it is opened to visitors all the time.

Varaždin
Varaždin is located in the Northern Croatia, 81 km away from Zagreb and it is a very popular tourist destination in the summer time for its rich cultural heritage, many museums, galleries, sport and recreation facilities as well as traditional cuisine. First written historical name for Varaždin was Garestin on the 20 August 1181. City was a free royal borough declared by the Hungarian King Andrew II in 1209 and became military and economic centre of the Northern Croatia. The Old Town is a medieval fortress and a biggest tourist attraction in the city. Construction began in the 14th century and afterwards Gothic rounded towers were added. In 1756, Varaždin became the capital of Croatia and it housed the Croatian Sabor (Parliament) and the Royal Croatian Council. Most of the churches and buildings were built in the Baroque style. In 1776, a fire destroyed most of the town causing administrative institutions to move to Zagreb. The town was completely rebuilt in the 19th century and in the 20th century it developed into the industrial centre of north-western Croatia. Trakošćan Lake view
