2009 “Sustainability will be probably the most used word during our century, but how sustainable are we? How sustainable are our societies? How sustainable are we preparing ourselves for the next centuries? Sustainability are dependent of our options, on how we want to use natural resources or on how we want to live with the natural resources making our lives dependent of them!

diploma(cy): diagnosis Portugal

"Vinhas minhas, olivais dos meus pais, montados dos meus antepassados" "Vineyards mine, olive forests of my parents, montados of my ancestors"

Montado_ is the name of the landscape of this part of Portugal. This kind of landscape is one of the most sustainable landscapes because of the special way that it regulates the biodiversity. This landscape is mainly constituted by: Cork oak forests, Vineyards, Olive forests and Citrus forests This kind of landscape has been developed during more than 1000 years, is not a wild landscape but takes to long time to rebuilt mainly because of the long time that the cork oak forests take to grow. Another reason why this landscape is very sustainable is because of the way that regulates the water in the ground.

Soil Soil_Alentejo

The soil has the same characteristics as the mediterranean soils, is poor and bad to another kind of cultures. Constituted by clay and earth, usually the summers are too long and dry. The main changes in the landscape occur between the autumn and the spring. Changes in colour and biodiversty. The temperatures in the summer, (can go over 40ยบ) but in the rest of the year the temperatures and the quantity of water are more helpful for biodiverty.

Morphology Alentejo

Alentejo region is well known as the flat region, huge fields, huge sky and white housing. The morphology of this part of Portugal is flat with smooth hills, where the "white towns" are the references in the landscape.

Water Juromenha

Some old articles shows that this town started around the IX century, and was developed to protect the portuguese border against the spanish invasions. Got in decade when this place stopped to be a strategic place.

Water

One of the biggest issues in this region is the long and hot summers (over 40 ยบ C) associated to a typical Mediterranean soil, means that the water is a good scarce at both the population as at the farm level.

Guadiana river

Alqueva

Influence area

Estrela

Amieira

These investments could be seen as an asset for the region if the investments were planned with a tight relation with the resident populations and local economy.

_Elderly population _Low education _Mainly of the population are farmers _Internal migrations to the bigger centers _Slow life style, dependent of the agriculture _Isolated populations

_Religious procession _Local parades _Christmas bonfire _New year's bonfire _Local teams parties _Bullfight _Food fairs

Economy

This construction didn!t return only the hope for the region, also attract big tourism investors, and consequently big projects start being planned (resorts, spa, hotels...).

Is placed in the highest point of this region, having a previligious view over the river and over the Alentejo region.

Culture

Mourao

Luz

It is the most north town of Guadian river, in the portuguese border, and the most north town in the alqueva region.

Alqueva Lake

Alqueva Lake In the last years has returned a new hope. The construction of the dam in the Guadiana River, created the largest artificial lake in Europe. Built with the intention of developing the region both agricultural and population level.
