Office furniture systems

Vitra’s office furniture systems are both functional and aesthetic. The result of highly developed office design expertise, these systems enhance working conditions, thus motivating employees and contributing towards increased productivity. Moreover, the different products and systems complement each other and can be effectively mixed and matched. They can also be adapted over the long term to meet new technical developments and changing requirements. 7

Ad Hoc

Antonio Citterio

The Ad Hoc office furniture system was developed in 1994 together with Antonio Citterio, and has been continuously developed since then. It is both a prototype and a classic. Its versatility, coupled with the high quality of materials and workmanship and timeless, technically elegant design, ensure a long service life and superior efficiency. Ad Hoc is versatile and able to fulfil various requirements. For instance, the Ad Hoc modular system enables configurations ranging from individual tables through to entire table systems, all of which can be fitted to meet individual needs. Ad Hoc High Work, for instance, is an innovative piece that promotes healthy working by allowing the user to stand. And individual Ad Hoc pieces such as meeting and visitors tables can be used to complement the modular system. Ad Hoc Executive offers elegant solutions for management (see Page 41 and 79).

Heights The new aluminium table legs are height adjustable. They make it possible to configure tables for sitting or standing at. Classic table legs made of chromed steel are also still available, bridging the gap between the new and the first generation of Ad Hoc products from 1994.

Accessories

The Ad Hoc modular elements can be used to create countless configurations for both sitting and standing while working. The office furniture system thus offers customised solutions for a broad variety of office environments and types.

Ad Hoc

A large selection of accessories makes it possible to individualise workstations. They enhance the versatility of the back end of the table top by providing storage trays and integrating lamps and monitors.

Screens Storage File boxes that are open or that feature lockable sliding doors offer storage space at workstations. Perforated side panels and optional fabric-covered back panels absorb noise and offer privacy.

Fabric-covered screens offer privacy and possess effective noise reducing characteristics. Thanks to the integrated aluminium profile, the screens can be fitted with accessories.

Flexibility

Configurations Ad Hoc offers workstations for many areas of application. The office furniture system can be used to create single and double workstations as easily as table arrangements for three, four, six or more persons.

10

Office furniture systems

Ad Hoc is flexible and durable. When needs change, only the necessary modular elements have to be swapped to adapt the configuration. This ensures that the life and efficiency of the office furniture system are longer and greater than average. All generations of Ad Hoc since 1994 have been mutually compatible.

Office furniture systems

Elegance The sculpted table legs made of polished aluminium give Ad Hoc its technical elegance.

11

Ad Hoc

For Ad Hoc, the functionality of every single detail has been tried and tested numerous times and, if necessary, improved. The high material quality and careful workmanship combined with an aesthetically elegant design guarantee that Ad Hoc pieces can be enjoyed for a long time.

“The modern office requires flexibility and adaptability. The Ad Hoc modular system makes aesthetically sophisticated working environments that can meet changing requirements.” — Antonio Citterio

Joyn

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

The inspiration for Joyn was the place where a family lives together. In Brittany, where the designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec grew up, the kitchen table was large enough to seat the entire family. It served as the place for social get-togethers, chance meetings and discussions, or as a place to retreat to. This flexibility also characterises the Joyn furniture system, and makes it possible to meet the needs of constantly changing office activities on a daily basis and in a practical manner. Joyn not only caters to the individual needs of employees, but also promotes efficient and communicative work processes.

14

15

Joyn

Joyn reflects the dynamics of the modern office. With this office system, the space assigned to each workstation is generally flexible. One and the same configuration can be used in spaces with few employees and in spaces with many employees. The Joyn office system therefore offers a practical foundation for today’s changing work culture. It brings together a variety of spatial functions on one single level: the platform.

Central console The Joyn platform can be used from both sides. There is a central cable tray for data and power cables as well as a console for installing screens, organisers, lamps and special adapters for flat screens.

Flexible use People who use Joyn can easily reconfigure its components at any time.

Lighting The lamps were developed simultaneously with Joyn. They are therefore functionally easy to integrate and match the office system aesthetically.

Micro architecture Joyn Hut is a roof-like construction featuring functional elements that serve to define and structure a space. 16

Office furniture systems

Screens The screens serve to divide and structure. Since they are merely clipped on, they can be easily moved at any time.

Useful accessories and the sophisticated electrification concept and cable management solutions make Joyn a highly flexible system which can easily be reconfigured whenever necessary. Simple and robust solutions ensure the flexibility that Joyn is known for.

New Tyde

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

With Tyde, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have developed a new range of height-adjustable tables. The technology needed for the height adjustment has been carefully and discreetly integrated, ensuring that Tyde is suitable for use in all kinds of office environments and in combination with other tables. Standing tables are usually only used at single workstations, but Tyde extends the concept to include double workstations, meeting tables and project tables, thus also offering the benefits of working while sitting and standing to teams. After all, alternating between sitting and standing while working is healthy: experts recommend that a person spend about 40 per cent of their time standing and 60 per cent sitting at their workplace. This prevents damage to health caused by putting monotonous stress on the body. Blood circulation also increases, boosting both concentration and motivation levels.

20

Office furniture systems

21

Individualisation Additional elements such as technical beams, various screens, CPU holders and accessories serve to individualise the workstations.

Good open-plan offices are productive spaces filled with vibrant energy. However, one common criticism is that the noise level often makes concentrating difficult. The aim when developing office furniture is therefore to design products that do not contribute to the noise level and even serve to reduce it if possible.

Tyde

Tyde meets these requirements effectively: the electric motor of the height adjustment mechanism is very quiet and is concealed by a noise-damping cover beneath the table. In addition, the newly developed screens made of sound-absorbing polyester fleece combined with the cover serve to effectively damp ambient noise.

Screens The noise-absorbing and lightweight screens made of pressed polyester fleece are available in various colours.

Height adjustment The height adjustment feature is available via an electric motor, via a crank, or by simple manual adjustment of the various seat heights.

Stability Thanks to their solid steel frame construction and cast legs, the tables are extremely stable even when they are in a raised position. This also applies to the cluster version. 22

Level 34

Werner Aisslinger

Level 34 is an unconventional office furniture system that looks like it was created for the home. Its main element is a 34 centimetre high bench, which gives the office furniture system a lightweight and floating appearance. It is the platform for various modules such as tables, cabinets, shelves, seating arrangements and flower boxes, and also includes the cable management system. A wide range of office types can be created by combining only a few elements. The modules are easy to reorganise and thus offer great flexibility when it comes to redesigning office spaces to meet new requirements.

26

Office furniture systems

Office furniture systems

27

Thanks to the integrated cable baskets, Level 34 can be interconnected both horizontally and vertically, making it possible to plan the layout of office spaces irrespective of double floors and of the placement of floor sockets. Level 34 is thus able to meet all kinds of demands, from single and team workstations with space for meetings through to lounge and lobby areas, and reception zones.

Level 34

Storage Spacious storage modules not only offer a place to store personal belongings, but can also be used jointly with others.

Options The Level 34 modules make it possible to combine a wide range of applications in a small space.

Modules The various modules offer a wide range of configuration options catering to different needs and environments.

High Working Central zone Level 34 is also suitable for the central zone in open-plan offices, i.e. as a place to temporarily retreat to or to hold meetings.

28

Office furniture systems

Electrification

Switching between sitting and standing while working means movement and this promotes circulation. This is healthy and increases concentration.

Cables at central locations in the floor are fed into cable trays from which power is supplied to the modules.

Office furniture systems

29

Level 34

The materials used for Level 34 exude a home-like atmosphere, in line with the appearance of the entire system. Some modules such as the flower box and the seat cushions were especially developed to do away with the severely plain look so typical of many office environments.

New Ad Hoc Executive Antonio Citterio

A company’s business culture is conveyed through its workstations and executive offices in particular. And within corporate cultures, the role of values such as transparency, teamwork and quality is becoming increasingly important. These values were the main focus when developing Ad Hoc Executive – the new furniture range by Antonio Citterio.

41

42

Management office

The centrepiece of Ad Hoc Executive is a large table, which can serve as a workstation or be used for meetings. The adjustable and leather-covered desk pad integrated into the fine wood veneered table top conceals the power and multimedia connections, and also serves as a useful storage space. Sideboards of various sizes made of anodised aluminium, oak and leather provide space for documents and personal belongings.

43

The representative and technically functional table ArchiMeda brings a healthy mix of sitting and standing options into the executive office. The solid wood veneered table top is height adjustable thanks to the scissor lifting mechanism. ArchiMeda is thus also suited for use as a dynamic table for meetings conducted either seated or standing (the latter is often appropriate when reviewing documents and plans).

Space layout

In the past, offices served as places for concentrating on individual work at one’s workstation and for talks in the meeting room. Today, however, in the age of teamwork and short exchanges, most communication takes place at the workplace. To concentrate on individual work and to hold both short and longer scheduled meetings, people meet at designated zones. We refer to this as “meet & retreat”. This modern and productive way of working only functions in office space layouts that have been planned and realised correctly – and feature suitable products. 49

New Workbays

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

With Workbays, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have developed an organic system which redefines the work environment and breaks with inflexible office planning grids. Workbays offer employees the freedom to retreat to a work environment that best suits the task they are completing. As a multifunctional furniture system, they are a practical solution for office planners. Thanks to the innovative, sound-absorbing material of Workbays, distracting noises surrounding the individual rooms are absorbed. The Workbays can therefore spontaneously be used as a telephone box, as a video conference room, as a place to drink coffee together or as a meeting venue – without requiring participants to remain behind closed doors.

50

Space layout

Space layout

51

Workbays

52

Workbays are suitable for all kinds of spaces. The system can easily be added to if the need arises or adapted if conditions change – it grows organically along with the office. The system is based on four different wall elements available in two heights, thus offering a wide range of configurations. Indeed, almost anything is possible, from single workstations through to meeting areas and even microarchitectural cluster solutions.

Space layout

Workbays do without the heaviness that most microarchitectural structures have.

Workbays are suitable for concentrating on individual work – “retreat”. And also for holding meetings with two to four persons – “meet”.

Workbays can be combined to create “meet & retreat” zones of different sizes and functions.

Configuration options

Workbays are available in eight different colours with which to create different work environments – from calming through to stimulating.

The Storage cabinet range can be combined with all Vitra office furniture systems. The cabinets and sideboards of various widths and heights can be combined and complemented, and offer storage space that can be configured in many different ways, as well as easily set up, repositioned and removed. The highly effective acoustic front panels have been proven to reduce the noise level in a room, which facilitates concentration while working. Storage is available as a cabinet and as a sideboard. A locker system is also available.

Vitra has been dedicated to exploring the topic of sitting since 1957. At the beginning of the 1970s, a structural transformation began taking place in the West – an industrial society started turning into a service society. It was only a matter of time before more and more people worked in offices. It was then that Vitra began to focus intently on the office chair and, with its very first design – the Vitramat – even set new industry standards. The goal back then of successfully presenting improved solutions offering technical quality, ergonomics and comfort with every model has remained the same to this day.

Vitramat redefined the office swivel chair with its innovative three-part design, and thanks to its synchronous mechanism, it paved the way for dynamic sitting.

Persona was the first office swivel chair which automatically adjusted the backrest tension to the weight of the user.

The Figura with its colourful and exchangeable covers brought a home-like aesthetic to the office.

With the AC 1 and its special backrest mechanism for a synchronised range of motion, Vitra broke new ground both on a formal and technical level.

HeadLine was developed to facilitate prolonged computer work while leaning back in a chair in a relaxed position.

The ID Chair Concept chairs can be customised in countless ways and now, for the first time, are available with weight-dependant forward tilt.

Antonio Citterio and Vitra applied their more than 25 years of experience developing office chairs in creating the ID Chair Concept range of office swivel chairs. The modular system enables the configuration of the different models, which bring a discreet and elegant design and a wide range of colours into the office. They also offer countless options to meet

individual needs in terms of function, comfort and aesthetics. However, all of the chairs have a common technical and visual basis. This has a positive effect on the overall aesthetics of an environment, as well as on maintenance and service. Ergonomics

ID Air The new ID Air is transparent and discreet, but simultaneously offers a high degree of seating comfort. At first glance, its perforated plastic backrest looks simple, but it serves several purposes: the properties of the material in various zones provides the back with support in varying degrees. It is flexible and ensures freedom of movement, the perforations provide good ventilation for the user’s back, and it is an affordable solution as well.

ID Trim L ID Trim L with its high backrest offers additional support for the neck region and can be used as a management chair.

ID Trim The compact padding of the ID Trim backrest conveys a sense of classic elegance and quality handcraftsmanship. The sandwich construction with integrated lumbar support provides the comfort of an upholstered backrest while being almost as slimline as a mesh backrest – offering an alternative to both of these construction types.

66

Office chairs

A study conducted by the Institute for Biomechanics of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) confirms that the scope of movement of the ID Chairs is fully used. This ensures healthy and dynamic sitting. Special measurements have shown that using the weight-dependent forward tilt position increases muscle activity in the stomach and back, which serves to stabilise the lumbar vertebrae. It was also confirmed that forward tilt results in the movement of the lower spine. This increases the nutrient supply to the ntervertebral discs.

New

ID Trim Cap The new ID Trim Cap sends a clear signal with its hood: please do not disturb! However, ID Trim Cap does not only create a private space visually. The material used, a new kind of fleece, is noise-absorbing. It is on account of these features that ID Trim Cap is an excellent choice for micro concentration zones in open-plan offices.

ID Mesh ID Mesh embodies technical transparency and lightness. The innovative braided fabric fitted over a sleek frame is translucent and open like a net – while also being soft like a thin cushion. With the Green User Agreement, a sustainable service offer for project customers, Vitra discloses the usage costs incurred for service and maintenance. Companies therefore know the purchase price and the cost of usage from the outset and thus the total cost of ownership over the entire period of usage.

1 year

The customer is obligated to use the product properly and to maintain it. In return, Vitra agrees to replace the ID Chairs free of charge in the case of manufacturing or material defects, or to replace any worn parts.

5 years

Four years after signing the Green User Agreement, a service check is performed on the ID Chairs at the customer’s premises. This serves to extent the agreement for another five years.

10 years

The next service check is conducted. The Green User Agreement is extended by another five years.

15 years

The ID Chairs can now be returned to Vitra to be professionally recycled.

ID Soft The fully upholstered backrest ensures a high level of comfort, and its clear lines give ID Soft a formally discreet, unobtrusive appearance.

Pivot, the new office chair by Antonio Citterio, is about 30 cm higher than the standard office chair. This enables the healthy switch between standing and sitting in a spontaneous manner. It is not a work table that is raised or lowered, but instead the user works at a tall work table, and sits on a Pivot, or stands at the table using the tall chair to lean on, depending on the requirements. Teamwork, touching base with colleagues and holding meetings take place at the table – either seated or standing – and always at eye level, facilitating cooperation that is both dynamic and efficient.

The engineer and designer Alberto Meda developed Physix as a universal solution for today’s working world, where easy to use and comfortable office chairs are in demand for workstations, project rooms and many other kinds of work situations. Together with both flexible and fixed elements, Physix explores the possibilities of

70

dynamic sitting in a new way, and the chair functions are intelligently integrated into the construction. At the same time, Meda wanted a chair with a light weight and has created one that with its technical look, lightweight and transparency is easy to “read”. This chair has no secrets.

The office chair Physix is the result of taking a very close look at the materials and production possibilities available today. The flexible plastic frame construction together with an elastic knitted cover and stable mechanical unit made of aluminium, allow Physix to offer an entirely new sitting experience with dynamic freedom of movement and precise synchronous adjustment.

The representative conference table system MedaMorph offers a basic selection of round and rectangular individual tables as well as round and boat-shaped conference tables which feature an intelligently designed system base. This base embodies the basic concept behind the range and

consists of four elements: two types of legs, a star connector and crossbars of variable length. These elements create a modular system, making conference tables of all sizes and shapes possible. Customer preferences in terms of leg room and appearance of the legs can thus be largely accommodated.

The table system Kuubo exudes simple elegance and is suitable for many different kinds of work processes, particularly in teams where open communication is practised. Because it has no predefined purposes, it offers many options and presents no obstacles. Kuubo is ideal as a team centre table, since files can also be stored away in the integrated box compartments and

accessed at any time without interrupting the workflow. With these qualities, Kuubo is ideal for project work in team rooms or business centres where a clear desk policy is in place. It can be used as a workstation with a meeting function, a team table, a conference table, a temporary workplace, a project table, a space for hosting a drinks reception, and much more besides.

The Aluminium Chair is one of the most important furniture designs of the 20th century. It was originally created for a private home in Columbus, Indiana in the US, built by the architects Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard in the middle of the 1950s. When constructing the chair, Charles and Ray Eames opted not to incorporate a seat shell and, instead, stretched fabric or leather between two side pieces made of aluminium. The pieces of fabric or leather were stretched so as to be taut yet resilient. Some of the chairs from the Aluminium and Soft Pad Group which are ideal for office environments are now available in dark chrome with dark chromed aluminium parts. The seat cover comes in Premium leather on both sides and the armrests are also upholstered in high-grade leather. These carefully worked materials present the well-known silhouette of this iconic classic design in a new, contemporary light: the Aluminium Chair Dark Chrome is discreet and looks exceptionally elegant. In addition to Aluminium Chairs EA 105, 107, 108, 117 and 119, the Soft Pad Chairs EA 205, 207, 208, 217 and 219 as well as the Eames Segmented Tables are also available in dark chrome. Together, they create a representative product range for offices and conference rooms.

Charles & Ray Eames

Charles and Ray Eames are both a point of departure and a fixed star. In 1953, Willi Fehlbaum saw an Eames chair in New York and decided to become a furniture manufacturer and to acquire the licence to launch production of the designs in Europe. Since then, the designer couple is ubiquitous at Vitra. Even today, we often ask ourselves, “What would Charles and Ray say?” – be this in connection with products, re-editions, exhibitions, anecdotes, memories, acquiring collector’s items, legal disputes with copyists, research or simply when making important design decisions. It comes as no surprise that the Vitra Design Museum is on EamesStrasse and that the original Eames office was reconstructed at Vitra. Designers and partners Charles and Ray Eames exploited the possibilities of industrialisation in connection with new materials and technologies like no one before or since. But they were more than just engineers. Ray was a painter and Charles was an architect. They were artists who did not see themselves as artists. They solved problems using technical means, accepted material constraints and worked patiently by trial and error until they found a satisfactory solution, and they improved the products over time when use revealed faults. However, all of this does not explain why their products are still so appealing today: the solutions that the Eames found were always artistic and a stroke of genius (although Charles Eames rejected the idea of the genius artist), which made the designs distinguished and inexplicably magical. Even today, decades after they were created, the designs are just as cutting-edge as they were then.

What is a classic?

“A classic is not a classic from the very beginning. It starts by breaking the mould. It doesn’t become a classic by conforming to established norms; instead, it questions these established norms. A classic becomes a classic because it wins the battle: first against the products that already exist and then against all of the new products that it must beat out. A classic comes from a different era and yet is contemporary and current. It is iconic without trying to be iconic. It has the qualities of a piece of art without trying to be art. It is forever fresh. When it was presented for the first time, it was new – and it will stay new until another product breaks the mould and challenges it and questions the established norms. It is important to Vitra to produce these outstanding products from the past until they are no longer relevant. At the same time, we develop products together with the most talented people of our age – in the hope that one of them will one day become a classic.” Rolf Fehlbaum Vitra Chairman

Charles and Ray Eames working on the design of the Aluminium Chair in their workshop in Santa Monica, California around 1958.

Tip Ton

Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby

Tip Ton is a tilting chair fully made of plastic. From the normal position, users can tilt the chair forwards by shifting their weight. This forward tilt sitting position straightens the pelvis and spine. Tip Ton is made entirely of polypropylene. This ensures the longevity of the chair and makes it 100 per cent recyclable. Tip Ton is stackable up to four chairs and comes in eight different colours.

Conference and visitors chairs

97

Tip Ton

98

Conference and visitors chairs

In 2010, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) conducted a study on the degree to which pressure to the spine can be relieved by alternating sitting positions. The results show that shifting between the various sitting positions – i.e. between an upright, a reclining and a forward-tilting position – sets all segments of the lower spine in motion. This both relieves pressure on and increases the nutrient supply

to the intervertebral discs. Tip Ton’s special geometry encourages the user to alternate between the above sitting positions. Moreover, whereas in the past the health benefits of relieving the intervertebral discs where reserved for office chairs, Tip Ton allows users to profit from these benefits in an array of different environments.

“Special is generally less useful than normal” is Jasper Morrison’s guiding principle for a design that is not extraordinary, but rather ‘supernormal’ in appearance and – just like HAL – shows deference to the laws that govern daily life. With HAL, Jasper Morrison has created a new interpretation of the multifunctional shell chair,

Akari Light Sculptures Isamu Noguchi The American Japanese artist and designer Isamu Noguchi started creating the Akari Light Sculptures in 1951. He made a total of 100 models out of shoji paper by hand, designed as table, floor or ceiling lamps. The name he chose for the lamps was “akari”, which in Japanese means brightness and light, and also includes the word for lightness.

Wall Clocks George Nelson In 1950, the US was marked by the firm belief in progress and by the economic boom. With the aim of bringing modern design into American homes, George Nelson designed a range of everyday objects: lamps, clocks and other accessories for the home. Up until the 1970s, Nelson’s design office designed many different models including the “Bubble Lamp” and the “Ball Clock”, which became design icons in the 1950s.

Vitra and the office

Vitra has been dedicated to the topic of office environments and office work for decades. Today, in our digital age, work is done everywhere. Offices are increasingly becoming a meeting point – for teamwork, touching base with colleagues, working on projects and for socialising. And this is why individual workstations are no longer only places for focusing on work tasks in silence as they have been in the past. Instead, they are places for spontaneous communication – other suitable places are used for working individually and for holding meetings. We call this “meet & retreat”, or exchange and withdraw. Offices that want to leverage the opportunities this transformation brings must therefore provide appropriate infrastructures. Vibrant and efficient work environments can be implemented with Vitra. We draw on decades of international experience to continuously set new standards in office concepts. Our innovative products fulfil all demands in terms of ergonomics, durability and flexibility. About Vitra

12 7

Vitra does not see designers simply as contractors, but as authors. The relationship that authors from around the world have with an employer who shares their passion should be based on trust – and this is of essence for product development at Vitra: a synthesis of design freedom, manufacturing know-how and market knowledge. Since the very beginning, when designers such as Eames and Nelson set the benchmarks, this appreciation for cooperation has not changed.

About Vitra

Starting in the 1950s, various manufacturing facilities were built on the Vitra site, most of which were destroyed in a fire in 1981. Since then, a heterogeneous ensemble of contemporary architecture has emerged to form today’s Vitra Campus. The architecture critic Philip Johnson once wrote: “Ever since the Weissenhofsiedlung was established in Stuttgart in 1927, nowhere else in the world has seen the erection of so many structures from such prominent architects in the Western Hemisphere.” And, indeed, what came about was

a collection of purpose-built constructions, the incredible density and quality of which have made the Vitra Campus an attraction for fans of architecture from all over the world. Buildings by Tadao Ando, Richard Buckminster Fuller, Frank O. Gehry, Nicholas Grimshaw, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, Jean Prouvé, SANAA and Álvaro Siza attract thousands of visitors every year and can be experienced on architectural tours. www.vitra.com/campus
