PROTECT YOUR HEAD – IT’S THE ONLY ONE YOU’VE GOT. A bicycle helmet is one of the most important items a rider needs, but 68 % of the bikers in Germany don’t wear one, according to a survey. For sport bike riders, the helmet is typically part of their standard gear. Unfortunately, this is not the case for people who use bikes to get around in the city, although this is where most of the accidents happen. No matter where people ride bikes, Alpina has the right helmet for any need and, drawing on its long-standing experience in helmet production, can optimally address the individual demands of the wide range of bikers. The style of the city biker differs from the style of the mountain biker, and so do the features of the helmets. Through close collaboration with athletes and consumers, Alpina uses a targeted approach to meeting their needs.

OVER MILLIONS OF YEARS ONLY THE BEST MATERIALS, TECHNOLOGIES AND CONSTRUCTIONS HAVE SURVIVED. WE TOOK A CLOSER LOOK AT THE WINNERS OF THE EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS. Leonardo da Vinci was one of the prime fathers who pulled their knowledge out of nature and transferred them into technical development. The winners of evolution have inspired us. What is the road to success? For the key products of the 2014 season, ALPINA looked for such unique structures and translated their ‘generic code’ into helmet constructions according to the motto ‘analyzed, decoded, transferred.’

ANALYZED – the most successful structures have been defined and explored. DECODED – winners´ technologies and materials have been decoded. TRANSFERRED – the knowledge was used for the development of new products.

DEVELOPMENT AND DESIGN

Even a helmet that may appear simple embodies a lot of development, effort and technology that has been invested to make it an attractive, safe and comfortable helmet. Alpina helmets go through every step of their creation process in Germany, from the first sketch to prototyping and through to the finished product. Alpina receives important feedback for optimizing its helmets, not only in terms of safety but also with respect to features and styles, through close cooperation with partners, athletes and the various target groups. Short channels in the development department and personal contact with the users are crucial to making targeted and fast changes to certain details possible. Three to four months after the initial idea and a large number of sketches, the first mock-up is made from casting resin. Afterward, a laser scans thousands of dots from the surface of the resin-cast helmet. This cloud of dots then becomes a three-dimensional model on the CAD computer. The development engineers tilt and turn the model using a mouse and enlarge, reduce or reposition vents on it. Once the newly created helmet has acquired its ultimate shape the graphics designers add color, company logos and decoration in the final process step.

PRODUCTION AND QUALITY

At Alpina, not only helmet development but prototyping well as testing and certification take place in Germany. The finished resin-cast model helmet provides the basis for making pre-production samples and for volume production. The CAD data of the new helmet to be manufactured are sent to the production managers in the company’s own plants where the molds and tools for the complex compression-molding process are made in the first step. Following initial test molding runs, the process continues to be fine-tuned until the optimal result has been achieved. Now, extensive tests are run on the in-house Alpina test bench. All Alpina helmets receive their test seals according to the valid EN 1078 standard. Series production starts as soon as the certificate has been issued. Two years pass between the initial idea and the finished helmet. By contrast, series production takes just a short time: 10 minutes per helmet.

SAFETY IS THE TOP PRIORITY WITH HELMETS. THEREFORE, ALPINA LEAVES NO STONE UNTURNED TO CONTINUALLY IMPROVE SAFETY AND TO DEVELOP NEW TECHNOLOGIES. INMOLD AND TWIN-SHELL HAVE BEEN TOPPED OFF BY ALPINA THIS YEAR WITH POWERFUL ADDITIONAL FEATURES. THE NEW ELEXXION RC AND XC USE THREE NEW TECHNOLOGIES: CONEHEAD™, RIB-FRAME AND A-B-C SYSTEM. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HELMET ACHIEVING OPTIMUM VENTILATION THROUGH LARGER VENTS WITHOUT ANY SACRIFICES IN TERMS OF SAFETY.

RIB-FRAME A cage-like structure that extends across the edges of the EPS framework on the front of the helmet and inside the EPS in the rear. It gives the helmet more stability, allows the construction of bigger vents and a ﬁssured rear and makes it harder for the EPS to break in case of an impact.

A-B-C SYSTEM

The EPS layer in this case consists of two different polystyrene layers of varying densities that are permanently bonded to each other. The interlocking structure of these two layers (Conehead structure) achieves optimum cushioning as well as optimized weight and stability.

A second polycarbonate shell that extends across the entire helmet as a lattice structure between the upper shell and EPS body for additional stiffening. This second shell is inseparably fused with the outer shell and the EPS granulate of the helmet body in the inmold process – for optimum pressure distribution in the event of a crash.

The first active air flow guidance system for efficient temperature management. Fresh air is actively aspirated toward the head through the specially shaped surface of the optimally configured vents and the warm air at the back is dissipated toward the outside.

In inmold production technology, the polycarbonate upper helmet shell is fused with the EPS granulate of the helmet body under high heat and pressure. This creates an inseparable, large-area bonding of the upper and lower shell. Advantage: The helmet is very light yet extremely sturdy.

The inner shell of every ALPINA helmet is made of HI-EPS (High Expanded Polystyrene). It consists of microscopic air pockets that optimally absorb the impact forces that act on the helmet in a crash. Despite its optimum protective effect HI-EPS allows extra-thin wall thicknesses and slim helmet shapes to be achieved.

ALPINA developers invest a lot of time and energy in continually improving the ventilation of our bike helmets. By using a wind tunnel tested conﬁguration of the vents our engineers achieve a “Venturi” effect inside the helmet. It cools the head, reduces perspiration and increases performance.

PERFECT FIT... Even the safest helmets are worn with displeasure if they miss the mark in terms of fit and comfort. Therefore, ergonomics receive equal attention as safety technologies in further developments. Time-tested and thus continuing to be used is the Alpina Run-System, a rotatable control knob at the back of the head that makes it possible to adjust the helmet to the head with millimeter accuracy. Optimum and comfortable fit, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an MTB or a city helmet â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Alpina helmets stay right where they belong without interfering!

The top-end model of the new ALPINA adjustment systems for the back of the head has two large “head rests” to the left and right of the central, re-designed rotatable control knob. Both these two wing-shaped pads and the control knob itself are made of a two-component mix consisting of plastics and rubber. As of 2014, the Run System Ergo Pro will be available in colors matching the helmet.

Like its big brother, RUN SYSTEM ERGO PRO, ALPINA’s second-most sophisticated helm adjustment system features the pressure-distributing “head rests” plus the new control knob with enhanced ease of use. The only difference to the top-end model: The wing-shaped pads and the control knob are made of plastics.

A helmet can only protect the wearer as effectively as it stays in its optimal position in case of a crash. The retention of the two under-ear straps plays a crucial part in this. ALPINA’s “Y-Clip” system guarantees adjustment with millimeter-accurcy – in a matter of seconds.

The third adjustment system in the line-up, RUN SYSTEM ERGO, does not use the “head rests” of its two big brothers. Instead it comes with the newly developed rotatable control knob made of the two-component mix – for secure grip anytime the helmet is adjusted to the rider’s head.

Riders using their bikes for short trips to the supermarket do not necessarily need a highly sophisticated adjustment system. For such needs, our RUN SYSTEM CLASSIC sufﬁces. A simple and rugged control knob keeps the helmet where it belongs: on the rider’s head.

Proven a hundred-thousandfold and used in all ALPINA bike helmets: Our famouos strap buckle with a red push button and multi-step automatic locking mechanism. ERGOMATIC can be operated with just one hand – uphill the strap can be loosened and tightened downhill – and is prevented from opening on its own in a crash.

The CUSTOM FIT system features three-way inclination adjustment for perfect adaptation to the back of the head.
