Who We Are For over 43 years IV Publisher (headquartered in Switzerland) has been providing communities around the world with publications about safety, health and protection for their homes, neighborhoods, towns, municipalities, etc. in order to decrease the amount of child related accidents. We partner with local Police, Fire, and Civil Organizations to help alleviate their cost of producing such materials. All of our publications are then edited by our partners (Police, Fire and Civil Organizations) to ensure our articles, laws and safety tips are accurate and up to date. It also enables us to reach out and help educate more people in each community. Our passion for safety fuels us to reach out to everyone in need and/or just needs a refresher. The publications we publish provide important safety information and guidelines. We then distribute them throughout communities via brochures, pamphlets, send newsletters to subscribers, seminars, webinars, coloring books magazines and soon mobile applications free of cost. Through our partners efforts in association with our publications and the SUPPORT of the LOCAL COMMUNITY we have helped dramatically reduce the amount of child related accidents in every area we have distributed materials. Our ultimate goal is to educate and provide more awareness in order to prevent accidents from happening.

Important Safety Tips Around a School Bus When your child is traveling to and from the bus stop they are more at risk then when actually riding on the bus. There are an estimated 23,000,000 students nationwide that depend on a bus to make it to and from school, we wanted to remind/inform everyone of some of the tips that will help increase your child’s school bus safety as well as your own (when driving near a school bus). Children  Arrive at least 5 minutes before the bus reaches your location.  Upon arrival of the bus, stand away from the curb 6 feet (3 huge steps) back.  When standing in line ensure that you are away from the street.  When crossing in front of the bus, stay at least 10 feet (5 huge steps) ahead of the bus before you cross. Be sure that the bus driver can see you and you can see them.  To avoid falling, utilize the handrails when entering and exiting the bus.  Never walk behind the bus.

 Before backing/pulling out of your driveway, parking spot or garage watch out for children traveling to school.  Drive extremely alert in neighborhoods with school zones.  Slow down and watch for children walking, biking, etc to school.  Always slow down near bus stops as late children tend to dart into the street without watching for traffic.  Take time to learn, obey and teach the school bus laws in your state. Flashing signal Lights Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is getting ready to stop. Red flashing lights indicate a stopped bus and that children will be exiting the bus. All vehicles MUST STOP until the bus begins to move again and the lights are off. Even if your child does not ride the bus to school everyday it is extremely important to help teach them or any other child you know because it could help save their lives. Please remember to contact your local authorities for the most recent laws regarding school bus safety in your state.

When at a bus stop, always wait patiently in a single line. It allows the bus driver to properly see everyone. 24

manufacturer. Rear-facing seats provide the maximum protection for the head, neck and spine. Also, please close attention as the it is extremely important for rear-facing children to ride in the back seat away from the airbag. When the time has come and your children have outgrown their rear-facing seat, move them to a forward-facing car seat. Remember children should remain in the back away from airbags. Ensure that you tighten and lock in place the lower seat anchors and also attach the top anchor. Continue using the top anchor until your child weighs 40 lbs. Most car seat labels will explain exactly how much your child can weigh and still use the lower anchors and top tether. Until then, check both your child restraint and vehicle manuals to see if you can go beyond the weight limit for the top tether. If the both agree to a higher weight, use your judgment to follow their instructions.

Car Seat Safety Tips Everyday engineers are constructing new products to help keep our children safer. Unfortunately, those products are only as good as our ability to follow instructions and recommendations. Car seats for instance are no different. A new study suggest that 3 out of every 4 parents are NOT installing their child’s car seat correctly. What, how can this be? In order to help answer some of your questions we have compiled a list of tips in order to help guide you. Choosing the Direction (Front or Rear Facing) Having your baby in a rearfacing car seat (usually until 2 years old) will offer the best protection. You should be able to find the exact height and weight limit on the side or back of your car seat. If you can not find the information, you should contact the

Children can generally remain in some forward-facing car seats until they reach 65-80 lbs. (depending on the car seat limits). Remember to-

Know Your Car Seat’s History Like almost all airbags, once a car seat has been in a crash it is vital that you replace it to ensure the safety of your child. If you are buying one used, from a garage sale, thrift store or from the internet. Ask for the history of the car seat. If they are unsure, it is better not buy it. Instead try purchasing one new or from someone you know and trust.

check the car seat label to find the exact measurements and requirements. When it is time you can discontinue use of the lower anchors or the top tether when your child reaches the limits set by your car seat and car manufacturers. You MUST read the manual to know about these limits. At that time you will use the seat belt that goes through the car seat instead. Seat belts are designed to protect extremely heavy adults as well as children who have outgrown their boosters seats.

Installing Correctly

READ the Label of your Child’s Car Seat

Using the inch Test. When you finally have your car seat installed, give it a good pull by the base of where the seat belt or anchors are. If you can move it front to back or side to side with more than an inch, you need to tighten it. Pinch Test. Ensure the harness is tightly buckled and the harness was installed correctly (check you car seat manual). With the chest clip placed at armpit level, pinch the strap at your child’s shoulder. If you are unable to pinch any excess webbing, you are in the clear.

Before you make a purchase or use a car seat that you used for another child, ensure the label of the car seat meets your child’s age, weight and height. Car seats have expiration dates. So if you are buying a car seat used or it is a hand me down double check to ensure that it is still safe. Child Car seat inspection station locator: http://www.safercar.gov/cpsAp p/cps/index.htm

You never no what might jump out in front of the car causing the driver to slam on the breaks! 33

Visit Us Online www.ivpublisher.com Both the seat belt and lower anchors are sufficient to anchor in your child’s car seat. Do not use them both at the same time. Instead, choose one or the other. (most older cars do not have the anchors and you will need to use the seatbelt). If you have concerns, questions or problems installing your child’s seat, contact a local certified child passenger safety technician in order to double check your work, answer your questions or address your concerns.

Are your child’s shoulders above the car seat’s top harness? Are the tops of your child’s ears above the car seat? Generally, if your child can still fit in the harness and is within the height and weight limits, you should continue to use the car seat to provide ultimate protection for your child. Car Seat for Every Child Even though it may be tempting, PLEASE refrain from holding your children in your arms while traveling in a car. It is not a suitable seat belt for them and you are putting your child’s life at risk. Every child needs to be in a proper car seat suitable to their needs.

Take the Time to Check Your Car Seat A recent study suggest 73% of car seat are not used or installed correctly. Walk through the car seat checklist again to help keep your child safe. Once again, take the time to contact a CERTIFIED CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY TECHNICIAN

Toys Even though it can be a very effective way of keeping your child entertained, make sure if you were to become involved in an accident your child’s toy will not harm them. Any object small, loose, etc. can be extremely dangerous and possibly injure your child in a crash.

Booster Seat

Only take the next step to a booster seat if you can answer yes to the following questions: Does your child exceed the car seat’s height or weight limits?

34

You should never ride in back of a truck because it is so dangerous.

35

Setting the Example Every time you buckle up and show your children that you too have a seat belt, it provides positive feedback to your child and they too will want to be safe like Mommy/Daddy. Remember that buckling up is the single most important thing a family can do to stay safe in the car.

Leaving Your Child in the Car Please do not leave your child/children alone inside of the car alone. Not even for a minute. Too often parents are tempted by a sleeping child to quickly run a quick errand. But please note, the temperature inside of a car can rise 20 degrees rather quickly and also because a child’s body heats up faster than that of an adult you are risking your the chance of heat stroke.

To ensure the highest protection of your child we recommend you visit a local Certified Child Passenger Technician to help install your car seats correctly.
