Aside from the Univeristy of Kansas, Lawrence is home to another important educational institution, the Haskell Indian Nations University. After a site visit to the campus where we explored the current welcome center and the surrounding urban conditionsm, we were tasked with creating a new cultural center that would serve as a place of gathering for the various indigionous cultures represented. The knowledge and insight of the history of the school aided us in our design evolutions as we strove to connect indgionous themes and valus within our architecture.

| DESIGN CONCEPT

My main design concept for this project was focused on the concept of “Sitting in a Circle.” This idea came from the name of a chapter in the indiginous book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. In the chapter, she delves into her experience with gathering around her native community and the sumbolic and sentimental value that it holds for not only her tribe but for many other indigious cultures as well. I felt this concept could resonate with many of the different students that come from unique backgrounds.

This project took our studio to the West end of the KU campus, where we were tasked to design a Columbarium and Chapel for Pioneer Cemetary. The focusfor our designs was to learn how to incorporate and add on to an already pre-existing site and work with what’s already there, as well as to explore structure with masonry. After many iterations, I came up with a design that integrates well into the landscape and recieves plenty of sunlight from it’s south side.

| DESIGN CONCEPT

For my concept, I wanted to focus on the circulation and the experience of the individual as they moved throughout the columbairum terraces, descending one layer at a time. This stepped design was then reflected in the architecture of the chapel.

Moving away from the Lawrence Campus, this site had us visit a parking lot located next to the Merc Co-Op in downtown Kansas City, Kansas. Here, we had to create our biggest project yet; a vetical urban farm that used aeroponic towers to grow food for the local community. This project had us handling parking, shipping, employee, public and more types of spaces that we’ve never experienced before. Our final model and board also had to be accompanied with a physical section model.

| DESIGN CONCEPT

The form of the building was determined by a concept of growth and the journey of the food. The plants begin in the growing area in the west section of the building and it transitions into mature growing towers in the center of the building. The final part of the building marks the transtion into the Merc Co-Op on the east side of the building, all of which is visible from the north side of the building where pedestrians can gather. Catwalks are featured to better view this journey while also serving a functional purpose.

This project required a detailed section model that demonstrates the structure of the building. My the building. The catwalk surrounding the outside of the growing area becomes clearly visible within

Lastly, besides architecture, I’ve always carried a deep passion for art and have refined my skills in various mediums, including graphite pencils, charcoal, watercolor, paint, and colored pencils. These pieces were apart of my sustained investigation for AP Studio Art, in which I recieved a score a 5.
