It is always a pleasure for me to see UP alumni come together in a shared spirit of camaraderie, celebration and commitment to the UP principles of honor, excellence and compassionate service. I congratulate both the outgoing set of UPAAGLA officers, led by President Mutch Carino, on the outstanding job you have done in steering the UPAAGLA through these past two years, and the incoming set of officers led by President Ethel G. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) at Ang Bahay ng Alumni in UP Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines, I extend my warmest felicitations and best wishes to the new officers, as well as all the other members, of the UPAA-Greater Los Angeles (UPAAGLA) chapter on the occasion of your Installation Ceremony and Endowment Fundraising Gala today. I am highly impressed by the Vision of UPAAGLA: “To strategically build a culture of giving and raise the profile of UP alumni in Greater Los Angeles.” It is heart-warming to note that, despite having made your second homes in faraway North America, you have been able to congregate and form an organization that is intensely loyal to the Alma Mater and endowed with a strong sense of magnanimity for the welfare of mga iskolar ng bayan, which you once were. I heartily congratulate you for having successfully formed an expectely dynamic “Dream Team” – your 2019-2021 Board of Directors – with all of its members committed to work together towards your vision for the next two years to take UPAAGLA to the next level. As it were, we all come from the same forge or foundry – our Beloved UP. OUTGOING PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Alumni, Family and Friends, Two years ago, our team of 25 officers and directors set out to do our best in creating and organizing events and activities to continue UPAAGLA’s success in reaching out to the community and at the same time raising funds for the benefit our beloved alma mater. Together, we accomplished those goals and proudly report below the results of our efforts. LEND A LAPTOP PROGRAM The “Lend a Laptop” program is the brainchild of UP President Danilo L Concepcion. This program essentially lends to needy and deserving students a laptop computer from the library. It is the first program of its kind and UPAAGLA will be its first and hopefully a perennial sponsor. With the assistance of UP Executive Vice President Ted Herbosa, UPAAGLA will be purchasing and donating twelve (12) laptops. THESIS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM - UP College of Engineering and UP Engineering Research Development Foundation, Inc. UP College of Engineering Dean Rizalinda De Leon and UPERDFI (UP Engineering Research Development Foundation, Inc.) President Chato Calderon presented to UPAAGLA several programs that they referred to as “In Search for the Unicorn.” Their efforts were made possible by UPAAGLA members who belong to the Beta Epsilon Fraternity. Briefly, programs were designed to tap into the genius and creativity of engineering students that may result in a technological discovery that will benefit locally or globally. We committed to support five (5) students in their research and writing their thesis for the “unicorn” every year for the next 5 years. UPAAGLA will be presenting a Deed of Donation to UPCOE and UPERDFI. It is our hope that UPAAGLA will continue to support this program for years to come. UPAAGLA EQUIPMENT As UPAAGLA has become more active and self reliant with its activities, it is necessary for UPAAGLA to purchase it own PA system, laptop and a projector for its own exclusive use. These future purchases, estimated at $2,000, were recommended and approved by the board. Lastly, we are pleased that over and above these donations, we still managed to leave behind extra dollars to add to the general funds. To the officers and directors who served UPAAGLA with me honorably and selflessly, to our sponsors, family and friends who with their love and support made our work meet and exceed our expectations, my eternal gratitude and respect.

Greetings and welcome to all my fellow alumni, family, friends and colleagues! Thank you so much for joining us to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of UPAAGLA and to celebrate all U.P. alumni in Los Angeles! I am so thrilled and very grateful that we have accomplished our goals for this evening’s stellar celebration. We achieved record-breaking attendance and funds raised from our biennial event! This is by far the largest and most diverse U.P. alumni gathering in Los Angeles, CA. The theme of our 2019 Gala is “Taking U.P. to the Future!” Indeed, we, at UPAAGLA, are committed to helping our alma mater do that in our own special way. In order to achieve this, we need to take our alumni association to the next level. We will do this through developing and improving our internal processes so we can build our alumni network; engage more alumni; increase the profile of fellow alums in the community; and, most especially, build a robust endowment fund to assist our beloved alma mater in their academic and capital improvement campaigns. The 2019 Installation Ceremony & Endowment Fundraising Gala kicks off a very exciting two-year journey for the amazing and dedicated 2019-2021 UPAAGLA leadership team. Months of preparation led to this special night, which, actually, was a blessing because this journey allowed us to strengthen our team. Congratulations and kudos to my fellow volunteer alumni leaders, the 2019 – 2021 UPAAGLA Executive Officers and Board of Directors! We have accomplished what was deemed to be impossible, plus more! My journey leading up to this, from getting elected to becoming a UPAAGLA Board Member in 2015 and President-Elect in 2017, has been the most adventurous one that I have ever taken.
