Vascular Chair

Furniture Design

Remember how surprised we were, when in elementary school we did the experiment of putting celery into red ink, and found how the vascular tissues of plants packed together? If we broke celery with our hands and exposed its section with rugged irregularity, would these lively red lines surprise us more? Vascular Chair】 exposes intentionally the normally hidden structures of objects without covering them with flat surfaces, but beautifying them to make them stand out; human body lines are also acquired to provide the users with not only visual enjoyments but also comfortable using experiences.

Try to cut all kinds of vegetables and fruits, observating their sections, there will be a variety of looking forming from different directions and ways of cutting.

When It Comes to Furniture...

01 Modeling Shape & Style Evolution The shape originally comes from the looks of plants like celery and lotus roots, which have apparent tubal tissue. Then cutting the structure with the curved fit human body. Afterwards, I linked each point of intersection with straight line to make it more ordered out of the chaos.

Madol Making I use red sutures to pipe and highlight the edges. The main construction is composed of many cubes. There’re velcros over the fringes of the whole chair. The underlapped paper board is covered with deep blue emulsion paint. Besides, each edge is stuck by red knitting wool which emphasizing it. The chair just looks like a plant stem that soaks into the red ink, the vascular bundles are filled with red color.

The originally idea comes from imagination of visual effect, bringing natural scene into house, creating a new type of scenario.Vascular Chair】 use lines as surfaces, and soft materials as sharp visaul effect, bringing houseware a whole new life. The users can imagine a lot.

Before Design

This is a documentary about visual conversion and connection in the space. This city is too crowded for people to have their own spaces entirely, so they tend to go to coffee bars for private spaces of their own. Coffee bar is a special place, you can have a private space that belongs to you temporarily. With differences between light, walls, windows, furnishings and seats, coffee bar could be separated into different types of independent spaces.

02 What You See from Things You See We started our research from a coffee bar, LeChat, discovering that those so called "indivisual" spaces are not really alone or be unrelated to each other.

Starting from this plan, what we got is not only a route map of the sight but an interwoven mesh of the sight, relating to each other in the whole space. People are connected when....

1

they view and take postcards;

2

they put or take their belongings;

3

chat with friends;

4

see others始 reflections on the glass of the fridge;

5

peep through the bookcase;

6

watch outside the windows;

7

watch inside the windows;

8

watch outside then inside the windows;

9

watch through the bar;

10 11 12

8

see others始 reflections on the screens of their own laptops; see others始 reflections on the screen of others始 laptops; watch menu on the blackboard.

We cannot see the whole thing from single aspect, so we constantly change our viewpoint and perspectives.Perhaps when we consider the same thing with more points of view, we can be more understanding of the core values .

This is the final installation: Coffee bar gave the impression of warm, bright and vivid feeling, and we tried to discover a typical material represented the coffee bar and applied it on the device. This device can be rotated but cannot be seen completely from single side. Only understanding it from different perspectives can we see it completely into the inner core.

Furniture Design

The concept of “rotating” and “vision” came from the installation, 【vision rotating】. People go to coffee bars for experiencing and enjoying different types of spaces, but how about setting changeable spaces in our own houses? House Interior configuration is mostly allocated according to functionality. However, in densely-populated cities in Taiwan, especially crowded Taipei, most families do not have enough space so they need to use single space efficiently for more than one purpose, such as, dinning room for having dinner and working or studying. In the other hand, the furniture in the house is not easy to be replaced or redecorated frequently. I imagine there might be a piece of furniture, which users can toggle its using scenarios and functions through simple actions.

Rotative Sofa】 provides spaces for two different scenarios. To own personal space, you can turn the wide part upwards, making the sofa surround the upper body to create space of privacy. You can also turn the wide part downwards, creating another sense of comfort. By simple rotation, users can adjust to different ways of use in certain situations.

City Renewing

CHANGE TAIPEI

With the changing times, the life functions in the city have been transforming. There’s a square overpass lies in the intersection of Xinsheng S. Rd. and Heping E. Rd. The zebra crossings were set up when the overpass was rebuilt several years ago. They were not removed after the rebuilding and therefore the passersby don’t cross the road by the renewed overpass anymore. We were thinking what if the overpass are not being used to cross the road, maybe its function would be changed.

03 After fieldwork, we point out the problems in the Xin-Sheng South Road and He-Ping Road intersection to the NTU doorway. After discussing, we propose three main problems. 1.Situation of bicycles and passersby is terrible. 2.The space under the viaduct is used unproperly. 3.Many public spaces in this area are unused. Following this three point, we proposed the design concepts to let the unused spaces to be used again and full of fun.

始 HERE!

02

This square shape overpass is a special landmark here but few people walks onto it. People rather walk through the crowded traffic than walk on the overpass.

Surrounded by the Daan Forest Park and many churches for different religions, the skycafe could be a place for people to rest and gather. So the unused public facility would become a serviceable space.

We set it as a hostel for backpackers so the price is 100 NT dollar per day. In order to decrease the expense of the decoration and furniture, the rooms of 【HuiHui】 is just like exhibition spaces for young artists and designers. They could decorate the rooms by their works like holding solo exhibitions and change every quarter. The unused overpass would become a new landmark in this area, attracting people to raise the business nearby and providing young Taiwanese artists and designers a platform showing their works to the world.

Lattice 窗花

Furniture Design

Lattice window, as essential decorative elements in Chinese classical architecture, often be used in windows or decoration of garden views. There are a variety of styles including geometric shapes, flowers, animals, landscapes, figures and folk tales, etc. Besides, the variety of forms have different meanings, including the status of the owner's identity, cultural virtue, sense of aesthetics, and symbol of wealth, etc. For example, ‘bat’ stands for ‘fortune’, as the same pronunciation in Chinese. Plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum represent different moral virtue as we call “four gentlemen” in Chinese. Lattice windows have rich culture and fine workmanship, which provide people with high visual enjoyment can be collected as well. Most ancient lattice window were made by stone, brick, wood, ceramics and steel wire. With time went by, it was gradually replaced by the use of reinforced concrete. However, the urban jungle nowadays is filled with skyscrapers, and modern architecture tends to use simple glass windows or cage-shaped iron window frame. The beautiful traditional lattice windows is disappearing from our lives.

04 Research

The picture above shows the classical lattice made of ceramics and cement. Taiwan has been ruled by many countries such as Spain, the Netherlands and Japan, as a result the style of lattice windows reveal cross cultural characteristics with Western and Eastern cultures as the following picture:

These are cage-shaped window frames commonly be seen in cities of Taiwan:

Classical lattice and modern architecture exterior have been incompatible with each other, so what should we do to keep this beautiful cultural assets? How about moving lattice windows into the interior and making it part of home decoration? I made a screen with lattice window and simplified some classical patterns into simple geometric shapes, breaking traditional laws by using multiple units or sizes to blend classical and modern style.

04 Another Side... On the other side of lattice window, with the entire surface of lycra, shows the flat surface when it is not used. When storing items from the other side of lattice window, the opposite side stretched with lycra can show the outline of objects, just like a piece of large art installation changing its appearance with different objects every day.

Lattice】 is a accommodating screen characterised with ancient and modern style, which retains the traditional beauty with modern ideas in order to deliver the culture of lattice with a new style.

Time Heals

Telephone Design

Death is the inevitable part of human life, no matter how much one miss the dead, it would be a burden for both the dead and live ones, because the dead is not hoping to bring his/her family and friends so much suffering. I hope to make a product that could keep these people company who is experiencing the death of their friends or family. As time goes by, this product will also change as if to remind people, “hey, time will make everything change, and you should change as well! Do not feel grievous any more!

05 Scenario time went on...

feeling hurt...

not hurt anymore!

I decided to design a phone since I hope to help people heal up by interacting more with others, and finding happiness from others. This is not for people to quickly forget the heartbroken memory but to help them to face the sorrow calmly.

Material

I chose "wax" as the main material for its changeable quality over time. Body temperature, friction and collision could make the sharp angle of wax gradually disappear and become rounded.

The crystal on Time Heal】 is just like the memories accumulated from the past, and time will heal the hurt of memories, However the memories will not disappear but the pain will do.

Rehabilitation Ball

Rehabilitation Equipment Design

To do rehabilitation, patients have to repeate the same action again and again, and they needs different equipments for different parts of body. This rehabilitation ball is mainly designed for stroke patients. Stroke patients sometimes have problems with stretching their arms and legs due to abnormal muscle tension. Repeating more stretching exercise can help to prevent this kind of problems. Besides, patients should also keep constantly on getting exercise to maintain physiological functions, keeping the ability of taking care of themselves, and training the harmony of arms and legs.

06 Observation Nowadays there are plenty of “homemade” rehabilitation tools. For example, some patients directly put their hands into a pair of roller skate shoes and slide on the table, others may push and pull heavy boxes repeatedly on the table or stretch with a towel hanging on the towel rack, etc. These kinds of rehabilitation tools are so rough that inspire me to integrate all these functions together.

It is also considered that if the patient has one hand with inconvenience, 【Rehabilitation Ball】 can easily help this hand stretch by the pushing power of the other normal hand. In addition, patients do not need to rely on a wall or shelf during the stretching exercise. What they need to do is to keep it on legs or fixed it by feet. This design will make patients’ rehabilitation process more comfortable.

06

T

T

T T

Rehabilitation Ball】 integrates a variety of hand rehabilitation by the use of different ways. It is like a sphere puzzle, combined with different components. Rehabilitation equipment is no longer fragmented with multiple items, it can also be very simple and elegant.

Raptor

Gaming Mouse Design

“Velociraptor,” the scientific name of raptor, means “agile thief” in Latin, and is the main image of this mouse. Raptor’s second toe has a large sickle-shaped claw which can kill prey in the vital organs. Raptors in the movie 《Jurassic Park》 even trace their prey by knocking the ground with second toe to feeling the vibrations of the prey. This image is compared to the fast pace as players playing FTP (free-to-play) games with their index fingers clicking on mouses.

Biological Simulation 【Raptor】 has many bionic symbols, all curves from different parts of the mouse come from the form of claws. The hand gripping part is designed with rubber material that comes from the skin of raptors’ back. Unlike those sharp form of gaming mouse, 【Raptor】 bionic symbol give players and mouse itself a more natural and wild image.

Concept Model

We are keeping running this project with Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. and we are having several meeting about CMF so it is being fine-tunined now. The pictures above show the first model we made.

07

【Raptor】 fits to players with claw grip when undergoing fast-paced FTP (free-to-play) games. Players with claw grip have to arch their hands, making hands look like claws. With higher back part of 【Raptor】, it provides stable support for players’ hands. Furthermore, there are concave surfaces on both sides of the mouse, allowing players to hold and fix the mouse be firmly in hands for quickly lift and move the mouse. The front part is in gentle curvature which can reduce the contact area between fingers and mouse, avoiding accidental drag and mis-hits, so users could click left and right keys more quickly and sensitively.

Color Plan & Function Due to cost budget, we simplified its color to nearly all black, then equipped it with somce functional button including DPI switch, sniper mode button, and Marco button. Raptor】 also equipped with weights for users to counterbalance weight by their preferences or habits.

Urakuen 有楽園

Brand Design

This project is the virtual subsidiary brand of “任天堂 Nintendo,” 【 有楽園 Urakuen】. The name of “任天堂 (Nintendo)” is combined with “天に任せる (all determined by God)” and ”天堂 (paradise).” 【有楽園 Urakuen】 was named with the same sentence pattern, combining with “楽 を有ける (enjoy pleasure) and “楽 園 (wonderland).” 【Urakuen】 makes household products as the target and the main design purpose is to make more fun in our daily life. The slogan of this brand is “Life is a game!” 【Urakuen】 concentrates on amusing features of their products and shows a interesting brand image. Letter “K” in the LOGO is a chiar. There is a hand drawing “surprise” stuff coming out on the chair, which means “the chair is not just a chair,” because products of 【Urakuen】 are always surprising!

08

Website I made a website to present 【Urakuen】. First I chose some existing products that fit in with the spirit of 【Urakuen】. The most special part of this website is in the “Product information,” in which there are several products coming with little pixel games. The website visitors would be like in little adventures, and they need to help the character in the games to get through some problems in their life. Following the concept of Nintendo “Game is Life,” the slogan of Urakuen is “Life is a game,” which aims to encourage people to live a relaxed and happy life.

:ParanoID

Editorial Design

“Wild things, paranoids maybe; yet, you know eventually...:P” “:ParanoID” is a bilingual year book of class 2012, Shih-Chien University, Industrial Design Dept. It was the 20th anniversary of the department as well so this publication inclydes not only the works of the graduation class but also the history of the department, such as design awards nd international workshops. “Paranoid” means doing a particular thing repeatedly. “ID” is the abbreviation of “industrial design.” And the mischievous emoticon “:P” shows enjoyment and craziness out of our conscientious paranoia.

09

09

A large numbers of elements by hand drawing and crafting could be found in the book. The crafts indicates the designers’ insistence of designing into the smallest details from concept forming to the final model making. On the other hand, many delicate lines are used to make the department’s history more classic and exquisite.
