Dear Friends of Maddux, Thank you for joining us this evening to celebrate our unique program, our nurturing professionals, our amazing students, and our wonderful families! We are so grateful to those parents who helped make tonight’s event so special. Our Chair, Shari Abramson, and the entire Gala Committee, have invested enormous amounts of time and energy to support our success. We offer our deepest appreciation. Students in each classroom have created special canvasses which will be showcased in our live auction. For more details on these one-of-a kind pieces of art, please see pages 6 and 7. I hope that you enjoy tonight’s video – “Welcome Back” – which features several Maddux alumni. Talking with these graduates, hearing their stories, viewing past yearbooks and photos, and witnessing how they have grown is an experience I will always cherish. Tonight’s Fund-A-Cause will support our plans to build a new playground this summer. We’re honored that so many of you have partnered with us on this project, and we look forward to extending invitations to visit the new site in September. We are thrilled to have this evening with all of you and hope you enjoy the opportunity to relax, build friendships, and support our beloved community. In appreciation,

Andrea Mullins, Director The Maddux School

FUND-A-CAUSE

There’s no doubt about it – our playground serves many useful learning opportunities each day at Maddux. Plus, it’s just fun, plain and simple. We’re thrilled about building a new playground for our students. Here’s a sneak-peak at our new equipment. With your support this evening, we’ll be able to make a significant financial commitment to The Maddux School Playground Fund. Please remain at your tables following our Live Auction to participate in our Fund-A-Cause and prepare to raise your bid number.

LIVE AUCTION ITEMS

Pre- K – Splatter Art

Kindergarten – DC Skyline

This priceless one-ofa-kind masterpiece was created by our Pre-K class. Egg shells were filled with paint and the students took turns throwing the eggs at the canvas. The students explored the work of artist Jackson Pollock while using different tools and media. They worked on motor control, bilateral coordination, cooperation and turn-taking to create this spectacular 30” x 40” canvas.

Our Kindergarten class studied Washington, DC and its landmarks this year. The class then created this colorful DC Skyline painting. In the style of George Seurat’s pointillism, each student chose a paint color for his/her fingerprint. This beautiful piece, on a crisp white 36” x 18” canvas, captured every student’s contribution all of which came together to create a unique masterpiece. The canvas would be a beautiful addition to your house or office, certain to attract your friends’ attention and envy!

1st Grade – Modern Heart This mixed media is the result of a true collaboration from our 1st grade classroom! The result - a beautiful Modern Heart textured piece inspired by Midwestern artist Jim Dine. Our students took turns gluing tissue paper squares inside a traced heart using different shades of pink and red oil pastels. They also chose water colors in blue and purple hues to paint the backdrop to make the heart really pop! We know you will this as much as they do!

1st/2nd Grade – Colorful Abstract Landscape Art This colorful work by the 1st/2nd grade class is a 3D landscape inspired by the work of Bolivian artist, Sonia Falcone. The class cooperated and collaborated to create this amazing, one-of-a-kind abstract canvas using a variety of vibrant tissue paper rolled and crumbled to perfection. While creating together, the class also employed their fine motor skills and knowledge of geography. They learned about South America and discovered that the artist chose to use many colors in her work in order to help people feel hope and happiness. This unique masterpiece is sure to bring hope and happiness to whomever is lucky enough to take it home!

PRINCIPAL FOR A HALF DAY Calling all future leaders! Your Maddux student will serve as principal for a half day, working side by side with Ms. Mullins with a check list of arranged meetings and events. This is a great opportunity where they will learn how decisions are made and the value of collaboration. Activities will be personalized to the individual child for a meaningful experience. In the past, one child attended a meeting reviewing technology ideas with Ms. Mullins and our IT department. In another, the “Principal for a half day joined Ms. Mullins to read to a younger class and help lead an activity. Other options could include meetings related to the new playground, helping to order books or art supplies. We promise this one-of-a-kind personalized experience will be an ever-lasting awesome memory for your child!
