Attractions & Museums Monticello in Fall Glory From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico and the breathtaking displays of fall foliage, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of the Independence, Thomas Jefferson, Courtesy Thomas Jefferson Foundation/Monticello dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third United States president, Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State, among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and the Tower of London, Monticello is on the list of World Heritage Sites known the world over as cherished pieces of human history and of great universal value. As you tour the home, you’ll find his clever inventions abound, from the Great Clock in the hallway that ingeniously marks the days and hours with a pulley system to the polygraph copying machine he designed for his famous letters. You’ll also learn more about Jefferson’s family and the enslaved community along Mulberry Row. Kids will love the Mountaintop Hands-On Activity Center, and everyone should set aside time to stroll the grounds of this famous plantation and admire the glorious gardens. Those interested in the history of gardening at Monticello may glean insight into Jefferson’s passion with the two-hour Revolutionary Garden tour on Wednesdays and Saturdays through October. The tour includes a chance to meet the professional garden staff and participate in seasonal gardening activities, such as planting, harvesting and sampling crops ranging from asparagus to baby root vegetables. Be sure to stop by on September 11-12 for the ninth annual Heritage Harvest Festival on Monticello’s West Lawn to celebrate Jefferson’s “greatest service” and the amazing legacy he left behind as a gardener. Here you’ll taste delicious heirloom fruits and vegetables and learn about organic gardening and seed-saving. If you visit on September 11, you’ll be able to enjoy the Beekman Boys, this year’s headlining performance, and you’ll be able to partake in the pre-festival workshops on such topics as “Vinegar-making Basics,” “Grow Your Own Ginseng and Other Woodland Botanicals,” “Making Fresh Ricotta Cheese” and more. No matter when you tour, visiting Monticello is always a special event.

Attractions & Museums More Colonial Riches When visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for Ash Lawn-Highland, the elegant plantation home of President James Monroe, our fifth president and Jefferson’s good friend. Just 2.5 miles down the road from Thomas Jefferson’s “Little Mountain,” Ash Lawn is a working farm with more than 500 acres of Michie Tavern by Robin Bethke land and a home for the performing arts. Visitors are invited to tour the historic presidential residence, explore the amazing boxwoods and learn more about President Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth. For those seeing Monticello and Ash Lawn-Highland on the same day, the perfect lunch break can be found at the 18th-century Michie Tavern, just down the road. Established in 1748 by Colonel William Michie, the tavern was a wonderful gathering spot for locals and travelers alike. Another presidential property in the area to explore is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolly Madison. While visiting the 2,750-acre estate and mansion, you’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological dig sites, breathtaking gardens, cooking demonstrations and fun hands-on activities for the kids. Fun Especially for Families Where Families Play Charlottesville is packed with great activities for children, from wonderful parks and playgrounds to special seasonal attractions. Apple and pumpkin picking at area orchards are always a popular autumn pastime, offering lovely views of the changing leaves and often includes hayrides and other fun. As the weather cools, many families enjoy hiking, biking and exploring the outdoors on our many trails. When Downtown, hop aboard the free trolley for a fun way to get around. You can ride the loop around the UVA grounds to Historic Downtown Mall where you can hop off to visit attractions that include the ice skating arena, toy stores and the Virginia Discovery Museum for children. If you’re looking for outdoor play to let off steam for the kids, the McGuffey Park near The McGuffey Art Center is an easy walk from the Downtown Mall. As Halloween approaches, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society hosts Spirit Walk, a spooky guided tour where you can visit all the best Downtown haunts of the past, including the historic County Courthouse and the Maplewood Cemetery. The Spirit Walk is a popular nighttime tour for adults and older children, and the event usually sells out, so make reservations early at albemarlehistory.org. Trick-or-Treat on the Lawn at UVA is another unique local experience. Costumed students living in the historic pavilion residences hand out treats and goodies to thousands of little ghosts and ghouls each year while proud parents preserve the memories with the Rotunda and colorful fall leaves as backdrop. Parking can be tricky on this popular evening, so allow extra time or carpool with friends. While on the Lawn, stop by room 13 on the West Range to say hello to the resident raven and see where famous writer of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, boarded as a student. Another favorite, end-of-October event is Downtown Safe Halloween with an annual costume contest and trick-or-treating on the Historic Downtown Mall. The Arts & Music Scene Music Notes Summer may be ending, but the free live music plays on in Charlottesville’s Historic Downtown Mall. Whether you prefer bluegrass or hip-hop, rock or country, alternative or classical, we have nTelos Wireless Pavilion: Courtesy nTelos Wireless Pavilion it all. Fridays after Five ties all of the local music fads into one long-lasting, free concert series. As Charlottesville’s favorite live concert series, it features local and regional acts at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Friday evenings through September 11 and is sure to keep your toes tapping! Grab a seat, pack a picnic basket or just soak in the vibrant music scene as you stroll the brick-paved walking district. Your last two chances to dance the night away include the Will Overman Band (Sept 4) and The Skip Castro Band (Sept 11). The nTelos Wireless Pavilion also has several big names coming this fall. In October, performances by Trampled By Turtles and Dr. Dog, Matt Kearny with special guest Parachute, The Avett Brothers and Modest Mouse will fill the Pavilion with well-known hit songs. Fans of our local band gone big, Dave Matthews Band, will want to stop into Miller’s on the Downtown Mall, where Dave served drinks before taking the stage and soon were on their way to becoming a Grammy-winning and top grossing touring band. Fall offerings at the Jefferson Theater (also on the Downtown Mall) include a variety of performances. September brings Of Montreal, Greensky Bluegrass and Rubblebucket, while October introduces Granger Smith featuring Earl Dibbles Jr. and Turnpike Troubadours. The Southern Cafe and Music Hall will feature a diverse array of performances all fall long, including Jim Lauderdale, The Dustbowl Revival, Southern Culture on the Skids, Particle, Future Birds, No BS! Brass Band and Lady Lamb. The Paramount Theater will be featuring Brule as well as Mayer, Kirby, Mayer this September, performances you won’t want to miss, and Grammy award-winner Kacey Musgraves will bring her Country & Western Rhinestone Revue to the historic venue in October. Boutiques & Specialty Shops Locally Crafted Begin in downtown Charlottesville and drive on Route 250 to the country town of Crozet and beyond to discover more shopping districts and take in some beautiful scenery, too. Plan your itinerary with the help of the Artisans Center of Virginia (ACV) the state’s official nonprofit craft organization dedicated to promoting Virginia artisans. The ACV has created the Monticello Artisan Trail, a Les Fabriques by Erin Hughes map of destinations within the city of Charlottesville and throughout Albemarle and Nelson Counties that designates more than 80 regional attractions, including artisan studios, craft venues, orchards, vineyards, farms, restaurants, lodging and more. A diverse range of Central Virginia’s unique traditions and talents are represented on the trail — from a leather artist making custom personal and equestrian accessories by hand at a studio housed in an old train depot to a celebrated executive chef and decoy carver who hosts guests at a lovely property that includes a studio, a rustic cabin and a trout stream. As you travel along the trail, you’ll have the opportunity to meet some of these artisans and see them at work. Also be sure to drop in at some of the trail’s many businesses and craft venues that display and sell work from local ceramic artists, weavers and furniture makers. Many of the trail’s most popular destinations are home to agri-artisans and farmers who represent the region’s vibrant heritage. Chat up the owners to learn more about their historic properties and their unique farming techniques. Historical landmarks and scenic byways, waterways and greenways from the Appalachian Trail on the trail’s western edge to the James River to the east are also included on the trail, which ensures that residents and visitors of all ages and interests will have a delightful time. Best of the Brew Breweries to Taste Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, taphouses and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers and ciders. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wines but beers and ciders as well. Monticello, in conjunction with our own homegrown Starr Hill Brewery, has crafted an artisanal beer: Monticello Reserve Ale. This Official Beer of Monticello is inspired by what Mr. Jefferson labored over and loved in a beer. In 1815 he wrote, “I am lately become a brewer for family use.” Any visit wouldn’t be complete without ordering a bottle of this heritage ale, which can be found at a variety of local restaurants and beer and wine shops. In addition to Jefferson’s home-brewed beer, hard cider was another everyday table drink at Monticello made from apples grown on site. One local cidery uses Jefferson’s favorite variety of apple, the Albemarle Pippin, to create a lovely hard cider that rounds out the range of beverages we’re proud to call locally made. Another cidery has begun making a delightful perry, a fermented pear juice, as well. Exploring the area’s ten breweries and four cideries is a wonderful way to spend a spring afternoon or evening. The Brew Ridge Trail, which features a variety of the area’s local breweries, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through scenic Albemarle and Nelson counties. Easily accessible by car, there are many local limousine and taxi companies that offer special rates for tours of the trail. A map of the trail and more details about each stop can be found online at BrewRidgeTrail.com. Our local breweries have taken the craft brewing world by storm, with medals at the country’s top beer festivals and nationwide accolades. Some breweries have opened restaurants on site, so now visitors and locals alike can imbibe these fabulous beers and historically crafted ciders while enjoying great food, amazing music and stunning mountain views. Additional local breweries and cideries are currently in the works, so check back for updates in the future. Virginia also has a long history of whiskey distilleries. The distillery at George Washington’s home Mount Vernon (in Northern Virginia) is still in operation and was once the largest in America, producing 11,000 gallons of whiskey in 1799. In addition to the distillery at Mount Vernon, whiskey lovers can tour a distillery in Sperryville (about 50 miles north of Charlottesville) and visit two Nelson County distilleries making local craft vodka, gin, and bourbon. Spirits are high for the future of Virginia spirits. 40

Vineyard Tours & Tastings Vineyards Bountiful & Beautifull Thomas Jefferson dreamt that Virginia wines would one day be plentiful and held in high regard, and today’s local vintners have accomplished that by producing wonderful award-winning wines. The Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA), which includes Albemarle and surrounding counties, encompasses more than half of Virginia’s wine Afton Mountain Vineyards, photo by Jennifer Jones Jefferson Vineyards, photo by Robin Bethke country and contains more than 1,000 acres of stunning vineyards. Vineyards in our Monticello AVA benefit from a natural east-southeast exposure and warm summer temperatures. Now the fifth largest wine-producing state in the country, Virginia has received both national and international acclaim for its wines. More than 20 local vintners offer up tastings from the lightest, lemoniest Pinot Grigio to the deepest, richest Merlot. Wine festivals bring thousands of visitors who come to taste the variety of flavors, enjoy local music and take in the glorious country views. In addition, many wineries offer tours, barrel and vertical flight tastings, multi-course wine-pairing meals and special events for connoisseurs and novices alike. Getting out to experience the vineyards is easy, as all major roads are marked with the grape “Tours” signs, helping wine lovers navigate their way throughout the country roads. Central Virginia is so picturesque that an unplanned detour can be a lovely way to explore a part of the region you may not have discovered otherwise; for those who like to make an itinerary and stick to it, it might be gratifying to know that many scenic drives offer a cluster of vineyards within easy distance of each other. See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 44 to find your way around the Monticello AVA. We suggest packing a picnic lunch to enjoy al fresco on the grounds of your favorite vineyard with wine by-the-glass or a bottle purchased from the tasting room. Many vineyards also offer meat, cheese and baguette platters for snacking. Varieties special to the Monticello AVA include Cabernet Franc, Norton and Viognier. Cabernet Franc, lighter than a Cabernet Sauvingnon, tends to have peppery aromas and can include hints of tobacco, plum or violets. The native North American Norton, another red, is deeply colored and might have notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Viognier is a white variety that gives off floral or fruity aromas but is typically a dry, or slightly off-dry wine. Whatever your palette desires — flowery, fruity, smoky, light — you’re sure to find it here. 42

A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition. A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color — which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country — is not so new, it was chosen by Jefferson around 1815 to

grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat — ice cream — was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

Becoming a Local The Rotunda is one of Charlottesville’s most iconic structures, designed by Jefferson after the Pantheon in Rome. It sits majestically on one end of the Lawn and was the original site of the school’s library, each book said to have been handpicked by Jefferson himself. Although historical tours may not be offered due to the Courtesy of Virginia Athletics Media Relations closure of the Rotunda for renovations, you can stroll the grounds on your own to explore the Lawn and Academical Village. The village consists of 10 pavilions, each of which housed faculty and held classrooms for various subjects. The larger pavilions are linked by 54 smaller, single-student rooms. The two-year renovation project plans to update historical features and restore the Rotunda as the center of the University’s academic activity and student life, as Jefferson had originally envisioned and is set to open the summer of 2016. The University Chapel is another must-see, though it wasn’t part of the original plans for the school. This beautiful stone chapel was a late addition to the University, built in 1889. While no longer used for services, it is still a popular place for weddings. To prevent parking frustration, consider using the two parking garages open to visitors at an hourly rate: the Central Grounds garage on Emmet Street (located underneath the University Bookstore and near the Lawn) and the Culbreth Road garage (convenient for visiting UVA’s Fralin Museum of Art or attending a play at Culbreth Theatre).

Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home, as is the surrounding Albemarle County, named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and photo by Holly Bittle served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. We’re in the center of Virginia, surrounded by gentle rivers, rolling green pastures, mild seasons and an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city — just over 10.4 square miles, with 45,000 residents — but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 101,000. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
