Spring 2016

Welcome! Year-round natural beauty, hallowed halls of history, spectacular arts and music and small-city sophistication — Charlottesville has it all! It is easy to see why Orbitz.com named Charlottesville as one of the five places every American should visit! Here you can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello home and at his beloved University of Virginia — both are World Heritage Sites full of fascinating history and interesting architecture — and you can relax in the scenic countryside he so admired dotted with stunning vineyards, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountain views. With so many wonderful places to enjoy here in Charlottesville, it can be tough to choose. So we went to the experts to find out what they think is the best of the best. We polled our Charlottesville Welcome Book readers, locals and tourists, about their favorite local businesses that exemplify wonderful customer service, from delicious restaurants, amazing boutiques, hot spots and cool clubs to wonderful resorts and awe-inspiring historical landmarks — and everything in between! Watch for the Welcome Book Winner logo on ads throughout this issue and in shop windows, and go to CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com to get the insider’s scoop on the best of everything our town has to offer. All of the award winners are highlighted in a special digital edition online, along with plenty of reader’s tips that will put you “in the know.” Throughout the spring, we’ll give away tickets to Charlottesville concerts, festivals and other events on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook, so be sure to like us for a chance to win!

Attractions & Museums Monticello in Spring Glory

Monticello: Theresa N. White

From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of the Independence, Thomas Jefferson, dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third U.S. president, governor of Virginia and Secretary of State, among other roles. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and the Tower of London, Monticello is a World Heritage Site, known internationally as a cherished piece of human history and of great universal value.

If you’re looking for a spring experience, visit Monticello for the Spring Wildflower Walk on April 7, 9, 16 & 28, 9am-12pm. This three-hour hike through the woodlands of Monticello to the Rivanna River is a perennial favorite of hikers and native plant enthusiasts alike. Enjoy the botanical treasures of early spring: trout lilies, Virginia blue bells, spring beauties and more.

For a more in-depth look at the history of the estate, don’t miss Monticello’s TOM Talks — a new series of talks featuring distinguished speakers on topics related to all facets of Monticello and Jefferson. The first TOM Talk is set for April 25 featuring best-selling author and lecturer Andrea Wulf on the West Lawn from 6:308:30pm. Tickets for the talks are sold separately from the house tours. See monticello.org for details. Enjoy Monticello with young ones with the Family Friendly Day Tour and Pass. Featuring hands-on opportunities, these tours provide a glimpse of life at Monticello designed especially for children ages 5-11. Explore Jefferson’s lifelong interest in gardening, botany, and agriculture while enjoying the beauty and variety of Monticello’s grounds on the Grounds and Garden Tour. For other tours, to schedule yours or to discover other events visit monticello.org. `

Touring Tip: Purchase the Monticello Neighborhood Pass to get

discounted admission to Monticello, Ash Lawn-Highland and Michie Tavern! Visit monticello.org for more information.

Monticello, Dining Room: Sequoia Design

History buffs can visit on April 13 to celebrate the anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth (ceremony at 10am). And the highlight of the spring season is Historic Garden Week, with special events at Monticello on April 25-26 and 30 (see pages 30-31 for more details).

More Historic Riches

When visiting Monticello, make sure you save time for Ash Lawn-Highland, the elegant plantation home of President James Monroe, our fifth president and Jefferson’s good friend. Ash Lawn is a working farm with more than 500 acres of land and a home for the performing arts. Visitors are invited to tour the historic presidential residence, explore the amazing boxwoods and much more. Wonderful events this spring include a celebration of Monroe’s birthday Ash Lawn-Highland: Jennifer Jones (April 28) and the Annual Sheep Shearing Event (see Ash Lawn-Highland’s website, ashlawnhighland.org, for an exact date). For those seeing Ash Lawn-Highland and Monticello on the same day, the perfect lunch break can be found at the 18th-century Michie Tavern just down the road, where you’ll feel like you’ve been swept back in time. The rustic restaurant features hearty Southern fare and servers in period attire. Make sure to purchase the President’s Pass to get a special discount combination ticket. Another presidential property in the area that is well worth exploring is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolley Madison. You’ll discover historic buildings and engaging exhibits, active archaeological dig sites, cooking demonstrations, and fun, hands-on activities for the kids. Spring events not to miss include Madison’s 262nd Birthday Celebration (March 16) and the Montpelier Wine Festival (May 7-8). See montpelier.org for more springtime events.

The Arts & Music Scene Art That Moves You Exuberant painter Jackson Pollock said that art is “all a big game of construction, some with a brush, some with a shovel, some choose a pen.” Whatever your favorite medium, galleries and artwork abound here. Each first Friday of the month, local galleries and other venues displaying works of art open their doors for the popular First Friday Artwalk.

One Child and a Bird Again. Artist: Deborah Kahn (Les Yeux du Monde)

The University of Virginia’s Fralin Museum of Art provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Exhibits include art from around the world dating from ancient times to the present. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers changing exhibitions, accompanied by related programs and publications. Spring exhibitions at the Fralin Museum include Richard Serra’s prints and a compilation of Navajo weavings.

Another unique local treasure of art is the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. With a full program of exhibits, lectures, research and education programs, the Kluge-Ruhe collection has a lot to offer the visitor who’s interested in indigenous artwork. A visit to the studio, gallery and printmaking workshop of landscape artist Frederick Nichols is just a short drive north to Barboursville. On the way, stop at Les Yeux du Monde just off Route 20. This spring’s exhibits include a compilation of talented artists titled “Visions for 2016.” On May 7 and 8, enjoy a day of the best local entertainment, crafts and art at the Crozet Arts and Crafts Festival, held in expansive tents come rain or come shine, on the grounds of Claudius Crozet Park, a short drive west of Charlottesville. Dozens of vendors participate, so there’s sure to be something for everyone.

Historic Garden Week in Charlottesville

If you long to get an exclusive peek at some of Virginia’s most stunning private properties, visit Charlottesville during the Historic Garden Week from April 23-30. During “America’s Largest Open House,” you’ll walk through gardens awash in springtime blooms, visit antique-filled homes and tour famous landmarks, all facilitated by the Garden Club of Virginia. On Saturday, April 23, Morven, a magnificent 19th-century estate built in late-Georgian and Federal style on the National Register of Historic Places, will open its doors for one day only. A part of the Historic Garden Week since it began over 80 years ago, Morven has selected antiques, Oriental rugs and documentary reproductions that complement the elegant wallpapers, carpets and fabrics. The grounds of this 7,400-acre estate contain unusual trees, including a pair of Osage oranges, the state champion Chinese chestnut and a lovely dove tree.

On April 24, enjoy tours of four stunning Albemarle County properties. The current owners of Bloomfield, a private residence that has served as a school at various points, have restored the 1849 Jeffersonian-style home to its former glory. The gardens boast original stacked-stone walls, large ancient American boxwood hedges, lush perennial beds, specimen trees and a beautiful pool with breathtaking views. Unforgettable Blue Ridge views can be seen from Verulam Farm, at the foot of Ragged Mountain. This 1939 manor home was designed by UVA alum Marshall Wells, known for using intricate moldings, Rockingham slate roofs, reclaimed “beehive” brick and for the blending of indoor

Festivals & Events and outdoor spaces. The owner has established a small heritage orchard and a nut walk leading to the woods. The Dick Woods Road property, just north of Ragged Mountain and at Foxhaven, is also on the itinerary, including 35 acres with a lovely modern home at the end of a tree-lined drive. Visitors will be delighted by “Limelight” Hydrangea standards; a long, brightly colored perennial garden; a stone-edged terrace with a wisteria-covered pergola, perennial beds and an open, double-sided fireplace; and a mowed nature walk path. Foxhaven, a sprawling 200-acre farm recently purchased by UVA, is under renovation. The gardens and trails were nurtured into a mix of woodland gardens, perennial beds, a cottage garden and shaded pathways lined with bulbs.

At Monticello, enjoy talks by the estate’s experts and discover the flora that define our horticultural heritage. Scheduled events April 23-30 include free lectures (registration required) about the estate’s historic landscape by Monticello’s Architectural Historian Gardiner Hallock, Director of Gardens and Grounds Gabriele Rausse and Curator of Plants Peggy Cornett. On April 25, join free tours of the gardens surrounding UVA’s world-famous Academical Village. Stroll through some of the Pavilions, which are still used as teaching facilities and faculty living quarters as Jefferson had intended, as well as nearby Carr’s Hill, home to eight of UVA’s presidents, completed in 1909. Don’t forget to visit the mansion and grounds at Montpelier, the lifelong home of James and Dolley Madison. The 2,650-acre estate includes the lush Annie DuPont Formal Garden and a 200-acre oldgrowth forest, a National Natural Landmark with walking trails. On April 18, three private homes and gardens — Somerset Plantation, Mayhurst Inn, and Woodley — as well as the Barboursville Ruins and the 1804 Inn, all part of “Mr. Madison’s Neighborhood” in Orange County, are also open for tours. On April 19-20, the historic home and gardens of President James Monroe, Ash Lawn-Highland, will open to visitors and Jeanne McKee, the estate’s flower gardener, will be on the grounds. Festivals & Events Festival of the Book Each March, Charlottesville celebrates one of our favorite pastimes with a unique ode to literature during the Virginia Festival of the Book. Its mission is to bring together writers and readers and to promote and celebrate books, reading, literacy and literary culture — all held dear in our community. Celebrating its 22nd year, the festival is the largest gathering of authors (many of them our own local notables) and readers in the mid-Atlantic region. This event is so big, in fact, that the festival can neither be held during a single day nor under a single roof. It’s spread across 50 different locations, in and around town, over the course of five days! This week of close to 150 events — ranging from fiction, poetry, Virginia history and current affairs to culture, music, photography and creativity, and more — is hosted by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. The Festival of the Book draws a diverse audience from both near and afar, so make reservations early for the March 16-20 event. For a full schedule of events, a list of speakers and other details, visit vabook.org.

Best of the Brew

Brews to Taste

Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, taphouses, distilleries and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers, ciders and spirits. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wine but also beer and cider. Monticello, in conjunction with our own homegrown Starr Hill Brewery, has crafted an artisanal beer: Monticello Reserve Ale. A wonderful way to spend a spring afternoon or evening, the Brew Ridge Trail, which features a variety of the area’s local breweries, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through scenic Albemarle and Nelson counties. Easily accessible by car, there are many local limousine and taxi companies that offer special rates for tours of the trail. A map of the trail and more details about each stop can be found online at BrewRidgeTrail.com. Virginia also has a long history of whiskey distilleries. The distillery at George Washington’s home Mount Vernon (in Northern Virginia) is still in operation and was once the largest in America, producing 11,000 gallons in 1799. Whiskey lovers can also tour a distillery in Sperryville and visit two Nelson County distilleries making local craft vodka, gin and bourbon. Spirits are high for the future of Virginia spirits.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. Visitors can check out Monticello’s restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house. A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition.

A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color — which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country — is not so new. It was chosen by Jefferson around 1815

Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. While Jefferson’s desire to have great wines locally available was never fulfilled during his lifetime, thanks to his unrelenting pursuits we can all now raise our glasses and revel in his dream come to fruition. To ensure that this dream continues, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has partnered with Piedmont Virginia Community College to create a training vineyard on Montalto, Jefferson’s “high mountain” overlooking Monticello. Visit monticello.org, for details.

to grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat — ice cream — was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Fresh Local Foods Charlottesville lies among a few beautiful counties — including Albemarle, Nelson and Orange — whose rich agricultural history and farm community are well loved and supported by our many local restaurants. Well before socalled locavores arrived in the headlines, many of our restaurants were already building their reputations on the quality of the local food they supplied to their grateful customers. Area chefs take great pride in creating memorable meals, and they also enjoy letting the artisan’s hand show through when plating locally crafted cheese, charcuterie, jam and wine. It is no exaggeration to say that local chefs and restaurateurs are friends with the growers, farmers and brewers who supply their establishments. Take note of the farms and artisanal ventures mentioned by name on menus, for you may encounter some of the people behind these provisions at the farmers market or find their products on the shelves of a specialty store — the perfect souvenir or gift.

With more restaurants per capita than any city in America, Charlottesville offers a wide variety of high quality dining for every occasion. Local specialties such as asparagus, greens, meats, eggs and candies have inspired area chefs to create innovative menus for our food-loving community. In addition, the city offers traditional Southern fare with a unique twist, as classically trained chefs incorporate their own expertise from the upscale world of gastronomy. This influx of acclaimed chefs from New York City to San Francisco into Charlottesville, some of whom have worked in Michelin-starred restaurants, and the city’s farm-to-table movement promises tasteful and diverse cuisine to please any food connoisseur. Rather than requiring formal attire, Charlottesville restaurants are known for offering the comfort of a casual environment without sacrificing quality. Charlottesville’s unique blend of quality and a relaxed atmosphere has not gone unnoticed, the 2015 James Beard Awards having recognized two Charlottesville chefs as semifinalists for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic and another local establishment for Best New Restaurant, the first in the city’s history.

Becoming a Local Welcome, Newcomers!

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

Congratulations on choosing Charlottesville as your new home! Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for year-round natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville has received countless accolades in recent years for a variety of reasons — from its delicious, locally sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. USA Today recently featured Charlottesville as a great place to invest in a home. “Take one of the nation’s quintessential college towns, throw in a big slice of American history, add golf courses and wineries, set it all in prime horse country, and the result is Charlottesville,” says Larry Olmsted for USA Today. We couldn’t agree more! Charlottesville’s geographic proximity in the center of Virginia provides residents with far more than just the gentle rivers, rolling pastures, mild seasons and an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. and the Atlantic coast. But “green” doesn’t just describe the rolling hills that surround Charlottesville. Green is a way of life for our eco-conscious residents, businesses and local governments. Charlottesville is leading the way to a healthier, cleaner future in Virginia and has been recognized with the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award. Now that you know a little more about all the great local offerings, turn to page 60 for details on how to get settled in your new home. modern

Becoming a Local The Scoop on UVA

The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda, and the two-year renovation project of the structure will be completed for this Spring’s graduation ceremonies. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda, you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

Why Not Retire Here? With a temperate climate, beautiful scenery, expert medical care and a thriving cultural environment, it should come as no surprise that Charlottesville is a popular retirement location. Learning institutions such as Piedmont Virginia Community College and UVA’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offer courses to suit all interests. OLLI even offers outings to international destinations in Europe, Memphis, Greece and Brazil. Many local gyms and fitness facilities offer senior classes. and the golf courses, tennis courts and walking trails are very popular, too. Where to Retire magazine recently named Charlottesville as one of the country’s “Dynamic Locales For Walkable Living.” Plus, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available locally, and our award-winning Senior Center has a great mix of programs and travel choices, such as a jaunt to Nashville or a trip to Ireland. Charlottesville is also proud to be home to two great medical centers, the University of Virginia Health System and Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, both offering outstanding health care on the cutting edge of medicine. With the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as a convenient gateway to a world of destinations and the coast only a couple of hours away, it’s no wonder Money Magazine rated Charlottesville as the No. 2 place to retire young!

And for those with school-age children, not only are the public school systems exceptional, but our area boasts more private-school opportunities per capita than most, offering everything from competitive college-prep programs (with boarding options) to schools based on the teachings of alternative leaders in education. Ever hear of the “McGuffey Reader,” one of the best-known early school books? A celebrated community leader and profound contributor to education, “McGuffey Reader” author William H. McGuffey spent the last 28 years of his life in Charlottesville, was a professor at UVA and is buried on the University Grounds. There’s no doubt that education is emphasized throughout our community. Learn all about Charlottesville’s educational opportunities at CharlottesvilleFamily.com.

Becoming a Local Pets Welcome!

N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection

If you treat your furry friends like family, you’ll fit right in here! With outstanding veterinarian care, pet-friendly hotels and outings and extensive outdoor parks and trails, Charlottesville is the ideal location for those with pets. Take a stroll along the brick-paved Historic Downtown Mall, where your pup will be happy to find refreshment at the many water bowls shop owners place outside of their stores just for this purpose. During the warm months, well-behaved pets are allowed to join their owners in the outdoor seating areas of some of the area’s finest restaurants. Local vineyards are also becoming more pet friendly, giving you countless options to enjoy the sights and sounds of Jefferson’s Virginia with your furry friend. Be sure to take your pooch to one of the local dog parks where they can frolic off-leash. Darden Towe Park, Azalea Park and Chris Greene Lake Park all include areas specific for dogs. While pets are allowed within nearby Shenandoah National Park, there are some trails where pets are prohibited, so be sure to check nps.gov/shen before you head out on your hike.

Becoming a Local How It All Started

Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home. Albemarle County’s historic roots extend equally as far. The county is named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. The first county seat was located in Scottsville. In 1761, however, county government was moved to Charlottesville, which was established as a town in 1762 and as a city in 1888. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city — just over 10.4 square miles, with 45,000 residents — but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 101,000. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
