Welcome! Year-round natural beauty, hallowed halls of history, spectacular arts and music and smallcity sophistication — Charlottesville has it all! It is easy to see why Orbitz.com recently named Charlottesville as one of the five places every American should visit! Here you can walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson at his Monticello home and at his beloved University of Virginia — both are World Heritage Sites full of fascinating history and interesting architecture — and you can relax in the scenic countryside he so admired dotted with stunning vineyards, horse farms and Blue Ridge Mountain views. With so many wonderful places to enjoy here in Charlottesville, it can be tough to choose. So we went to the experts to find out what they think is the best of the best. We polled our Charlottesville Welcome Book readers, locals and tourists, about their favorite local businesses that exemplify wonderful customer service, from delicious restaurants, amazing boutiques, hot spots and cool clubs to wonderful resorts and awe-inspiring historical landmarks — and everything in between! Watch for the Welcome Book Winner logo on ads throughout this issue and in shop windows, and go to CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com to get the insider’s scoop on the best of everything our town has to offer. All of the award winners are highlighted in a special digital edition online, along with plenty of reader’s tips that will put you “in the know.” Throughout the winter, we’ll give away tickets to Charlottesville concerts, festivals and other events on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook, so be sure to like us for a chance to win!

Attractions & Museums Monticello in Winter Glory From the moment you glimpse the iconic pillars of Monticello’s West Portico, you know you are in the presence of a visionary mind. The author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life to serving our country at its founding as the third United States Monticello: Robin Bethke president, Governor of Virginia and Secretary of State. Jefferson was also an architect, scholar, musician, inventor and agriculturalist. Like the Taj Mahal and Tower of London, Monticello is a World Heritage Site known the world over as a cherished piece of human history. Mr. Jefferson’s clever designs abound at Monticello, from the Great Clock in the hallway, which marks the days and hours with a pulley system, to the polygraph copying machine he designed for his famous letters. While visiting Monticello, take advantage of Virginia’s mild winters and enjoy the expansive landscape with a stroll on the grounds of the estate. Have you ever wondered what is upstairs at Monticello? Quench your curiosity with the Behind-the-Scenes House Tour that includes the second-floor bedrooms, once occupied by Jefferson’s family, the iconic third floor Dome Room and the interactive “Crossroads” exhibition under the house. On these guided tours, you’ll see unique interior architectural features, learn about on-going historic restoration efforts and gain insight into what one of Thomas Jefferson’s granddaughters called “the bustle and hurry” of life at Monticello. If you’re looking for a seasonal experience, Monticello offers Holiday Evening Tours where visitors get an intimate look at how the holidays were celebrated in Jefferson’s time, plus the rare opportunity to experience Monticello after dark. This year, Monticello will host a holiday open house on November 29, offering visitors a chance to be the first to see the historic home decorated for the holidays. The popular wreath-making workshops are another winter treat. These workshops produce a beautiful holiday decoration with which to adorn your front door or space above the mantle. See our Events Calendar on page 26 for more details.

Attractions & Museums More Historic Riches When visiting Monticello, save time for Ash LawnHighland, the elegant plantation home of our fifth president, James Monroe. Just two-and-a-half miles down the road from Monticello, everyone will love the 19th century decorations adorning the home. For those seeing both attractions on the same day, the perfect lunch break can be found at the 18thcentury Michie Tavern, just down the road from Monticello. The rustic restaurant features hearty Michie Tavern: Robin Bethke Southern fare and servers in period attire. For a special treat, indulge in the Yuletide Feast on the evenings of December 11 and 12, complete with strolling musicians who will entertain guests dining by candlelight. Another area presidential property is Montpelier, the home of James and Dolley Madison. The estate’s Christmas Open House on December 5 features tours of the Madison’s home for a very special introduction to the holiday season for you and your family. Visit with Santa Claus, enjoy live music, kids’ crafts, and seasonal food.

Fun Especially for Families Where Families Play From ice-skating at the Main Street Arena to family shows and movie screenings at The Paramount Theater, winter offers plenty of frosty fun for children on the Historic Downtown Mall. Be sure to check out the Visitors Center; then head to the Virginia Discovery Museum just steps away. This museum is full of fun hands-on exhibits, such Holiday Heritage Parade: courtesy Charlottesville Holiday Traditions as Little C’Ville, which includes a mini bakery, The Paramount Theater, post office and a Bee Hive sponsored by CharlottesvilleFamily Magazine. On sunny days, you’ll find the nearby McGuffey Park playground is the perfect spot for kids to run off steam. And, when the weather outside is frightful, hop aboard the free trolley for a fun tour of downtown. The Downtown Mall is also the place to be for holiday festivities! On December 4, kick off the season with the Grand Illumination of the Community Christmas tree. Before and after the countdown to flip the switch, there will be seasonal music, caroling and activities for the kids. On December 3, hop on the free trolley and head over to UVA for the annual Lighting of the Lawn, when students, faculty and the community gather for a stunning illumination and a capella entertainment. The Arts & Music Scene Music Notes Charlottesville’s eclecticism and great support of the arts lend the local music scene an amazing breadth. Whether you prefer bluegrass or jazz, rock or country, alternative or gospel, metal or classic, we have it all! At the Jefferson Theater, catch acts like An Evening with Dark Star Orchestra (December 2), Eddie from Ohio (December 18), Donna the Buffalo (January 9), Moon Taxi (January 22), Eli Young Band (February 19) and Corey Smith (February 25). The Paramount Theater will host The Oratorio Society of Virginia (December 19) and The Band of the Royal Marines and The Pipes, Drums, and Highland Dancers of the Scots Guards (January 19). Fans of the Dave Matthews Band will want to stop into Miller’s on the Downtown Mall, where Dave used to serve drinks before taking the stage. Before long, Dave and his friends were a Grammy-winning and top-grossing touring band. In addition, Charlottesville is home to the John Paul Jones Arena, named “Best New Major Concert Venue” at Pollstar’s annual Concert Industry Awards when it first opened in 2007. Get your tickets now for Fall Out Boy’s March 2 show or to see Elton John on March 19! Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, music has been part of the history of the University of Virginia. Located on The Lawn, UVA’s Old Cabell Hall houses one of the finest historic auditoriums in the country along with the largest music library in Virginia. The auditorium was first built in 1898 and is lauded by artists as one of the best venues worldwide for its excellent acoustics and intimate atmosphere. This winter, Old Cabell Hall will host performances from the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra, the Virginia Glee Club and the Rivanna String Quartet, among other groups. During your visit be sure to check out the copy of “The School of Athens” by Raphael that graces the north wall and dates back to 1900 as well as the Skinner organ, a gift from Andrew Carnegie in 1906. In addition to UVA’s long-standing interest and appreciation of music, the Municipal Band of Charlottesville has delighted the Paramount Theater. Photo Credit: David Lamb community with performances since 1922 and is now one of the oldest continuously operating amateur community bands in the country. The band performs regularly throughout the year at The Paramount Theater, first built in 1931. On December 13, catch the band’s annual holiday concert at the Martin Luther King Jr. Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School. Live music truly abounds in Charlottesville! Engaging Theatre When you visit Charlottesville, you’ll quickly see how our vibrant arts scene has something for everyone! Experience engaging local performances and touring troupes this winter at venues large and small. From national acts at The Paramount Theater to lively performances from our smaller local theater companies such as Live Arts and the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, there is always a show going on. The Charlottesville Ballet kicks off the holiday season with performances of “The Nutcracker Suite” at the E. C. Glass Auditorium in Lynchburg and at Piedmont Community College.
Visit The Paramount Theater on the Downtown Mall for more holiday classics, starting with “White Christmas” on the big screen. The Moscow Ballet returns to The Paramount to perform their version of the “Great Russian Nutcracker,” and Ash Lawn Opera reprises the beloved “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” The Band of the Royal Marines and The Pipes, Drums, and Highland Dancers of the Scots Guards will appear in late January. The Paramount will also present another season of live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera and National Theater Live’s “Jane Eyre.” Within walking distance of The Paramount is Live Arts, a volunteer theater that also puts on a variety of entertainment, from drama and comedy to performance art and music. This winter, Live Arts presents the musical “City of Angels,” its film noir-style evokes the feeling of Classic Hollywood, and “The Other Place,” the story of Juliana Smithton, a brilliant and ambitious neurologist as she struggles to discern between truth and fabrication. UVa’s Drama Department is performing the French playwright Pierre de Marivaux’s comedy “The Triumph of Love” in February. Check the schedule for more shows later in the spring. A short drive over the mountain to nearby Staunton’s American Shakespeare Center presents the works of Shakespeare and others “in the round” under the original staging conditions at the Blackfriars Playhouse. The winter season within this beautiful setting, the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre, includes “Santaland Diaries” and “A Christmas Carol” during the holidays and “Measure for Measure,” “The Tempest” and “Women Beware Women,” among others. Be sure to arrive early for the pre-show entertainment in true Shakespearian style. Performances abound in Charlottesville! Check the schedule at CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com. 22

The Arts & Music Scene Art That Moves You Exuberant painter Jackson Pollock said that art is “all a big game of construction, some with a brush, some with a shovel, some choose a pen.” Whatever your favorite medium, galleries and artwork abound here. Each first Friday of the month, usually from 5 to 9pm (hours vary), local galleries and other venues displaying works of art open their doors for the popular First Friday Artwalk. A perfect place to start your walk is the McGuffey Art Center. This gallery space is full of artists at work in their studios accented by a gift shop that carries a variety of members’ art throughout the year. You can pick up a gallery guide to First Friday’s offerings as well as browse the 45 light-filled studios, three galleries and gift shop at McGuffey itself. The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia provides a sophisticated, high-tech home for the art contained within its historic walls. Exhibits include art from around the world dating from ancient times to the present. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum offers changing exhibitions, accompanied by related programs and publications. Exhibitions at the Fralin include “Jacob Lawrence: Struggle...From the History of the American People,” “Cavaliers Collect,” a collection of works on loan from UVA alumni from distinguished artists, and coming in January, a collection from a contemporary icon “Richard Serra: Prints.” Another unique local treasure of art is the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia. With a full program of exhibits, lectures, research and education programs, the Kluge-Ruhe collection has a lot to offer the visitor who’s interested in indigenous artwork. A visit to the studio, gallery and printmaking workshop of landscape artist Frederick Nichols is just a short drive north to Barboursville. On the way, stop at Les Yeux du Monde just off Route 20. Scenic paintings from Dean Dass are featured December 4 through January 10. The gallery just celebrated its twentieth anniversary last January. Whether you’re merely appreciating or interested in purchasing, Charlottesville’s vibrant, robust art scene shouldn’t be missed. For more details, be sure to visit CharlottesvilleWelcomeBook.com.

Local artisans are popular in Charlottesville and the surrounding communities. Plan your itinerary with the help of the Artisans Center of Virginia (ACV) the state’s official nonprofit craft organization dedicated to promoting Virginia artisans. The ACV has created the Monticello Artisan Trail, a map of destinations within the city of Charlottesville and throughout Albemarle and Nelson Counties that designates more than 80 regional artisan studios, craft venues, orchards, vineyards, farms, restaurants, lodging and more.
A diverse range of Central Virginia’s unique traditions and talents are represented on the trail — from a leather artist making custom personal and equestrian accessories by hand at a studio housed in an old train depot to a celebrated executive chef and decoy carver who hosts guests at a lovely property that includes a studio, a rustic cabin and a trout stream. As you travel along the trail, you’ll have the opportunity to meet some of these artisans and see them at work. Also be sure to drop in at some of the trail’s many businesses and craft venues that display and sell work from local ceramic artists, weavers and furniture makers. Many of the trail’s most popular destinations are home to agri-artisans and farmers who represent the region’s vibrant heritage. Chat with the owners to learn more about their historic properties and their unique farming techniques. Historical landmarks and scenic byways, waterways and greenways from the Appalachian Trail on the trail’s western edge to the James River to the east are also included on the trail, which ensures that visitors of all ages and interests will have a delightful time. This winter, don’t miss exhibitions and crafts by new or local favorites. BozArt is a cooperative group of artists, working and exhibiting across Charlottesville. Exhibitions are always popping up in different locations so be on your toes as you may just happen across one on the Downtown Mall! A stone’s throw away from the Downtown Mall, make sure to stop by the city’s Holiday Market on the corner of Second and Water Streets every Saturday from November 28-December 19. All items are handmade, homegrown or home baked by local farmers, artists or bakers. For all the great winter artisan and crafty events and exhibitions, be sure to look at our calendar at charlottesvillewelcomebook.com!

Best of the Brew Brews to Taste Charlottesville is proud to be home to a myriad of microbrewers, taphouses and establishments that specialize in crafting or carrying outstanding handmade beers and ciders. Thomas Jefferson took great interest in creating not only wines but beers and ciders as well. Monticello, in conjunction with our own homegrown Starr Hill Brewery, has crafted an artisanal beer: Monticello Reserve Ale. This Official Beer of Monticello is inspired by what Mr. Jefferson labored over and loved in a beer. In 1815 he wrote, “I am lately become a brewer for family use.” Any visit wouldn’t be complete without ordering a bottle of this heritage ale, which can be found at a variety of local restaurants and beer and wine shops. In addition to Jefferson’s home-brewed beer, hard cider was another everyday table drink at Monticello made from apples grown on site. One local cidery uses Jefferson’s favorite variety of apple, the Albemarle Pippin, to create a lovely hard cider that rounds out the range of beverages we’re proud to call locally made. Another cidery has begun making a delightful perry, a fermented pear juice, as well. Exploring the area’s many breweries and cideries is a wonderful way to spend a winter afternoon or evening. The Brew Ridge Trail, which features a variety of the area’s local breweries, starts in historic Charlottesville and meanders through scenic Albemarle and Nelson counties. Easily accessible by car, there are many local limousine and taxi companies that offer special rates for tours of the trail. A map of the trail and more details about each stop can be found online at BrewRidgeTrail.com. Our local breweries have taken the craft brewing world by storm, with medals at the country’s top beer festivals and nationwide accolades. Some breweries have opened restaurants on site, so now visitors and locals alike can imbibe these fabulous beers and historically crafted ciders while enjoying great food, amazing music and stunning mountain views. Additional local breweries and cideries are currently in the works, so check charlottesvillewelcomebook.com for updates in the future. Virginia also has a long history of whiskey distilleries. The distillery at George Washington’s home Mount Vernon (in Northern Virginia) is still in operation and was once the largest in America, producing 11,000 gallons of whiskey in 1799. In addition to the distillery at Mount Vernon, whiskey lovers can tour a distillery in Sperryville (about 50 miles north of Charlottesville) and visit two Nelson County distilleries making local craft vodka, gin, and bourbon. Spirits are high for the future of Virginia spirits. 38

Vineyard Tours & Tastings Vineyards Bountiful & Beautiful Thomas Jefferson dreamt that Virginia wines would one day be plentiful and held in high regard, and today’s local vintners have accomplished that by producing wonderful award-winning wines. The Monticello American Viticultural Area (AVA), which includes Albemarle and surrounding Afton Mountain Vineyards, photo by Jennifer Jones counties, encompasses more than half of Virginia’s wine country and contains more than 1,000 acres of stunning vineyards. Vineyards in our Monticello AVA benefit from a natural east-southeast exposure and warm summer temperatures. Now the fifth largest wine-producing state in the country, Virginia has received both national and international acclaim for its wines. More than 30 local vintners offer up tastings from the lightest, lemoniest Pinot Grigio to the deepest, richest Merlot. Wine festivals bring thousands of visitors who come to taste the variety of flavors, enjoy local music and take in the glorious country views. In addition, many wineries offer tours, barrel and vertical flight tastings, multi-course wine-pairing meals and special events for connoisseurs and novices alike. Getting out to experience the vineyards is easy, as all major roads are marked with the grape “Tours” signs, helping wine lovers navigate their way throughout the country roads. Central Virginia is so picturesque that an unplanned detour can be a lovely way to explore a part of the region you may not have discovered otherwise; for those who like to make an itinerary and stick to it, it might be gratifying to know that many scenic drives offer a cluster of vineyards within easy distance of each other. See the Regional Wine Trail map on page 42 to find your way around the Monticello AVA. We suggest getting cozy by the fireplace or firebowl at your favorite vineyard with wine by-the-glass or a bottle purchased from the tasting room. Many vineyards also offer meat, cheese and baguette platters for snacking. Varieties special to the Monticello AVA include Cabernet Franc, Norton and Viognier. Cabernet Franc, lighter than a Cabernet Sauvingnon, tends to have peppery aromas and can include hints of tobacco, plum or violets. The native North American Norton, another red, is deeply colored and might have notes of coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Viognier is a white variety that gives off floral or fruity aromas but is typically a dry, or slightly off-dry wine. Whatever your palette desires — flowery, fruity, smoky, light — you’re sure to find it here. 40

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Jefferson’s Love of Food & Wine Thomas Jefferson was sometimes called “America’s first wine expert” due to his extensive experimentation in viticulture and oenology. Be sure to check out Monticello’s restored wine cellar in the passage beneath the house. Dining Room at Monticello: Monticello/Sequoia Design
D ining G uide
A platform above the brick floor allows visitors entry to the wine cellar to see what it looked like during Jefferson’s retirement years in the first part of the 19th century. Try out the model dumbwaiter in the “Crossroads” exhibit to see if you could have transported bottles of wine upstairs to guests without mishap! Afterwards, stop by the dining room to examine Jefferson’s original dumbwaiter, which has been restored to its original working condition. A spectacular sight awaits visitors in the dining room, which features walls painted a brilliant chrome yellow. The color — which replaced the Wedgewood blue that inspired so many homeowners across the country — is not so new, it was chosen by Jefferson around 1815

Virginia is considered the birthplace of American wine. While Jefferson’s desire to have great wines locally available was never fulfilled during his lifetime, thanks to his unrelenting pursuits we can all now raise our glasses and revel in his dream come to fruition. To ensure that this dream continues, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation has partnered with Piedmont Virginia Community College to create a training vineyard on Montalto, Jefferson’s “high mountain” overlooking Monticello. Visit monticello.org, for details.

to grace the walls that set the scene for many formal dinners, where rice soup, mutton and even a new treat — ice cream — was served. The dining-room restoration was sponsored by Polo Ralph Lauren and marked the first collaboration with Monticello curators and archaeologists with regards to the dining-room ceramics. Excavations showed that, in Jefferson’s retirement years, the family most often dined on pearlware, an English earthenware similar to porcelain but not as expensive. A set of green, shell-edged pearlware now graces the dining room, on loan from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Charlottesville lies among a few beautiful counties - including Albemarle, Nelson, and Orange - whose rich agricultural history and farm community are well-loved and supported by our many local restaurants. Well before so-called locavores arrived in the headlines, many of our restaurants were already building their reputations on the quality of the local food they supplied to their grateful customers. Area chefs take great pride in creating memorable meals, and they also enjoy letting the artisan’s hand show through when plating locally crafted cheese, charcuterie, jam and wine. It is no exaggeration to say that local chefs and restaurateurs are friends with the growers, farmers and brewers who supply their establishments. Take note of the farms and artisanal ventures mentioned by name on menus, for you may encounter some of the people behind these provisions at the farmers market or find their products on the shelves of a specialty store - the perfect souvenir or gift.

Wine & Dine Jefferson Style Sophisticated Dining

With more restaurants per capita than any city in America, Charlottesville offers a wide variety of high quality dining for every occasion. Local specialties such as asparagus, greens, meats, eggs and candies have inspired area chefs to create innovative menus for our food-loving community. In addition, the city offers traditional Southern fare with a unique twist, as classically trained chefs incorporate their own expertise from the upscale world of gastronomy. This influx of acclaimed chefs from New York City to San Francisco into Charlottesville, some of whom have worked in Michelin-starred restaurants, and the city’s farm-to-table movement promises tasteful and diverse cuisine to please any food connoisseur. Rather than requiring formal attire, Charlottesville restaurants are known for offering the comfort of a casual environment without sacrificing quality. Charlottesville’s unique blend of quality and a relaxed atmosphere has not gone unnoticed, the 2015 James Beard Awards having recognized two Charlottesville chefs as semifinalists for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic and another local establishment for Best New Restaurant, the first in the city’s history.

Becoming a Local Welcome, Newcomers!

Congratulations on choosing Charlottesville as your new home! Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, your new community is known for yearround natural beauty and small-city sophistication. Charlottesville has received countless accolades in recent years for a variety of reasons — from its delicious, locally sourced restaurants to its active, sports-centric community. USA Today recently featured Charlottesville as a great place to invest in a home. “Take one of the nation’s quintessential college towns, throw in a big slice of American history, add golf courses and wineries, set it all in prime horse country, and the result is Charlottesville,” says Larry Olmsted for USA Today. We couldn’t agree more! You’ll find that locals go out of their way to make you feel at home here — whether it’s with a simple smile as you pass one another on the Downtown Mall or by providing detailed directions to the nearest hiking trail to enjoy the spectacular summer blooms, fall foliage or breathtaking winter mountainscapes. We’re in the center of Virginia, surrounded by gentle rivers, rolling pastures set amongst a beautiful landscape, mild seasons and an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. and the Atlantic coast, with its sandy stretches of beautiful shoreline, lies just beyond. Charlottesville’s geographic proximity allows residents to enjoy a mild climate with four distinct seasons and an annual average temperature of 57 degrees. “Green” doesn’t just describe the rolling hills that surround Charlottesville. Green is a way of life for our eco-conscious residents, businesses and local governments. Charlottesville is leading the way to a healthier, cleaner future in Virginia and has been recognized with the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award. The city and county are committed to making green choices affordable for residents and regularly fund rebates for environmental home improvements. Clearly invested in having a healthy tomorrow, Charlottesville locals are eager to make environmentally smart choices. Now that you know a little more about all the great things Charlottesville has to offer, turn to page 61 for details on how to get settled in your new home. We welcome you!

Becoming a Local The Scoop on UVA
The University of Virginia is a bastion of tradition founded by Thomas Jefferson, the most popular man in town. Those who are fond of him often refer to him as TJ or Mr. Jefferson. Whether you’re preparing to enter its hallowed halls for a degree or enjoying a weekend in town, here is your guide to local lingo. We proudly cheer on our Orange and Blue, “The Cavaliers” — “Cavs” for short or “Wahoos.” What’s a Wahoo? Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “wahoos” during their fierce in-state rivalry back in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use to denote the University students or events relating to them. The abbreviated “Hoos” sprang up later in student newspapers. The area on which UVA sits is called “Grounds,” not “campus,” and freshmen here are called “first-years.” The large, domed building with Mr. Jefferson’s great statue is the Rotunda. It faces a huge grass courtyard known as “The Lawn,” surrounded by historic residences that are still coveted student and faculty residences. From the steps of the Rotunda you can see “The Corner,” the area located at the intersection of University Avenue and the central entrance to UVA, the Honor Gate. Always abustle, the Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices and trendy shops that give it a cool vibe.

Becoming a Local The Rotunda is one of Charlottesville’s most iconic structures, designed by Jefferson after the Pantheon in Rome. It sits majestically on one end of the Lawn and was the original site of the school’s library, each book said to have been handpicked by Jefferson himself. Although historical tours are not offered during the winter due to the closure of the Rotunda for renovations, you can stroll the grounds on your own to explore the Lawn and Academical Village. The village consists Photo Credit: Jennifer Jones of 10 pavilions, each of which housed faculty and held classrooms for various subjects. The larger pavilions are linked by 54 smaller, single-student rooms. The two-year renovation project plans to update historical features and restore the Rotunda as the center of the University’s academic activity and student life, as Jefferson had originally envisioned. The Rotunda’s projected opening date is set for the summer of 2016. While the Rotunda is closed, be sure to stroll through the beautiful pavilion gardens and check out the self-supporting serpentine walls, designed by Jefferson. The design and shape are both aesthetic and functional. The S-shape allows for the wall to be only one-brick thick and mostly self-supporting, as well as offering alcoves for beautiful trees and colorful flowers in these classically designed gardens. To prevent parking frustration, here are a few tips to keep in mind while visiting the University of Virginia. First, there are two parking garages open to visitors at an hourly rate: the Central Grounds garage on Emmet Street (located underneath the University Bookstore and near the Lawn) and the Culbreth Road garage (convenient for visiting UVA’s Fralin Museum of Art or attending a play at Culbreth Theatre). UVA also offers a temporary parking permit for the lots around John Paul Jones Arena, ideal for folks visiting for a halfday or more.

Why Not Retire Here? With a temperate climate, beautiful scenery, expert medical care and a thriving cultural environment, it should come as no surprise that Charlottesville is a popular retirement location. Learning institutions such as Piedmont Virginia Community College and UVA’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) offer courses to suit all interests. OLLI even offers outings to international destinations in Europe, Memphis, Greece and Brazil. Many local gyms and fitness facilities also offer senior classes. And, the golf courses, tennis courts and walking trails are very popular, too. Where to Retire magazine recently named Charlottesville as one of the country’s “Dynamic Locales For Walkable Living.” Plus, there are many rewarding volunteer opportunities available locally, and our award-winning Senior Center has a great mix of programs and travel choices, such as a jaunt to Nashville or a trip to Ireland. Charlottesville is also proud to be home to two great medical centers, the University of Virginia Health System and Martha Jefferson Hospital, both offering outstanding health care on the cutting edge of medicine. With the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport as a convenient gateway to a world of destinations and the coast only a couple of hours away, it’s no wonder Money Magazine rated Charlottesville as the No. 2 place to retire young!

And for those with school-age children, not only are the public school systems exceptional, but our area boasts more private-school opportunities per capita than most, offering everything from competitive college-prep programs (with boarding options) to schools based on the teachings of alternative leaders in education. Ever hear of the “McGuffey Reader,” one of the best-known early school books? A celebrated community leader and profound contributor to education, “McGuffey Reader” author William H. McGuffey spent the last 28 years of his life in Charlottesville, was a professor at UVA and is buried on the University Grounds. There’s no doubt that education is emphasized throughout our community. Learn all about Charlottesville’s educational opportunities at CharlottesvilleFamily.com.

Becoming a Local Doing Business

Charlottesville and the surrounding Albemarle County is a thriving, economically vital region home to approximately 145,000 residents and diverse job-generating enterprises from large employers to start-up companies. We enjoy viable non-profit enterprises, commerce, suppliers, research businesses and agri-businesses. UVA and its graduate programs attract talented students with infectious energy and exciting ideas who are a tremendous resource for local business. UVA, along with Piedmont Virginia Community College and the Charlottesville/Albemarle Technical Education Center, also provides the area with above par secondary education opportunities. In fact, Luminosity.com ranked Charlottesville as the second smartest city in America in 2013. Charlottesville was also voted one of the top college towns in the country to get a job. Major employers in the area include the University of Virginia, State Farm and the U.S. Department of Defense. Charlottesville also has a thriving small business community that provides our town with its unique vibe. Check out one of our biggest job and internship fairs this winter: UVA’s Spring Job and Internship Fair on January 28-29 at Newcomb Hall from 10am-3pm, where recruiters from corporate, government, education and non-profit organizations will be present to discuss a variety of opportunities to attendees. With all of the area’s positive attributes, it’s not surprising Charlottesville attracts many major employers. The city is one of few in the state with a triple-A Bond rating from two national reporting agencies and was recently ranked one of the top cities in the country to do business. In 2013, the city was voted one of the best small cities for working women, and named one of the best cities for living and launching a business by Forbes Small Business.

If you treat your furry friends like family, you’ll fit right in here! With outstanding veterinarian care, pet-friendly hotels and outings and extensive outdoor parks and trails, Charlottesville is the ideal location for those with pets. Take a stroll along the brick-paved Downtown Mall, where your pup will be happy to find refreshment at the many water bowls shop owners place outside of their stores just for this purpose. During the warm months, well-behaved pets are allowed to join their owners in the outdoor seating areas of some of the area’s finest restaurants. Be sure to take your pooch to one of the local dog parks where they can frolic off-leash. Darden Towe Park, Azalea Park and Chris Greene Lake Park all include areas specific for dogs. While pets are allowed within nearby Shenandoah National Park, there are some trails where pets are prohibited, so be sure to check nps.gov/shen before you head out on your hike.

Becoming a Local How It All Started
N ewcomer ’ s S pecial S ection
Charlottesville, named for Queen Charlotte Sophia of England and founded in 1762, is an inspiring setting to call home, as is the surrounding Albemarle County, named in honor of William Anne van Keppel. He was the second Earl of Albemarle and served as Governor General of the county from 1734 to 1735. We’re in the center of Virginia, within drivable distance of all the other major Virginian cities and an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive to Washington, D.C. One reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city — just over 10.4 square miles, with 45,000 residents — but it has the trappings of a big one. Musical acts and dramatic performances, fine dining, lovely shops — all are available in abundance. Covering 726 square miles, the county’s population is more than double that of the city, at about 101,000. Both city and county are fascinating places to explore and wonderful locales to call home, and we welcome you!
