We Carry Small Animals, Birds, Reptiles, and Fish
Just Between Us… With summer in full swing once again, our family craves lazy afternoons at the pool, hiking and biking on local trails and daytrip adventures. Now that the kids are getting older, we have recently gifted dad a kayak, something the entire family will enjoy. We have also put many miles on our bikes on the weekends exploring local trails. Anything outdoors, and preferably wet, is a favorite with my kids. We’re all about nature and science, and the Science Museum of Virginia is a favorite go-to on those hot days when the outdoors drives us in. We visited the Science Museum of Virginia recently and as we drove to Richmond, I prepped the kids on what exhibits we’d see, museum etiquette and, of course, safety, always an important topic when traveling, even near home with our youngest ones. “Stay with us. If you get lost look for someone who works there and ask for help. If you cannot find a worker, then look for a mommy with children.” I usually lecture. This all seemed very straightforward – I’ve given this talk probably hundreds of times now with four youngsters. However, this was the day our 9-year-old decided to fully process what I said. He asked several questions to determine why I’d even give the safety advice. I explained, “ You’re a very nice little boy, someone might want to have you for their own and take you home with them.” That seemed to satisfy his curiosity. (Meanwhile, Dad and I were giggling over the whispered joke that once they had to feed this ravenous boy for a day, they’d be putting up wanted posters to returned him asap!) But, his mind must have been still working all these ideas out because several

minutes and a few conversation topics later he suddenly and firmly interjected, “Mom, I think you are wrong about that.” “Wrong about what?” I replied. We were baffled as to what he was talking about so he clarified. “I do NOT think I WILL ask a mom for help if I get lost.” he boldly stated. “Why on Earth not? I am very nice. Moms are generally very nice. That is what you SHOULD do.” I explained. “Why not?” I asked. “Well,” he began, “she has already shown us that she likes kids if she has kids—so (obviously) she’d want me.” This took a minute to sink in and as I considered his often very literal point of view, he had a pretty well-reasoned objection. We went on to talk about how another mom would understand how sad I’d feel so she’d help him. He wasn’t entirely persuaded, I suspect, but agreed to follow our safety plan after all, and Dad and I were both amused and glad of it. I love these odd moments in our life, even while they challenge me as a parent. Sometimes the questions and strange ideas can be tiresome–—but I often find them exciting too. The endless questions children ask and challenges they offer up to us (while turning my hair gray prematurely I suspect) show me that they are inquisitive, critical thinkers who will change the world. At least that’s how I prefer to see them, especially when we’re on a long car trip.

AROUND
TOWN Do you ever let your child bike, skateboard or ride other wheels without a helmet? 24% say “yes”
76% say “no”
I rode my bike without a helmet when I was a kid, so I don’t have any issues with my kids doing the same.
We’ve never let our daughter ride a bike or scooter without a helmet. She’s a very confident rider now, but it’s just not worth taking the chance of a serious head injury. She knows she has to always wear it, and she’ll point out when she sees another child (or an adult!) riding without one.
- Anonymous Only at home (we let our boys ride their scooters in the house!) or somewhere where it’s flat and trafficfree, like a park or a school parking lot on the weekend. My boys are only 5 though, so as they move on to skateboards and other faster-moving wheels, helmets will be the rule. -Kim, mother of two boys Honestly, it depends on where we are and what the “wheels” are.

See a Healthy Ash Tree? Thank a Burnley-Moran Student
Courtesy of Joe Rice
by Beth Che
This May, Charlottesville’s mayor and council members gathered in their chambers at City Hall, awaiting a presentation from local experts. The experts – most of them nine-years-old – were armed with charts, pamphlets and posters. These fourth-graders from Burnley-Moran Elementary School had researched the problem of the invasive insect called the emerald ash borer, and now they were making recommendations to protect the ash trees of Charlottesville. The presentations were the culmination of months of research, field trips, writing and critical thinking, all centered around one big question: How can we solve this problem? “Problem-based learning is authentic learning that allows the students to explore a real life issue and work to solve this issue,” noted their teacher, Carol Busching. “They learn the valuable skills of looking at facts and issues, learning about them and then creating an action plan. These are skills they will use as lifelong learners.” As part of their research, the students learned about this foreign species and how it came to America and began killing ash trees. The students acquired tree maps of Charlottesville from the Tree Commission and visited the ash trees on their own campus. They learned how to identify the D-shaped holes that the insects make in an ash tree – and even sent some photos of suspicious-looking holes to experts. (Thankfully, the holes were created by more benign borers.) By using the Internet, the students sourced and priced the manuka oil and traps that can attract emerald ash borers. Finally, they brainstormed ways to get the word out to the public and realized that the City Council could be good partners for them in this effort. Among their recommendations to Council, the students requested permission to send home flyers in Charlottesville residents’ water bills and expressed the desire to hang posters along the downtown mall. Student expert Allison said, “We knew we wanted to help Charlottesville. I’m looking forward to not having all our ash trees die.” Want to protect your own ash trees? Look for the telltale sign of the D-shaped hole. Use birdseed to attract woodpeckers that help control the insect population. And when you go camping this summer, use local firewood so that you don’t spread the pest around.

DAYTRIP Fun! Adventure Park
While in the area, also stop at Twin Lakes State Park for other kid-friendly activities. A concession building with food and sweet treats is available at the Park as well.
Can’t make up your mind about one activity for the family? You don’t have to at the Adventure Park at Sandy River Retreat! Start the day with a splash and take the family out on the Sandy River Reservoir or the Appomattox River in a kayak or canoe. Trained staff will give the family “Paddling 101” before weighing anchor. Both offer single and double kayaks and canoes, giving families of all ages the
opportunity to experience the beautiful Virginia outdoors. The Sandy River Reservoir offers trips throughout the morning and afternoon, 7-days-a-week, while the Appomattox River offers weekend outings twice a day. The Sandy River Reservoir boasts fun fishing activities; and if you stay close to the shoreline, your chances of spotting wildlife along the banks increase. With over 700 acres of lake to explore, there’s always something new to see while floating along. Make your family’s reservation online today or call ahead before driving the short 20 miles to the Retreat. After a day of fun, the family can stop by Walker’s Diner, a quaint 50s-style diner, for good food and great service. And for the outdoor lovers, Adventure Park also offers log cabin rentals, allowing families the chance to turn an incredible day trip into a weekend getaway!

Zip and Climb Virginia Learn to “challenge yourself to new heights” at central Virginia’s largest aerial adventure park. With over 60 obstacles and 17 zip lines, the Adventure Park at Sandy River Retreat offers a fun new activity for the family this summer that’s sure to get your heart rate up. Speed through treetops, climb over elements and crawl under obstacles while working as a team. Watch as you and your kids build confidence through a challenge of body and mind. Cheer each other on while relishing Virginia’s scenic outdoors. The team-building exercises help teach effective communication, trust and leadership development in a creative way. Safety is Adventure Park’s number one priority for its visitors, as they only use the most advanced belay system during the zip line and high ropes course. Training helmets and gloves are provided, and a fully trained staff helps ensure participants safety. So even though your heart may race, you’ll learn to reach out and pull yourself up to surprising new heights. The park can even be a fun alternative for a summer birthday celebration where both kids and adults alike can participate. For those age 7 and older, come out and discover the great outdoors like you haven’t seen it before. All in one day, the family can kayak or canoe, climb and zip through the Adventure Park this summer!

{living well new mom} Newborn Home Makeover Home Design Tweaks for the Newborn Weeks The only consolation for the end of “Mad Men” is the debut of the new series “Newborn Home Makeover” on HGTV. Wait…there is no show called Newborn Home Makeover. For starters, newborns are miraculous beings who happen to stink at decorating. And secondly, new moms are way too busy to talk to contractors about plumbing stub-ins. And yet, having a newborn is one of those seismic life events that makes you reevaluate everything, including your home’s design. That sweet gingham curtain you installed when you were pregnant in lieu of a nursery door? Now it’s as good as a hot mike in your baby’s ear every time you tiptoe down the hall. And your over-grown yard? Oh, man. Boo Radley is your landscape architect. If necessity is the mother of invention, then change is the mama of design. People see by Whitney Woollerton Morrill
building projects as signs of success--and they are. But architects can testify that a whole lot of home renovations arise from a storm of frustration, soul-searching, anxiety, hope, preparedness and here-goes nothing. Just like parenthood! When you have a new baby, your house may suddenly feel all wrong. And maybe it is all-wrong. But one creative project at a time, Diana Vreeland! You just made a human. And you’re kind of still making him or her due to that whole fourth trimester thing that no one told you about. Here’s the plan. You need some architectural relief, stat! Five stop-gap home design tweaks for the newborn weeks are: 1. Switch out your nightstand with a bigger table to hold not just your lamp and clock, but everything else you now need within arm’s reach: creams,

meds, water, ice packs, baby supplies, and phone. If you’ve had a C-section, put a stepping stool by the bed to reduce the tug on your

Ridge. Don’t over think it. This temporary trick will lift your spirits by helping you see your art again. 3. Mark squeaky floorboards with painter’s tape so you won’t wake the baby. Or Mom. 4. Ask friends to chip in for a housekeeper to defunkify your bathrooms and change your sheets. Small things mean a lot when you
can’t attend to basics. Plus you’ll have an answer when everyone says, “How can I help?” 5. Mow the front yard only. In the back yard, just cut the grass every other week or so. If anyone asks, say it’s an “intervention in the landscape.” So the next time someone says, “Sleep when the baby sleeps,” visualize yourself taking a Sawzall to the wall between the kitchen and dining room. Or better yet, yank down that gingham curtain and score a solid-core door from the local salvage store.

Flip-Flops: Pluses and Minuses Warm-weather Footwear Definitely Has a Flip Side Flip-flops are a summertime staple. And for good reason: At the beach, they’re the perfect way to avoid sand-filled shoes. At the public pool or showers, they can help protect against plantar warts or athlete’s foot. But this popular warm-weather footwear definitely has a flip side. Wearing flip-flops for certain activities or for extensive periods of time is a no no, experts say. Here’s why. “I think there’s a time and place for flip-flops. They are great for the beach. I wear by Kelly Casey
them to get my mail,” says Christopher Holstege, M.D., a University of Virginia Health System emergency medicine doctor, who also serves as co-medical director of the UVA Blue Ridge Poison Center. But Dr. Holstege also sees plenty of injuries related to unprotected feet. “I’m not an advocate at all of wearing flip-flops while driving or riding a bike. It’s

dangerous,” he says. He’s also seen a fair number of snake and caterpillar bites on the backs of feet from walking in grass; sticks stuck in the webs of toes from hiking; and, although rare, burns on feet caused by runaway coals from a campfire. The American Podiatric Medical Association warns that flip-flops are not appropriate for everyday wear, as they don’t provide the needed support. Research in recent years has also uncovered some unsettling findings. In a 2009 study, New York Daily News reporters wore a pair of flip-flops around New York

resistant to antibiotics on occasion. Another study revealed why it’s a bad idea to make thong-style flip-flops your everyday walking wear. In an Auburn University study led by a biomechanics doctoral student, researchers found that walkers wearing flip-flops tended to take shorter steps, grip the flip-flops with their toes, and hit their heels on the ground with less vertical force than when the same walkers wore athletic shoes. Not
surprisingly, the researchers found that wearing flip-flops can result in sore feet, ankles and legs; but because flip-flops alter a person’s gait, they can lead to problems and pain “up the kinetic chain” and into the hips and even lower back. While experts say you don’t need to throw away your family’s flip-flops, it’s important to wear them in moderation. Replace them at least once a year, recommends the American Podiatric Medical Association. Holstege suggests wearing clog-like Crocs™ as an alternative to flip-flops. This popular casual footwear is just as easy to slip on and lightweight but provides feet and toes with a little extra protection.

Heads in Beds Jacob Tomsky’s memoir of a decade in the luxury hotel business is surprisingly entertaining, and it may save you big on your next vacation. A 2014 study revealed Americans leave 40% of their vacation days unused. Those surveyed cited worry about returning to mountains of work, the belief that no one could take their place while away, and fear of being seen as replaceable.

TRENDS by Brooks Wellmon
Get to Work . . . on Taking a Break Vacation can seem like a luxury you can’t afford, but a host of reasons exists on how to prioritize a getaway. 1. Women who rarely take a vacation are almost eight times more likely to have a heart attack than those who take at least two vacations a year. By even making time for mini-vacations in your schedule, you can help balance all areas of your life.
3. Vacationers who stay electronically connected to work while away are less likely to receive the benefits of a vacation and more likely to burn out, so take the opportunity to turn off your phone and laptop for a few days.
2. After a few days on holiday, people average one hour more of quality sleep each night. Be conscious of how many hours you are getting on a weekly basis to avoid a decrease in quality sleep.
4. Don’t forget that even an imperfect vacation yields lasting memories.

Beating Jetlag How can I minimize jetlag on my next vacation? It’s best to get on the schedule of where you’ve landed as soon as possible. If you arrive early in the day but feel ready for bedtime, try a relaxing massage and a short nap, then push through until dinner. If you awaken too early, take advantage and watch the sunrise. “I also recommend drinking copious amounts of water,” says Julie Arbelaez, owner of Peace Frogs Travel/Outfitters, “but these days, who doesn’t recommend that for pretty much everything?”

Signs he can try: He watches you intently when you use a glass, is able to keep food mostly in his mouth when he chews, and makes “raspberries.” Some experts say drinking from a cup early on may help kids develop the oral skills they need for speaking. Plus, using lidless cups means they’ll mainly drink during meals and snacks; that’s healthier than all-day sipping.

Concerned that you won’t be able to keep her at the table? “Don’t battle her on this,” says Marotz. “Her attention span for meals is about 15 minutes, and she needs much less food than when she was a baby. Respect that and let her leave the table when she says she’s done.”
Crib Big-kid bed
WHAT’S OUT: WHAT’S IN:
Ready, or not? “Around age 2, your child may throw his legs over the crib rails or actually climb out,” says sleep coach Kim West, author of Good Night, Sleep Tight. Kids who climb over and slide down can break little arms or collarbones. If your child seems content in his crib, though, keep him there until as close to age 3 as possible. Before that age, it’s hard for him to understand bedtime rules. Here we go! Heidi Miles of Gig Harbor, Wash., moved her son to a big-boy bed when he turned 2. “Brendan was tall for his age and very agile, so a tumble out of the crib was inevitable if I didn’t make the move,” she says. After a few nights of sleeping with his new box spring and mattress on the floor (a smart way to ease the transition), Brendan didn’t miss his crib. And Miles’s motherly instincts were spot-on: “After dismantling the crib, I read the label and

A NEW TYPE OF
Rhythm Learning through Song & Dance with Mainly Music by Jody Hobbs Hesler
46
July 2015
{inspiration education} “With a 2-year-old, you get nervous taking them to certain things. They’re so unpredictable. With this space, it’s fine. Anything goes here.” — Courtney Valladares
“We’re all in our places, with bright smiling faces . . .” begins the good-morning song at the start of a session of Mainly Music in the multipurpose room of Charlottesville’s Trinity Presbyterian Church. The leader of the session sings her welcome from the stage, which is set into the dark-green far wall whose white accents give it the homey feel of a barn. The nondenominational program meets in two morning sessions every Friday of the school year. Though hosted by Trinity, church membership there — or anywhere — is not required for participation. Originally started in 1990 in New Zealand, the program has been gaining popularity around the world ever since. Mindy Goodall and Mel Dobratz, her college friend, were introduced to Mainly Music when they visited a session at McLean Bible Church in 2006. They were so inspired by the experience that they founded a Mainly Music program in Charlottesville within the following year.
GATHERING IN A HAPPY PLACE To children, a combination of music, dancing and playtime always makes for fun. Mainly Music’s curriculum provides just that: music, movement and age-appropriate play for preschoolers from birth to 5 years old. “We had a waiting list almost from the get-go,” Goodall says. “There aren’t many activities for families in this town that are this affordable and that foster such a sense of care and community,” says current Co-Director Lauren Thompson. “I like that kids get to connect with their caregiver while having fun, learning music and having the chance to move their bodies and play in age-appropriate ways.” Co-Director Sheila Porter notices another reason for the program’s success. “One of my favorite things,” she says, “is when the little ones come through the door and realize where they are . . . and they just start bouncing.”
“It was a good way to meet people when I moved to Charlottesville last year.” – Participant, Melissa Ramsey
During my visit, the multipurpose room brims with cheerful toddlers and babies scooting on their seats, running on their feet, twirling and singing. There are a lot of kids, but a calm, safe feeling fills the room. A check-in table by the entrance intersects with a table for storing coats and bags. In the back, more tables line walls in preparation for snack time. A mix of volunteers and paid staff check people in, prepare the snack and manage the stream of happy arrivals.

LEARNING ABOUT MUSIC THROUGH MUSIC From the stage, the leader continues to sing her welcome to the gathering participants: “Turn to your neighbor, and shake their hands, shake their hands this morning.” Her voice is miked, and the projection screen behind her shows lyrics of the songs. Around the room, the older children mimic the leader’s actions. The focus of attention ranges from shy, gentle curiosity to active dancing. The smaller ones get help from adults, or dance or wander freely in the bright, open room. Each session lasts an hour. The first half involves an organized program of music and motion, drawn from Mainly Music’s carefully planned curriculum. Over time, many of the songs get repeated, so that the children develop familiarity with them. Older songs cycle out as newer songs cycle in, to keep things fresh and changing. The day I visit, after the welcome songs, the leader moves on to sing about cleaning up messes and about Jesus’ love. Then the children play a game of musical I Spy, waving and wagging a feather in response to the leader’s movements and searching

toddlers and babies feels chaotic. But it’s a safe chaos here in Trinity’s multipurpose room. The openness of the room and free reign of play are part of what Courtney Valladares loves about the program. Recent transplants from California, she and her son just started attending Mainly Music in September. “What I really like about [coming here],” Valladares says, “is that with a 2-year-old, you get nervous taking them to certain things. They’re so unpredictable. With this space, it’s fine. Anything goes here.” Beth Haluska likes this aspect of the program, too. Her 21-month-old son “loves the music, and he likes to wander around,” she says. “It’s a nice safe space for him to do that, and he loves the play time afterward.” APPEALING TO THE CHILDREN The Mainly Music program is planned around three central principles to appeal to all families: to be affordable, to serve multiple age groups and to encompass a welcoming atmosphere. “My kids like it,” says Melissa Phillips, who has two children in the program. She’s been coming to Mainly Music for three years. “It’s [about sharing] time with them,” she says. “It appeals to both age groups, which

A Touch of History
Historic heroes abound in Albemarle. The legacy of
presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe includes their magnificent homes—Monticello, Montpelier and Ash Lawn-Highland—and thriving local tourism. Meriwether Lewis, perhaps the most famous explorer in the U.S., was from Ivy, just west of town. Every local should of course make a point to visit Monticello and nearby Ash-Lawn Highland. Tours are always differing and newly fascinating and exhibits changing. Kidfriendly activities are also highlighted at local hotspots like Monticello, which has the Griffin Discovery Room in the Smith Education Center where kids can learn how to weave, write on a polygraph machine and more. Families can also grab lunch at Michie Tavern, an 18th centurystyle southern buffet on Thomas Jefferson Parkway. The McCormick Observatory is another great attraction for any budding astronomers interested in “outer space stuff”. The UVA Astronomy Department has an Education and Public Outreach program for the general public, families and students in grades K-12. CharlottesvilleFamily.com

TJ Was Here
The most popular man in town will always be Thomas
Jefferson. He is often fondly called “TJ,” and his university—one of the best public universities in the country—is the biggest employer in our area. It’s also a great draw for sports fans, who turn out in droves to cheer on the UVA Cavaliers, also known as the “Wahoos” or “Hoos” for short. Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed the UVA players “Wahoos” during the rivalry that existed between the two in-state schools in the 1890s. By 1940, “Wahoos” was in general use around Grounds (campus) to denote University students. Many UVA teams embrace families and kids with occasional budget-friendly packages along with events where players meet families out in the community. The big domed building, now under a major renovation, is the Rotunda that was designed by Jefferson after the Pantheon in Rome. With TJ’s great statue out front, it sits at the head of a huge grass courtyard area known as the Lawn, surrounded by historic residences (Edgar Allan Poe was one of the most famous residents) that are now occupied by students and faculty. The Lawn is packed full with children trick-or-treating every Halloween and with UVA students every spring for graduation. The University has also been home to a number of recognizable names over the years. Many writers have walked the grounds, including David Baldacci and Linda Fairstein. William Faulkner was UVA’s first Writer-in-Residence. Accordingly, the Special Collections Library has a significant collection of Faulkner’s personal papers and manuscripts.

Celebrity Spotting
While you’re out and about, you may get a glimpse of local
celebrities like Dave Matthews, Howie Long, Sissy Spacek, John Grisham, Boyd Tinsley, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Mary Chapin Carpenter or Jan Karon. Follow the example set by other locals and refrain from staring or asking for autographs. The Dave Matthews Band (aka DMB) are hometown boys who made it big time. On your next outing to the Downtown Mall, stop in at Miller’s to see where they used to hangout. Dave worked there as a bartender, back when he and the boys were still a local band. Over the years, the band has given millions of dollars to local nonprofits through its Bama Works Fund. Band members’ influence is also felt each year when the Boar’s Head Resort hosts
free to the public. DMB Manager Coran Capshaw, another celeb around town, is a big business investor in many local properties from the nTelos Wireless Pavilion, Jefferson Theater and a number of downtown restaurants to Starr Hill brewery, Music Today and other ventures. A graduate of UVA, Capshaw now also manages Phish, Tim McGraw and Alicia Keys.

The Skinny on Schools
Our area has received many accolades, ranging from appearing on Reader’s Digest’s
“Top 10 List of Best Places to Raise a Family” to being named the “#1 Best Place to Live” by Sperling’s Best Places. A key factor to those recognitions comes from our area schools having a great reputation in excellent education. Charlottesville and Albemarle County schools earn praise for innovative teaching as well as high levels of achievement on Virginia’s Standards of Learning tests. There is a huge variety of preschools, from creative co-ops to international immersion programs; and for school-age children, our public school systems are exceptional and our many outstanding local private schools provide a variety of additional options, from boarding schools to single-gender programs to faith-based education. You will learn quickly how important and emphasized education is throughout the community.
