Welcome to This past year, we celebrated our 21st year of CharlottesvilleFamily, an adventure that started when Robin, a soon-to-be first-time mom in 1998, imagined a way to collect and share the many wonderful resources and experiences she was finding in the Charlottesville community. She envisioned a hub to connect us all. With that vision, she created the AlbemarleKids.com website and within a year was joined by Jen as co-publisher and the rest, as they say, is history. We changed our name to AlbemarleFamily in 2004, introduced our lovable bee mascot, Bumble, and expanded the magazine from quarterly to 10 times per year, and soon after we advanced to a monthly publication. In 2012, we embraced the name of CharlottesvilleFamily to keep up with our community’s expanding views (and make life a little simpler for our out-oftown clients). In 2016, we added Bloom to our publication’s name, making it CharlottesvilleFamily’s Bloom magazine; and then more recently, in 2019, we changed the magazine to bi-monthly. We’ve continued to add to our line of publications with CharlottesvilleFamily’s Ultimate Go-To Guide (in your hands), Charlottesville Welcome Book, Wine & Country Weddings and Wine & Country Life. The Ultimate Go-To Guide you have here first began as our annual Family Directory in 2001 and today has been blended with the popular daytrip book we published first in 2008 and again in 2009 called the Let’s Go Guide. Plan, Plan and Plan Some More! Consider your choices. Not every daytrip is the right outing for you. Some sites are easier to access than others. A few are rambunctious hands-on learning kinds of places that some kids might find overwhelming. Some are places where you look but don’t touch. Others may be wide-open spaces, and if your tot is in that crazy stage where keeping hold of them should earn you an Olympic medal, you probably want some walls to help manage your adventurer. Other destinations may have upsetting topics. For example, the Civil War is tough to explain to a preschooler, so use your judgment to choose the best outing for you.

Call ahead. Our daytrips guide is well researched, but as we all know, the only thing certain in life is change. Hours, admission prices, activities and events can and do change, and websites are not always up-to-date. One of our staff once drove two hours with three small children to tour a site only to find that it was closed that Saturday for a wedding. Had they called, they could have saved a lot of tears and the day of driving! As a result, we’ve intentionally left out directions and hours of operation, hoping that will force you to call! Sorry, it’s for your own good.

Get directions. Use an Internet mapping site to get oriented and print out directions, but then call to confirm them. (Google isn’t always right!) While you’ve got someone on the phone, confirm hours, admission prices and any special something you might have your heart set on seeing— like that rare painting that might be on loan to some other museum!

How Do You Spark Your Child’s Love of Learning? The Standards of Learning—just say those words and you will see your kids wince. Say the words again, this time in a room full of parents, and you’re likely to get the same anxious reactions. But it doesn’t have to be all hard work. One of the best ways to help your kids do well in school and on their SOLs is to relax about the tests and think about what is really important: sparking your child’s enthusiasm for learning. The rest will fall into place. A lifelong love for learning and a curious mind are two of the greatest gifts any of us can hope to pass on to our children. So, how exactly do you spark your child’s love for learning? Check out a few ideas to enrich your daytrip adventures on the next page.

Pack wisely and prepare for the unexpected. As mothers, we always start with a cooler of water bottles and fruit for snacking; and in writing this guide, we fine-tuned the contents of “Mama’s Magic Bag” (the old backpack filled with comfort that is never allowed to leave our minivan). Granola bars, water, diapers, wipes, sunscreen, bug spray, a first aid kit, crayons and a notebook rescued many a strained moments with tired cranky travelers. (Not all of the cranky ones were the kids either!) You have an advantage, too—we’ve written this guide and now you’ll benefit from our packing tips and have the phone numbers of all the attractions in one handy volume. Don’t forget to have your cell phone charged!

Become a Lifetime Learner! hen it comes to outings, whether it be a weekend daytrip or a quick W midweek experience of the arts, we’re firm believers in making the most of an opportunity to learn something new. No matter what the age of your party, whether it’s just you and a friend or you and your kids, we can all become lifetime learners when we get up and go explore and learn more about our world, its past or just what makes a water slide so much fun!

Read, read, read. And we’ll say it again—read! And that goes for your kids, too. The more your kids see you reading, the more they’ll read, because it will be a part of everyday life. Use little moments to practice reading. Read street signs, maps, tourist brochures and restaurant menus together.

Play the old-fashioned way. Dress up for your outing. Little train conductors could wear their engineer overalls to ride the James River Rambler, and don’t leave behind your tri-corner hat or bonnet when visiting Colonial Williamsburg. Creative and dramatic play expand the imagination, hone problemsolving skills, let kids enjoy just being kids and make for great photos!

Keep your eyes open. On your nature outings bring along binoculars and a magnifying glass. Observe insects and small animals in their habitats. How many legs do they have? Where do they live? What senses are they using? Looking at flowers, ask, how are the leaves ordered? Can you hear different bird calls? Are you able to see different bark on trees? Are there patterns?

Travel by the numbers. Reading maps with your kids and planning the outing together is a great way to do math without being academic. How many miles is it from Charlottesville to Luray? If we set out at 9:30am and the drive is 42 minutes, what time will we arrive? If admission is $3 per person and we have four people in our family, how much will it cost? These sorts of puzzles give real life meaning to all of those workbook pages full of sums and dividends.

Encourage your child’s talents and passions. Let them choose a destination. With dozens of choices on the following pages, you’re certain to find something to match their interests. It is amazing how much information can be absorbed when interest is sparked.

Let your kids be “know-it-alls.” Children are like walking almanacs, live records of every fact that has ever intrigued them. Make up family quiz games, or design your own version of Trivial Pursuit. Play “20 Questions” when you ride in the car. Try a contest to see who can learn the craziest fact or the longest word while on your outing.

Enlist a co-pilot. Firsthand experiences of our country’s landmarks can spark a lifelong love of history, and planning them can be part of your child’s education. As a local teacher said, “Reading maps, planning a route, using directions like north and south instead of left and right—that doesn’t come naturally. It really needs to be reinforced by parents.”

Find new spots. In Central Virginia, there’s no excuse for not taking advantage of all of the nearby attractions with presidential birthplaces at our back door and geological formations like the Shenandoah Caverns and the Natural Bridge an easy hour or two away. If you think you’ve exhausted the local repertoire, try a new approach. Most families have been to Monticello, but certainly not everyone can say they’ve been a part of one of Monticello’s unique hands-on craft or history workshops. And if history is your family’s favorite, try Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier in Petersburg—an amazing interactive experience of the Civil War where, using headsets, you follow the life of a soldier as he tells his story in his own words—taken from journals and letters.

A Collection of Memories Here’s a word from the wise about collecting souvenirs, too! We all retain what we’ve learned when we revisit a subject again and again. Building a collection of something you can pick up at just about any gift shop will put you and the family on the path to revisiting and remembering all those wonderful places you’ll be exploring—while at the same time preventing those pleas for that expensive stuffed animal you know will end up in next year’s donation box. For instance, create a collection of souvenir pins and display them all on a banner in your family room, or make a special box to house a collection of souvenir key chains or rolled and embossed pennies, or make a book for postcards or brochures. These collections will be easier on your budget and lead to countless remembrances of all those special places you visit as your collector (big or little) pours over them again and again with friends and family. Let’s face it, who doesn’t want something from the gift shop to remember all those great times, right?

Stargazers will love observing the incredible views of the stars and planets through state-of-the-art telescopes. Fun Farther Afield A Daytrip to Williamsburg 2–3 hour drive This summer, pile the kids in the car and explore Williamsburg! Journey to the historical city and be transported back to Colonial times. Family fun is guaranteed with many resorts, historical sites and outdoor activities to enjoy. If you grew up in Virginia, there are probably pictures proving that you visited as a kid. You know the ones of you in your three-cornered hat, you playing that souvenir tin fife that drove everyone crazy the entire trip, and you and your sister, heads and arms stuck in the stockades smiling for the camera. Now you’re an adult, and it’s your turn to make the pilgrimage again. Children at every age will love the hands-on history experiences at Colonial Williamsburg. It’s free to wander the streets, walk back in time, step inside the chapel, smile at soldiers riding horses, and take photos making goofy faces in the stocks. Make reservations at a tavern for lunch and get a taste of colonial life from your costumed wait staff. For a more in-depth visit, start at the Visitors Center which, thanks

to a footbridge, is only a short walk from the historic district. Tickets can be purchased here for tours inside the historical buildings and outdoor gardens, and for special events happening that day. The piece de resistance is the Governor’s Palace, with marble floors, hand-tooled leather wall coverings and rich history. Afterwards, stroll down Duke of Gloucester Street (a mile in length so wear comfortable shoes) and pop into a few of the colonial shops to learn about trades and skills — maybe even try your hand at writing with a quill. American Girl Felicity doll fans will find lots of souvenir fashions. Throughout the day, actors recreate various moments in colonial history, including a town square reading of the Declaration of Independence. For accommodations that will earn a thumbs-up from the entire family, book a room at Great Wolf Lodge. Designed in the spirit of the great camps of the Adirondack, it features authentic log furniture, a massive stone fireplace and classic antler-style chandeliers. The Great Room hosts fireside bedtime stories each night for the littlest “cubs,” and the animated woodland characters of the Rhythm of the

Nature Clock Tower put on a show three times a day. The indoor waterpark includes waterslides, pools and an interactive treehouse waterfort. There’s also a glow-inthe-dark arcade, bowling alley, full-service spa, and for fans of magic and mystery ages 5 & up, MagiQuest adventures use magic wands to “unlock” treasures throughout the lodge. For some more water fun, add Water Country USA, Virginia’s largest water park, to your itinerary. Vanishing Point offers two equally thrilling ways to vanish from sight: horizontally and vertically! The Hubba-Hubba Highway, a free-floating river ride, travels 3½ acres of the park. Even the little ones can enjoy themselves at Cow-a-Bunga, where they can feel the force of waterfalls and chase bubbles above a heated pool as a comical cow on skis looks on. To dry off, visit the European villages at Busch Gardens Williamsburg, where you’ll find food, shows and rides that reflect the cultural heritage of each. Little ones will love exploring the Sesame Street Forest of Fun while older kids will be thrilled by the park’s newest addition, the multi-launch Verbolten roller coaster. For frequent visitors,

consider getting a Fun Card for unlimited admission throughout the summer. Virginia residents ages 3–5 can also get a Sesame Street Forest of Fun Preschool Pass for free admission to the park through October. For something completely different, check out Go Ape Freedom Park zip-lining adventures. There are 42 crossings, two trapeze swings and five ziplines to play on for adults and kids 4’7 and taller. Kids ages 4–10 have their own Treetop Junior course with lots of fun obstacles and two ziplines to navigate. There are biking and hiking trails through historic grounds in the park as well.

Natural Bridge & Native American Village

CAPTURE THE MOMENT! Candid Photos 101

Moms often say they wish their kids would stay young forever. So often, as our children age, we capture fewer images as they become busier. I am here to say, “Big kids matter too!” Here are some tips to make it fun. Keep it simple! My favorite images are authentic, genuine moments without props— just real moments captured sweetly. And as a parent, you are the one who sees the real moments every day. They do go too quickly, as every grandma at the grocery store is quick to tell you, so here are a few pointers to help you store up memories beyond babyhood and into the elementary and teen years. Something to try: Take a photograph with your phone or ‘big camera’ every hour for one day (grocery store, Target, ball games, homework, school pickup, etc.). Engage their creativity! At this point, kids have a pretty strong idea of who they are. Go with the things that matter, because that is really the point. They might not always be on the baseball team or practice ballet. These are the moments to remember. My son is really into music right now and has a pretty great sense of humor, so he designs little photoshoots for us around those items. It’s great bonding, and we end up sitting there talking or listening to music. A fun exercise: Ask him to bring three things that matter to him and photograph them as he tells you about them.

Let them explore! Let your kids have a camera for a day and see what they capture. We bought our kids those super durable, drop-them-off-a-cliff point & shoot cameras to capture their perspective when we travel. It’s amazing to see all the things they see! A fun exercise: Share a camera with your family and then create an album with shared images. For this one, actually print your photos, and sit and go through them together. Proudly display your new album where everyone can enjoy it! Consider the light! Good lighting is the key to great photographs. Window light is your friend! I love the light from a patio door or a window. It makes great soft light with enough shadows to create a little depth. When in doubt, face the subject’s nose towards the light. Another favorite of mine is a front door or porch. The soft diffused light will light up your little one and create some separation in the background with your darker interior lights. Advanced tip: If you are ready to take it up a notch, any white cardboard, paper, etc. is a great way to bounce a little light. Try sitting your child with the light form, a window or door, streaming in at about 45 degrees to their face, then put a large piece of white paper or poster board on the other side (or have a sibling help). The result will be a beautiful portrait with softened shadows. Fun project: Take images in the same spot every few hours in your house and see how the light changes. This will help you find a new go-to spot for quick portraits!

Keep your camera handy! You never know when those special moments are going to happen, and we are lucky to have such great technology available with our phones. I also like to keep my “big” camera charged up with a card and a multi-purpose lens, so I can just grab it. When using an iPhone, try to get ample soft light for better quality, and it should be suitable for prints. Consider color and pattern! Avoid color casts. If you know you are going to be photographing your family doing an activity or on vacation, take the time to choose clothing that complements. Avoid bright colors that cause color casts on skin. This is a GREAT way to include your kids. Give them the list and let them pick what they wear. They will be so much happier with the results. In our house, I will say, “Jeans and whatever top you want in these colors.” Or, I will co-ordinate swim clothing if I know I am going to photograph the kids at the beach. • Beach Tones: Creams, light blues, soft greens, blush. • Deep Tones: Burgundy, navy, Kelly green. • Nautical: Yellows, blues, whites. • Pop of color: Choose a more neutral palette, and introduce an accent color. • Avoid wearing the same color: All white or all black palettes tend to blend together. • Go ahead and mix your patterns as long as they coordinate: The key is to coordinate but not match.

Look for distractions! When setting up your scene, make sure nothing is stealing the attention from your kids in the background. Catch the moments that matter most! My children are now 10 and 7 years old. When I look back, I miss some of the images that I didn’t take because they were too normal, too every day. But, they passed like those moments always do, and they blossomed into new and beautiful things. Yes, I still wish I had a few more images of my toddlers and pre-school kids drawing and coloring with their looks of concentration. So, now I really try to get everyday moments: my kids reading in bed, our homeschooling routine, riding bikes and scooters or even going for a walk. Print, print, print! I highly recommend printing images. We live in this “digital dark age” where kids often see their images on phones and computers but never on the walls. I’ve purchased a wooden box for each child that I am slowly filling with their most important life moments. Seeing images of them with their families on a daily basis gives them a sense of belonging and a positive self image. PLUS, pictures bring so much joy. Green Space Immersing yourself in our beautiful Virginia greenery is rather easy with all of the parks available in Charlottesville and the surrounding county. You can go for an autumn or spring hike and also cool off in the summer all at the same parks. Try Chris Greene Lake, near the airport, for swimming or fishing. The Ivy Creek Natural Area, an official site on the Virginia African American Heritage Trail, is a great place to go for an afternoon jaunt. To temporarily escape from civilization, hike a section of the Rivanna Trail and fish, kayak or let your dog swim on the Rivanna River. For a gorgeous walk, without having to leave town, take the Saunders-Monticello Trail. Hikers enjoy lovely views as this wide trail winds its way along Carter Mountain Orchard toward Monticello. Among neighborhood parks, we love Greenleaf Park for its picnic area, toddler-friendly playground and a summer sprayground full of sprinklers, which is just off the Bypass. When it comes to watery, warm-weather fun, check out the Onesty Family Aquatic Center on Meade Avenue or the larger sprayground at Forest Hills Park. In cooler months, enjoy the Smith Aquatic Center — which offers year-round indoor swimming with a pair of two-story water slides, a play structure and a lazy river—or head over to the YMCA, with two locations offering year-round pools—one in Claudius Crozet Park and one in McIntire Park.

Artsy Outings Despite its formal sounding name, the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection is fun for all ages. The museum offers great programs for children that tie into current exhibits, though the decorations, including record-sized trees and artwork of local talent, are enough to entertain by themselves! Next, stop by UVA’s Fralin Museum of Art, which packs a punch for history and art lovers. Where else in Charlottesville can you see a Greek vase, a painting from the Middle Ages and one from the middle of the 20th century? Families will appreciate the children’s guide.

The city provides weekly trash take-away; residents purchase stickers for 32-gallon, 50-gallon, 64-gallon or 96-gallon trash bags at grocery stores or an annual sticker available at City Hall, (434) 970-3830. Ordering the Homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Command Center

I once read that a messy desk indicates a chaotic life. I read it in college, when staying organized meant keeping up with social appointments (and a few school assignments). Now that I’m a mother of three, wife to a man with a demanding job, writer and (ahem) home-manager extraordinaire, staying organized requires constant diligence. All the things that need my attention—bills, artwork, library books and invitations—eventually land on the desk in our kitchen. Even my husband plops his work down on the desk at the end of the day, hoping that I will use my magic mommy powers to make it disappear. Although it’s slightly messy, it helps me keep a chaotic life under control. Command Central As moms, we keep our fastmoving families going strong. Who else will remember to pick up toilet paper at the store, to dress our

children in the correct hue for Color Day at school, to send in a shoebox for that science project or to buy a birthday present for our mothers-inlaw. Whether it’s a desk, a counter top, a drawer or a cabinet, we all need a Command Center to keep our families running efficiently. Through trial and error, I’ve learned that we also need a system for keeping the Command Center of the home organized. The following tips— both easy and inexpensive—will streamline the system for keeping your family moving. Basic Organization Strategies Simply designate a day to do a foundational cleaning using the following strategies. 1. Tackle the Piles. Take everything out of the drawers and cabinets and everything off of the counter of your Command Center. As you do so, throw away anything you no longer need or want. Is this worth keeping? Will I need it again? 2. Sort and Categorize. When everything is out and you’ve trashed or given away what you don’t need, group similar things together. 3. Assign a Home. Each grouping needs a home. The most-used things need special consideration; they will need to be easily accessible. As much as possible, make your computer an assigned home so you can reduce piles and clutter. For example, keep your calendar, list of gifts to buy, gift ideas, schedule for babysitters and addresses on the computer. 4. Contain Yourself. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to organize your Command Center. Slide plastic carryout containers into a drawer for pens, sticky notes and paper clips. A small basket can hold your kids’ handheld devices, as well as stickers and markers. While, a plastic file folder works great for paper records, stationery and bills. 80

Establish Organizational Ground Rules Next, develop a flow for how things will arrive at and leave the Command Center. In other words, how will you stay organized? The key is not only to develop a system but also to explain to each family member how they play a part in it. 1. Never Leave Things in the Car. Make it a habit to bring in everything— sports equipment, backpacks, purses, trash—from the car each time you get home. This reduces the chaotic morning rush to get everyone out the door for school because no one is searching for a lunchbox or library book. 2. Deal with It Immediately. Whatever it is that comes through the door, whether in a child’s backpack or in the mail, do something with it immediately, or at least once a day. Open the mail, throw away what you don’t need, and separate bills and put them in their place. One or two piles aren’t the enemy of organization, but giving your attention to the piles on a daily basis will prevent them from

procreating. I have one general “to-do” pile that I go through each afternoon. 3. Establish a Weekly Time of Communication. Spousal communication concerning schedules, needs and activities is essential to successful Command Center organization. Determine a time each week that you’ll sit down and discuss the calendar. Common Areas of Chaos After you’ve cleaned out, developed a system and explained it to the family, you may find certain areas clogging the flow, in and out, of the Command Center. The following tips will help you with your problem areas. The Family Calendar. For my bustling family, this has been a problem area. We solved it by using Google Calendar, a scheduling system anyone with a Google account can access. A similar familyscheduling program, Cozi.com, uses color-coding and also maintains grocery and task lists. Birthdays. Note important birthdays on your calendar using bright red. As you look at your monthly schedule, you are reminded. Then, establish a gift closet near the Command Center that you add to when prices are right or when you find the perfect gift. Your gift closet can also include a few hostess items, stocked card box, gift bags, wrapping paper, ribbon and tissue paper. Schoolwork/Artwork. Schoolwork should leave backpacks for an established homework period and be immediately returned upon completion. Backpacks should then go back to their resting spot. Ongoing homework projects remain in a “todo” pile until they are finished. Designate a place where children can display artwork. We use the

refrigerator and the walls in the playroom. As new masterpieces are made, they replace old artwork. When I take down artwork, I note on the back who made it and when, and photograph the proud artist with their work. At the end of the school year, I tuck a few of our favorites in a plastic keepsake tub in the attic. Bills. If possible, go paperless. Most services and banks provide online payment options and will do the work for you. Pay all of your bills on one day, stamp them and then note the date they’re due on the outside of the envelope. Records. Use an accordion file or file drawer for records such as vaccination records, insurance information and paystubs. Birth certificates, social security cards, titles, licenses and other vital records should be in a locked fireproof safe, tucked away in the house. An organized Command Center is good, but a system that enables its maintenance is even better, because it allows for ongoing success and extinguishes low-grade mess stress. An ordered Command Center may not be perfect or pile-free, but it promises to keep the chaos of a fastmoving family to a minimum.
